London Grammar

London Grammar

The grand British musical tradition of trip hop, popularized in the ‘90s by acts like Portishead and Tricky, is alive and well in 2013 with the success of trip hop trio London Grammar. Just a few months after being featured on Disclosure’s No. 1 album Settle, London Grammar released their debut full length If You Wait in September 2013 to critical acclaim and a No. 2 spot on the UK Albums Chart.

Stunning performance, beautiful sound, sweet personalities. Although not a real "active" performance, it fit their musical style. Worth seeing. And their opener Until the Ribbon Breaks was fantastic.

On a rainy night in Northern California, one of Britain's best new acts landed in Oakland Calif and delivered a solid performance at The Fox Theater, this was their last show of their current tour, and I flew in from Arizona to see them. The trio of "20-somethings" are poised, quietly confident and resonated and harmonized oh so well together. The trio is led by Hannah Reid, a beautiful, focused, mature soprano. Blessed with a sultry voice and wonderful stage presence, Hannah and her crew did not disappoint. On Hannah's right was guitarist Dan Rothman, with a winning smile and perfect rhythm synchronizing his skill set well. On Hannah's left -Dot Major gifted keyboardist, (Hannah plays keyboard too) guitarist, and percussionist, quiet and focused displayed his craft perfectly. The band's sound is deep, expansive, and soulful. Hannah's plaintive singing voice is mesmerizing. The 3 are all mature beyond their years, and all have great hair. Most importantly, they are humble and polite, and their music is so substantive that they will around for a long time. The best songs were Hey Now, Metal and Dust, Interlude and Strong. London Grammar is band whose songs sound great on record, but even better live, which is rare. I'm so glad I went. Thanks guys, David B. Schroeder Tempe, Az

London Grammar is seriously so underrated. The show was flawless with Hannah's ethereal vocals, Dot's skilled keyboard and drumming, and Dan's beautiful guitar playing. It was the perfect blend of talents. My friends and I even got to meet the band after the show and they were so sweet and talkative to us lowly commoners.

Great show, raw and young. Hannah has an extremely powerful voice. Likable and multi talented. Love the upbeat tempo of bongos in between vocals.

Sound acoustics allowed for an excellent appreciation for Hannah's gorgeous voice, which is perfectly complemented by the instruments and London Grammar's overall sound. Though the performance started a bit stiff (the young trio appearing slightly uncomfortable and possibly nervous in front of the crowd), they warmed up to the fans who were obviously familiar with their music. Scanning the crowd in the front at one point, I noticed those pressed up against the barrier between the floor and the stage looking up at Hannah with glazed eyes of adoration. And why not? Few groups deliver music this fabulous so early in their careers. Polished, but still interesting balance of instruments and voice, along with compelling lyrics. If you can catch them live during their American tour, do it. highasakite: Norwegian band supported--unusual sound, weakened by repetitive, simplistic lyrics and equally repetitive song structure that started soft, grew to a noisy mash of instruments and voices crescendo (though lyrics were unintelligible by then as drums dominated), and died back to soft sound for finish. Group's sound has potential, but lacks the complexity necessary to interest this music lover.

The band sounded great, they were tight and played all the favs plus some of the new material. My only criticism is that they barely performed for an hour. There were more songs from their debut LP that they could have played to bring the set up to something closer to 1.5 hours.

The college thing played well for a while, but Hannah's voice has outgrown it. The idea that you would run subwoofers to distortion, especially in an indoor theater type venue, and the pathetic lighting that had Hannah singing in the dark, reveals that the band does not know how to move forward. An agent needs to get ahold of them, probably add some instruments, and move them forward. Hannah has one of the all time great voices, she's beautiful, and the world deserves to hear her, but they never will so long as they have no vision to go to a new place in their presentation. Hannah needs to dress as elegantly as her music, let go of the mic stand, and speak to her audience thru her vocals with the same feeling and passion she had when writing these very emotional songs. We would not attend another London Grammar concert unless there were some evidence they have grown to the next, very necessary level. That said, we will always listen to every song Hannah writes.

This was a concert event that did not rely on anything beyond the strength of the music. Hannah Reid sounds equally impressive live, as on her recorded LP. I cannot wait to hear more from this group - they have been on repeat on my ipod for nearly a year. I am addicted!

Great performances by both bands. Wished the transition from both sets could have been shorter.. Also wished the cocktail server could have taken empty beer cups so I wouldn't have to go to the garbage that was no where near the stage. Overall I love the fox theatre!

London Grammar was brilliant at the Fox Theater in Oakland. Hannah's voice is both powerful and angelic, at once delicately touching your heart (Interlude) and then letting your spirit soar with Hey Now and Strong. I really believe that they are realizing that they can play even more rock music as a backdrop to Hannah's voice, and their diversity will be unstoppable.

Hannah, Dot, and Dan are amazing artists. Hannah's voice is as powerful as you imagine from their album, if not more so in a live performance. The VJ also coordinated extremely well to each of their songs and added much more to their already great set. One additional note is that between songs, each of the band members had an opportunity to speak and address the crowd so it is apparent the band works extremely well together and that no one hogs the limelight. This quality shows through their music. The only drawback was the brevity of the show, but they do just have one album so it makes sense. I can't wait 'til they release another album and tour again!

I've seen London Grammar having better evenings. Sound was pretty bad up back and it the band's gear also seemed to mess around with them. You could see it was the last gig in the tour, the band seemed tired. But usually, they are amazing, so they probably just had a bad day.

This show was originally scheduled for November, but was postponed until February. DEFINITELY worth the wait. This venue is small and intimate. London Grammar definitely thrived in this setting! They seemed very comfortable and genuinely enjoyed performing this night. The only negative reviews I have read about a London grammar concert is when the venue is rather large. The more they tour i'm sure it will no longer be an issue. Had a fun time!!

This was a great Concert!!! London Grammar is really good live! Their music is very powerful and Hannah puts everything she has in her music!! She has such an amazing voice! And the opening act JAC was really good too! I guess London Grammer's main opening band got stuck in Chicago and couldn't make it so Jason and his band(Local Band) filled in! I really liked them a lot!

I love London Grammar. They've obviously put a lot of work into their live show, and it shows. Hannah's voice is beautiful alone, but it's even more captivating with the support of two talented, young musicians. I wish them nothing but continued success and support in America and beyond. Plus, they just seem like genuine humans, like they would be fun to hang out with.

The venue was a really nice size, even the nose bleed is a good seat. Hannah rocked vocals so hard is blew my expectations out of the water! Honestly my friends and I agreed our expectations were that it wasn't going to be as good as the album because recreation of such incredible vocals was almost impossible. Wrong, apparently this true talent of a woman can sing spot on to the album and then some live!

London Grammar has an amazing lead singer in Hannah Reid and an overall distinctive very cool, seductive and smooth sound. They are not to be missed. I did not arrive to the show to see the opening band, so I do not know how they were. I arrived at 9:30pm right before London Grammar came on, and they really only played like 6-7 songs and then 2 more for their encore. It was all over in about an hour. I felt like the show started and was over too fast, and I practically paid $5 for each song. I would've appreciated a longer show.

LG and opening band; Until the Ribbon Breaks were supposed to play in November of 2014 at Terminal 5, NYC. The show got rescheduled due to some scheduling conflicts (??!!) to January 27th, but then the Blizzard of 2015 hit NorthEast and the concert got postponed to the following night. After the long wait I ended up seeing them and I was slightly disappointed. LG were backed up by a string quartet that seemed mostly bored and out of place at times and the song arrangements could have made better use of them. Hannah Reid voice is angelic but her performance was not one of her best, perhaps over touring takes it toll. Plus her stage presence is a bit aloof and awkward. The band in whole should make the show more lively and must get the audience involved. The concert was sold out, but people were expecting more. A longer set would have been nice.

This was my second time seeing LG, having first attended the small show they did in January at Baby's All Right. Having gained more confidence playing in America, the Irving Plaza show really delivered. Hannah seemed to have a bit of problem with a dry throat but really came through, and Dot and Dan asserted themselves throughout. Their music can be quiet and sedate, it's not the soundtrack to a wild night out, but it really worked in the club setting. My only problems are with Irving Plaza. As usual, they oversell so badly that about 50-75 people have to stand in the hallway because the floor is too crowded. And the nitwit who kept yelling, "I love you Hannah!" really needs to grow up and act like he's seen an attractive woman before. Stop embarrassing yourself, son.

London Grammar SOUNDS amazing. Her voice is almost better in person, if that is possible. However, they are not very entertaining (except for their musical ability) so I wish they played at venues where there is seating so that we could just kick back and enjoy their amazing sound. (Standing venues are a bad fit, for sure. Also, there were issues with the sound equipment and it looked like she got frustrated. Subsequently, the show was VERY SHORT! That was definitely a let down. I will see them again if they ever come back to town.
