Larry appeared in trio with a new (to me) bass and drum pair; two young guys who aquitted themselves admirably. Over all Larry's touch, tone and taste never wavered. His dialog with the crowd was relaxed and spontaneous. He opened solo with a couple of contemplative originals, then began a blues where he was joined by bass and then drums. Standards were mixed with originals and a version of Josie from Steely Dan's Aja, on which he'd played in '76. A crown pleaser. For his encore, he brought on a local kid; an excellent guitarist who had obviously been studying up on Larry's chops. A nice touch.

It was our first experience with the venue and we were impressed. Seating was comfortable, with room to cross one's legs and enjoy some space. Good accoustics and a friendly staff. The band was fantastic - Larry was at his finest, displaying his trademark virtuoso blend of rhythym and licks. The blues tunes were exceptional - he covers that branch of jazz as well as he does the more ecclectic, syncopated side he generally calls home. Son, Trevor, obviously inherited a great deal of talent from his father - talent displayed throuout the evening, but especially during a few solos encouraged by dad. Young buck drummer, (I believe Gene Coye) was a perfect third, providing a solid foundation from which Larry and son could traipse, pound or frolic on their strings at will.

Although Larry Carlton is 62 years of age, it seems he is nowhere near retirement. He looks as comfortable on the simple stage as a down pillow on a feather bed. His son Travis is no slouch on the bass, displaying a style of his own, receiving several proud looks from his famous father. An even younger drummer (unknown to me) performed beyond his years to complete the finely-tuned trio. Humility combined with experience spanning over 5 decades, Carlton played pieces as diverse as his audience. From a haunting version of "The Lord's Prayer" to the Steely Day standard "Josie", we were mesmerized for the entire 90 minutes of the concert. If the opportunity presents itself, don't miss the Larry Carlton Trio when they come to your area. He is truly a guitar legend & is sowing this vast experience into the next generation.

Much better than expected. Amazing. Travis, the bass player was a real surprise.I brought a 14 year old. He was the youngest one there, and as an aspiring guitar player, he really enjoyed it as well.

After 56 years of playing guitar (started when he was 6), Larry still plays with energy and passion. He covers many genres (jazz, blues, r&r...), making his performance even more interesting. The sidemen in his trio are also strong (especially the drummer), and Larry gives them ample opportunity to show their stuff.

Larry Carlton was superb last night at the Burnsville PAC. He played old favorites and some great new stuff too. It felt like He played for 15 minutes instead if the 90 minutes he did play. It was over too soon. What a great legend and artist!!!

The gig started with a tribute by Larry to Les Paul with a couple of stories and music to back it up. He then introduced his bass player and played a twosome before bringing out the drummer. These guys played two full sets with a mix of jazz, blues and rock numbers along with individual solos. Awesome play by all three musicians and well worth the price of admission!

A very warm summer evening in the Rose City provided the setting for a memorable performance by Larry Carlton. His years of session work and storied gigs with The Crusaders and Steely Dan behind him, he played with his son Travis on bass, and a fine young drummer, both of whom gave stellar backing to Carlton's sublime chording. Not the fiery soloist he once was, Carlton now navigates the fretboard with aplomb, delivering subtle warmth, varied colors and textures, and deft nuances on his instrument. At the soundcheck he explained how he came into possession of his current touring intrument, a 1968 Gibson ES335 that was gifted to him by a fan, and personably greeted and chatted with those of us fortunate enough to catch him in this very intimate setting. The show itself was filled with great music, masterful playing, and moments of amazement at the pure musicianship on display. Some highlights included a performance of the Steely Dan song Josie, a rousing bass solo by Travis Carlton, and at the end of the concert a powerful solo by Larry Carlton played with his fingers rather than his normal hybrid picking style. The audience showed its pleasure with a standing ovation.

I have seen Larry Carlton perform probably two dozen times since 1976. At that time I knew immediately that he was more than just virtuoso , I sensed his guitar mastery was due to an inner happiness that he completely trusted. .... as he did again and again, in so many performances in the years after. His well studied and instinctual ability to play guitar so alchemized several genres , that he became the most requested session man in recorded music. and became a crossover star and Grammy winner despite having been shot in the neck paralyzing his ability to speak or move his fingers and told he would never play again !\u2026 His passion to play and long term therapy ,trusting the Joy somehow brought him back to play better than ever! On this Sunday eve at age 69 with apparent injury related neurological tremors affecting both hands he Again demonstrated such transcendence seeming impossibly, he played flawlessly mastery ever better as in his beginnings! He left us smiling from the inner happiness he trusts . A genuine Icon an inspiration to music lovers and guitarists alike don't miss him !

Larry Carlton never disappoints an audience. His mostly electric set was really cool. He had a jazz pianist (Mark Evans - I believe is his name) who added tremendous depth and color to the music. I would never miss a Larry Carlton set - especially at BB Kings which is a great venue.

Larry Carleton who was a friend of BB King put forth his best effort playing at BB King's in NYC. Of course, BB King died this past year so it was an important event in terms of paying tribute to BB King who was a giant in the world of blues guitar. Funny thing about BB King was that he often was on jazz billings, and he very much loved jazz and especially Big Band - Frank Sinatra, etc. The spirit of BB King was Omni-present for me. It's notable the Larry Carleton can play BB King perfectly if he wants to do it, and his jazz style has much of BB King's blues technique in it, among other influences in his music (Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery). It was a great jazz set with jazz rock, also. Larry covered Josie (Steely Dan) and Minute by Minute (Michael MacDonald) for which he played as a studio musician.

Larry Carlton was at his very best for this event at BB Kings. This is a venue he obviously values tremendously as he told stories about having BB King arrive by limousine to his home in California to be on his Friends album in 1984. BB King is a friend of Larry Carlton so he was over the top for this great summer evening in Times Square. The jazz crowd is more subdued and cool than a rock or blues crowd. There's less roowdiness.

Larry Carlton's recordings, both solo and with Steely Dan and others, features many of the most musical guitar solos in the history of rock & jazz-fusion. IT's like he can craft memorable melodies on the spot, so the expectations were high. The concert displayed many of his tasteful licks and was a "need to see him" for Carlton fans. However, he seems to have lost a bit of the fire that made him the best studio guitarist in the world. Solos included more common licks you could hear from other guitarists. His band was pretty cool and very solid funk groovers, but rather young and not necessarily as mind-blowing as you mind get from say a Terry Trotter on keys or Abe Laboriel on bass. Total play time was 90 minutes, with a short version of Room 335 as the encore. I really like BB Kings NYC as a venue - one of the last "large clubs" with classy acts, good food and decent prices given it's in the heart of Times Square.

The Bears Den at Niagra Casino is an intimate venue with great acoustics. Larry opened the show with a few solo guitar pieces that illustrated his command of the instrument and tastefully restrained playing. He followed by playing along to a track from his Philly album which got the crowd into it. When the rest of the trio joined him on stage, with his son on bass, things really started to heat up. Music is all about communicating, and these guys can really do some talking. Incredible ensemble playing infused with dynamics and mind blowing solos. Larry's tone and phrasing are to die for, and he delivered a memorable performance that confirmed why he should be on every guitarists list of required listening.

Larry Carlton was fanatastic... it was a simple set up... The trio... Larry, his son Travis, and drummer Gene Coye... it was a surprising start... Larry coming out & playing solo for the first three tunes... experimenting on the third by playing along with a backing track from his Philadelphia Project... it all worked... He is an amazing artist... his sound & tone were just perfect!!... He chatted with the audience & seemed to be having a great time, enjoying it all with Travis... The show was a bit short... but I never realized that til I checked the time in the parking lot... it was just great start to finish... It's the first time I've seen him live...but can't wait to see him again!! I certainly hope he returns soon!!

I was a bit apprehensive about seeing Larry in a trio, but I shouldn't have been. This is the 6th or 7th time I have seen him over the years and this experience was completely different. I think this is largely a result of the trio format. Larry did not disappoint, there was plenty of energy and enough hits to satisfy everyone and some cool new stuff too. His son is an extremely talented bassist, and the drummer was fine. Mr. 335 was his usual amazing self. Don't miss this one!

There's a reason why LC was of the most sought-after session guitarists of all time--NOBODY has a bigger musical vocabulary from which to draw from. This translates into inspired live performances as well. Other than the late, great Joe Pass, I can't think of another guitarist as capable at chordal improvising. Sure, Larry doesn't single-note burn like he used to and I, for one, do not care! The tone, the taste, and the heart and soul are as evident as ever, and he's still not afraid to TRULY improvise--not just simply rehash variations of the same solos. The band--Larry's son Travis on bass and Gene Coye on drums--hold their own with the veteran guitarslinger, and Travis's growth as a soloist is amazing since I last heard him 2 years ago. Also, Larry in a 3-piece setting is a thing to behold. He's definately kept on his toes, which is a major bonus for the audience. Larry still tours A LOT, so there are lots of opportunity to see him perform. So, go see this warm, talented artist before he retires to the Tennessee countryside, which, at the rate he's going, doesn't seem likely in the foreseeable future.

I've followed Larry since the late 70's and had a chance to see him in the early 90's in a small club. Larry is an excellent musician. As a guitar player myself, I enjoyed and obsorbed all aspects of his performance, from his technique down to his gear. Though I am familiar with his music, I didn't recognize much of it because his set list was comprised of a lot of new music. Larry apologised for that, but it really didn't matter. Seeing excellent musicians for a nice night out is what the evening was all about. And the venue... don't get me started. I lived in Burnsville for 7 years and never knew the PAC was there. I realize it is new, but nice work! I'll keep an eye out for more shows there, an hopefullly Larry will come back.
