We love seeing Ian Hunter play, and the Rant Band is also up there on our list of favorite artists to watch, you cannot go wrong by showing up to one of these shows! I might be getting too old for the all-standing venues, but it was still a great show. Hard to complain when Ian's up there giving it HIS all!

The concert included some crowd pleasers, rarities (Sweet Jane, All American Alien Boy), and most of the new album.

The show was fantastic. Seating at the Potowatomi Casino can't be beat. However walking thru the smoke filled casino is pretty gross. Ian Hunters band was excellent. Each musician was strong in their own right and he gave them a chance to showcase their talents. He played favorite old songs and new cuts from his new CD, which we bought. Overall a really good show and we won't hesitate to see him again if we get the chance.

I was fortunate enough to see Ian Hunter the prior evening at L.A.'s Key Club (see my prior review of that show). Though I hadn't been to the Galaxy Theater for quite some time, I wasn't disappointed. Ian's second Southern Cal concert was just as impressive, and the frontman appeared to be a bit more loose -- even sipping wine and champagne toward the end of the evening. The setlist was nearly identical, except that we were treated to "Boy" (from Ian's amazing solo debut) in lieu of "Michael Picasso", and "Letter to Britannia from the Union Jack" as the kick off of the first encore. Ian also omitted "River of Tears" and moved "Girl From the Office" to the second encore. All in all, an incredible experience from one of my all-time favorite artists -- and one who deserves so much more recognition than he gets. Go buy his records, NOW!

Ian was great as usual. He never dissapoints. The spacing was a little strange for one of his shows with almost all the music in the first half except two classic songs (Irene Wilde & Clevelend Rocks) from the last few CD'S he put out. But then to finish off the main set plus not one but two encores consisting of 4 songs then 3 songs he played all vintage Mott the Hoople and a couple of his own songs. He could not have ended the show any better. Can't wait to see him again!

Ian Hunter at the Fillmore on January 28th was incredible! It's amazing that guy in his early seventies can look that good and rock so hard! He performed a number of songs from his latest CD, "Man Overboard" and a lot of more obscure numbers culled from just about everyone of his solo albums. One of his encore numbers was Somewhere from West Side Story . That was totally unexpected and Ian performed a very heartfelt rendition of that classic song. He followed it up with All the Way From Memphis and closed out the show with a number of Mott the Hoople standards that had the crowd bouncing on the floor and raising the roof.

Ian Hunter in a rare performance at the El Rey Theatre did NOT disappoint his eager fans. Playing a tasteful mix of newer songs and older classics, his performance was well paced and vital, not a nostalgia act at all. His newer material is very strong. He saved most of the Mott the Hoople hits for the latter part of the show, and his two powerful encores left the audience satisfied. I was glad to finally get to see him after being a fan since the 1970s.

Ian Hunter is simply an amazingly gifted songwriter who has been unfairly overlooked for decades. His body of work speaks for itself, and the faithful were treated to a wide variety of that work, including several cuts from his latest excellent effort "Man Overboard". His touring band was tight, focused and brought a great groove to the tunes. I can only wish that I have the stamina, energy and ability to enjoy myself the way Mr. Hunter did at the Key Club when I'm his age (70). From the opening notes of "Sea Diver" (an early Mott the Hoople song) to the surprising inclusion of "Dancing On the Moon", this was a night to enjoy one of England's all-time best exports. He even covered "Somewhere" from West Side Story as the opener of his first encore, and then treated us to a second encore set, during which he blazed through a tasty Mott medley.

Ian and Rant Band played a great show. Ian's pipes are in great form and he has amazing energy. A number of standard songs and some surprises in the set list. Started a little late but played a good long and strong set. Band sounded tight too. Ian had one gaffe in the lyrics. He asked the audience for the line (of course we obliged) - gave us all a good laugh.

At 71 years of age Ian Hunter showed what a concert should be,mixing classic material with newer tracks, performing them seamlessly and with passion. I was amazed at how strong his voice still is after all these years, and his band complemented him perfectly.A nd personally it was a pleasure not to be the oldest member of the audience for a change.

For a 71 year old, Hunter still sounds in pretty good voice (though he did change the phrasing on some pieces, one would assume to accommodate his singing abilities/limitations, rather than as an artistic improvisation) and is still pretty energetic on stage. The classic Mott material sounded pretty good, as the band did a good job of copping the lead tones of the guitars and so on. I was less familiar with the more recent solo material (from the 90's and beyond) and was less impressed with it. That material seemed a bit more pedestrian, though lyrically it remained quite strong, which is not a big surprise, given Hunter's long and strong track record in that regard. Personally, I was especially pleased that he did two pieces from his criminally overlooked 2nd solo LP, "All American Alien Boy" (my favorite of his post-Mott LPs!), though I would have preferred to hear the title track and "God", rather than "Irene Wilde" and "Letter to Brittania from the Union Jack" (though both pieces were quite poignant and it was a big surprise to me that out of all the things he could have selected from his solo work and that specific LP that he would have selected the latter piece). Overall, it was a pretty good, but not great show; there was certainly a bit of a "greatest hits review tour " vibe to it. That being stated, I have seen many "classic rock legends" fare a whole lot worse in shows 20, 30 years after their peak fame. If you were a big fan of Mott back in the day, you probably would enjoy this show.

Ian Hunter continues to prove himself as a timeless Rockers. He was as good Thursday night at 74 years of age as he was 10 years ago at 64 years of age. His voice is strong and clear, he is filled with energy, and he offered a wonderful mix of tunes from his catalog of hits. Jumping from Rockers to ballads and back to rockers, the entire night was trip down memory lane circa 1972 all the way up to his latest excellent album. This guy has a wonderful body of work. Whether it be The golden Age of Rock n Roll, Once Bitten Twice Shy, Roll Away the Stone, All American Alien Boy, All the Way From Memphis. Dead Man Walking, or his Biggest hit penned by his buddy David Bowie "All the Young Dudes"....you will again and again be overjoyed that you bought your ticket to this event. The man has NOT lost a step. He is a true Rocker, a true entertainer. I look forward to the next time I sit in his audience!

A very good show. Ian is still playing and singing with lots of energy and attitude. If you plan to see him, I recommend listening to his latest release "When I'm President" if you haven't already. Contains several excellent new songs which he played at the show. I wasn't too enamoured of the venue though, primarily due to the dinner seating arrangement. You pay extra to get a table up front and have dinner before the show. This might be OK for a comedy show or easy listening, but for a rock show it doesn't work so well. Those of us who came just for the music got stuck in the back.

Paramount is a great place overall, i've never been there. Huntington Station, (LI) NY area pretty nice, sorta upscale suburbia. cabs are sorta high$. not like NYC. @ $19 for 2 people to go @ 8 miles. Anyway, it was a great show with good sound and the venue has great sight lines (actually good viewing everywhere, i checked out a few areas). + good quality video monitors on each side of the stage and a few at the rear bar. as for Ian, i don't think i've EVER seen him when he wasn't great. this was no exception. great show, sound, performance. as far as the set list, i prob. can't list all the songs (and def. not their order). BUT… the latest release was represented well…What For, Prez, Black Tears, Just the Way You Look, Ta Shunka Witco, and part of Life toward the end. Fatally Flawed was a highlight and ALL of them were done really well. "When I'm President" IS a great, solid record. Ian only touched Rant once i believe, Wash Us Away (a great song but wish 1-2 more (yeah, i'm nit picking a lil). DRAG he did not touch any of Shrunken Heads! would've liked to hear perhaps Shrunken Heads, Soul of America, Fuss About Nothing… Ian added in "It Ain't Easy when You Fall" and a rollicking Once Bitten, Twice Shy from the 1st solo the latter which conjures up memory of Mick Ronson and his blistering solo. also, did Goodnight, Michael Picasso. very moving as always. others like, a great Just Another Night… Flowers are Not Enough (solid song but not me fav). he did some Mott of course… All the Way from Memphis, Swan Song, Saturday Nite, Sweet Jane an ending encore of Dudes w/ Parker joining which was joyous. one of highlights for me was getting to hear All American Alien Boy in concert for the 1st time. and he did it great!! Mr. Ian Hunter is definitely one of the best songwriters ever. can be touching, cynical, topical, funny, etc. and with some of the best lyrics in 'rock'. LONG LIVE IAN HUNTER!!… and his band…

Yeah second show in the second night having seen the El Rey show the night before. Drove in from Phoenix, arizona for these. Having missed the Mott The Hoople reunion in london a couple years back wasn't going to miss these shows. Everybit as good if not better than he was in 2006 when he did his last small west coast tour. Loved the entire set list enjoyed the new and the old. Odd place the Galaxy, kind of cartoonish location to play, one would need to see it to understand.

Considering he's 70-ish, pretty amazing show put on by Mott the Hoople! He played all the hits (on guitar AND keyboards) plus a bunch of cool "deep cut" stuff that I hadn't necessarily heard before, but highly entertaining nevertheless. Great band, great venue and extra added bonus JOHNNY DEPP showed up @ end of show to play along on "Sweet Jane." So yeah a true rock & roll legend doing his thang and doing it as well as - if not better than - other rock dudes half his age.

I've now been seeing Ian Hunter for over 30 years, and while we all are aging, this 78 year old man seems ageless. Not one to rest on his laurels (and they are significant, both with Mott the Hoople and as an amazing solo artist) this show was in support of last year's incredible "Fingers Crossed" record (yes, I still call them records). While the venue was small, and the audience nowhere near the numbers from his 70s heyday, every person there was ecstatic to see their hero. The set list was incredible, and the title track from the new record may have been my favorite moment (though "Guiding Light" ranks right up there). The Rant Band continues to amaze and, with Ian's stellar songwriting skills, they simply crush it. Oh yeah, and Johnny Depp came out for "Bastard", "Sweet Jane" and "All the Young Dudes", playing some nice rhythm guitar...but the real star was Mr. Patterson himself -- the UK's answer to Dylan, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard all rolled into one. Simply Fantastic. .

This was a rock-solid show by Ian and the Rant Band - he opened with The Moon Upstairs from Brain Capers - the Rant Band ripped into it from the 1st note as Ian stalked the stage, belting out those potent lyrics fiercely - as he sipped a glass of champagne! The set was packed with favorites, and he brought opener Chuck Prophet out for Roll Away the Stone near the end, seguing into a bit of Saturday Gigs, a terrific version of All the Young Dudes and finally Goodnight Irene. Surely some in the audience didn't realize Ian is now 78(!)- he moved, sang, strummed and pounded the ivories with more energy and expertise than many half that age. Suggestion to improve? Have a merchandise table - surprising there wasn't one. Since the Uris theatre gig on Broadway '74 my friends and I have never seen an Ian (or Mott) show without grabbing a couple of T-shirts, posters etc.. The signed posters at last year's Fillmore show were awesome - I'd have bought several this year if they'd had them for sale.

In a small venue downtown called the Telegram Ballroom, Ian Hunter (Mott the Hoople) looked and sounded pretty good for 78 years old. He played most of his best known songs (except for "Cleveland Rocks") as well as other hardcore fan favorites. A little surprise guest appearance towards the end of the show was made by Johnny Depp on guitar. I think he was more of a distraction than attraction as he strutted around with his low hanging guitar behind Ian and his 2 guitarists. While Depp may actually be a musician it just felt more like I'll wonder around like an aimless drunk behind the front line of the band so I don't steal attention ( but pay attention to me while I look cool but not really like I'm having fun as part of the band ). He would just hit an accent chord here and there but not really strum along in rhythm with the rest of the band. He didn't really interact with the members of the Band. I'm not even sure if he hit the right chords at the right time or we could even really hear his guitar. Well see, he managed to even distract this report. Hunter's band played great, particularly the primary lead guitarist as Hunter switched back and forth from acoustic guitar and digital piano. The opener, Scott McCaughey (from a Seattle 80's formed band called Young Fresh Fellows ) was pretty entertaining solo with acoustic guitar and a friend on accordion or mandolin. He was a seasoned rock' n roll survivor who will probably just keep on going.

Ian Hunter was very good - especially when you consider he is 78 yrs old and still blows much younger guys away. Tetragram is one of the best venues in LA to see a show. Nice to have room to move around, go up close to see band for awhile, drop back, talk to friends, etc. Not many places left like that! A lot of places stick you in seats and you cannot talk, move or enjoy a rock n' roll show the way you should! Only drawback to this show was that it was an old crowd - almost exclusively male and not very fired up. This band would have had everyone jumping and dancing years ago,Most of the patrons could only bob their heads now and actually saw a lady with a and whacked people in the legs to move out of her way!

I never miss an Ian Hunter tour, and he never disappoints! He's really as good as he ever was, and that's saying a lot. I even adore his more recent material ("When I'm President"), and that's unusual for a classic act. His Rant Band is perfect as well--a really talented bunch of fellows. The Teragram is a newer venue, and we really liked it. No seating just so you're clear on that --it's a BALLROOM. Small (200 cap?), so not a bad sight-line in the place. They have a small cafe that opens at show time, and we went in and had drinks and baja tacos which were really tasty. Johnny Depp joined the band for a few songs at the end of the show--that was fun!

The first couple songs didn't quite come together - and then, WHAM. Ian's voice kicked in, the band was tight and natural, and the show never stopped, despite the lead guitarist having equipment issues. Nice mix of new and legendary material, slow stuff and high-energy rockers. Everyone left with huge smiles. This was my first time at this venue - I'll be back. For each year he spends performing with the Rant Band, Ian Hunter seems to shed a year from his own age. Looking fit and ready to tussle at 75, Hunter stalked the Variety Playhouse Stage with his tight-knit top-notch band, commanding material from his own career and his days with Mott the Hoople. He played obscurities such as "Something to Believe In," "Teacher," and "Now Is The Time," and hits "All the Way From Memphis," "Sweet Jane," "Once Bitten Twice Shy," "Just Another Night," and "All The Young Dudes." He reinvigorated "Bastard" and "Standing In My My Light," and dished out a handful of tracks from his latest release, "When I'm President." The band is beyond tight with Mr. Hunter at the helm. His current tour embraces the U.S., the U.K., Europe and Japan. Long Live Ian Hunter!

What a fantastic show! If you are a fan of Ian's in any form I would highly recommend that you attend this show. As a fan of Mott and Ian's solo career throught the mid-80's I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. I hadn't kept up with Ian's catalog but did google him to find he had some highly thought of releases including his last one in 2012. I thought thast could be good or bad, if it was so well recieved he might play the whole darn thing and I wouldn't know much of the show. PERISH THE THOUGHT! This show flat out rocked and was well over two hours. Ian was in great voice and high energy and his Rant Band is wonderful. Even the songs that I didn't know (and there weren't that many) were very good and didn't stop the show at all. I took a friend with me (ok...dragged a friend with me) and he came away very impressed and happy he went, said it was one of the best shows he had seen in a while. ROCK ON IAN HUNTER!!!!

Ian Hunter is one of my favorite artists, and I'm always anxious to see him when he comes to the west coast. With a new CD out, he naturally chose to focus on newer material which many in the crowd seemed unfamiliar with. Naturally, the crowd came alive when he dipped into the Mott the Hoople archive. I was particularly pleased with his choice of the "The Moon Upstairs," which is probably the heaviest song in the Mott the Hoople catalog. His band, as always, was excellent. He has changed backing musicians a lot over the years, but they always come with the necessary chops, and he leads them like a maestro. I was very happy that there was no opening band. The El Rey has a large, open floor with no seating that would allow you to see the show. An Ian Hunter crowed is usually a median age of 50+. That's a lot of standing for the age group. Ian would be wise to book future shows in a hall with seating.

First, see my review of Ian's show at The Canyon two night earlier. Second, if I had the time, I would have flown to San Francisco to see him Friday night at The Filmore. This is a musician's musician, who is on a MAJOR roll in what has otherwise been a stellar solo career. I can't think of any singer-songwriters of his generation (save maybe Dylan) who's last four albums have been so astonishingly and consistently GREAT. Ian and the Rant Band were more loose in LA than in Agoura Hills, and seemed like they were really enjoying themselves -- even at each other's expense. (Guitarist James Maestro, in the middle of a rocker (think it was 23A Swan Hill), jumped and took a fall backwards over a monitor...but in true rock 'n' roll fashion, he kept right on playing, laughing the whole time.) The set list was amazing, and varied a bit from The Canyon. Fortunately, Ian played "Michael Picasso" his beautiful homage to the late great Mick Ronson and maybe my favorite of his compositions. (As someone whose child died less than two years ago, this tune perfectly describes the anguish, sorrow and heartache that one experiences from the loss of a loved one.) Ian also played "Now Is the Time", which, along with "Picasso" is from his overlooked 1996 "Artful Dodger" album. If you want to add great music to your collection, you can't go wrong with Ian. And if you want to start somewhere, pick up his newest release "When I'm President". Simply amazing.

I am continually amazed by this man. He's the best songwriter most people have never heard of, and those that have heard of him consider him a one-hit wonder with either "All the Young Dudes" (from his Mott the Hoople days) or "Once Bitten Twice Shy" (covered by Great White, among others (although the original is still the best)). He put on a clinic in good time rock and roll, tender and heartfelt ballads, and politically relevant tunes at The Canyon. Musicians half his age can't pull off what Ian does. The Rant Band is incredible, and compliments the Man and his Music especially well. I've seen him several times now, and this show (along with his subsequent show at the El Rey (which I'll review separately)) ranked among the best. If you haven't heard of Ian Hunter, check out his incredible solo work. And, if you think he's a one-hit wonder, think again...you're in for a wonderful set of surprises for your ears.

This is the second time I saw Ian Hunter and The Rant Band at the beautifully Art Deco El Ray in Los Angeles. Ian and the Rant lads never disappoint, but the shows that have followed the release of Hunter's stunning out and out rocker "When I Am President" have been nothing short of stellar. Ian has been working with the same band for quite a while now, and they have become quite a formidable team of musicians. Mr. Hunter's muses have been good to him and he has a string of excellent albums beginning in 2001 with Rant. When I am President is, in my opinion, his strongest album since 1979s You're Never Alone With A Scchizophrenic. In a show with many highlights, his new songs stand out. the title song, Black Eyes, What For, and Ta Shanka Witco stand besides his best and brightest of earlier times. Ian and the Ranters played non-stop for about two hours, with back to back songs, no breaks and no chatter... Straight out rock and roll. Difficult to pick a highlight in a show that was pretty much all highlights, but hearing The Moon Upstairs from Mott the Hoople's Brain Capers was something to behold. Ian can snarl with more attitude than so-called rockers who are a fraction of his age. Dennis DaBrizzi on keyboards blew the roof off the place and it was a rock and roll moment guaranteed to take anyone back to the heyday of the 1970s. A back to back tribute to two incredible musicians; the rarely heard "Now is the Time" written for Queen's Freddie Mercury, (Mott the Hoople was the only band that Queen ever opened for), and "Michael Picasso" , Ian's ode to his friend and collegue Mick Ronson. It was a real moment for those of us who have seen Ian perform over the years. The musicians, as I said earlier, are amazing. At one point, James Mastro on guitar, tripped over bassist Paul Page's speaker, landed on his back, and never missed a note... Kept playin ON HIS BACK until his part was over, got up and resumed as if nothing had happened. Mark Bosch is the perfect Hunter guitarist, with not just a little Ronno in him, but with abundant style of his own. Mastro is no second fiddle, plays with great style has is a genius of mouth-watering tonality. He also plays multiple stringed instruments. Paul Page and Steve Holley keep the beat and groove going like a well tuned engine.... And what a grove they have. The show ended with some Mott favorites Roll Away the Stone, Saturday Gigs, and All the Young Dudes. They may not be the youngest of dudes, but they certainly are some of the most rocking dudes you could ever hear. I cannot think of many people in their respective fields that are in their prime at 73, but Ian Hunter bucks that trend and is writing and performing some of the best work of his long career... And he has a fantastic catalogue of songs to choose from. Must see, (and hear) rock and roll.

A dream come true.....got to go to the Fillmore. Been wanting to go there since the sixties. Great venue but I wonder if the floor has been cleaned since the sixties....very sticky...almost pulled my shoes off. Ian Hunter and his band were great as always. A wonderful night.

Ian Hunter is rock'n roll - it's in his blood. The songs, the lyrics, the performance - he takes you there! The man is in his seventies! His contemporaries are content with shoveling out "greatest hits" shows - not Ian - he's still a working artist who believes in his songs and on this night showcased a good number of them. Recommending this artist is not only a "no brainer", it's a must! Of note his supporting band members, "The Rant Band" are a top notch of working professionals whose resumes are second to none.

Ian Hunter tore up the Paramount last Sunday night with his new songs and great backing band. His voice, a bit lower and raspier, never sounded better and his new songs reminded me just how far off track we are with rock and roll nowadays. And he ended the show with an incredible version of of "all the young dudes" something of an anthem to youth. It was a Great show and glad I decided to leave my comfortable couch to catch it.

Ian Hunter displayed his long time rock n roll lineage. Playing songs from his Mott The Hoople day's through his solo career. He made the Paramount feel like a small club, working the crowd.

What a great show. The band was awesome and their new material was really good. We saw the show last year at the Paradise, and this show featured a bit more of their new songs, and really rocked. Ian Hunter and Mott the Hoople are a huge inspiration on my husband who was very influenced by his music in the 70's and went on to be part of the punk rock scene in Boston. Ian Hunter is a real rocker, one of the true greats and everyone should get out to see him when he plays at the Paradise next year.

Ian Hunter puts on one hell of a show! He played for 2 hours in the small venue where everyone has a great view and the sound was good not great, problem with the microphone backfeed.. BUT everyone was really rocking it. We all had a great time. He mixed it up with both new and old stuff, which was nice. He is over 70 and puts the kids to shame!

Another fabulous performance by Ian and his Rant Band. He played for almost 2 solid hours. Great mix and for a guy that is 72 years of age he can still rock the house. He looks and acts like a guy 20 years his junior. My only wish is that I could see him play 4 times a year, every year!!!!

Saw Ian Hunter for the first time on 12/1 at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston and was blown away from the energy of Ian & The Rant band. I've been to a few shows lately, but this was a real treat and my favorite show in years. Ian Hunter for president!

Lots and lots of excellent new tunes with some oldies thrown in for good measure. Great band. Ian is still rocking at 72 years. Go see him when you can he tours every couple of years but the tours are short so you might have to drive a little to get to a show. Well worth it for Mott fans as well as Ian fans.

simply put Ian and his band absolutely destroyed the place. He's 72 and hasnt lost a thing off his fastball. he came with the same enrgy as the first time i saw him in 79. the encore was mindblowing . "The moon upstairs" blew the room away and his new stuff is as good as anything he's done

This was only the second time that I have been able to see Ian Hunter, doesn't come to our area much, for me it has been over twenty years ago. The show was great has a great band and can still rock. I was surprised at how many of his earlyer songs he did, it was nice to hear them again. Hopefully it won't be as long this time until he returns to Portland. He is one of the greats and is often over looked,so if you have a chance to see Ian Hunter do it you won't be dissapointed.
