Morrissey

MORRISSEY IN CONCERT:Stop me if you think you've heard this one before: indie rock hero and consummate dandy Morrissey is back on tour, and fans can expect him to pull no punches as he continues his reign as music's favorite contrarian.  With his outspoken vegetarianism, erudite literary references, and floral self-flagellation, Morrissey became one of pop culture's most notorious and influential figures in the '80s as frontman of beloved alt-rock band the Smiths, and three decades later he's lost none of his piss and vinegar. Whether he's treating audiences to Smiths classics like "This Charming Man," opining on solo favorites like "The Last of the Famous International Playboys," or debuting cuts from 2014's World Peace Is None of Your Business, Morrissey is sure to dazzle with his legendary showmanship and politically-charged sets.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:British-born Steven Patrick Morrissey was an avid consumer of pop and punk from an early age, performing in several Manchester-based bands before forming the Smiths with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982.

First the venue was ok. 5k capacity so it was fine anywhere you are seated so viewing and hearing the act is fine anywhere. Though they stopped serving adult beverages an hour before the show ends. The restrooms are far walk from your seats, it's all the way in the main lobby of theatre. As for Morrissey, I've seen him over 10x and sad to say that this show was a bore for me. Way too many new songs that were'nt good and he twisted around his hits with Spanish lyrics which ruined it for me. He also twisted around some of the lyrics of his classics. He only played for an hour an a half and half of it was a dozier. I think I'm done with him unless he comes out with a really good album for his next show.

The only thing that could have made this night even more better was to have had Morrissey on the five big screens they had going on that night. The lights flashing behind him most the time would make it impossible to see a little speck that was Morrissey in a black suit. Really, Morrissey?

Oh, how we love Steven Patrick Morrissey! He possesses one of the most beautifully gifted voices in music, and this show did not disappoint. He always puts on a great show with his incredible voice and intriguing way. We can never stop watching him, as he is so unique and ever so talented. I will say, he is not for everyone, as he is committed in his beliefs, but if you can put that aside, he continues to grow on you, the more you are around him. He def has a loyal following and if you take the time to look deep down hard enough, you will understand why. Thanks, Morrissey, for truly being one of a kind in this bland world of music, don't ever change! Until next time...

Morrissey and his fan base have grown up and joined the real world, and the turn, it shake it bend it but most of all LOVE it. Morrissey was at his adult best, His voice and band were flawless his love for his fans was felt everywhere! The sound system or room sound was awful (no bass) but the band shined through any technical boundaries- Blessings- Dave

What a great show. Too bad stupid fans had to continuously climb on stage to get a hug (or whatever they were hoping for). Morrissey was understandably gracious, but more understandable is that he decided to cut the encore part of his performance to one song. Who is at fault? Oakland Paramount security? Morrissey personal security? Who knows, at least we got a little over an hour of great music and a tight band.

Well, what can I say? Cranky, moody, sarcastic- but he showed up! And let's face it, with MORRISSEY, we're lucky to get that. Didn't hit all the notes and only played for an hour, but he did sing some old Smith's songs and that was a treat. Highlight of the show for me was a delighful rendition of "Why don't you find out for yourself". Oh, and it's always hysterical to see his reaction to the fans jumping on stage to hug and paw him. Brave souls. Who would think that's a good idea???? This is not a man filled with Christmas cheer- if anything, he seems more depressed than ever. But it's Morrissey and he's divine. I got what I expected- all's right with the world...

Morrissey was great and his live band was truly amazing. I was a little disappointed that he didn't play "There is a Light...", but he made up for it with gems like "Ask", "Is it Really so Strange?", and "Cemetry Gates". The highlight for me was "How Soon is Now?". Even thought I've heard that song a million times, they really brought their A game to it last night. The drummer went insane, playing this massive bass drum *and* and gong. Great show!

The show that he did was good, however he was only on stage for 1 hour and 15 minutes, far too short for a concert. The opening act was really good and played for almost as long. I enjoyed what I saw but wished that he had done more. Overall I'm glad I went.

I have seen Morrissey solo and with the Smiths many times. Last nite's show was very good and showed a warming to the audience that Morrissey seems to be moving towards. The only disappointment was the security and stage jumping that caused what appeared a premature ending to the show. I also always want more smiths and classic Morrissey as well. Great venue and a very good night...Thank you Morrissey

Morrissey has quite a loyal fan base but I think that he did not perform as well as he has before, he sang for maybe an hour which substantially less time than others. Overall a nice show but not a spectacular show. I was not wowed and am unlikely to ever get tickets to see him again. I'll stick to the records.

The event was too short and too few of his better songs were played. It was hard to read the dynamic between himself and his band and that tension was uncomfortable. His voice was strong and well-defined, and his personal presence was very evident; however, at the end of the show I felt I had been slightly cheated. I don't attend the events of my celebrated "heroes" to be white-washed by their new stuff, that material is secondary to me, I attend for the nostalgia and sentiment of their more famous, stirring melodies. And those few "classics" that he played were lack-lustre and uncommitted. So, while I was somewhat captivated by the dynamics of the man, his music, and his histrionics, I was underwhelmed, overall.

SO very glad I went to this concert!! Morrissey was in damn-near perfect voice. He hasn't sounded this good in YEARS!! (This is my seventh Morrissey concert) And he looked VERY healthy. I was kinda concerned because of all of the shows he cancelled last year and earlier this year. Wonderful show and his musicians were GREAT! One guy played the guitar, keyboard, trumpet, accordion, AND didgeridoo! Another one of his guitarist played the soprano sax (I think)! VERY IMPRESSIVE! It was a super GREAT show!!

Jus want to say Morrissey sounded fantastic and the Grand Sierra Theater was a great venue. Even though it's next to the casino, there was no smoking and the size of the theater is small enough to still feel intimate. I also appreciated the PETA people being there; you can accept Morrissey's protection of animals or not, but PETA is a wonderful organization that gets the message out. Also, thank you to Ticketmaster; I have not been a fan of the organization in the past, but they were awesome in helping me last minute change my delivery method and I was thrilled to get to speak to a REAL human when I needed help an hour before the concert. Big Smile!!!

It was a good show. Morrissey had good energy for his age, but the audience did not. The audience's reactions and energy was very low and disappointing. The show was actually much better than when I saw him a decade ago in Orange County. Songs were mostly post-90s, with a few Smiths songs sprinkled throughout.

Morrissey as always delivers a stirring, passionate and intense performance. An acquired taste for some but a peerless lyrical genius to his fans Morrissey is unlike any other. His passion, unforgettable lyrics and dreamy delivery leave little room for doubt that Morrissey is still as advertised. Having not seen him for many years (I'd been living in China where he wasn't allowed to tour, or didn't want to) I was delighted to hear his voice in fine shape, especially near the end of a long US tour. His new album has some great tracks on it which held up well live, especially the title track and Bullfighter Dies (classic Moz). The old Smiths tracks sounded great although I must say the power of Suedehead and Every Day is like Sunday were highlights.

Got to the event about 3pm to be sure we got close to the stage..the people in line were pretty cool, I flew up from Los Angeles so we didn't really know anyone up in San Jose. Once inside it was a mad dash to the stage. No opening act just a long intro video collage of old video footage which was interesting at times and kinda boring at others. When Morrissey finally came on it was pure excitement! He opened with Suedehead..then before you knew it he was five songs deep into the set. He played for a long time it felt like. Closed with every day is like Sunday and just like that it was over. The show was fantastic, he put on a great show if was well worth the flight up and everything else the trip entailed.

Morrissey is a living musical icon and he lived up to this billing as expected. As a true fan of Morrissey's entire catalogue I was very pleased with the chosen set list as it spanned from Smith's songs (What She Said) to classics off of his latest (World Peace...). His views of police misconduct and animal rights were displayed via videos during Ganglord and Meat Is Murder. Although difficult to watch they were quite effective at displaying the misjustice in this world. So, overall this performance was nothing short of brilliant. I hope he continues to tour for many years to come as my presence is assured.

BLONDIE sounded excellent, Morissey was ok, but pretty much all his music sounded depressingly BORING, I tried to get into it, but we just couldn't take it anymore and left after his third song, I know everybody has different taste in music, but he was just awfull, it was nice that both singers were happy for equality in same sex marriage being passed , but it was the queen of the New Wave and her band that made the night. ..... Now I know why I never bought any of the Smiths albums back in 70s up to this date, and bought vinyl albums and CDs of such stars as Debbie Harry, Romantics, Adam Ant, New Order, Go-Gos, Culture Club, etc. (.....not to mention the brain of blondie; Chris Stein, and probably one of the BEST drummers in the world Clem Burke!

I guess I was guilty of a typical fan that wanted to hear more Smiths music. I think Morrissey tried, and failed to bring energy to the crowd. I would have loved to hear Redondo Beach. I felt the show was high energy at first, but then it was definitely a sit down show after awhile. If I had to do it over again, I would not have gone. His voice did sound great though. We heard him in Miami Beach back in 2005 or 2006 and he was amazing.

MorrisseyFanSince1994
I have been listening to Morrissey since I was born in 1994. My parents were fans of the Smiths and of Morrissey, and therefore introduced him and his music to me since birth. I have memories of singing along to his songs from Bona Drag on my way to Disney as a child. So when my family heard that he would be in town, we bought box seats to the show. The box seats were nice, except for the fact that seats in a row (100, 101, 102, 103, for example) were actualy not together. So my sister and I had to sit behind my parents, who sat in the front of the box. The seat I sat in was very tall, and as a 5'4" person, I had to resort to climbing up the chair in order to get on. This proved to be not only difficult, but humiliating. However, this did not spoil the show, it was only an inconvenience of the theater (Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver, CO). The show really went south as soon as the opening act began to play. They were awful, and as I have been a classically trained musician for 9 years as well as a staff writer for a popular music blog, I do not say that lighty. They were a bad mix between Siouxsie and The Banshees and Elvira, and sounded pretty much like screeching garbage. This began the demise of the entire show, and it's just the tip of the iceberg. After the opening act, there was a 10 minute intermission so that Morrissey's band could set up. They put on a projection of some interesting music videos throughout musical history, and that was pretty enjoyable. I am not sure whether that is apart of the theater's repertoire, or if Morissey provided that. But it was basically the only nice part of the show. Soon after the intermission Morrissey finally graced us with his presence, and I was very cheerful at this point, and so was my family. He of course started out with a new song from his recently released album. It was a short song (as were all his new ones it seemed) but not bad. Many of the songs he played in the beginning of the show were about world issues such as world peace. As someone who is in favor of activism, I appreciated these songs, although I knew there were not songs I would likely buy or listen to for fun. They would certainly work as background music for a viral activism video about war or something. However, after all that and a few of his old (and well loved) songs, he began to talk and sing about Peeta and veganism and animal rights. I am very much a supporter of animal welfare and the fair treatment of all animals, farm animals and wild ones alike, but I do happen to eat meat. At first the "veganism is the best" thing did unsettle me, but I am aware of Morrissey's views (recall the Smiths album, Meat is Murder) and I wasn't very offended. I have vegan friends, and I think it's a great lifestyle, just not one I could live. However, Morrissey then began to sing a seemingly endless song about how eating meat is murdering animals and how those who eat meat are pretty much murderers, and he had a projection with violent images of farm productions abusing animals and killing them violently. There was no Trigger Warning given, and so this just surprised myself and my family. I had to turn away for the whole song to avoid seeing graphic, violent images. My sister, who is 19, began to cry because of the violent and terrible nature of the images we saw. That kind of behavior at a concert on Morrissey's part is abomintable, and I was very vexed my that point. If someone is going to show violent, gory, BLOODY images to a crowd, there should be a warning given. No such warning was given, so I had to see pigs being gutted and chickens with deformed feet whilst trying to enjoy a concert. In the end, I found that Morrissey had become very preachy, and I didn't enjoy the show at all. I had to console my crying sister, and we left not long after that song. I'm sure if he had played that song and video earlier, the theater would have been empty for the rest of the show. Morrissey assaulted my ears and eyes with violence. I am not agains veganism, or the advocation of animals in any way, but I am against tactics that use violence to try and change someone's perespective. And I'm really against bad music. Morrissey has been ruined for me, and as long as he produces albums like the latest one, I will never purchase his music or attend his shows ever again. I almost wish he would apologize to my sister for making her cry.

I've seen Moz more than once in my life and this by far is the most memorable. Some of the renditions of his songs were absolutely beautiful and heart felt. HOWEVER.... the fans in the front provided a spectacle at the end. Moz was bum rushed and 'caused the show to be over by about one song. Usually I love that he ends his shows with 'How Soon is Now', but those punk-a$$ kids ruined it. OH well...

Hollywood HS was ill equipped to host a legend. Massive lines of disgruntled fans wrapped around three Hollywood blocks. We were delayed entrance due to a messy check-in process, the opening act annoyed most fans. 9:57pm, Morrissey FINALLY hit the stage. My wife and I were doubtful that we would get into the venue. It was a MIRACLE that we were actually inside the venue and seated. If you saw the size of the lines, you'd understand. During Meat is Murder; a very graphic video of cow and chicken slaughters played behind Morrissey. During Let Me Kiss You, he ripped off his shirt and chucked it to a man in the front row. Random fans and Julia Riley spoke too (boo!) Seeing Morrissey perform in a high school auditorium left us very nostalgic. Luckily, he still has the voice that we fell in love with in the 80s.

From the moment to the band walked onto the stage to the last chords of How Soon is Now as their encore, this show met every expectation and hope for this old Smiths fan. It was the first time for me to see the man. I was impressed with the interaction he had with the fans, making sure to shake hands, receive hugs. The set had an impressive mix of Smiths song, opening with Shoplifters...but be prepared for the Meat is Murder break with a very disturbing movie that played on the screen behind the band. The lights on the stage were blood red which made the horror more urgent. The band was perfect...and Morrissey's voice strained at times, but most of the show he was strong and if you closed your eyes you can imagine not only yourself but the show was taking place somewhere in 1984...

From the first time seeing Moz in 1991, and throughout his solo career, this has to be one of the top 3 shows I've seen him put on. From his set list, to the close up stage, Moz seemed to be in a good mood (which is a plus!). Regardless of the bad sound at VVCC, Moz put on a great show and actually brought back good memories from the 1991 show in San Diego. Overall, if you're a Smiths fan or a Moz fan, you need to go check him out. His concert aims to please ALL fans around.

Morrissey was in fine form on this night. Everyone stood and danced in their seats from the opening song until the very end.

Morrissey is a legend and I was so glad I was able to get tickets to see him. His voice is still wonderful and he remains very good looking. I'm not very familiar with some of his newer work, but what I've heard is very good. I'm not an uber-fan and I was disappointed as his song selections for the setlist because I didn't know most of the songs. The opening act was really strange. At first I hated it, but as she went on I realized I didn't hate her singing as much as I hated the fact that she had no backing band and only had a lame sounding keyboard. Something about her voice screams the need for amazing music to back her up. I hate to compare this relative unknown to a legend, but she kind of reminded me of Nina Hagen.

Awesome as always. Cemetery Gates was wonderful to hear. The band sounded incredible. Very rich and full bodied. Morrissey sounded amazing. He did a great job. The venue was rather chilly. Bathrooms definitely need remodeling. 5 stalls total and one wasn't working. No papertowels. Just that nasty rag.

What an amazing night! Morrissey gets better with age. His voice is still great and is in better physical shape than most men in their twenties. His band was outstanding. I wish the show was a tad longer but the energy more than made up for it. I hope one day he does a classics tour. The love people have for this man and his music was smoldering all evening. The sound was crisp and the view was great. Cannot wait for his next tour....

Its always great to see Morrissey but this show was a little unispired. The band was amazing and the show was ok, but his show at the Aragon Balllroom in Chicago last year was brilliant. He seemed a little off, this show, and played a very short set I thought. I would see him again but out of the 4 times I have seen Morrissey, this was by far the worst.

Excellent concert. Opening act, Doll & the Kicks, was the perfect complement to Morrissey. His act was lengthy, covered old favorites & many new songs as well. He dealt well with the stage-rushing morons, one of whom tackled him and seven of whom trampled over a security guard in the aisle. He took it all in stride, and did a perfect job of performing his beloved music. Gracious, sincere, and topical in his comments to the audience between songs, I think he made a real connection with those of us in attendance. For those of you who didn't get to see him, you have my condolences! You missed a wonderful show.

I've been to several of Morrissey's shows(not as many as some diehards) and when he's is in good spirits, he puts on an awesome show...chatting it up with the audience, lots of handshaking with the crowd. But heaven forbid if he has trouble with audio equip, the venue, stage security, or....he smells meat cooking on a BBQ!! He'll cut his set short and leave us bitter, bewildered and truly disappointed! Cheers -M-

After waiting 30+ years to see Morrissey (including 2 cancelled shows), this was a GREAT performance! The theater was very nice - clean and small. I bet there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Bathrooms were huge too - no waiting (even for women).

He actually was walking around MSG before the concert, I did not know if he wanted to remain anonymous or was doing it to see if his fans would recognize him out of context. I stood there and stared at him and he actually locked eyes with me and I felt oddly embarrassed and turned away. I did not want to invade his personal space and had no interest in behaving like a groupie. I kicked myself all the next day because I am so grateful to him for lifting his voice for the animals and the highlight of his show was his singing about bull fighting as his film above the stage showed the unimaginable cruelty the bulls suffer. A snippet of the cruelty. I am so grateful to him for that more then anything else. His voice is as powerful as ever and so melodic and pure. I would have loved to say hello to him to thank him for bringing so much truth to the stage.

Huge Morrissey fan since The Smiths. Saw him in multiple other shows in the last four years when he visited NYC, like at Terminal 5 and at Kings Theatre. They were great, fun shows. Felt like he was just mailing it in. Not the same energy as years past. Also changing the lyrics around for your favorite songs, just annoying rather than fun. Unlikely to really want to see him again in concert and it's sad because he was one of my favorites to see live.

Another excellent show by Morrissey. Loved everything about it, especially the new songs. I listened to the new album over 30 times in prep for the show and it was worth it. The new album is the bomb. Every song is classic. The show itself was phenomenal. My only issue was the guy in front of me who was 6'2" and dancing all over the place, but I was still able to get some video and see Moz even though I stood the whole show. Been over 25 years since I first saw Moz and will continue to see him until I'm gone. Thank you, Morrissey, for all you've done to get me through difficult times. You're the best!!!

I'm a huge fan of the Smiths & was disappointed that he only played a handful of Smith tunes. I know he is pushing his new album this time around (but one can only hope). Really enjoyed the concert except for the few times it became political. If you're a Morrissey fan you need to see him live.

Morrissey still has an amazing voice but if you are going under the impression that you will be treated to classics from Morrissey / The Smiths with some new songs mixed in you will be disappointed. It felt less like a concert and more like a political protest. He performed "songs" about whatever social hot topic he valued that day while graphic images played on a screen over head. When we wasn't singing he was whining that his new record wont do well, not because of the content, but because the "man" is keeping him down. If this is your thing then go and enjoy the show. If you want to hear classic Morrissey or Smiths songs then this isn't the show for you.

My third time seeing Morrissey. He was amazing. Voice still pitch perfect. I preferred seeing him at The Pageant instead of the seated venue at the Peabody but he was just absolutely fantastic. The new album is very good. It was my 22 year-old daughter s first time seeing Moz, and as she grew up singing The Smith s and Morrissey since about the age of 2 she really enjoyed it but really wanted to hear a few more of the older hits. Maybe next tour! Don t miss this one, it is worth every penny!

This is the 3rd time seeing Morrissey, and unfortunately it was a disappointment. In short, he had become so vain that he directed the Hollywood Bowl to show random pictures (not even videos) instead of showing his live performance on the monitors! That means that in a large venue such as the Hollywood Bowl we were unable to see the performance that was going on. Understand that pretty much only the fans at the very front were able to enjoy the show. This is sad and should not be allowed. We all paid at least $75 per ticket (far seats) to see him and weee unable to even get a video glimpse. Total waste of money. Even though he refused to let his fans see him on stage via the monitors, he decided it was acceptable to show a violent video that showed animals being inhumanly handled. Now we all know he's a vegan--more power to him--but that doesn't mean that just because he has views that we all need to share them, or even worse, that we all need to be tortured with videos of horrible people doing horrible things to animals. It's a concert, not a political rally. Total dissapomtiment, and my last Morrissey show.

I'm sorry to give one small part of criticism with Morrissey's set. I wish the two screens on each side of the stage would act as cameras for those people seated so far away. I do like how they worked into the songs. Whether it was a video of police brutality or still photo image of President Trump's face used over the baby from Morrissey's "Years of Refusal" album cover, he did a wonderful job in song choice in his set. The pace was excellent. I like how he pulled out a Smith's song "How Soon is Now." The interaction of him and the audience was amusing and his backing band were spectacular. Great show and worth the 2 hour drive to see. Billy Idol was an excellent choice in opening for Morrissey and a good sport about it. Thank you Hollywood Bowl!!

Morrissey did not disappoint, if you are a fan. His weird outlook and culture views are unparalleled. In a world of canned entertainment, it is refreshing to have a showman still command the stage. Bonus was Billy Idol, still rocking in this free world.
