Afghan Whigs

AFGHAN WHIGS IN CONCERT:Blending experimental alternative rock with soul and R&B, the Afghan Whigs forged one of indie rock's most unique sounds during their heyday in the '90s. Reunited after a long hiatus and on tour in 2014, the band brings their layered instrumentation and frontman Greg Dulli's powerful voice to bear on a range of material at their live shows, from remixes of their early tracks to covers of the Fugees and Frank Ocean. Anchoring their live sets are classics from their catalog, drawing from six critically acclaimed albums of expansive, exploratory noir rock. With their first new album in more than 15 years slated for release in 2014, the Whigs are riding a considerable wave of excitement into their upcoming tour dates.

Marvelous songs, incredible playing, beautiful lighting -- great way to bring in the new year! I heard they were doing 24-track audio and running at least 4 video cameras, so I'd say it's likely the show will be released as a DVD before long. Only downside was bringing up the singer from the obscure band Squirrel Bait to do one of their songs that wasn't very entertaining or interesting.

Seeing the Afghan Whigs on a reunion tour was something I wouldn't have expected given the success of Twilight Singers, so when I was one of the lucky ones to snag a ticket to the sold out show (in Cincinnati no less) I couldn't wait. The band was at the top of their game, and Dulli's voice sounded amazing. Unfortunately any time other instruments were involved it was an assault of sound that drowned out everything. The sound was turned up so high you couldn't make out any individual instruments. My ears were still ringing 4 days later, and while I realize it is my fault for not taking earplugs, I was toward the rear of the venue and it didn't need to be that loud. Unfortunately some venue sound personnel forget that the audience is not as deaf as they are. Shame on Bogart's for assuming "louder = better" and turning all the dials as far as they would go. Despite all that, seeing the band together again was incredible!

The group played very well and the sound was crisp and clear, I was very disappointing in the time they were on stage and with NO encore made this a very short show. Considering the available back listing of music they had produced makes this show a poor value. I think they should return some of the ticket cost back due to the time played. They started about 9:35 ending at 11:10

Dulli and gang sounded great, but played just a few minutes over an hour. Really guys? After 13 years thats all you got? Not one encore even? Years ago I followed these guys and saw them in Philly, DC, Baltimore and NYC. After this show, great as they sounded, I wouldnt see them again anywhere close by. I felt insulted.

Better and wiser than 1994. Boston had the best set list thus far. Band was tight and looked great. Greg Dulli hasn't lost a step. Still angry yet funky. The show of the year. It would be a shame if they didn't continue the journey.

Greg Dulli has still got it, or has found it again. The wall of sound is there still to be conjured up from the grunge days, but the musicianship is as impressive as the mix. Classical bass, violin and piano instruments feature in several songs, adding wonderful layers to the four guitars and the steady banging of the drums. The new songs flow seamlessly with the older ones, and the covers were revelations: Beatles, Steve Winwood, Jeff Buckley? Dulli has always had great taste, and so do we for choosing to stick with him this long! Harmar had a very different vibe, 70s and 80s and 50s rather than 90s in kind of New Wave mix (with synths and saxophone), but it was complimentary in a good way to the Whigs' sonic assault, especially when their tiny dynamo of a lead singer guested on the vocals for the sexy and sinister "Demon in Profile."

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this show, the venue, or the band. Quite the opposite. The show was amazing, their set list was long, and I had the very best time! It was hell up in Harlem! Afghan Whigs, led by Mr. Dulli, rocked the Apollo in what was one amazing show. Soul legend Lee Fields joined the band for a heart-wrenching version of JJ Cale's Magnolia, and then it was on to Whigs classics Honky's Ladder and John the Baptist, bringing down this beautiful room (great acoustics) in show-stopping fashion. If you ever get a chance to see the Afghan Whigs, take it!

Ler s put it to you this way...Afghan Whigs put on such a great show that I was lost in it, and I did not even barely take any video/pictures. The venue was good. The show was excellent. In my last aborted attempt to see the Whigs I left the 8 PM show at 10 PM since the headliners didn't show by that time. This time, I got to the 8 PM show this time at 9:15 PM and the Whigs were thankfully just getting on stage. For some reason the band was heavily back-lit. At times it was painful to watch with the flashing lights behind the band. At almost no time was the front of the band lit. I have no idea why this was done.

I have seen the Afghan Whigs perform since 1994 when they toured with their seminal album Gentlemen. Shows have taken me from the Cannibal Club and Liberty Lunch in Austin during the 1990's; then Bowery Ballroom and Irving Plaza in NYC and now the Beacon Theater which was great. I was apprehensive about seeing a rock show at a seated theater but the minute the band walked onto the stage the audience stood up and never sat down for the next 2 hours. And it's also nice that we can bring our drinks into the theater. Hope there wasn't too much of a mess. Also appreciate the signs before entering to not use cell phones during the concert. That's the worst.

Starting more than three hours after the time on the ticket is for Axel Rose and other primadonnas. The opening acts (I only stayed to see the beginning of the second opening act, so I don't know how many there were) were so bad, and started so late, that we left. Was supposed to be a Whigs concert, not a music festival.

"1965" is one of my all-time favorite CDs. I am a big Dulli and Whigs fan, but this show was in no way entertaining. Horrible sound, lousy back-lit lighting, no chemistry between the band. It looked like Dulli with a bunch of side-men. No fun, no joy, no dynamics. Van Hunt was self-indulgent, boring, and just plain painful. The Fonda Theater BLOWS. They must have checked for our wrist-bands 20 times. Bad vibes all-around.

Great show. Great venue for them. Greg Dulli's voice was in fine form. The band was very muscular and backing vocalists added powerful, soulful strength to night. The venue was perfect setting for a comeback. Hope they start recording new material and hit the road again. My date and I loved it.

Somebody better check the roof of the Fonda, because i'm pretty sure it nearly got blown off on Friday night by the Afghan Whigs (Night one of their 2-night sold-out Fonda shows). They have been away far too long, but they're back and in prime form. Greg sounded great (very strong voice) and with six or seven guys now in the live band, they really bring a filled out sound. Lots of great 'rock-noir' (that's the best i can describe it - someone asked me what they sound like, and that's what i came up with). Here's hoping they stay together and continue to tour.

I've been an Afghan Whigs fan since Gentlemen, and I hated the fact that I might never see them live. So, when they reunited and came to Atlanta, I drove 5 hours to see a fantastic show. That show was amazing. Highlights included Fountain and Fairfax, 66, Negleckted, and Crime Scene Part One. Dulli commanded the stage from beginning to end, and they were TIGHT. This was one of my top 5 all time shows. The venue left something to be desired, but the sounds and lights were good.

I last saw them on the 'Gentlemen' tour back in '93. On this reunion show of sorts (they may be recording new material), the guys were as sharp and entertaining as ever. Greg Dulli's voice has really held up remarkably well, and he's as charismatic as ever (women were still going nuts for him, and at one point he sat on the stage and "sang to the ladies"). They mostly played the "hits" off of Gentlemen, Congregation, Black Love, and several songs off of 1965, and they managed to weave portions of a few Prince songs into their own. See them before they disband once more!

After having seen the Afghan Whigs in their natural environment of Cincinnati, Ohio a couple of times in the late 90's, I was excited to hear they were getting together again. As is always the case with these reunions, the question is - will they live up to the billing of the former glory? In a word: absolutely. The Afghan Whigs have not missed a beat. Save for some grey hair and a 25 year old drummer (who was great but probably wasn't born when the band formed), if you had told me this was 1998, I would have believed you. PS, Terminal 5 wasn't nearly as bad as the reviews would suggest. Perhaps it was the difference in crowds but I thought the place was pretty decent. We got there after the doors had opened and still got a place cener stage probably 15 feet back.

The Whigs destroyed again in Philly, with Dulli sounding better than ever, hitting the pitch dead on even his most epic snarls. Curly's bass licks were thumping, and the layered guitars, cello and keys really would have added depth to the performance - if anyone could have heard the nuance though the Electric Factory's muffled, fuzzy audio. Seriously - invest in new equipment folks, there's no excuse for running a professional venue with blown speakers. As disappointed (and shocked, really) we were as the audience that there was no encore, no one can blame Dulli and the Whigs for refusing; when you struggle to be heard through your entire set, why prolong your artistic frustration any longer. Overall, a tremendous performance by the resurrected gods of dark-soul-grunge, but next time around, I suggest the Troc.

After being in hibernation for 13 years, the Afghan Whigs proved they should have stayed dormant. Front man Greg Dulli had no interaction with the fans throughout the show, which is unlike him.
