I have never seen Shawn Phillips in concert before, and enjoyed every minute of this evening. I had his albums Collaboration and Second Contribution since I was 14 yrs old. His voice is amazing still and he has such a gift as an artist. My 16 yr old daughter came with & we sat front row center~she grew up hearing this music and enjoyed it so much also. PLEASE COME BACK TO MINNESOTA SOON SHAWN, YOU ARE AMAZING!!!

What a fabulous show he put on. He was fantastic and his guitar solo was phenomenal. I heard a guy behind me say is this a Jimi Hendrix concert? I was overwhelmed by his ability to shred the guitar.

Shawn gave a great show to an enthusiastic crowd at the Tralf in Buffalo, NY on May 07th. He played for two hours solo, giving us many gems from the past, classics over the years and some newer things. Shawn gave us great background on the history of the songs. Afterwards he graciously signed any and all items that the fans brought. In one case he resigned an guitar that one fan had originally signed by Shawn in 2008.

To say I was jazzed to find out Shawn Phillips was still making music is a severe understatement. I had a smile on my face all day Saturday in anticipation. His mastery of the voice and guitar are still there despite the ripe old age of 67. I fell in love with his music and songwriting in the mid 70's when I was in college. His five and a half octave range allowed him to hit the highest notes you can imagine with a lilt. And while his voice is now in the four+ octave range, he still has the power to shake your nerves with effortless ease. And the whispering interludes take your breath. And the guitar work!! Oh my! Stunning in its power, vibrant in its magnificent melodies and so well crafted and presented with at times with beautiful soft grace, at others with amazing imagination and still others with the unmistakable style that makes you FEEL his songs. When I say feel his songs, this is what I mean. While I sat with my wife holding and squeezing her hand with every note to the many songs I knew by heart. She could feel my absolute joy at seeing the man with his music that so affected my youth. My smile hurt. The man sitting in front of me was in tears several times during the night. He obviously had an equal but very different emotional reaction to these same songs. I knew it was going to be special when Shawn announced at the start of the concert that he was going to perform many songs he had not performed for thirty five years. That was the era that I loved as did the man sitting in front of me. We were comrades by the end of the evening. Shawn came out to chat with his fans, ending a perfect evening. I will definitely go to his website for future concerts and to update my collection.

Shawn Phillips was a great show to go and see. The venue was small and allowed everyone to have a good seat. Shawn's vocals are absolutely as pure as they were 40 years ago!!! He performed many of his favorites from the 70's as well as new music. I would highly recommend going to see him next time he is in town.

Shawn Phillips is one of the greatest all time musicians. It's been a long time since he's been to Phoenix and it was truly a pleasure and delight to see him here again. Says he'll be back next year!! If I could, I'd buy my tickets now!

Shawn played an amazing show on the 22nd. He dove into in his vast collection of gems and came out with a great set that spanned his entire career. Opening up with London Town from his first albums he gave the crowd plenty of old, new and CLASICS IN THE TWO HOUR PLUS SHOW. The large sampling of material from Collaboration was a great thrill to hear live as well as Scmaltz Walz nd F Sharp Splendor from Second Contribution.

I love Shawn's talent although the way he was singing some of the songs I couldnt hear him. Then he would blast his voice. But it was agrivating. To the point where I even left the show early; which is a serious no-no in my book. But it was just too agrivating. With that I know I missed some of my favorite songs; which bums me out.

Shawn is one of the few artists, who at this age, has maintained his amazing voice. I enjoyed the concert very much. The venue was perfect. He is so delightful and entertaining as well....in between his guitar changes. True solid artist.

Shawn is such an incredible talent, both musically and vocally. Age has certainly not slowed him down one bit. He performed songs from 35 years ago and they sounded so much like the original cuts. He's very down to earth and warm in his back and forth with the audience. Technologically adept, he used computer generated drums and guitar to perform with, and his guitar playing is amazing. I am glad I went to the show. Lots of memories. I will never forget the summer of 1976 lying in a field in the Adirondacks watching the stars and listening to "Faces" on a small cassette player. Thanks, Sandi :-)

Amazing to say the least. One man, one guitar (with a little electronica) and one great show. Shawn still has the incredible range in his voice and sings with the same energy and style of his records. He played a ton of stuff from his early classics - Contribution, Collaboration and 2nd Contribution. His stories about the music are phenomenal too. Don't miss it.

The Fitzgerald Theatre was an excellent venue for the recent appearance of our "own local favorite" singer & songwriter, Shawn Phillips. An amazing artist still at the top of his game! He played the usual crowd favorites and seemed very relaxed, being it was the last show of this long 7 month, 50+ concert North American Tour. The highlight of the evening was the extensive electric jam sessions remenistic of the early shows in his 50+ year long career. A magical evening indeed! Retire Mr. Phillips? Not a chance.

Shawn is amazing, there is no disputing that. We had great seats front and to the side. I took a friend that did not know Shawn for the 35 years I have been listening. She enjoyed it but I would have to say that the guitar playing was loud compared to the vocals. I love his vocals and would like to have heard that pure voice come across with the music behind it. That is what it seems like to me when I listen to the cd's and use to the listen to the albums. So if you are listening Shawn, I would pay to see you again but would like to hear you.

The audience clearly wanted to hear more "old stuff" from the 70's. It was disappointing in that respect but otherwise good.

Shawn Phillips may have played his last concert live here in the US but it is clear that he still continues to improve on his past works like his trademark song "Woman" but also in his new songs like "Ascent" currently being arranged by Paul Buckmaster Shawns long time collaborater. Shawn started in the 60's and early 70's folk -rock scene and his message to us "simple folk" has once again hit home as we watch the world struggle to find a balance between the rich and the poor. Occupy Wall Street, Wars around the globe, itellectual solutions rather than the clarity of "love" for one another continues to be themes we need to resolve. As a poet and an artist Shawn's songs reflects what our time needs to hear. Wish him well and hope he continues to share his gift!

It was the worst concert I have ever been to. I guess I went to relive the 70's- sure was a lot of old farts there. (I cant be that old - Am I??) Shawn promised a special night , as it was the last venue of his tour. It was basically Shawn without any live back up musicians- just a computer simulator for needed drums, guitar tracks and possibly voice?? For $50 I could of gone to Nicks bar in South St Paul and heard better and had 15 Rolling Rocks.

This was a Birthday Present from my Husband and we had the best time. It was in such an intimate setting I could have sat there for hours and listened to Shawn sing. Everyone around us was just enjoying the concert so much. We all gave Shawn a Standing OVation at the end as a sign of respect. We Love you Shawn keep rockin'

We had a very good time. Pitch perfect music. It brought back good memories of the very early \u201870s and a time of tranquility and college life. I was rewarded with many favorite songs and their rendition was spot on. I am not an artist. But sometimes, 5 layers of real time recording of instruments were a bit much and blended too much sound together. It has been a long time since I ve seen Shawn (the old Guthrie in the \u201880 s). I was not dissapointed!!! I am going to fix up the old turn table and listen again.

Great performance and great performer. He still has a wonderful voice - however his music was over amped and drowned him out - that's why I only did 4 stars.

Shawn Phillips has been my all time favorite musician for over 35 years and after last Saturday night's concert he continues to be. Obviously his octave range, the energy of emotion in his voice, the words (which I know by heart), and his talent on the guitar keep me in awe. I brought my Son with me this time (I go to most of his concerts) and he was sitting forward almost the entire time soaking him in. Please keep Shawn coming back to Minneapolis!

Shawn still has an amazing voice - would have liked less of the "computerized music" used. Too much time was spent adjusting - if we were the last performance of the tour - the set should have been more prepared. Also, wish he would have sang more from older albums like second contribution. You could tell the crowd felt this way too - as they were more responsive when these songs were performed.

Not a good experience! It's time for Shawn Phillips to retire. I guess he can't afford a sound guy, so he was constantly adjusting his sound.... very distracting. He had pre recorded backup music that sounded BAD. He had a cough, and I don't think he was sick. His voice is getting weak. Myself and 4 others I went to the concert with, walked out after 5 songs. I still love his cd's that I have, He just needs to stop entertaining live, for money.

I haven't seen Shawn perform in over 15 years and this was the first time I caught him at the Rythm Room. Listening to Shawn is like hearing angels. He still has that amazing range, didn't miss a note even though it was obvious he was suffering from a cough. I have been in love with his music since I was 14 and, even after 40 years, never tire of it. There is no other musician who can sing, write and play music to compare him to. Wish I could have gone to Cottonwood to see him again. I hope he comes back again soon. He played for a full 2 hours until kicked out as there was another show scheduled at 8:00. Shawn autographed album jackets and CDs/DVDs that he had on sale.

Shawn Phillilps played the Rhythm Room in Phoenix Az on Satuday night Sept 10th. He was more awesome than he's ever been. Shawn is one of the finest musicians to ever hit this earth. He may be little known, only because of politics in the music industry, but he was a big name in his time and he's still a big name to me! He ROCKED the house. I can still feel the riffs in my soul. Thank you Shawn once again for coming to Phoenix and please please please come again next year!!!

As usual Shawn Phillips put on an increadable show. Show started right on time. He had a little problem with either a cough or a throat issue but worked thru it and after the first hour it wasn't an issue. I saw Shawn for the first time back in 1973 and he has never put on a bad show.

I haven't seen Shawn for about 30 years give or take. I brought my girlfriend with me and she didn't even know who he was. I have to say we had a really good time and she even enjoyed herself. In my mind I could hear the old Shawn Phillips so when he forgot the lyrics or seemed to stumble through a song I was a little disappointed, however, my friend said it was great because she didn' know the lyrics or any of the songs so there you are.

Shawn Phillips did a great two hour, non-stop show. His setlist included many of his standards (such as Woman, Miss Lonely, Case Diess, 8500 Years, etc) and new titles that he has not yet recorded. It would be hard to beat this performance for vocal and instrumental excellence.

This show was everything I expected out of such a talented musician. His music, his voice, his personality, made this show a warm and inviting place to be on a Saturday evening. He took the time to meet the people that love and have been following him for years. It's been 36 years for me and never tire of his music. He had even played some music that he hasn't even recorded yet. He leaves you with a renewed sense of self worth.

I saw Shawn Phillips for the first time when I was 22 years old at Kleinhanns from the sixth row, I loved him then and I still do. I took my boyfriend who had never heard him before and he was very impressed with Shawns vocals. It was my birthday on May 7th and the night was special just seeing and hearing Shawn again. Keep the music coming....

I went with a friend who'd never heard of Shawn, and the (now more mature) artist didn't disappoint. He still has a marvelous vocal range particularly considering the passage of time since the recording of his earliest works. He genuinely seemed to enjoy playing The Tralf, commenting thet he "loved this room" (some of the best acoustics to be found in a club type atmosphere). He played a solid two hours and was brought back for an encore. It seemed like half the room stood in line for a chance to meet and greet him, and have him sign a disc. after the show Good to see another older artist that still has his chops, and isn't a parody of himself. We sat next to a couple from New Hampshire that took the trip to see him, and in so doing, made a couple of new friends that night. I think the old hippie in him would've liked knowing that!.

Shawn was amazing, his personality and wit were showing through. This is the first time that I have seen him include some of the highly orchestrated songs from Second Contribution with the aide of his Apple computer. It was a sheer joy to be a witness. The crowd at the Red Light Cafe were true fans, they knew when to stay quiet and when to clap and everyone was respectful of the artist.

Who knew? 67 years old and his voice sounds like it did in the Seventies. He still has that 3-octave range, and this coming off nursing a cold! It wasn't until I saw him live, for the first time, that I realized what an accomplished guitarist he is as well. Simply put, a most satisfactory evening. I highly recommend seeing him in such an intimate setting as The Red Light.
