Hot Tuna

HOT TUNA IN CONCERT:Blues rockers Hot Tuna may have come into being incidentally, but it's no accident that they continue to sell out tours year after year. Formed as a side project by members of Jefferson Airplane while frontwoman Grace Slick was recovering from throat surgery, the band quickly attained an identity of its own, outlasting its forebear and going on to achieve considerable success. The band has always been a live act first and foremost -- they've released more live albums than studio albums -- and they'll continue to bring down the house on their upcoming tour as they treat fans to classics like "Hesitation Blues" and "Hit Single #1." BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:At the height of Jefferson Airplane's success in the late '60s, the band took a break from touring as lead singer Grace Slick recovered from vocal cord surgery.

I can't say enough about the show. After all the years and venues I have seen HOT TUNA at, the show is always so enjoyable. From Woodstock, to this last show of the 2017 tour, their songs all hit their marks and contained the interesting variations that keep Tuna fresh. Repeating a comment from the night "ABSOLUTELY LOVELY' to listen to! Can't wait for the book and next years tour. God Bless all Merry Christmas Jack O'

the best thing about Tuna is that everytime you see them , they put on a show worth watching. Jorma and Jack keep pushing each other to play crisp riffs and beautiful picking guitar work. tonight they added a top notch guitarist who added some space and another voice to the jamming..great show.

Hot Tuna sounded tighter than ever. The show was great from start to finish. Jorma looks slim and healthy and Jack did some aerobics for us, he jumped at least three feet in the air while getting down on the bass. It was a real treat. I hope these guys never stop touring. I used to see them more often back in NY but now that I am here in South Florida it is nice to know they will come down sometime during August. The last time I saw them at Revolution they played outside and Jack was not happy with the heat, the only heat last night was coming from the stage. Smoking!!!!

After over 40 years, Jack and Jorma can still jam like no one else....they played with their usual passion....... The venue (Revolution) was excellent However, for them to charge $28 for TWO (2), yes TWO drinks, was absolutely disgusting... Next time, BYO.... Thanks Jack and Jorma...

The Revolution served up a steaming portion of Hot Tuna last night. From the moment they came on stage to the final chords Jack, Jorma, and Barry catered the Ft. Lauderdale audience to healthy portions of Hot Tuna's musical recipes. Jack and Jorma appeared to still have a ball playing together after all of these years. Barry's Mandolin playing added an bluegrass undertone to many familar classics that brought out surprising freshness. Jack and Jorma's playing remains both fresh and familar. This band is a national treasure and should be recognized as such. If you have a chance to see this incarnation of the Band do so.

When you talk about absolute virtuosos that still love what they're doing, you're talking about Jorma and Jack. It's amazing to me that I still get excited before, during and after their shows almost 50 years later. Also, their friendship has endured many decades because neither one has a huge ego and they truly enjoy each other. To see the two of them acoustically was truly a thrill...amazing!

its hard to say how many times I've seen Hot Tuna in concert. They have definitely come a long way from there shows at the Beacon when they would play until the morning. This night was a very special night. On the night of Nov 19, 16 I had the pleasure to see one of the greatest bass players take center stage. On more then a few songs Jack took the lead which put a very special twist on some of the GREAT HOT TUNA songs. I mean after playing together for 50+ years you need to mix it up. Jorma was playing exceptionally well also.

After a blistering opening set by Rocky Mtn faves, Leftover Salmon, Jorma appeared on stage and admitted, "They asked us how we were going to follow an act like that. ... Very slowly." And they did start slowly, among the pieces Hesitation Blues which began with Jack "finding" and pocketing a dime on the stage's oriental carpet, to which Jorma remarked, "Waste not, want not." Early on the groove was established and it got deeper.

Opening up for HOT TUNA was Left Over Salmon. both bands played over 90 minutes. Jack and Jorma are Pro's and always put on a dynamite show. I have been to HT concerts before but never at the Beacon. The facilities and aura are perfect at the Beacon. This Hot Tuna show was a disappointment to me. It opened with John Hammond joining Jack and Jorma for some blues then moved on to a typical HT show. What I didn't like was Teresa Williams coming on and doing her gypsy twilling act with tambourine and screaming vocals. And Larry Campbell is a truly great musician but the last 45 minutes of this show just amounted to a lot of noise with Larry and Jorma going on too long trading unending musical lines.

The first song I ever heard was Walking Blues in the back seat of my friends Cutlass in 1975. I was hooked. I first saw Hot Tuna at the Long Island Arena in Commack NY where they played until after 2AM in the morning. 40 years later they sound just as a good with a couple of substitutions for those who have past. They even played a song from their roots as Airplane and another song from Grateful Dead! Jack no longer gets nervous playing bass solos and Jorma can still play all night long. Most bands can only play 2 or 3 hours most and sound like crap live or lip sync. Hot Fn Tuna are always the real thing. At 75 years old, Jorma still rocks the house and never misses a note or a beat. Other than what the song really means, Hot Tuna rocked us and rocked us all night long. My only regret was not getting seats in time to sit in the orchestra at the Beacon. The sound system was directed towards the orchestra and lower levels. I kept wanting to make it louder.

The venue is superb and Jorma and Jack were remarkable in a duo acoustic two set performance. Jorma's acoustic guitar talent has been evident for decades. His voice is still strong, suave and well in tune. Jack's talent was truly a highlight. Bass players talents are often lost in the musical mix, particularly when it is in an electric session. Jack's virtuoso skill in making the bass as vibrant and melodic as Jorma's acoustic jams was at time, breathtaking. The crowd was in sync with Jorma and Jack and your could feel the great vibes build throughout the entire performance.

Sat 28 of November 2015 -- I saw Hot Tuna (acoustic) play for at least the 15th time since 1973. Jorma and Jack are not only solid musicians who's technique and performance are solid and at the top of the game ...the music they make is not only beautiful to listen to it is emotionally evocative and completely rewarding. The audience was predominately older (50+) but it was great to see some young people appreciating the performance by these two legendary rock stars. I don't know what I like better: Hot Tuna acoustic or Hot Tuna electric ...what a dilemma! This was an all acoustic evening, and it was really excellent. No posturing, no silly entrapments Just Great Music played amazingly by two legends. Thanks Jack, Thanks Jorma!

If you thought the band was incredible on Friday night, then you must have been completely blown away by Saturday night's performance, like I was. The first set was comprised of our typical Tuna selections. A cake was brought out in the shape of an airplane, with psychedelic colors. Jorma promised that the second set would be awesome (something like that). The second set turned out to be a tribute to the Jefferson Airplane. Although Jorma and Jack were the only former members present, their guests were great. Jeff Pehrson sounded like Marty Balin singing Plastic Fantastic Lover and the girls were great at covering Grace's vocals. Larry

Orch seats Row J on the left , great view of the stage. Sound was good but got a little muddy at times. Overall they were fantastic ! I have been going to Hot Tuna/Jorma shows for as long as I can remember. They are always a fun experience just for the Vibe and then they get up there and tear it up and put it down. Jack was on fire and really looking to go for it. Justin on Drums is rock solid and Jorma jacks adds that special sauce to the mix. We had a lot of fun all night long. Security was pretty easy but they are checking everyone so slow going getting in. Beer is good put pricey , no issues with the facility though and the ushers were all very friendly. I'd seen Leon before, about 15 years ago, and he was much better then. I still enjoyed his performance, but... On the other hand, I'd never before seen Hot Tuna live, and I've been kicking myself that I missed such an exciting performance by a band I can only refer to as "The Real Deal". I've known for a long time that Jorma, and Jack made music I liked, but, for some reason, I never collected their albums, or listened to them on my own. That all changes after Friday's concert.

Much buzz preceded this show electric show at Beacon Theater NYC after the acoustic show the night before at NYSEC Concert Hall. A lot of anticipation for the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE tunes never before "covered" by Jorma Kaukonen & Jack Casady, both former members. Crowd actually a bit sedate during 1st set, mostly in seats instead of SRO. Highlights, iho, Hesitation Blues, Bowlegged Woman (with a particularly animated Jack, jumping all over the stage during his solo lead in!)....last tune of set 1, cover of Sugaree really shined and left fans eager for 2nd set..... Set 2 included Rock Me Baby, 99 Year Blues, Hit Single #1 and Funky #7, but pinnacle reached during JA's Somebody to Love - wherein Teresa Williams REPRESENTED big time singing Grace Slick's parts. Encore Keep Your Lamps Trimmed & Burning was another highlight! I actually got seat AA 103 on TM of all things on day before show FOR A FRIEND!, I sat 4 rows behind in row A - phenomenal seats. Set list below is for: Hot Tuna Electric Extravaganza Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady Barry Mitterhoff, Skoota Warner With Special Guests Larry Campbell And Teresa Williams The Beacon Theater New York City, New York Saturday, November 23, 2013

I saw the Jefferson Airplane at Central Park in 1972. Then of course Jorma & Jack went their own way. I used to see Tuna at the Academy of Music on 14th Street in NYC. They were amazing then and I'm happy to report they're just as good now!!! Jorma's voice was spot on and he ripped those strings like he did back in the 70's. Jack Casady blew us all away. Every bass player on the planet (including Stanley Clarke) should be required to study Jack's style and skills. The band they put together was top notch. It was way better than I had hoped for.

after buying the Burgers album and only 512 miles from home, I got to see Hot Tuna live. It was worth the trip. Their performance was excellent. Not quite as good as I've heard on some of the live recordings found on youtube, Spotify, etc, but worth a 500 mile trip and a couple of nights in hotel rooms. The issues I had with this show stem primarily from the sound. On virtually every recording I've heard, both studio and live, Jack's bass has always been one of the cleanest, most 'open' sounding I've ever heard. Unfortunately, at this show it was muddy and undefined; reduced to the point of being a rhythm instrument. I did attempt to tactfully bring up the issue with the sound crew during intermission, pointing out that the bass lacked the excellent sound they were achieving on Jorma's guitar. It did improve somewhat in the 2nd set, but was never truly focused and defined. During intermission, I heard others complaining about not being able to hear Jorma's vocals. Again, not a complaint about Jorma, but about the mix. As someone who in the past has paid the bills as a location sound engineer, perhaps I'm more critical than most. But the mix did affect my ability to enjoy the show. Next mission: catch Hot Tuna Electric (hopefully, at a venue with a better mix).

The Bijou is a perfect venue. Hot Tuna is still talented. The duo performed well acoustically but there was not a lot of feeling in their show. Jack Casady's attack on the bass drew the few positive responses from the crowd but the guitar playing and vocals were lackluster. A trio might've fared better as it seemed Jorma tried to be perform lead and rhythm with an often out-of-tune guitar. Still - the heart of Jefferson Airplane tried to revive old favorites. Maybe you should wait for Electric Hot Tuna?

This wasn't the best concert I've ever seen, but only because the last Hot Tuna concert I saw was. This venue was better, though - as intimate as 6th and I is in DC, The Birchmere is even better. There were several tables between us and the stage, but we were still within 40 feet of Jorma and Jack. This was a completely acoustic show. At 77, Jorma is as good as Les Paul, Doc Watson or Chet Atkins ever were, and Jack is just about the best bassist alive. I've seen the Dead a dozen or more times, Dylan almost as many, Seji Ozawa, Eugene Ormandy, George Solti and Franz Welser-Möst. None were better than the shows that I've seen from Hot Tuna. These two guys have been playing together for almost 60 years, and they're obviously having as much fun as they give the audience. SUPERB.

Hot Tuna never disappoints. On this occasion we celebrated Jack Cassady's 70th Birthday with friends. Seeing Marty Balin sing his songs made the night. Jack was dancing and strutting all night long and Jorma is as Jorma is, Brilliant!! Having Larry Campbell play fiddle brought back memories of the 70's when Papa John played that role and with Theresa lending her talent to "White Rabbit" I imagine everyone got a good dose of the 60's. Justin, Barry and GE tied the whole thing together in this Reelin' and Rockin' Birthday bash!! Cannot wait to help Jack celebrate his 80th!!!

Jack was jumping around the stage and providing huge starts and/or finishes to every song. Jorma was in fact the captain this evening. Keeping the jams flowing in a take charge manner while letting the birthday boy be his youthful impish self. Marty added a blast from the past. A bit surprised there were not more musical friends...but it didn't make the show any less enjoyable.

Jorma and Jack provided the usual classic guitar virtuosity and Marty Balin's vocals brought us back with selections from Surrealistic Pillow and an encore of Volunteers. What a great night combined with Hot Tuna standards such as Water Song and a great cover of Jerry Garcia's Sugaree.

From beginning to end, this was not a typical Tuna show. But it was also Tuna at its best. Starting out with a Jack solo into Hesitation. Then the best rendition of I see the Light that I can remember. Jack was pumped, repeatedly dancing on the drum stand. The Airplane tunes were great, with Marty and Teresa. There were classic Tuna hits, #1, Rock me Baby, Water Song, Bar Room, and then Jack remained Funky all night long.

For 2 guys that are now 70+ years old, they can still rock the house! Great guitar interplay between Jorma, Larry Campbell & GE Smith with "Airplane-esque" vocals by Marty Balin & Teresa Wiliams. Highlights included Hesitation Blues, Water Song, Somebody to Love and (Grateful Dead cover) Sugaree.

i've seen hot tuna more times than i can count and this was one of the best. i love the beacon, had front row seats. the only reason i gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is that we were e-mailed to remain in our seats when the show ended for an autograph session which never materialized.

After being a lifelong HT fan, this is my last show. I'm done supporting these guys for a mediocre show. I'd rather see my friends play in a bar. They're more interesting.

The show was amazing. The talent that was on that stage was incredible. Jorma and Jack continue to amaze me and I've been seeing them for forty years, and to have Marty Balin come on stage and run through Airplane classics was fantastic. And G.E. Smith is such a class musician with incredible skill. Last but not least, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams are such as asset to any stage they grace. Larry's talent is unmatched and Teresa's vocals and energy had the whole house jumping.

Most amazing reunion of 3 of the five original Jefferson Airplane members playing 5 original songs. The most significant was Volunteers of America, which is relevant now in terms of Fergurson and Brooklyn. While Marty Balin was dressed in a three piece lounge act suit, his voice was as strong and clear as it was 50 years ago.

One of the best Hot Tuna shows since the late 70s. No not the marathon of those shows, but very tight playing and a lot of fun in the air as Jack celebrated his 70th. Larry Campbell was solid as always, GE Smith interjected some licks here and there and Jorma smiled the whole way and of course adding his unmistakable sound. Only downer was Marty Balins who at times was good, other times I'd prefer he wasn't there. Luckily he only was on stage maybe 10% of the time.

Classic performers, superb songs, flawless skills. Could have done without the 3 Marty Balin solo's though. Jack Cassidy still top bassist in rock and roll.

Abosulutely an amazing show. This was organic rock music at its best. The musicians are time tested professionals who were having a good time among friends. The venue was the Beacon Theater, a beuatiful, very well maintained old New York Theater. Made the experience so much more.

Wow. What a great gathering of talent. A blast to see Marty Balin unite with his Airplane buddies. They sounded awesome while performing great Jefferson Airplane stuff. Hot Tuna blew the doors off the Beacon once again, as they always do yearly. Keep coming back guys... Like Jack said, see you for my eightieth.

Great show all around. Jorma and Jack were superb as always. Larry Cambell is a great addition, so too Theresa Williams. G.E. always brings it. Prior to the show I was excited about the mini-airplane reunion with Marty Balin, and the first few tunes, Plastic Fantastic and 3/5's of a Mile were quite good, but his 3-man band intermission act (ironic given that Tuna began as an Airplane intermission act) was painful. In the end, while I was glad to see him, I won't be chomping on the bit for a repeat guest appearance. Beyond that, the show was a joy.

Went to see Jack's 70th Birthday Bash and was blown away! Jack was bopping around the stage like he was 20 years old ( I wish I could be like him when I hit 70!) Jorma was amazing as always and adding GE Smith and Larry Campbell to the lineup was awesome! Marty was there along with the latest Grace clone and they as my best friend said "We went to a Tuna show and the Airplane came out" ! The only down parts were that Barry seemed "off" missing notes and just looked either sick or confused, and when Marty came out with the Marty Balin Band. It seems like he is past his best songwriting days, and I would not pay to see him solo. That being said, having 1/2 the Airplane on stage and having a 4 hour Tuna show rocked!

I have seen quite a few Hot Tuna shows over the years. Jacks Birthday concert will go down in history as one of the greatest Tuna shows of all time. Bonus was Marty Balin. I never in my life thought I would ever see Jefferson Airplane live. Saturday, December 13, 2014 I did.

Hot Tuna with Guest Marty Balin at the Beacon on 12-13-14 was a classic, historic amazing show. They did 5 Jefferson Airplane tunes (Plastic fantastic lover, 3/5 Mile in 10 seconds, White rabbit , Somebody to Love and Volunteers) as well as the regular Tuna classics- Water Song, Rock me Baby, Hesitation Blues, Hit Single #1, Keep Your lamps, etc.

The show was electric in it's energy and content. It is always a treat to see Larry and Teresa, and they did not disappoint. The only down side is I thought that the sound was not well done, There were moments when the vocals were lost and there was a feedback problem all night But in general it was an event to remember. I have photo's that I took in 1969 of Hot Tuna with Papa John on the stage of the Fillmore East and it brought back great memories

Hot Tuna along with GE Smith ranks in the top 10 of shows I've seen. Theresa Williams voice was incredible and her White Rabbit was the best I've ever heard. Marty Balin was good on the Airplane songs but needs to retire the lounge act.

An excellent show. Jorma was in great voice, and jack was bouncing and prancing about the stage throwing in his bass bombs. Larry Campbell was his usual amazing self no matter what instrument he was playing, and Teresa Williams did some great Grace Slick singing.

YELLOWFEVER
Second and last night of Jorma's 75th birthday bash. I try to see Jorma and Hot Tuna whenever and wherever they are around, as they have never disappointed in the 30 years I've been going to see them. First set was standard Tuna fare, smoking hot with Bow Legged Woman, Knock Kneed Man a personal favorite (our wedding song). Jorma and Jack both, even in their seventies, electric Hot Tuna manages a high energy, over the top performance that will melt concrete. The second set is with somewhat mixed feelings. While there is no questioning their contribution to the Airplane, this came dangerously close to being a Jefferson Airplane cover band. Now, don't get me wrong, this set even blew away the "real" Airplane on their reunion tour in '89, but then again, I went to that to see the Tuna set, not the Airplane reunion. Some good old crusty Jorma and Jack goodies in there, too, though, with the Marty, Paul, and Grace impersonators keeping up as best they could with the rest of the material. That said, Jorma and Jack blew the roof off the place with the guitar and bass on Somebody To Love and Feels So Good (this last sadly, not with Jorma on lead vocals). 1st encore, Volunteers with Jorma and Jack again saving the day there, and a surprisingly good Sugaree for the 2nd encore. You really can't go wrong with Jorma and / or Jack in any configuration, and this was absolutely no exception. Jorma still keeping' it Vital even at 75 - the BBQ King still cooks!
