Beirut

BEIRUT IN CONCERT:Beirut combines orchestral pop with world music to create intriguingly complex songs that are also infectiously catchy. Bandleader Zach Condon helms everything from vocals to flugelhorn to bring a uniquely diverse sonic palette into each sugary-sweet pop confection. In concert he surrounds himself with top-notch musicians, who infuse the band's indie rock sounds with eclectic folk instrumentation. By incorporating so many different influences, Beirut makes their concerts feel like a globe-trotting adventure for ticket buyers, who can’t help but sing along to familiar favorites like “Elephant Gun” and “East Harlem”.

The band was amazing! I love small venues, like the Buckhead Theatre. The sound wasn't as clear as I would have liked, but I was able to get a good view of Beruit in all their brass glory!

The show itself was mediocre. The quality of the music was very good, the only thing missing was the lack of connection with performer and audience. Zach Condon has managed to write music worthy of air-play on local radio with an indie pop format but he did not manage to take in the crowd in front of him last night. The audience was full of energy and enthusiasm for the band, Zach Condon seemed to be the complete opposite. In between songs Condon kept his head down and barely addressed the crowd. This was one of the first shows in the states, he is in NY and he is performing new material, what should have been an electrifying night came off as flat, dull and tired.

Zach Condon does not say a lot, but he seemed to be having a great time on stage, switching between guitarlele and trumpet and voice with ease. It was great to hear the band live for the first time. The sound traveled well in the perfect late-summer air at Rumsey Playfield. It really could not have been more perfect.

This was gift to my boyfriend for his 27th birthday. We found a spot on the top floor in the corner and had a great birds eye view of the stage and personal space. We thought the crowd was a little young, but everyone seemed really into it.

You have not heard Beirut until you have heard them live. The horns are bright and clear, the drums sound deeper, richer, and the energy is spectacular. Terminal 5 was the perfect venue - loved the flashing strings of lights above them adding to the festival atmosphere. Almost felt like being in a town square with an amazing band. A little crowded since it was sold out, but it's Beirut, so what do you expect? And two perfect encores. Laetitia Saedier was lovely, and I already loved Stereolab so I was looking forward to her set, but she did have the problem of her songs often sounding very similar to each other, and hard to distinguish. And the only Stereolab song she played was an early one I didn't know, but that's hardly a complaint. She was a pleasant opener, but I wish she'd been a little more energetic in her performance to better warm up the venue for the amazingness to come.

When I first heard Beirut I thought it was David Byrne singing (yes, I'm that old) -- I loved the funky instrumentation, and the way he makes trumpets and trombones so cool. And contrary to what many say about Terminal 5, the acoustics were excellent. Hope they come back to NYC soon.

As expected, the musician inspired. Playing a range of song titles from a cross section of albums, it was a show I didn't want to end. Playing loud and vibrant, I still can't get the sounds of carousels out of my head!

It was nice to finally get a chance to see Beirut, a very different and amazing band. Sound was very good, we were very close and could see very well. They ran through a great representation of their songs and did some new ones. Only cons were that it was very warm inside, and I wish they had played longer. the crowd was very into the concert, which was nice.

Beirut was outstanding! They have such a connection to their music and their audience, you can't help but feel so connected with who they are and what they do. I saw them at the State's Theatre in Portland, ME, and they blew me away. Not to mention that they sound the same, if not better live than they do recorded. They don't just play music, but every song is a revelation and a vision within itself.

I was extremely excited to go and see Beirut. I've been a fan of Beirut since I first heard them about four years ago. I usually have really high expectations for everything that I like, then I'm usually disappointed. However, this was completely different. It's really hard to explain how awesome Beirut is. The sound is absolutely fantastic. I've listened to music my whole life, tons of different types, and nothing compares to this. If you have any chance at all to go and see Beirut, you should definitely go. My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time. A+.

Amazing show! The opener was fantastic. Show was packed and sold out and definitely an audience that knew pretty much all of their songs. The drummer was the key that made this a great live show, the drums were much more powerful and brought a whole new energy to the show that you cant get by listening to the CD. Recommended for anyone who likes this band!!!

I was so excited about finally getting to see Beirut. It was the first night of their tour and they were absolutely amazing. They played everyone's favourites, along with some new music. I've seen Beirut a half dozen times and they always put on a fantastic show. The sound was great and they played a lot of favorites. MHoW is also a really good venue where it's easy to see just about anywhere. But when did Beirut start appealing to drunken frat boys? So frustrating to have people shove past you only to stand in front of you and talk/grope each other/shout out "we love you" every 5 minutes . . . Even Zach gave them a "shhh" at one point.

I have never seen a show quite like this one. The energy was just amazing, and of course, the music was spectacular. Beirut is such a talented group of musicians, and that is very apparent when they are on stage. Zach Condon always found a way to get involved in the music, whether or not he was singing or playing the trumpet (i.e. dancing). It was most definitely the best show that I have ever been to. I would recommend going to see Beirut if you ever get a chance.

I always have a soft spot in my heart for any band that includes a French horn. These guys are so talented, I'm still a little bit in shock from how great the show was. Zach was sick with a cold -- you could tell he was miserable -- but they stayed to play another song during the encore because the crowd was so happy to be there. I left happy and "Postcards from Italy" is still stuck in my head (that's a good thing). There's not much that could ruin a Beirut concert for me, though the kid with a fake I.D. certainly did his best to try. Luckily for me, he was distracted by the drunk chick standing behind him and moved away to focus on making out with her. Aside from that, great show.

Oh. My. Goodness. Beirut had not been in Boston in 6 years, and they definitely did not let anyone down. Everything from the energy to the lighting was perfection. They had lights strung up like Little Italy synced to the music; a very nice touch that really went well with their music. Every song was enhanced and played differently from the album. It was b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. My heart swelled with every song. Hearing the brass instruments live - there are no words to describe how incredible it is. Like running into your best childhood friend who grew up and became gorgeous and famous but still remember you and are still fond of you. I had a standing seat on the third floor but it was still fantastic nevertheless and I would go again in a heartbeat.

I've been a fan of Beirut for a number of years and it just so happened that our trip to NYC coincided with this concert. I purchased tickets and thought it would be a neat experience, although I will admit that I was prepared to be slightly disappointed and underwhelmed by a live performance from Beirut. I could not have been more wrong. The venue was terrific and Beirut was absolutely amazing! We are avid concert-goers and have seen a very wide variety of performances over the years, from classical to pop to country to everything in between, from small intimate venues to the largest concert venues you can imagine. This concert was one of the best, if not the very best, concert that I have ever attended. The talent in this group is undeniable and the performance from the first note to the last was an experience I will never forget!

What does Beirut sound like? I think, what if Rufus Wainwright wrote lyrics to every Sicilian funeral dirge, sea shanty, and Sergio Leone movie soundtrack but then tried to sing them like Morrissey. What's a Sicilian funeral dirge? Think of the opening scene of The Godfather II (google the scene in case you need a reminder). So, basically, they're like the saddest, liveliest, gypsy, mariachi band ever. All that said, I can't ever remember being so enthralled by a band without a guitar player. This was a homecoming show for Zach Condon and company and they did not disappoint. The whole evening was just a magic spell of swaying, scintillating horns and wonderful vocals mixing with accordion and keyboards and offbeat time signatures and rhythms. This band is not to be missed.

First off, Beirut is one of my favorite bands ever. Like. Ever. I know every song. I'd never been to one of their concerts before until this one, so I didn't know what to expect from them live. They. An excellent concert-- they played their butts off. Subtle rearrangements of favorites like Postcards from Italy gave me chills. Since earlier albums were solo created and self produced, hearing those tracks with a live ensemble brings something really special and immediate to the music. Worth it, worth it, worth it! Not to mention: State Theater in Portland, ME, is a fabulous venue.

I was a little unsure of what to expect at this show. The opening act was like watching a coffee mug filled with diarrhea boil over in the microwave. Beirut killed it though. Very energetic, melodic and just plain fun. The songs are very artfully arranged so each member seems absolutely crucial and there is almost no fluff. If you are looking for an offbeat, high energy show filled with eclectic musical styles, check out Beirut.

Forty minutes late taking the stage because of a microphone problem. The sound tech went off and on the stage more than a dozen times trying to fix it wasting everyone's time with an issue that should have been addressed long before the start time. Maybe this tainted my attitude toward the concert, but here goes.... Beirut isn't a band with a horn section, it's horns throughout. (Think mariachi band.) I found the music repetitious sounding with short 3 - 3 1/2 minute songs. Lead singer's voice gets tiresome as well. Fortunately, only a one-hour concert. Their encore was very good. Excellent musicianship but wasted on poor songwriting.

This was one of the best concerts I've been to in years. The band sounded great. The show was sold-out. And the venue was great. There's not a lot of theatrics with Beirut. They stand there and play their music and play it very well. I'm always intrigued by bands with horns, accordions, and other unique instruments ... like The Decembrists, Arcade Fire, Typhoon, etc. ... and Beirut has a really unique sound. They played a broad spectrum of songs from the last 10 years, and as I mentioned, they played them very well. One thing that stands out when seeing them live is just how great their drummer is. He really drives a lot of the show. I will definitely make every effort to see this band again the next time they play Atlanta.

Almost didnt make the show, but aftr spendin $200 was still determined to get there evn with an extra tic, and after getting in and see show, could understand why was able to get rid of it. Like the earier stuff, albums.., havnt heard th new one so was a bit (very) disapointed didnt play much older stuff n only for about an hr n a half (1.5). As was the same for Alice in Chains..., and Jane's Addicrion a couple yrs ago..!Not going to $50 shows anymore..! Wondered why i could stil easily get tix three days before the show.., now i know.. Lighting sucked, stage peformance, whole visual! If you closed your eyes n listened, sure music composure always good, its Beirut! Sound was good, but way different than i was expecting from album's sound and tones. But, also as friend had said, all songs were repetitive, not much diversity.. And i feel they have a bit more, if the play a wider range off other albums might help. More up beat and not so drab thru the whole thing. Again, like my friend said, they dont bring it! I said, its Beirut, but yes, they have more entertaining stuff in my opinion..

I'd seen Beirut recently at Bowery Ballroom when they announced a show and sold it out almost immediately. This was before the full length "No No No" came out but the single itself was out by then. They were energetic, excited, the crowd was pumped - it was all in all an amazing experience at Bowery to see them after years of loving them. I was very disappointed with the show at Radio City. I don't know if it was the venue, the sound, the lack of energy from the bank itself, or the fact that it's a seated crowd - but this just was not the same sort of experience that I was hoping for. There were definitely some feedback issues with the sound, the band did not even move around the stage at all, Zach didn't seem to really be into it. The set list had some highs and some lows... the crowd cared more about being on their phones which I guess I've come to expect that at all shows. I'm going to just assume this was a function of being in way too big of a venue, but I wouldn't recommend seeing Beirut anywhere like this.

First date on current tour and the band sounded in mid-tour form. Bearsville is an intimate space with good sound and, aside from the rare microphone clip, the production was phenomenal. Played a lot of older tunes but the new stuff was solid and well-received. This band is tight and the sound fairly stripped down; which is how i like it!! Zach's voice was strong (turn up his mic just a touch) and he's got one of the best and truly distinctive voices in music today. Horns were on point and will make you forget that music needs an electric guitar to really rock. Rhythm section was great - that drummer has a big-ass smile on his face for most of the show. The band was clearly enjoying the night as well. Loved this band for a long time, it was great to finally see them live - with my daughters

I jumped at the chance to catch Beirut at the Harvest Festival in melbourne (Werribee park) and drove the 550km there to see them thinking this would be my only chance. An Adelaide sideshow was then announced and I went to that as well, being a mere 340km away. I'm glad I went to both. I think they flew in on the Saturday of Harvest and the band appeared very jet lagged, but still produced an excellent set, being a 1 hour sampler of all things Beirut. They played on the Big Lawn stage in daylight, opening with Vagabond and got a great reception from a festival crowd. The music came through well despite some open air acoustic issues and limited time to set up their sound and they brought an energy and surprising intimacy to a large crowd. The three brass vanguard across the stage hit the high notes over and over again and on a beautiful Melbourne day, I would have listened for another few hours, but festival programming leaves no room for encores or extended sets. Up in Adelaide, two days later, the small seated venue of Her Majesty's Theatre provided a totally different experience. The sound quality was simply brilliant, virtuosity abounded and there were some magical moments. I missed the chance to dance along, but the quality of the show was so impressive and the arrangements inspired. The two refrains from nantes for example, were blended in as the song faded with Zach counterpointing "Nobody raise your voices" on the flugelhorn with the main theme being carried by the band. Just amazing. In some ways, listening to the recorded albums will somehow never live up to the highs of the live performance. Zach's voice, the precise percussion, the majesty of the trombone, trumpet and tuba, the layering of the accordion and piano, it was a privilege to listen and witness the songwriting being performed live. Where this kind of inspiration comes from I'm not sure, but it was truly beautiful art. I am so pleased Beirut chose to come back down to Australia as I missed them the first time. I'm thinking about getting back across to Melbourne to see them again in January 2013, but now that I've experienced the immediacy of their live performance, I'll feast on that memory and the powerful, well crafted and beautiful music. Thanks Beirut.

They were amazing! Just as good if not better than recordings. Zach Condon was magical. The whole experience was just incredible. Recommend!!!! I'd see them again in a heartbeat.

Beirut was stunning. Although, I wish "Postcards from Italy" had been saved for the encore (it was the fifth song); talk about an epic way to end a show! Although I must say, it still brought tears to my eyes regardless of how early they played it. The band took a while to get on stage, much to the chagrin of the crowd, but the nighttime, outdoors atmosphere of Central Park made everything feel really special. Zach sounded fantastic, as did the brass section. The diehards sung every word, and in-between we had some funny banter from a drunk guy who kept yelling things at Zach in Spanish. "Summer's over, so let's ^$%@ing celebrate," Zach said. Just be warned: If a band called Little Scream is opening for Beirut at your venue, be prepared to yawn and make sarcastic remarks throughout their entire set. They suck---for lack of a better word. And I mean, REALLY suck. The lead singer unintelligibly moans in an Enya-like fashion for a few minutes, and then their tall hipster (in the most stereotypical use of the word possible) guitarist hammers a bunch of offbeat chords in an attempt to spark Arcade Fire-like grandiosity. The lead singer, a frail woman clearly going for a Feist thing, tried to joke with the crowd about "New York squirrels" being different from squirrels in other places, and was heckled pretty badly. This same band opened for the Antlers, too, and if it weren't for fear of losing my place at the front, I would have definitely headed outside for a smoke. They were terrible both times. Why they continued to get booked on tours, I have no idea.

Zach is an amazing musician and arranger--started making amazing music when just a kid, and he's still a kid! Beautiful voice, great lyrics, adorable, he's got the whole package. I wish he talked a little more between songs, he seems a little shy, but he does speak a little bit. I've only seen the band twice, I never got to see him with a full on brass section like he was doing a few years ago. I'd really like to see that, because that's what made me a fan in the first place, I discovered him because I was already a long time fan of Serbo-Croatian gypsy brass music.

The band was boring. They played their boring songs and walked out of the stage. No entertainment and no interaction with the audience. They hardly moved from thei spots. Terrible band. Terrible show.

I really enjoyed the skillful but emotional delivery. The band pumped up the drums and the bass, which made it more fun to dance to. It started with After the Curtain, and ended with Gulag Orkestar, two of my favorite songs.

What an absolutely amazing show! The band played from the heart, and the audience reacted from the heart. It was such a moving and powerful performance throughout. I loved every minute of it, and I still can't stop thinking about it a week later.

Not only was the theater a great vision to look upon; but the music and melodies made it come alive. Beirut is just ah beautiful? no. For certain the best thing my ears will ever hear in my life time. I've seen them the first time they came to the Fox, then again on the 3rd. Both times took my breathe away. I am just happy there is a band that you can feel. It's not just words and catchy beats it's as if Beirut took life by scratch and created another sound one that you can feel in your heart. Well great great show!

Too classy, I'd say. I absolutely love this band, but I really miss the spontaneity of their performances. Last year at Outside Lands, they weren't as clean cut as now, but their energy was hard to surpass. In this show, not only was there no opening performance (bummer), Beirut was late to come onstage. The show was so clearly prewritten, and Zack Codon was being kind of flippant and arrogant. I still love the music, of course, and the talent of all the musicians. But geez, coulda been better.

It was a great show. Beautiful, energetic. I had no idea how amazing they are! The only thing I didn't like was the amount of pot smoke going on around me at the Fox.

I thought the show was great. Beirut is a great live band and their music was perfect for the outdoor arena at Rumsey Playfield. I had standing-room only tickets, so the only thing I would do differently next time is get there earlier so that I could have a better view.

Good music, good sound, nice venue. Although I was standing behind a very tall man, and couldn't see Zack Condon for a big part of the show... But what can you do. It was not so bad.

The band was wonderful. But Zac Condon's voice is sounding the worse for wear. This is the second time i've seen them (out of three) where he had trouble reaching high notes or sustaining them. He's got a heavenly voice and the band is wonderful, but anyone who wasn't familiar with their albums would wonder what all the fuss is about. Zac please take care of that wonderful instrument so you can keep singing for a long time to come

After not playing in Boston for over 6 years, Beirut delivered a great set that fostered a love fest between the band and the audience. For a band that gets no traditional media exposure to sell out a club the size of House of Blues affirms the power of the internet, and maybe some to college radio. Having two extra trombone players for most of the set just added to the overall bliss. I have been going to this club for 30 years in its many incarnations (Metro, Citi, Avalon always with the stage in pretty much the same place) and have seen the whole floor dance to a band (LCD Soundsystem) and have seen the whole audience sing along to a band (The Decemberists) but I have never seen a crowd respond so lustily as this one did whenever the brass took over a song. It was wonderful. Can't wait until they come back and I hope it isn't six years from now.

Great show! Zach seemed a little tired and the crowd was WEAK, expecting more energy since its NYC but.......more energy in Arizona from my experience....The sound is a little different from what im used to since its an outdoor venue but still a great show!
