Secondhand Serenade

Secondhand Serenade

Much like Five for Fighting or Dashboard Confessional, Secondhand Serenade is the project name for a solo artist, singer/songwriter John Vesely. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a musical family that included his professional jazz musician father, Vesely spent a number of years playing bass in local bands before picking up the acoustic guitar and refocusing his attention on composing original material. Rather than releasing the new material under his name, Vesely chose to group them under a different moniker, Secondhand Serenade, which paid reference to the notion that all his autobiographical songs were directed first and foremost to his wife (and thus made the rest of his audience bystanders to their pas de deux). Vesely recorded his debut album, Awake, in 2005, originally self-releasing the disc and selling it online through his MySpace page and iTunes.

An amazing performer. Love all their albums. He had the audience singing along. A great singer, lyricist...highly underrated.

I saw Secondhand Serenade at the Altar Bar in Pittsburgh, PA, which is a very small venue so all seats in the place were pretty much front row. They had Camera Can't Lie, Runner Runner and White Tie Affair open for them. Personally I thought Camera Can't Lie was the best of the openers and I would definitely watch them again live. But the best for sure was Secondhand Serenade! They came out and just rocked the whole show. John played a few solo guitar songs which were amazing. And they came out for an encore playing a song from the new CD and ending with Fall For You. I would recommend seeing them in concert and I will for sure see them again :)

The show itself was great, there were some bands that were completely amazing, such as white tie affair, and runner runner, I think that the opening band Go radio was even better than second hand seranade. secondhand serande's music was great but the performance was not . I thought all the other bands made sure to interact with the crowed while John didn't.

First of all, the venue is the most comfortable I've been to. Prop to the House of Blues, for good air conditioning, decent acoustics, and FREE water. The crowd was pleasant, and there was virtually no pushing. My friends and I started 5 people back, and ended up able to touch the barricade (well, security bar) by the time Secondhand came on. The only problem with the concert was that it was on a school night. SS didn't come on 'till eleven, and the crowd was flat out mellow. This was my first soft-rock concert (More of a Green Day fan), and while enjoyable, it wasn't the most life-affirming thing in my life. I felt honestly felt bad for the band. At first they were rocking hard, with John easily talking with the audience. But about half-way through (I bet alot of people had to leave by then--curfew) there was a steady buzz coming from the balcony and bar area. This pissed me off, I can only imagine how the band felt. Oh, and to the two girls (about 13 years old) standing behind us who arrived with their mothers right before SS. If you're gonna be in the GA, Shut Up! The worst part was the Encore. Noone was screaming. I've had a cold all week, but I had a freakin' stroke standing there. I've now strained my vocal chords and can't speak because I screamed so loudly. But the cheers went on for all of 2 seconds. I think the problem was that the tix were too cheap. We got in for 12 bucks. If they raised the price to 20 or so, it would somewhat filter the crowd to people who actually want to see the band. However, the band is great, and Vesely sound the same live as he does on his albums. Its worth going, just shut up and listen to his music. Its acoustic rock, so you actually need to listen to appreciate it.

Three amazing opening bands kick started the best concert ever! The sound was actually incredible. Not the usual bad speakers and inaudible vocals. We were able to hear every word loud and clear. Second hand picked the perfect setlist and was very talkative and socialble with the crowd. You must see this show!!!

Yeah, so they played about 10-12 songs. Had a three song encore which was great. He kept saying how he loved coming to Dallas and the fans didn't even constantly cheer to get him back out for the encore. Frankly, I felt bad for the band. The keyboarder had to come out and basically tell everyone that if they wanted an encore they had to cheer. The crowd was pathetic but the band was awesome. Less than impressive fans that i felt embarrassed to be a part of. I was cheering with my two friends for the encore (and we were the only ones). definitely recommended.!

I enjoyed the music from Rust and Parachute and from Secondhand Serenade. Evan Taubenfeld was terrible. The concert was too long and the main act did not start until 10:30pm. I enjoyed it , but will not see it again.

Sunshine Theatre was a great place to see Secondhand Serenade and the other acts, in order to get up close and personal. We were able to stand only feet away in the crowd, and get close to all of the acts after the show. The acts were all great, with Evan Taubenfeld playing an acoustic version of his show, after his band had been left behind on a broken down bus, and unable to attend. I would recommend this tour to young and old alike -- I went with my 18 year old daughter for her birthday, and had a great time!

The concert was opened by The Rust and Evan Taubenfeld. I thought that Secondhand Serenade played a nice set, but Parachute stole the show. Parachute's performance was amazing, but their set was way too short for being the most well-known out of the three opening acts. John played a good combination of old and new Secondhand songs. It was nice that he played three songs for the encore. He could have have more crowd interaction, but other than that, great show!

The Rust was alright. Evan whatever-his-name-is is so amazingly cocky, I wanted to push him off the stage. His music wasn't too bad, though. Parachute was the best part of the show. They were energetic and fun. Secondhand Serenade was so boring. He honestly doesn't even need a full band. I would not see Secondhand Serenade again.

Going to this concert to see Secondhand Serenade you're probably going to be disappointed. our semi-great bands opened for 2 hours and the SS came out for a very short set. He was good but not great, seemingly disappointed by a less than full house.

Four great bands for an awesome price & a small venue. We had a great time! I have been a huge fan of Secondhand Serenade for a long time, but it felt like the energy actually deflated when they came on the stage. I was so excited for the chance at a meet & greet, but John was so impersonable, actually rolling his eyes at fans & texting. No small talk, even to just look them in the eye & smile when they were telling him how wonderful they thought he was. He definitely gave the vibe that he just wanted to get it over with. Too bad, I think my whole group (6 of us) are bigger Runner Runner & The White Tie Affair fans now! They took pictures, gave autographs & gave awesome, energetic shows. Great job guys, don't forget your fans like John has! He just lost us...

The sound system at this event was terrible and whoever was running the sound boards did not know what they were doing. One act would be too quiet, the other too loud, too much drums, no vocals, etc. The harmonies of Secondhad Serenade could not even be heard for most of their set list. Somewhat disappointing. Small showing of fans was also a disappointment. Best group of the night was White Tie Affair, they also seemed to get the loudest reaction before and after their songs. I was very impressed by them.

All the bands were well prepared and got setup on stage in a reasonable amount of time. I knew all the bands and some of each of their songs before going to the concert, which made it even more fun! The band members were very friendly and interacted with the crowd as if we were all long time friends! My only complaint was that the crowd didn't get as involved as they could have, which would have made the experience better! I can't believe it, this is my first time going to a live concert. I was so psyched when it was almost time for Secondhand Serenade to come up on stage. The first band that played was Go Radio, their songs were so loud that I almost became deaf. But they started out pretty good. I had to wait 3 hours until Secondhand Serenade go on stage. But it was worth it, even though the pictures i took weren't so great. At least I saw John Vesely(aka SHS) perform lively and I was standing on the 3rd row. Wow it was an amazing night. I wished I could've stayed until 6am to hang out lol =P

Secondhand Serenade shows great vulnerability and and strength in their music. The live show did not not disappoint. The lead singer is so strong, lyrics are unique, emotion is raw, and the entire package is entirely believable. I cannot say the same for 2 of the 3 opening acts. How this lineup got put together, I have no idea. The first opening band, Go Radio, was pretty enjoyable. But Runner Runner and White Tie Affair were pretty terrible. Those two bands showed none of the qualities I love about Secondhand Serenade and I had trouble understanding why someone thought a Secondhand Serenade fan would enjoy them. It was an uneven night, but one that started well and ended wonderfully.

I have to say that this was the first time both seeing Secondhand Serenade and being at the Cameleon Club in Lancaster. The venue was small and cozy and made for GREAT viewing.. The venue was comfortable, although it was a full house. The show began on schedule, and it was amazing from the first set throughout. Go Radio was spot-on, the emotion in their songs shone through and it got the crowd moving. After their set, the band stuck around the merch area, and signed for fans. They were laid back and really just hung out with their fans. We grabbed a couple of pictures, and spent a good 30 minutes just chatting with them. The rest of the show was just as great. RunnerRunner really put on a great show, and so did The White Tie Affair. Their interaction with the crowd really got us pumped, they really put on an amazing show. To top it all off, Secondhand Serenade delivered a huge set, giving the fans a taste of their new songs, as well as some fans favorite from their previous albums. In the end, the show was beyond worth it. One of the best nights of my life.

I was a little weary at first of the opening acts, thinking that I would be bored sitting through an hour and a half of music that I'd never heard before. But when The Rust took the stage - oh my god! I could NOT stop smiling! The energy and passion they put into their set - WOW! I have not seen a band perform as well as they did in a long, long time. Check out the Rust of you haven't yet! Next was Evan Taubenfeld. He had a great voice but not the band to back him up. The guitars were too loud and just sounded like noise. Give him an acoustic guitar and he would have been a lot better. Then Monty Are I came on, a local band fro Providence, RI. Great set! Lots of energy, and the singer had the crowd wrapped around his finger. Will definitely be seeing them in Providence in a couple of weeks! Finally Secondhand Serenade came on. The crowd was AMPED UP. What a great voice and such an amazing band to support it. They played for over an hour and the crowd loved every second! After every couple of songs he made sure we were having a good time. Overall, a FANTASTIC show. Haven't been to a show that good in ages. Will definitely be checking up to see if all of these bands will be coming back to the area any time soon. Even if you can't make it out to a show, definitely check these bands out - you won't regret it!

This show was absolutely amazing beyond belief. I really came to the show for Secondhand Serenade because I fell in love with his music the first time he came to New Orleans with Yellowcard, The Spill Canvas, and Treaty of Paris. His opening performances for this headlining tour made this concert even more exciting than the last show. The rust was very enthusiastic in their performance. Evan Taubenfeld was the most entertaining performer of the night. He really knew how to get the crowd going and was also funny while doing so. Parachute performed well also. The supporting bands, in my opinion, were better and brought more to the stage than Secondhand Serenade did. John played with his back to the crowd most of the time and it was really mellow. Overall, it was a good set but the other bands definitely were more exciting than Secondhand Serenade. The Rust was really interesting. Evan Taubenfield was super charismatic and amazing stage presence. He really got the crowd going. Parachute just brought the excitement that night. The Rust opened the show and really got everyone started with a great set! Even Taubenfeld was so fun and a total sweetheart giving out kisses for merchandise purchases, my daughter got her iPhone autographed, what a great personality! Parachute has an awesome fanbase, we were next to a group in the crown that as I do knew all the lyrics, and was rather loud about singing along bringing such a great vibe showing Parachute how loved they are. Will Anderson turned at the last second to give peace to my camera after the show awaiting the meeting of fans (see photo below) their performance was as stellar as when I saw them on 8/5/09 at the El Rey opening for The Script! What a great twist on all my favorite songs by John Vesley of Secondhand Serenade, he was incredible and loved loved loved the new songs I'll be first in line to buy his new CD when it's released! Years ago I was disappointed when Counting Crows did the same thing and when I asked Adam Duritz, it was a small venue early in their career and he was standing in the back of the venue in the parking lot, he said, "sometimes I just feel like it." I understood it then as I do now but tell us, please. Sometimes we want it just the way it's played on the radio. Still, Secondhand Serenade is awesome and songs from their new album are fantastic.

This was one of the best concerts I have been to. I loved the atmosphere of the Bowery, and the relaxed environment throughout the night. It was great to relax with a few drinks me listen to your favorite artist. I especially liked the opening acts for secondhand serenade, they were extremely talented! Secondhand serenade was unbelievable and I will always remember what a great concert this was!

John is absolutely AMAZING!!! He really made it a memorable experience. He's so down to earth and sincere. He stayed after the show and took pics and signed autographs until every last one of us had our time with him..

What can I say? Venue is perfect, the acts were awesome. Secondhand Seranade, John played some songs with Veronica Ballestrini, also awesome. Very intimate with some tables on the balcony. They stayed after for pictures. Loved it.

REal nice "intimate" feel to the show. Just him and his acoustic guitar or piano. He was talking to the fans and you could talk back to him. Good personality made it a memorable show. Sound was great and his voice was right on! Played a lot of old good songs and some new ones were nice too. One of my favorite shows.

Entire show was acoustic. His voice was great live. Wish he would've played longer but I guess you get a short concert with $30. It wasn't like other concerets I've been to with crazy lights, and smog and big screens on the stage. Met fans for a signing after the show while texting in between autographs.

The concert was good. The music was too loud, made my head hurt Dont get me wrong, Loud music is good. But the instruments was louder then Johns voice and his voice is the main part. So yeah, Next time make sure the mic is the key part. You guys still rock.

all the bands amused me... i loved them all.. specially Secondhand serenade... the thing i didn't like at all was that the singer of secondhand serenade said to all his fans that we would be out there hanging out with us.. I had a lot of hopes i could see him but after 45min waiting he never showed up.. :' ( I came all my way from venezuela just to see him and his group performing.. i'm leaving fort lauderdale disappointed... he could just have been honest with his fans...

It was the first time I got to see Secondhand Serenade and it was all I hoped it would be :) The Rust and Even Taubenfeld were great openers. I had never heard of Evan before the show, but would deffinitely go see him again. Secondhand Serenade sounds just as good live as they do on the album.... maybe even better ;) I had a great time!

The first time I saw Secondhand Serenade was at the House of Blues in Anaheim. It was a one-man acoustic show and his passion and powerful lyrics got to me. It's hard to compare this show, as he was headlining with a band, and the Showbox SoDo was in it's more intimate arrangement. But having Evan Taubenfield open was a flash-back that made me smile. Usually I'd be seeing gigs like this at El Corazon or Chop Suey, so it's nice to see the artists upscaling to the likes of the Showbox and the venues expanding their audiences. Watching acoustic songwriters transition from carrying a show to performing in front of a band isn't always the easiest. They can over-reach and end up sounding formulaic and repetitive. Take Matt Nathanson for example. I'd quit a job, lie to my mom, stand-up a date with Mrs. Draper, or mug an old lady for tickets just to watch him play a 5 song solo set. But tell me he's headlining his band again and I'll have to check the calendar to see if there aren't any good movies playing first. The difference is that significant. All in, the bands were engaging and lively, while the crowd was festive and typical for Seattle. I'll definitely head back to SoDo whenever it's in small setting though, because that was well done.

Great show! got to see four different bands. ALL sounded great live. would def go see them again! only downfall was size of venue, after every band they had to stop and tear down/set up. other than that, wonderful!

Secondhand Serenade put on an amazing performance! Definitely worth the money. John Vesely sounded awesome and got the crowd feeling great with some new songs, his trademark "Fall for You," and his rendition of Coldplay's "Fix You". Altogether, fantastic show.

Overall a great show, venue was a little sketchy, but forgot all about it once the bands began to play. The Rust is unbelievable, the best opening band Ive ever heard. Love that they are so willing to get out there and mix with the fans. They're definately going to be huge. Evan Taubenfeld does a good job with crowd involvement, but his profanity is outta control & totally unnecessary. Parachute was amazing, you can tell they've been doing this for a long time & they love what they're doing. Great sound. SS did good, much better than a previous show I saw them at, which was boderline embarrasing.

The whole concert was amazing. I had no idea who the first two bands were, but they blew me out of my shoes. The Parachute was great, and Seconhand Serenade was excellent, and really funny.

I have never heard of The Rust, Parachute, and Evan Taubenfeld but they were amazing at the concert. I LOVED when the Rust did the whole, momentary pause thing. It was awesome! And secondhand serenade... What can I say. They just drove me insane! And their new songs they are waiting to release, were phenomenal! I also loved switching off between full band and acoustic every other song.

We arrived around 4:30pm to get in line for the 5pm doors opening. Once inside there was some seating and some standing space. We decided to sit up on the side where we weren't too close to the stage and speakers, but we had a good view of the bands. All the bands ended up being fun and we were impressed that even though the singer of Secondhand Serenade was sick, he was still very talented in the performance.

I was right in the front with my 3 friends and every single band was absolutely amazing. The Rust started out the show fantastically and Evan just kept the energy up. Parachute brought so much enthusiasm and then Secondhand Serenade just rocked! :D It was honestly the greatest night of my life. :) These guys are amazing and they're now my absolute favorite bands in the world. I want to see them all again! :D

I love secondhand serenade! But I didn't know any of the openers and was tired of being pushed around in the crowd so I ended up leaving before he even came on. But if you like the Concert crowd, go for it!

I am so disappointed in the Secondhand Serenade show. They played like 8 songs for about an hour and one was a Coldplay cover. I listen to that CD at least once a day and love every song, and only got to hear a few I knew. For the amount I paid, it wasn't worth it. It should have been a free show. Love the songs, but seriously, a little more effort could have been made..... :(

The Secondhand Serenade concert was BY FAR the best concert of my life. I knew that they were an amazing band going into the concert, but they just blew me away. Their music was equal to the CD version if not better, which I can't say about the majority of the artists I have seen. John Vesely was so polite and just great with the crowd. I had a great time and would recommend to ANYONE to see them in concert, I know I will.

this concert was amazing, i highly recommend seeing them in concert because they will preform a show you'll never forget. the opening bands kicked the show off with incredible preformances and songs, but secondhand serenade really knew how to end everything with an unforgettable experience.

Secondhand Serenade puts on a fantastic live show. He didn't sound anything like the CDs but it wasn't a bad thing. Going into this I was expecting the slow sad ballads that are on the albums but what I got was harder hitting rock versions of the songs. It was very interesting to see the difference but I enjoyed it. The only thing that kept me from giving this event 5 stars was the opening acts. They were The Rust, Evan Taubenfeld and Parachute. I enjoyed Evan and Parachute but 3 opening acts was just too much. The show started at 7:30 and Secondhand Serenade didn't go on until 10:15ish.

The concert overall was good. But for my guest and I parachute put on a much better show than secondhand serenade. Also - they did not really publicize that the show had started and when they opened the doors to the ballroom, so we missed the opening acts.

We saw Secondhand Serenade in the Newport Music Hall last night. The opening acts of The Rust and Evan Taubenfeld started things out right but then when Parachute and later Secondhand Serenade performed things just got even better. I had only heard one song of Parachute before the concert but I enjoyed them all (I bought their cd after the concert and had it signed by all band members and even got a picture with the band!). They played a Beatles cover (Get Back) so even my dad enjoyed them. Secondhand Serenade played for 90 minutes and didn't disappoint. He played many of his hits but also covered Fix You originally by Coldplay. I liked it as much as I like Coldplay's version.
