If and /or when an artist is still playing their music on tours and TV shows at 70 years old (like Johnny Winter is) the question remains WHY is he still doing it. Its not about the fame (he's already had that), its not about the money (he's got that too), and its certainly not about the Fad of the day (he was once very popular with the young'ns) so why isn't he at home with his family and enjoying the rest of his life? He IS enjoying his life! Its about the MUSIC! The minute its NOT about the music then its time to retire. Johnny Winter proved my statement by the simple fact that he's still doing it at 70 and shows no sign of retiring from his current WORLD tour. The bottom line is, if you're into the fad of the day that you'd hear on the top of the pop charts at the moment ,then Johnny Winter is NOT for you but of you like American blues played with ferociousness and at the same time lustfully simple then Johnny Winter is your cup of tea. From the moment the band started playing and Joe Perry of Aerosmith introducing him to the last song, it was a total blast! The only not enjoyable part was the P.A. sound. We couldn't hear Johnny's voice or the lyrics to the songs.

Johnny actually invited me on his bus with Bass Player Scott Spray and Guitarist Paul Nelson and signed a photo of the band, his CD, and my Fender Strat !! It was totally amazing and he was so nice to everyone you don't see that kind of situation anymore. The show was a Classic Johnny Winter come out smokin !! He still has an incredible drive and has survived longevity in his musical career. I did see him at the Eric Clapton Crossroads in 2009 and Derek Trucks had a big smile on his face playing next to him I could sense Derek's total respect for Johnny . Everyone had great comments after this show and I would go to another one in a heartbeat . He is a Legend in our times and I would recommend everyone seeing this great musician ! Steve Squires / Band

I don't care how old he is, he knows how to wail on a guitar! It was so loud, my ears were ringing after I left. I wish I could have gotten his autograph after the show. He was not feeling good, but I heard he did come out and sign, only after I left. It was very cold that night. I had an awesome time!

Johnny might be sitting, but he is still rocking. Rather than playing all blues, he played several rocking hits. The blues were also great.. Not a slow moment in the show. The back up band was tight. He might be having physical problems, but musically he's back on track. Plenty loud, so if you have sensitive ears put in some cotton. The Birchmere is a great place to see a show. Food prices are a little high but huge portions. This show is a must for his fans.

The man has still got it! While Johnny may have to have a bit of assistance getting to the chair on stage, once he was seated, blues and the best git tar came blasting out. Love that little guitar Johnny uses. Red House, Bony Marony, Highway 61... all came off as fresh as the day they were originated. Birchmere is the premier place to catch the best shows. Love Johnny Winter and love the Birchmere. Cudos to the Birchmere for providing a great place, with great food and drinks, and for booking great acts that are still around.

I'd always wanted to see a performance at the Birchmere, but this was my first time. I loved the venue for simplicity--no big gimmicky razzle dazzle, just great musicians in an intimate setting. Johnny Winter's band played consistently great music. It is rare to listen to 4 musicians who play as well together and who are as individually accomplished.

Johnny Winter can still play the blues like 30 years ago. Most of the time he didn't even look at the guitar ,but his fingers knew just where to go! Bonie Moroni,Mojo Boogie,Highway 61,etc..was the theme of the set.TOTAL BLUES.I was a little disappointed he did'nt play any of the 70's progressive rock stuff like Rock N Roll Hootchie Koo,Still Alive N Well and any of the Johnny Winter And albums when he played with Rick Derringer. And none of Rolling Stones covers that he does so well. But all in all if you're a Johnny fan you wont be disappointed, the band is tight and talented. And Johnny didn't miss a note!

Venue was great. We will watch for more events. The concert was almost all up tempo and Johnny was often drowned out by his backing band. I had looked forward to some of johnny's acoustic country delta blues but it was not to be. The set was too short but johnny looks so frail maybe that's all he can do. Actually, the band sounded just as good without johnny when they opened the set. I was a little disappointed. But I got to see johnny live and that was cool!

of course Johnny can't do what he used to. He has an excellent back up band and can still play better than a lot of up coming guitarists. His voice always was gutteral. He is for people who remember and for people who want to see a living legend. He started playing at 8pm and was done by 10 so us senior citizens could get to bed at a decent hour! Plays the geriatric blues like no other.

Johnny Winter is Johnny Winter. Stroke or no stroke. He played a mean slide and was picking good. He sounded good as well. The pa in the house was lousy, at least on the stage and was too loud. Johnny still had his magic touch. Jam On Dude. Happy picking I would have liked him to do some songs himself, Key to the highway or something mellow like that.

When I was 11 years old, my older sister had one of those cheap stereos with clip-on speakers and a fold out turntable. I would unclip the speakers and put them up to my ears and blast that first Johnny Winter album every chance I got. I got my first chance to see him when I was 15 years old (1975 at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago), and have only missed two of his Chicago show since. I'm guessing that I've seen 18 to 20 Johnny Winter shows. It is always a treat to see Johnny, it's become a family tradition, and it's an event for us every time he comes to town. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, and he was unbelievably gracious. We're all happy to see his health improving (we were pretty worried for a while there). I loved the show, as did the other 9 folks I went with. My only wish -- and this is because I see him so often -- is that he would take some liberties with his set list. He has such a deep catalog of amazing material, yet 90% of the set has been the same over the past ten years or so. I saw one show at the Park West in the early 80's where he went off the set list entirely and just played what he felt like for almost three hours. Of the hundreds of shows I've seen in my life, that was one of the best. If you've never seen him, you owe it to yourself to see one of the true blues greats. He is the genuine article.

First, the bad. BB King s is one of the worst venues I ve been to in NYC, and I only go there to see very special people. No character/atmosphere, bad sight lines (unless you get there very early, which means you re almost obligated to eat their mediocre and overpriced food), lousy beer and wine selection. In a city of great venues, this is pretty bad, and couldn t survive in a less touristy part of town. The opening act was Lance Lopez and his band, who hail from my home town of Dallas. Lance played an impressive amount of notes in a short amount of time. I wish he had been as concerned about playing the music as much as he was about playing the guitar, though. And Johnny Winter can to both, and he did it wonderfully. It was a pleasure to see him sounding so good at 70. His voice, never his strong suit, was a little rough but always effective. So glad to see him so happy and in such good form- not like the \u201870 s, but a real treat. But maybe he should think about relocating his NYC shows- I d prefer somewhere a little more funky, but City Winery seems like a natural fit.

This band is a really good band, no doubt. However, the sound production and level on Friday night clouded Johnny's voice way too much and that made it difficult to hear him sing. I go to all sorts of blues concerts to see the masters at work and this time out was a little disappointing. On virtually all of Johnny's studio recordings his voice is front and center, the sound boys buried him in the noise Friday. I understand a youthful audience and the volume they appreciate but the mixing crew missed the mark this night. Johnny lost his way on at the end of "Don't Take Advantage Of Me" transmorphed into the end of "Johnny B. Goode". Not that it was especially noticed by the audience (or maybe it was) but again, a flub that caught the bass and lead players a bit off guard. Being the professionals they are, they easily covered it though. Still a worthwhile show if only to see Johnny play. Too bad I couldn't hear him sing. Know your audience, sound guys.

Scheduled for 7:00, the doors didn't open till 7:40 and the opening act didn't start until about 8:45. Fairly small turnout so the balcony wasn't open. The main floor has very little seating which this mostly older audience sure could have used. The opening act, Scotty Bratcher was far better than Johnny Winter. The mix was bad, sound too loud and distorted. His just average back-up band mostly drowned out Johnny's playing and singing.

I have seen Johnny Winter 8 times over the past 40+ years, but now it is time for him to hang up his guitar. Age and health have unfortunately caught up with him. His voice is weak and couldn't be heard at all. Once one of the best guitar players on the planet; he now suffers in that regard immensely.; very sloppy playing, etc. I felt ripped off with this concert. Many people left part way through the show. ... AND THIS COMES FROM A TRUE FAN.

Johnny Winter is one of the best guitarists and I'm such a big fan and have been for many years. I've seen him through his many changes, good and bad. He can still play like a pro and may need help to the stage but not with the guitar! The Bears Den is a fantastic place to see a show. The only criticism I have with this show is that they really needed to turn the microphone up on Johnny. You could barely hear his vocals over the music. Some people in the audience we even yelling to turn his mic up. It was obvious the sound need corrected. We still want to hear him sing! Also the show was barely 1 1/2 hours. I drove 2 1/2 hours just to see him!

First time I've seen Johnny Winter since 1969. Doesn't look much different but you can tell we are both 70 years old. He played lots of the old hits like he did with Johnny Winter And. The slick riffs are gone as well as the yelling but the backup band is excellent and it is Johnny Winter after all. He played a travel guitar for most of the set but switched to a full size playing slide for the last numbers. When playing the slide he was close to what we remember from the old days. It was great to see him still playing. Would I go see him again? Damn right, it is Johnny Winter after all.

I was so excited to finally get to see Johnny Winter and what a disappointment it was. Not so much from Mr. Winter but from whomever was handling the sound. The Birchmere of course has great acoustics and its a small venue. You would think that he was playing in Webley Arena in London as loud as the band was. Not Johnny, but the band. It was almost like I paid to hear the drummer and bass player. Rhythm guitar was great. You could hear him in the background and he wasn't overpowering. Just right, but the other two were so loud that you couldn't hear Johnny sing or his guitar most of the time. I noticed that when the drummer was tuning up he kept telling the sound man to raise the volume up on his drums. He didn't need to do that. Wouldn't go to see him again.

Johnny Winter and his band delivered a high energy set of blues and rock that showed his well earned fame as an iconic music figure. With the support and commitment of his band and entourage Johnny Winter is stronger than he was in a very long time. Highly recommend. The opening act Baskery was a big surprise: three young sisters that showed creativity and a polished delivery that reflected the deepest feelings of country music. The banjo player, at moments, was like Jimi Hendrix playing a sliding banjo

Johnny Winter's performance was good. His set list was great and included: Johnny B. Good, Good Morning Little School Girl, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Got My Mojo Working, and Highway 61. Usually, the Birchmere's sound quality is great and well balanced. However, the sound quality for Johnny Winter's performance was marginal. Johnny's mic had almost no EQ and sounded very thin. Johnny's vocals were buried in the house mix and the second guitar player over powered Johnny's guitar through most of this performance. The Birchmere is a great venue. We enjoyed this performance. Baskery (opening act) was great. An energetic performance with great vocals! Note: I saw Johnny Winter at the Birchmere several years ago, and the sound was much better.

Very disappointed, Johnny's voice was really bad and his guitar playing was nothing like it was even 2 years ago when we saw him. Time to retire, really, it was embarrassing. Baskery was pretty good, Swedish chicks playing country-tinged sort of swing/rock? They probably played just long enough, 4 songs or so is about all you need.

I see Johnny every time he comes to DC. This year he seemed more feeble than the past few. He was moving slowly as he walked in. he still can play the guitar at a high level. Playlist included Johnny B Good, Good Morning Little School Girl, Got my Mojo Working, Jumping Jack Flash, Gimme shelter and of course finished with the slide guitar and Highway 61 Revisited. His voice seemed a little stronger than in the past, but his microphone was not loud enough to hear him very well. Paul Nelson played wonderfully in backup role-- I would like to see him do more. I never tire of hearing Johnny Winter and hope that his health permits him to continue to play. I will not miss him in DC as long as he tours

I eagerly went to see Johnny last night. I had seen him a few years ago when he couldn't walk unassisted. He did last night and the crowd gave him a standing ovation when he walked out. A guitar legend like he is deserves it. However, his performance has gone down. The band is great, but Johnny, himself, is missing guitar licks over and over, and he can't sing anymore. The band seemed to play louder as possible cover for Johnny. We go to many concerts and the bands are aging. We don't expect the vocals of youth, but we do expect a high level of music. If I heard the performance on the radio and didn't know who it was, I would turn it off in a few minutes. We left early. Only a few people did. As great as he was in the past, I won't go see him again.

As always a great performance by Johnny and the guys. Special guest played alongside, one being Debbie Davis, a legend in her own right. I especially loved the Jumping Jack Flash, and it appeared the band was enjoying paying it as much as I enjoyed hearing it. After the show and going back stage Scott was really excited about their adding others songs, and was excited when I commented on how clear his bass work came through. Johnny said he too enjoyed the diversion from their regular repertoire. So what can I say, it's always a pleasure to hear this legend preform..

Way too much bass couldn't even hear the vocals. Rick Derringer was pretty good. I had seen all of these bands (except Savoy Brown) in the 70's, Johnny, Edgar and RIck Derringer numerous times. Leslie West was almost said, after wheeling him out (one leg amputated) he voice was pretty shot. The best part was Rick Derringer and Edgar Winter both definitely still have it, although Johnny seriously needs to retire, was really really bad, we wound up leaving. It was a fun night though cause I got to spend it with my hubby as a "date night"

It seems that a lot of people have been commenting on Johnny's frail health and vocals; while he did sound a little frail his guitar playing was anything but. He still has his "Mojo Working" and just got better as the show went on. My only very small disappointment was he didn't do any slide work until the end of the show. But when he did it was AMAZING! We even got to meet him after the show when he graciously agreed to sign autographs in his RV. Class act all the way!

Whenever I heard the song 'Johnny Be good' I hoped that Johnny will be good and so he was, damn he was. He almost can't walk but he can still play the guitar and sing as good as like in the seventies, and this is all about. The place is so good, the food is fine so you got to run and hear JW as long as he keeps on going on BB king blues club.

All three bands were great. Hard to believe that Johnny Winter is 66 years old, he may have to sit to perform but his guitar still dances all over the place.

The show was great. Venue was very intimate but nice. ticket prices were very good. Johnny played for nearly two hours. He played almost all of the required songs and encored with a set of slide guitar classics. A great show very glad not to have missed it !

His advanced age and poor health did little to impede the performance of this great Blues Master. There was plenty of blues standards to appease hungry fans, all of whom seemed to be shouting an endless list of song name requests between songs. Favorites include Red House, Bony Maroni and of course closing on Highway 61. Unlike most shows I've seen at BBKings, there was an opening band and Johnny Played a full set on top of that.

I saw Johnny when he brought Muddy Waters back to the masses in a 1977 show at the Palladium in NYC. The pure joy of Johnny and James Cotton and the pagentry of bringing out the great Muddy Waters was a revelation to me. Started playing the Blues and never looked back. I went to see Johnny 4 times on this last tour and two of the nights were a reminder that he was one of the true greats even at 70. True to the Blues really says it all. I can't wait for the new release September 2 or the memorial concert and documentary screening October 10. Johnny Winter will live on in everyone he touched with those Texas Blues he ripped like nobody else.

I had not missed a Johnny Winter since I first saw him, at the San Diego Sports Arena, a very large venue, that he headlined in 1976. I last saw him this April in Beverly Hills, to which I remarked to my wife "...he really looks in better health, than in the last several years..." We went to the Rock N' Blues Fest, in Anaheim last Friday, which was billed as the Johnny Winter tribute Fest. i will really miss this guy...even at his worst...he was a Gift From God

Well, This isn`t exactly a review as it is a possible explanation for a lot of the recent Bad Reviews of Johnny Winter`s shows. I see some terrible reviews of the 6-20-14 show in the Dakota`s. As most people know Johnny has been very Ill recently so much so that it caught up to him. Johnny Passed away on 7-16-2014 not too very long after that show in the Dakota`s everyone felt was sub-standard. I`m willing to believe it was as well but there was a reason for it...his ill health. I was privileged to have seen Johnny at his very best and wish everyone remember him that way and possibly give him a pass on several of the most recent shows when you felt you were being cheated. After all he did show up and make an effort not wanting to let you down he did the best he physically could under the circumstances. Please try to give Johnny a Pass...he truly is one of the Blues Legends. RIP Johnny 7-16-14

Johnny Winter is still a connection to the early blues (e.g., Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, etc...) and rock of the late 60s. He can still play and his band mates were topnotch, but the sound was too loud and muddled as they tried to cover his mistakes. I understand he's 70 years old and his voice isn't what it used to be and his fingers don't always hit clean notes; and I can live with that. Please turn down the volume, put Johnny front and center and let that rough voice and slide guitar be heard. Don't cover him up, let him shine like the gem he's always been. It's not the speed of his playing or the range of his voice that first caught our attention, it was the soul he put into his music. Play some slow blues filled with emotion, and whatever mistakes he makes will just add to the experience.

Yes, It was THAT BAD!!!! We have never heard such a MOSH of noise, is th only way I can think of to describe it. Could not stand it. Had to leave. It was the sound system mix or the musicians or their instruments, but the vocals were totally undecipherable as well. Could not understand a word. Expected MUCH better, as the show we saw at this facility just a couple of weeks earlier, the sound system was perfect. A storyteller, so the microphones for vocals and sound system had to be. Understood every word, music was perfect. So what went wrong? Either the BAND was that bad or somebody screwed up the sound system...THAT BAD !!! We are hippies and old rockers. Have NEVER walked out on a show before. EVER! Buyer beware. WE WANT OUR MONEY BACK! But we know that is not going to happen. And that is NOT why this review. This is real! It WAS THAT BAD.

We should of left when they had to help Johnny Winters on to the stage just so he could sit down. He didn't acknowledge the audience once, not even eye contact. The rest of the band was babysitting him throughout the concert, helping him with what song they were going to play and when to start and when to finish. We left early and were just depressed by the whole experience.

Johnny was celebrating his 70th birthday but many in the audience have been celebrating hJohnny for the last50! From the moment he appeared on stage to his encore set, we all knew that we were in the presence of a Rocn and Blues God. Meeting and chatting with him after in his tour bus was almost too much to handle. Awesome evening. In many ways both spiritual and entertaining.

The evening started out with local Blues regulars The Elwood Splinters Blues Band, who played some regular Blues standards. Things definitely picked up in pace when Eddie "The Chief" Clearwater took the stage in his signature fashion, sporting a bright blue Indian head dress and finely polished chops with which he battled the flat, unfriendly acoustics of the former retail store. When Mr. Winter emerged, it was with assistance and difficulty that he was seated center stage. The years have taken a heavy toll on most of Mr. Winter' body, but somehow, thankfully, his fingers have been spared and he can still tear it up!

Great to see Johnny and his band again. Great show and great opening act. Lenny Lopez another Texas bluesman ripped the blues with hints of SRV and ZZ Top. I think we'll be seeing more of this powerhouse in the future. Johnny's guitarist Paul Nelson played a great opener with the band and burned on several trade offs with Johnny throughout the night. Johnnys' voice was strong and he encored with some scorching slide on his Gibson Firebird. As usual his playing was great and that guitar always cuts through like a dream. Happy Birthday John Dawson glad to have you back in Atlantic City!!!!!!

Great well organized show. All the performers were in good shape and played well. Started promptly at 7:30 and 3 hours and 45 mins later Johnny Winter had completed his second encore Highway 61. Lots of fun. The only drawback was persistent sound balancing issues. Edgar Winter spent a portion of his set diverted by a low mic and a disconnected keyboard. Johnny Winters vocals were all but inaudible for the first song but took until the 3rd song to be acceptable. The bass so overwhelmed the majority of the set it was a shame.

Show was great! These phenoms did not disappoint . The house rocked and everyone was smiling! Heart warming to see Johnny Winter walk out on stage unassisted and actually play standing for his first and last songs! Long Live the Winter bros! Edgar is such a talented and diverse musician! Leslie West can make that guitar sing! Kim started the show off rocking and it never stopped. And dont forget Rick..he was full of magic. They each played many of their iconic clasics and the audience loved it. My complaint is with the sound set up, couldnt hear Johnny's voice at all and we all love to hear him wale the blues..too bad..but could certainly hear his guitar! PLUS...no teeshirts available except in SMALL????Whats up with that? Ridiculous planning for such a popular show..shame shame

more rock than blues but that was fine... all players appeared to be really into it and having fun. Definitely spilled over into the crowd. Great to see these legends. I'd go again next year. Hope next year the Bergan PAC figures out how to set the instrument levels better. C'mon it's 2012...why is the guitar and vocal too low ?

The performers were, as expected, good (although getting on in years, but we knew that). The venue - yiiii. The overall sound mix was poor, with the performers constantly motioning for adjustments during the show. Defective equipment required replacement during songs. Sometimes you could not hear the vocals, others you could not hear the lead. Recently I saw Yes at the same venue. The sound there was fine, but it was about 95 degrees in the balcony. I'll think twice before coming back. Too bad, because it's so convenient.

I have seen Kim Simmonds for 40+ years and he was at the top of his game. I was blown away by his playing. Leslie West is always very loud but this time it was intolerable. I would not include him in this lineup unless he turns it down. When I was in my teens great but we are all in our 60+ years and need a different volume. Rick Derringer is a great guitarist and entertainer. I have seen him many times since he was with Johnny Winter And, Edgar Winter is Brilliant and Johny Winter is always sensational. LESLIE WEST TURN DOWN YOUR MUSIC so we can hear your great guitar playing and great songs. When I see Mountain or varies lineups Mr. West uses he is magnificent. He is one of my favorites but sadly this time everything was so jumbled I couldn't recognize his songs even Mississippi Queen which is on my all time favorite rock songs.

Concert was great. Kim Simmons opened, played 20 min or so. Followed by Leslie West who topped his set off with Mississippi Queen. Rick Derringer had the audience singing. Edgar Winter brought the house down with frankinstein. Edgar was outstanding. Johnny came out and continued to the great experience. Played a encore and had all all the other stars jam with him for a few songs. concert started promptly at 7:30 pm and ended at 11. Great night, great music, great audience.

Absolutely the worst sound I have ever experienced, having seen hundreds of shows over the years. Bass & drums drowned out the vocals & most of the time the lead guitars. Probably the sound people & not the musicians or the venue. Wish I could get my $ back!!!

This was a hodgepodge of a show. For starters, let's go with the really good stuff. Leslie West is an amazing player with great courage. Kim Simmonds can still play and sing pretty well, but aside from Tell Mama, his set was forgettable. Rick Derringer is a caricature of himself, along with some bad facial surgery which makes his face look a little distorted. He does show his playing stuff toward the end of the set, but he makes it seem like he wrote hang on sloopy (he didn't) and that it's the new national anthem. Edgar Winter still has it, and he was pretty interesting, despite many electrical problems, indicative of a second rate crew. Johnny Winter should be placed in a home, never again to bore the shit out of us, never again to show us how his brilliance has deteriorated into several levels below mediocrity, never again to go thru what must be a terribly frustrating experience for him.

Great line up with Savoy Brown, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter, and Johnny Winter. A real treat for guitar fans. It was awesome when everyone joined Johnny for Jumping Jack Flash. Kim Simmonds started the night of with a rock'in instrumental and then went right into Louisiana Blues...killer player. Derringer put in a mixed set but satisfied in the end. The great Edgar Winter rocked the house and has more energy at 65 than most 6 year olds on a sugar rush. Johnny Winter does not have the flash he once had but he now lets his fingers do the talking and opened with Johnny B Goode and ended with rock'in slide version of Dust My Broom and HIghway 61.

Excellent line up. Kim Simmonds got it all going with some classic savoy brown hits. Rick Derringer was weakest but still rocked house with a couple hits. Edgar Winters energy was amazing as usual doing everything he could to please the crowd. Johnny's comeback continues with a new found authority leading the band instead of just playing along, not missing notes or going off tempo and even playing standing up for a few songs which I haven't seen in years. Really a thrill he's recapturing former greatness. Left feeling musically rejuvenated which is what a show like this can do when it's quality.
