A great performance by international star Johnny Clegg of Juluka and Savuka fame and his long-time band on his final world tour. Many South Africans in the audience and his fans singing the words to his songs. Truly an unforgettable evening.

The concert at the Carolina Theater was amazing! The venue is beautiful, the sound was perfect, and Johnny and the band played wonderful music. With over three decades of music to choose from it must be hard to narrow down the choices to one set list, but once again he chose a fabulous mix of old and new. He shared information about the history of the songs, why he wrote them, what inspired him - it was fascinating. Johnny Clegg is an amazing and under appreciated talent. I feel so lucky to have been able to experience this concert.

Just like fine wine, the man gets better with time. It had been almost 20 years since the last time I saw him perform. He hasn't lost a note! And he still moves like a twenty year old!! And what a mind he has. An amazing performer. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of his concerts, do yourself a huge favor and go!

The Johnny Clegg show at the Howard Theatre was energetic, inspiring and good value for money. I like the venue and throughly enjoyed the performance. Although the seats downstairs appear closer, one has to turn your neck sideways as the tables do not face the stage. I would recommend balcony seats for ergonomic reasons. Please bring Johnny and his band back soon and often!!!!! I wish there was more Zulu dancing

The Johnny Clegg show at the Howard Theater was all I hoped for. This was my first time at the Howard Theater, so I was pleasantly surprised by the dinner seating that went all the way up to the edge of the stage. I was in the second row of tables to the left facing the stage. As a solo diner, I was joined later by several people I didn't know and we had a nice time getting to know each other. Johnny was as wonderful as I remembered after 30 years, telling stories of his life in Africa and traveling around the world, his former career as an anthropology professor, and generally making a strong connection with the audience. He played a number of tunes from his 2011 CD "Human" and old favorites as well. He stayed to sign CDs after the show. In my brief conversation with him, I mentioned seeing him in the 1980s at a hole-in-the-wall in Austin TX called Liberty Lunch. A concrete slab, cinder block walls and a tin roof, with a bar and two very nasty bathrooms. When I mentioned the location, he started to describe it - he truly remembered playing there after all these years and all the places he has performed. I was amazed.

My fifth time seeing Johnny, his energy never seems to diminish. Now in the second leg of his "Human Tour", the dates hereafter were added. On the west coast he is performing with Ladysmith Black Mambanza which I regret I will miss. I saw this tour in three venues and he has kept the shows fresh by changing out his setlist. You won't just be entertained, you will be educated in a variety of cultures and international politics presented through short explanations and the first person narrative in his lyrics. If you like world music, you will love Johnny Clegg. And if you're already fan, you'll be pleased to know you will here selections from his new album as well as fan favorites such as Dela', Scatterlings of Africa, Cruel Crazy Beautiful World, Great Heart and I Call Your Name. Go, go go!

I have listened to Johnny Clegg since the early 80's when I first heard him on KROQ when he had his bands savuka and juluka. This was the first time I have gotten to see him live and it was a great and very entertaining evening. He had wonderful crowd interaction talking about some of the songs, South Africa and some of his perspectives and what he finds important in life. As I am not as familiar with his band mates, didn't realize until the show started that his drummer and lead guitarist were eating dinner at the table next to us at the Hollywood House of Blues restaurant (guess we should has guessed since they had South African accents). He has lots of songs on youtube, and are worth a listen.

I remember Johnny with Jaluka and Savuka from when I lived in South Africa during the 80's. He has maintained his edge. Great vocals and band. I was especially impressed with the saxophonist. The audience really got into it and were dancing in the aisles. Great performance and interesting anecdotes from his past.

Do you know any artist that has released 19 albums, all of which have been at least gold records, was a lecturer in anthropology, is a Knight and has received an honorary law degree, and has had Nelson Mandela dance with him on stage to celebrate his birthday? Johnny Clegg is this and more. There is no one I know of that hears his music and doesn't immediately fall in love with his Celtic-Zulu fusion. Yes, I said Celtic-Zulu fusion. It sounds odd, but it is amazing stuff. It is a little bit pop, a little bit rock, a little reggae, a little latin. A lot of Zulu. As a performer, he's at the top of his art. This is a show not to be missed.

After being away for the past few years Johnny and his band returned to the Keswick which is a very nice and accessible venue for him. Thirty years of music making and storytelling were packed into two plus hours of spirit, energy and fun. Johnny and his band were amazing. Blending new and old material, Johnny took the audience on an odyssey that encompassed rocking ballads, afro-pop ,reggae, latin rhythms, tribal chants and dancing. There is hearing Johnny on cd (always a treat) and then there is exepriencing him in concert. This is one show that if you are fortunate enough to see you wil not be disappointed. The only down side was the small audience size which is why I want to get out the word to go see Johnny!

I have had Johnny King on my concert bucket list for sometime. I think I originally heard him on Margaritaville radio. I saw that he is on tour and bought tickets for my husband and i to see him in NY at BB Kings. Johnny Clegg has been making beautiful music for over 30 years. His music is very popular in South Africa where he is from. He combines African and Celtic sounds to deliver amazing music. There were people ranging in age from their 20s up to their 50s and they were all on their feet dancing by the end of the show. We are big fans now!!!

I first heard Johnny Clegg 25 years ago while serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Botswana. After hearing a story about him on a Voice of America radio broadcast, i bought tapes that I played again and again. I was very happy to finally hear him in person. He's a fine musician who has done a lot to break down racial barriers in South Africa.

Always liked Juluka and Savuka but never had the chance to see them in concert. Thought we'd check out Johnny Clegg when we saw he was coming to town. Show was outstanding and very high energy, with material from both those bands and newer solo material. His son and another talented multi-instrumental musician opened for him and they were also enjoyable though very different. Greatly enjoyed the show and Johnny's enthusiasm, despite only about 2/3 of the seats being full at the Parker House in Fort Lauderdale (our first time there but not our last - great venue). The crowd was very enthusiastic and clearly knew lots of his songs - I knew there were lots of South African yacht crew in SoFLo, but not that many! Highly recommend seeing him if you can. I know we will if he comes back to town again.

On his first tour in the US in decades Johhny Clegg wowed the audience!!! What an amazing night, what a tremendous concert! Upbeat, joyful, powerful, and brilliant, with important, meaningful messages, his exceptional musicians grabbed hold of us and never set us down. I came right home and e-mailed everyone I know in other cities to tell them NOT TO MISS THIS EVENT. I am a very big fan, but had never seen Johhny Clegg before in concert. I went with two friends who had seen him a couple of times before in South Africa, and two people who did not even know his music at all (they had just heard "Dela" once, because I sent it to them!) We all came away with the same impression! We were all so happy to have seen this terrific musical event. If you are considering going, please, please, please go! This is one band that is actually sooooo much better in person than their recordings! Go!

This was the third time we've seen Johnny Clegg in concert - the first being 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although he doesn't dance as much (or as energetically - no wonder!) as he did 30 years ago, he still has the moves. The music was great, with plenty of his best songs - Great Heart, Dela, Asimbonanga, Going to Kilani, Take My Heart Away, etc. Halfway through the show almost the entire audience was on its feet, singing along - you cannot help but be caught up in his music. His band is excellent, works well with him. Johnny may be getting along in years, but he continues to rock. Great concert! Bonus was 30 minutes of Jesse Clegg (his son) playing his own music.

This could have been one of the best concerts of my life - the room was packed with mostly ex South Africans who wanted to enjoy all Clegg's old hits and reconnect to South Africa - all Clegg had to do was come on and play hit after hit (and he has plenty) and the place would have rocked ! Instead we had an unnecessary support band, , and the first half of the show were songs we either didn't know, or weren't the big hits - there was also very little interaction with Clegg and it seemed he was just going thru the motions. Eventually, towards the end, Clegg played his big hits and the room went wild.........but i left with a feeling of frustration that i had been denied a great concert - what a pity, as i would have come back year after year to hear his great songs, but that won't happen now.

I am a huge fan of Johnny Clegg and I've seen him in concert before but this show was outstanding!!! He played a wonderful mix of the new and the older favorites. It was as if the show was put on just for me :) The crowd was very enthusiastic and he just kept going. The opening band of two young people referred to Johnny Clegg as "old man" which was infuriating until I found out it WAS his old man (father!). Great opening band and the best Johnny Clegg.

Johnny Clegg's music is rhythmic, hypnotic, and socially relevant. He is part sociologist, teacher, anthropologist, story teller. He is also a song writer and singer. He tells the stories of Africa - the good and the bad. He does it with an infectious style that by the last third of the concert, had the audience on its feet and dancing. This was my first time to this venue and while it was nice, it seemed to be dated. The crowd seemed to follow in the steps of the venue. But it was obvious from the beginning that the crowd knew who Johnny Clegg was and appreciated his music. The last half-hour was spent on our feet, dancing and swaying to the music steeped in the rhythms of Africa. Had a great time. As a side note, the ushering staff, both paid and volunteer, was wonderful. All smiles and so very helpful. The opening act was Clegg's son, who was touring with his dad for the first time. A great way to open the show.

Johnny Clegg, the British-born South African master singer, songwriter, musician, evangelist for peace between all peoples put on his typical rocking show on Sunday. His band was impeccable, his performance very heartfelt and human, with anecdotes from his amazing life as an artist bridging racial and cultural divides in South Africa during a very turbulent time, and then carrying that message to everyone who will listen around the world. An indefatigable fighter for human rights and for empathy and common sense, he brings his whole being to bear at every show supported by a terrific band - almost everyone of which has been with him for years. DO NOT MISS HIM if you ever get the chance to catch an appearance. A good friend of Nelson Mandela's, he clearly has lived his life giving artistic and powerful testimony to the same vein of sanity and encompassing humanity that Mandela represented.

We have been dancing around the house like him since we went to the show. I was in South Africa just before the fall of apartheid and I was appalled at some of the things I saw. Johnny Clegg and his band performed one night in Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse in Little five Points to a packed house. The opening act was his son Jesse Clegg who can take some lessons from his father in song writing, yet a very polished performer. The hour and a half with Johnny Clegg was amazing. At 61 years old Johnny still does the authentic Zulu dance and sings in perfect Zulu language and English of coarse doing some new numbers and all his old hits accumulated in an illustrious 30 year career. It was a blast of South African culture in steroids.Worth every penny we paid for the tickets.

Fantastic show in a unique venue--The Howard Theater in NW Washington DC. The dinner-seating arrangement tended to subdue the mostly over-40 (maybe even over-50)crowd. By the time they played "I Call Your Name" the really energetic folks were in the aisles dancing. Johnny is a great story teller and explained the origins for many of the songs. He played a healthy smattering of songs from his latest album--Human--which I had just purchased on iTunes for $10. I think the album is worth the investment. I hope Johnny Clegg comes back to North America for another tour as I will certainly pay to see him again.

Johnny Clegg's performance identities are many. Johnny Clegg & Jaluka Johnny Clegg and Savuka and now just his name headlining. I have seen him every time he has come to Portland in the last 20 years including last year in Portland and Eugene. His talent just seems to increase with his years. This is a concert you can rock and dance at and you don't need to know anything about Clegg except that he is from South Africa and that he was politically active through the apartheid years. Because he had a band full of Zulu African Musicians, he was banned often in his own country so he would play with only word of mouth publicity on College Campuses to inspire equality. He can tell a poignant story as good as Dylan can in song, and has the aesthetic feel for his audience of Sting or Mark Knopfler. But the music, oh the music! Dela is a transformational experience, ("I've been waiting for you all my life, waiting for Redemption") everytime you hear it. Johnny's Cultural Zula Dances (quite a challenge at his age) is still an inspiration, proving he can still bust a move most of us could only hope for. If you want to hear rock and pop mixed with the best elements from African and American music, This is the concert of a lifetime. He will be in Portland this August Outdoors and you will discover the answer to why 'the dog howls at the moon'!!!!!

That it's his final chapter was made clear by Johnny himself. The music was as great as ever! His stories all super, especially the explainaion of the dance moves. But you could see the slowing. That it was all harder than in the past. There was a melancholy toward the end, but he kept us uplifted to the finish.

There are number of musicians out there who speak there piece about conditions in this world & about inequalities & injustices, Johnny Clegg is among the top tier of this group & has been for close to 40 years! It was inspiring to see him on stage again & playing with his son Jesse, in this cool small venue to get up close & experience Johnny playing a wide variety of his portfolio, stopping from time to time interface with the audience & share his life stories which he does so well. He is a talented musician & a man with something important to say & it will be sad if this is his final curtain call with us, if it is, we are blessed with having the opportunity & we wish him many fine days on this little planet of ours, but we hope that his cancer stays in remission & he lives out his full life as he truly deserves to do, because his message is one that we need to hear time & time again, hopefully touching another generation through not only his music but Jesse's as well. Go see & enjoy Johnny if you can... Farewell Johnny Clegg!

A fantastic concert. Johnny sang and danced for over 2 hours. Simply a very talented performer and speaker. His son opened the show. I hope that he lives on for many years.

I learned about Johnny Clegg years ago when I was in France, I think. I didn't know that Americans knew about him so was surprised to see that the Balboa Theater was almost sold out. I asked a couple next to me how they knew about him and they said because he played during the World Soccer Cup in South Africa. Anyway, Johnny's music is excellent, he has a great voice, so much energy and was so open with the audience about his story and his illness. I was waiting for him to play Scatterlings of Africa and Asimbonanga which he finally did at the very end. Memorable evening! His son Jesse was the opening act and he is talented, too, but doesn't have the charisma of his father.

Johnny Clegg is an absolutely amazing performer, musician, and storyteller. He takes time to explain each song and movement and he makes sure the audience experiences the music in the best way. It was a privilege to see one of my favorite performers on stage. Everyone was dancing to his music, singing and happily enjoying life. His passion and humility were evident that night. Also,he had a special gift for us. His son Jesse was able to perform his own music. I was able to hear songs that I had sang and loved for years. The visual effects were amazing and the theater itself was beautiful. I loved the videos playing in the background to each song. I was able to walk to the venue from my hotel which was great! It was in Downtown San Diego which is easily accessible and close to everything from food to the zoo. Johnny is so full of life and truly loves his fans. He even acknowledge those of us who drove down from LA to see him and the places in California he had played in the past. My boyfriend and I had an amazing time. I hope that one day Johnny will be well enough to perform near me again. Thank you to those who coordinated this event. I am so happy to have been able to see one of my favorite artists.

What a bitter sweet evening in the presence of Johnny Clegg and his band. This is Johnny's final tour; the evening became a teaching moment as he led us through his personal and musical develooment influenced so heavily by his Zulu associations. Highlights included an explanation of mitochondrial DNA and "Mother Africa" from his days as professor of anthropology, a video of the surprise onstage visit by Nelson Mandela, and a duo with his son of a song written by the son for his father. All in all, it was a beautiful evening filled with emotion and amazing music!

There's no point in a review. Johnny Clegg is in remission of a very serious form of cancer, and took this opportunity for a last world tour. If you missed it, you will never have the chance to see him again. And what a lost opportunity! How often do you see a double knight (Britain and France) sing his songs from a 40-year musical career that made him a living legend in his native land of South Africa, as well as Europe? He has a smaller following in the US, but his music deserves many more fans. A former zulu dance champion (the French call him the White Zulu), at 64 years old he can still do phenomenal kicks and explain the interpretation. Heartbreaking and triumphant. Intellectual, modest and concerned. That's the best humanity can be, and that's Johnny Clegg.

Johnny Clegg was wonderful. The format, both speaking and singing, that reviewed his 40 years of performing was both entertaining and educational. His tributes to his friend, his mother and to Africa were marvelous

This concert was simply amazing! If you are a Johnny Clegg fan, try to go to one of his shows on the "Final World Tour." This show was my 5th Johnny Clegg concert (going back to 1990!), and it may have been the best one yet. The BB King venue is very intimate, so that helped set the vibe as well. His son, Jesse, opened for him, and also sang with him later. There was also a big surprise when the lead singer from Walk the Moon came on-stage and sang Asimbonaga with him. He recently discovered Johnny Clegg's music, and they are going to write together later on the tour. I'm also going to the Chicago show as well. Can't get enough! Johnny has a Great Heart and makes me Dela in this Cruel Crazy Beautiful World!! :-)

What an amazing two nights in NYC! The intimate setting of BB Kings was the perfect venue for Johnny's Clegg "The Final Journey" tour. This is the last time American audiences will be able to see this legendary performer. The stories, videos, dancing and songs...not to be missed!

After travelling to South Africa several years ago, and already being a longtime fan, I saw Johnny & band perform in Chicago at the City Winery. Wonderful high-energy show with his full band. I enjoyed his commentaries along the way: his insightfulness is what more Americans should have in these times. Two years later, I also saw Johnny with his son, Jesse in Minneapolis. The Cedar Cultural Center is a smaller & more intimate; I could tell it was more Johnny style. Sitting center, four rows back, it was amazing to see that Johnny can still Kick It like in the old videos of his dancing with African tribal peoples. Jesse was also excellent and it was heartwarming to imagine father and son touring together with their gifts of song.

The Johnny Clegg Band brought their uniquely joyful music to Durham, NC, on March 22, 2016, for an unforgettable concert. They dazzled the extremely appreciative audience with songs familiar to longtime fans, with Johnny often talking briefly between songs. I have been a fan since the 1990s, so it was thrilling to finally see him live -- and from the fourth row! Nearly three weeks later, I am still experiencing Concert Glow and feeling more engaged with life. This concert reenergized my spirit and has gotten me thinking about how to make more of a difference with my life. Needless to say, the performance was great fun, and my husband also had a wonderful time. Jesse Clegg's performance was also terrific. Johnny and Jesse Clegg, thank you for coming to Durham, NC, and please return when you can!

I struggled to find the words to express how much the concert meant to me until I saw this comment by Johnny Clegg in the April 1, 2016, Kingston Whig-Standard newspaper: "You go to a concert to become reinvigorated and rehumanized. Music's function, really, is not to be dark and an internal monologue -- it's about connecting." This concert, for me, succeeded spectacularly. Jesse Clegg's performance was also terrific. Johnny and Jesse Clegg, thank you for coming to Durham, NC, and please return when you can!

Johnny and the band are my family's all time favorite. Intelligent stories with mezmerizing rhythms. We have been to three concerts and the band never disappoints. My only critisism is that for this particular concert Johnny was so focused on impressing his special guests from the U.N. that he played to that side of the room all night and rarely glanced or gave any energy to the fans sitting stage right. I can understand why he wanted to impress them and I think if he realized that this was what he was doing he would have "spread the love". So, no hard feelings; just thought he should know.
