Cheap Trick

Cheap Trick

CHEAP TRICK IN CONCERT:More than four decades after their debut, hard rock titans Cheap Trick continue to possess the same energy and flair that made them an arena rock staple in the '70s. The band has enjoyed an unbroken run ever since their formation in 1973, and it's easy to see why — their chemistry on stage is undeniable, and they clearly have a blast as they treat fans to nostalgic performances of classics like "Surrender" and "The Flame." Back on the road in 2014 with fellow hard rockers Boston, Cheap Trick will bring their signature high-energy show to fans around the country on a string of highly anticipated dates. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Formed in Illinois in 1973, Cheap Trick recorded demos and toured throughout the Midwest before releasing their self-titled 1977 debut.

Really enjoyed the show. Loved the venue. Was easy to see the band from anywhere. Staff was really courteous. Even the parking attendants were exceptionally nice. The only down side was the audio was too loud. I was a little disappointed in Ricky's playing. I have been a fan since 77 and he usually is on point, but seemed more into "showering" pics on the audience than his playing. Ive seen this in other bands due to hearing loss or worse (Malcolm Young of AC/DC died of Dementia 2 days after this concert). Hope Rick is well. The rest of the band were great. Even Robins voice was still spot on. I was afraid he would be losing his voice after all these years but was great. Tom was great as usual and I even warmed up to Daxx (yes I still miss Bun E Carlos) who played a great set. They were my first concert ever on August 14th 1978 at the Tower theater and 39 years later I still had to see them live.

The concert was great. It was performed just like it was on the album including the symphony and sitar band. It is a must see. The seating at the Hilton was OK. Stadium seating would be better. Some women complained they couldn't see the stage very well if there over the people in front of them.

If you love Beatles music, this is the show for you. If you like Cheap Trick, bonus! However, be forwarned, there is NO Cheap Trick music in this show AT ALL. It is not a concert, it is a show. Having said that, it was well done and entertaining. The big screens for the cheap seats aren't HD, although the theater itself is not huge, so that might not be an issue for you.

Tix said show at 7. They did not allow people to enter until 7:30. We had to stand outside in the cold and windy weather. Show didn't actually start until 8. That should have been made clear on the website or the ticket itself. Aside from Live Nation issues, Cheap Trick rocked it out!!

Cold windy night, and staff let us into a preparty to warm up and buy a drink, nice!.Cheap Trick are a classic band from a long time ago, that still rock the house, and sounded great.Great show with the classics, these guys are up there in age now but still sound great!! I was shocked that the vocals stood the test of time, cause lets be honest this is one reason why some bands stop performing, not Cheap Trick!! Everyone was spot on.

This was my first time at this venue and I recommend it. Very intimate feeling because it s not too big. Cheap Trick were amazing, as usual. Never get tired of seeing them. They have such a large library of songs that you can see them several times and it s a different setlist every time. Love this band.

Cheap Trick never disappoints, but this show was one of the best I've been to. They were on fire from beginning to end. The audience was on it's feet the entire show! Robin's voice is still amazing, Rick is still playing his 5 neck over his head, Tom is still killing it on his 12 string bass. You can't get any better! Unlike many other artists who complain about people taking pictures, Cheap Trick gets into it. Mugging for everyone's cameras, taking pictures with fans, etc. Their fans are there to have a good time and they do everything they know to make sure the fans go home happy.

I was so looking forward to this show, as Cheap Trick was one of the bands from my youth that I had never seen live. I recently had seen them on a Guitar Center Sessions special which added to my excitement. The disappointment began when we entered the venue. There were steep ramps to the upper level, which my wife and I, with our knee issues, had a bit of trouble with. Then the "usher" didn't even know which section was ours, and ran us back and forth until we got back to where we originally started. We finally climbed the steep stairs to our row and risked near death and squeezed past the two gentlemen between the aisle and our seats on the narrow precipice which was our row, and sat down, all hot and sweaty just in time for the lights to dim. The venue was built long before amplification and had the acoustics to prove it. Being only a casual fan, and with the horrible acoustics, only a few songs were recognizable through the first 2/3 of the show. Finally, we were able to rock out during the last third of the show and the encore, hearing the songs we knew and loved. The sound even seemed to improve, but was still somewhat distorted. The band put on a great show. They played all of our favorites except She's Tight. Unfortunately, the venue ruined the experience for us. Needless to say, the trip down ramp was just as trying, and we will never see another show (or recommend one) at this venue.

This band is amazing not only are they talented but the way they interact with their fans. They truly love them as much as we love the band. The music is flawless. Robin Zander's voice is as good as day one. Rick Nielsen is # 1 at his game and Tom Petersson is a master at the 12 string bass. And lets not forget Daxx what an amazing Drummer. He brings life to the show. Like I have said in past reviews they are like a good wine getting better with age. And just a touch of Daxx brings back the kid in all of them. Longer, Hard rockin Sets... Absolutely amazing.

This was the first time I've seen Cheap Trick live since 1990. Robin's voice is as food as it's ever been, Tom and his 12 string bass are remarkable, and Rick is still chewing up the scenery. We miss Bun, but the new drummer can play anything the band puts out. The Majestic is a beautiful theater, and San Antonio fans are simply the best. There is no flashy scenery, no lasers, and no pyrotechnics; just good music. My only complaint was that the set list was a little short. CT is still the quintessential American rock sound of the late 70s and early 80s.

First time to finally see Cheap Trick live and was not disappointed. They had a great performance with a lot of energy. Classic songs along with a few new ones and a party atmosphere. The Baxter arena staff were friendly and professional and did a great job for the first concert at the arena. No opening band so would have been great if they played about another 30 minutes. They were and remain a great American rock 'n roll band that doesn't take themselves too seriously. Despite some of their silliness, I think their music has some depth if you want it, and is a lot of fun otherwise. I was in the front row, right in front of Rick Nielsen. He is rather amusing, but I think we all knew that. Between the silly gestures, hijinks, and guitar pick throwing - one of them purposely down the blouse of the woman next to me - I saw some fairly impressive guitar playing; he seems to play more lead riffs live than he did on their recordings. Robin sang with vigor, but it was hard to tell how good it sounded (front row is not the place to be to *hear* the show). Regardless, this was like finding yourself suddenly back in 1979 watching a great rock band in their prime.

It seems like Cheap Trick fans are the only ones who know how great this band really is. They sound just as good, if not better, than when I saw them last over 25 years ago. Robin Zander still belts out amazing vocals; Rick Nielsen has full command of the crowd with his ever-changing assortment of custom guitars; Daxx Nielsen doesn't miss a beat; and there is nothing like the sound of Tom Petersson's 12-string bass. I've considered myself a fan since Budokan, but they threw in a couple of tunes that I didn't even recognize, dedicating one in particular to the fan club by saying they never play it (guess I should finally join the fan club). From the first note, I knew it was going to be good because the crowd got up on their feet and pretty much stayed there the entire show. Former Senator Scott Brown made a cameo appearance and played guitar and sang during "Surrender". If you're looking for a great, rocking show, don't miss Cheap Trick when they come to town. You'll realize how much you forgot you liked this most underrated and under-appreciated rock and roll band, and fall in love with them all over again. I did!

My sister and I took our dad to this show as his Christmas gift, and it was AWESOME! I cannot believe how GREAT they sounded. Robin still sounds INCREDIBLE after all these years. Rick changed guitars for just about every song, and even used the "mini-me" one and the 5-neck guitar at the end! Tom used the same 12-string the whole show, and Dax (Rick's son) killed it on the drums! It was a fast-paced, high energy show with a decent setlist. The guys still moved all around the stage like it was 1978 again! The crowd was into it the whole time, especially when their biggest hits came on. However, our only complaints about the show were it was short (about 1 hour and 20 minutes), and they left out a few songs we were hoping to hear including "The Flame (because seriously, how do you NOT play that one?!) Seems like they change their setlist for each show, but it was nice to hear some songs I didn't really know before. Regardless, it was still a great show and we would definitely go see them again! (We give this show a 4.5-star rating, but they won't let us make that selection!)

It's funny how we get older things in our life change. Kids our responsibilities to house and family. Our past nothing but a scrapbook. But once in awhile a piece of time is brought back and our past comes alive. That's how I felt that cold night in Merrillville. I sat for the first few songs content on just relaxing through the show. But I will be damn if some curious notion didn't filter through. I felt like I was a kid again listening to cheap trick in my basement yelling the words to their songs. When they started laying "I want you to want me". That's All It Took I was back in my basement singing put loud. The band transformed into their younger days and wow was I into it. Know what everyone around me came back in time the we're into also, WOW.

Over the years i've seen and worked (as a crew member) over five hundred concerts from various artists. Rick and the guys made us feel that they were there for you as an individual. They didn't "phone it in" as so many artists today. I just wish more groups like this would come to the Charleston SC area. They erased 30 years of adulthood for me those few hours. I saw Cheap trick in concert on a show called Night Flight way back in the 80s when I was in my early teens. I started buying Cheap trick records the next day. I waited several years before seeing them in person and I just did it for the 2nd time last week. They are a true rock band with timeless music. Great rock and roll is not brain surgery. Great rock and roll should make you feel like a kid again. Great rock and roll is fun. Cheap Trick is all of this and more. These guys get it, always have and always will, and they do love to participate with and for the audience. It's called "show business" for a reason. I have been to Club Casino over a hundred times in my years and I have a Top Ten list of shows from back in the 60's to the present and Cheap Trick occupies 2 positions in said Top Ten, this particular show just entered the lexicon. The Casino was simply rocking! The band never sounded better. These guys take care of themselves and it shows. Robin Zander's vocals were powerful, it was if he dialed it back 40 years. Rick, Tom and Dakk's prowess on their instruments are a perfect mesh. Can't wait to see them again in Hampton.

I love Cheap Trick and have been going to shows for 30 years now (first concert was Cheap Trick in 1983). I love it when they are the only band playing (if not, they tend to play short shows). This was a full-out 2+ hour show with all of their greatest songs, heavier on earlier material. It is truly a treat to hear this guys still sound so good live. Rarely get to see Cheap Trick anymore unless they are the opening act for some d-bags like Aerosmith or playing in a casino ballroom. If you can see Cheap Trick as a stand-alone act they will not disappoint you. The concert on July 6 was 100 minutes of non-stop CT music with all the energy of their younger years. These guys are not old rockers parodying themselves. Bun Carlos fans may be disappointed that the legendary drummer rarely joins the band for gigs these days, but Rick Nielsen's son, Daxx handles the job of drumming with the signature pace we are used to from the legend. Robin Zander's voice hasn't lost a thing, and Paul Peterssen's unique 12-string bass style is one of the secrets to the band's sound and is amazing to watch. Nielsen never disappoints and any guitar player will probably spend the whole show just wathching him. After looking at set lists from this summer, it is apparent that the band has a few key songs they will always play - "Surrender", "I know What I Want", "Dream Police" - but they also very much enjoy mixing it up and pulling out a lot of old rocker tunes, so don't be surprised if you hear one you haven't heard in about 30 years. If you are lucky enough to get up close like we were, bring your safety goggles to protect yourself from the barrage of Nielsen's flying guitar picks. I attended with my 12 year old son who was in the direct line of fire from the best pick flicker in the business. A great show.

It was a lot of show packed into 3 hours, but they were all amazing. We did the Meet and Greet with Cheap Trick, and would do it again, even though it was a quickie and involved quite a bit of confusion and waiting. Front row seats gave us up close interaction with the performers, though the sound was probably the best farther back. Robin Zander and Pat still have amazing voices, and while I knew nothing about Neil Geraldo before, he is incredibly talented, and pretty frickin' hot. Even the hubby was impressed at how good he looks. Rick Nielsen was the social butterfly and flinging picks everywhere. They all looked good and rocked hard. The bassists for both bands were amazing. Pat's drummer is incredible, and there was even a cellist who rocked. Even the opening act was entertaining (Brynn Marie). Everyone started on time and promptly which is nice. The only reason I'm taking off a star is that one or two more songs by each act would have been nice, although it was a long night overall, and because the directions for the meet and greet kept changing.

I got a chance to meet the band before the show, Tom Peterson was exceptionally nice and really seemed like he enjoyed meeting the fans! Robin was very cordial and has a heck of a handshake, a man's man! Rick was funny, joking around and gave everyone a pick, the new drummer,( his name escapes me, sorry) was also very nice! Then my seat was second row right in front of Robin. Robin's son's band opened and they did a great job playing a few Hendrix cover tunes, but never announced the Bands name, Then Cheap Trick took to the stage and the place went crazy, they played a lot of their hits and a few tunes off the new CD called The Latest, very good album! They seemed to be having a great time, they played and sang as good as ever( I've seen them about a dozen times over the past 25 years, Overall an excellent concert, HIGHLY recommended!

I had so much fun at this show! I've always been a big fan of Cheap Trick and saw them live a few times in the late 70's. I bought tickets for me and my husband (for his birthday). He had never seen Cheap Trick live (he was not a fan back in the day). But after listening to me play their music he decided he actually liked some of the songs. He enjoyed the show very much and was surprised at their talent, energy, and that they could really rock it out. He was even singing along. Being that my hubby has played drums, he was slightly disappointed Bun E. Carlos wouldn't be playing. However, Rick's son was spot on. It was a great show and I liked the intimacy of the venue. Rock on!

[Review by dad]: After all these years, Cheap Trick still knows how to rock! And with a large selection of songs to choose from, they played many hits and some fan favorites, going all the way back to the beginning! Being in a small venue, like the Taft Theatre, made this a special concert. They played better than bands half their age. They truly love the music they play and it shows! There wasn t a dull moment. From Rick s excellent guitar playing to Tom s 12 string bass attack to Robin s superb vocal talents and the addition of Dax on drums they sounded just as relevant and fresh as they did years ago! If you get a chance to see Cheap Trick live go see them you won t be disappointed! [Review by Me; Daughter]: I loved Cheap Trick, they're amazing! My favorite guy is Tom Peterson, haha, :)

Cheap Trick rocked out like no other. They were incredible, sounded as good live if not better than they do listening to them on studio recordings. We were so impressed and only wished for MORE MORE MORE. Hope they come back to Cincinnati soon!!

The checkerboard stage backdrop and amps set the visual cues for what would be a kick-ass show. Sure, they're not as young and skinny as they were back in the 80's heyday, but then who is? Rick Neilson is still the best showman and his ongoing parade of guitars from his collection (a change for every song) along with flinging dozens of guitar picks into the crowd (I got 4) made it hard to take your eyes off of him. He just looked like he was having so much fun. Robin Zander's voice sounded great and could he could still hit all those high notes unlike some other aging rock stars of the era. His stage presence was undeniable as he strutted around and engaged the audience. Tom Peterson and his 12 string bass...what else can you say. The man has a monster wall of sound that drives the rockin' rhythm section. Rick's son was sitting in for Bun E. Carlos and did a fine job of providing the requisite pounding thunder. They played songs spanning from the very early years (pre-Budokan) as well as some from the late 80's and a few from the newer albums. I've been a fan since '78, but this was my first opportunity to see them. They may be hovering around 60 years old, but they kick ass. If any young musicians out there want a lesson on how to create a great rock show without a bunch of fluff, pre-recorded overdubs, and other staging set gimmics, then look to Cheap Trick for a "how to".

From the beginning of the show Cheap Trick showed once again how great they are, they played all the hits ( I want you to want me, Dream Police, Surrender and The Flame) and they also added songs like She's Tight, Magical Mystery Tour and Dont Be Cruel. Rick Neilsen was on top of his game, switching guitars and throwing about 200 picks in the audience which is his trademark. (Yes I got one!!!!) Robin Zander and Tom Peterson also were fabulous. Dax Neilsen (Rick's Son) played drums and did a great job. Great Band, Great Venue in the Fillmore in Silver Spring. Cant wait to see them again somewhere down the road.

Cheap Trick is consistently GREAT! I traveled from Illinois for this show & I am SO GLAD that I did. They are in top form still! The BMO Harris Pavilion however has quite possibly the worst sound I've heard at an outdoor venue. How is it possible to make it so bad? Who designed this?

However - the sound system needs work. I've been to 2 shows in the past month and something needs adjustment because the sound was too loud for the space. The instruments and the voices are not clear and seem to have a lot of interference. Having said that, both of the acts I've seen were excellent and the venue staff was extremely accommodating and helpful!

One of the best concert experiences I have ever had. I went with my son. We had purchased the VIP experience and it was worth every penny. The members of Cheap Trick were very engaging, the venue was very nice and the concert was great. After meeting and getting pictures taken with the band, we were let on the floor before anyone else was permitted to enter. I had seen Cheap Trick several times before and I knew Rick Nielson threw guitar picks out at random, so we chose a spot in front of Rick and the front of the stage. We got multiple picks, along with one of the best shows I have ever experienced. My hats off to the boys of Cheap Trick. They are still rocking after all these years.

More than forty years later, and Cheap Trick still brought the goods. Seeing the bands that used to sell out arenas in a more intimate setting has become something of a passion for me in the last few years. The Queen was exactly the right venue to see them in.

Long time favorite Cheap Trick rocks in the intimate setting of the Queen in Wilmington. Show started on time (no opening act) they stormed through a great line up of their hits plus. Sound was excellent, Rick N and crew were in top form, new guitar every song. RZ still can belt out the vocals. Show lasted 90 min, would have liked to have seen another 15-30 min to catch a couple more tunes, maybe another cover or two. 5 stars for venue and Cheap Trick.

What a show! All the classics sounded just as sharp, the songs did not stray from their original arrangement. Listening to them perform "HEAVEN TONIGHT" made the hairs on my arm stand up just as it did when I first heard it back in 1977. I'm happy to know they stood the test of time. The band has toured the world over, seeing them perform live is was an honor. They definitely belted out tunes that are a soundtrack to my life, and I'm sure millions of others. I'd recommend all Cheap Trick fans catch up with them on their current tour and surrender themselves to a past sound in present day. Cheap Trick still rules!

I have been trying to get to a Cheap Trick show the past couple years, but it hasn't worked out. Penns Peak was close to home and a no-brainer when I found out the date was free for me. Cheap Trick's signature songs were delivered as expected, but there were a couple songs that were just unrecognizable noise. I don't know all of their songs, but I couldn't make out a word on some of them. I would have also like them to work in a Tom Petty song. I thought that would have an obvious addition to the show and I thought we would have gotten at least 2 hours out of them. We were out of there in 1 1/2 hours. Overall it was a great trip back to my younger days and some good rock and roll. Thanks to the band for still making an effort to tour and appear at a smaller venue like Penns Peak.

I don't know if it was the temperature inside the Casino that was to blame but Cheap Trick started their set with lackluster performance and sound. It was so cold and windy outside that when people opened the doors to smoke the cold came right through the ballroom. I wore my winter coat the whole show. Cheap Trick fortunately did warm up after several songs and played their typical tight set for the rest of the night to a packed house of appreciative fans. Robin Zander's son filled in on drums and did a great job! Looking forward for Cheap Trick's return but hopefully in the summer time!

As if Cheap Trick would or could not deliver the goods. These guys have been doing it for what seems forever. From the moment that first note is hit to the bow onstage before leaving, this band continues to a treasure. Robin Zander has never sounded better. The guitar and bass work of Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson are total pro. For this particular gig, the drumming was provided by Robin Taylor Zander, Robin's son and he was spot on. A human metronome. Folks, if you long for a solid dose of pure, unadulterated rock and roll without any of the saccharin, Cheap Trick is the ticket. IMHO, the greatest American R&R band still kicking it out. Watts, a local Boston band, were outstanding as well. Talk about pedal to the metal. Whew! Solid tunes, top notch licks, an active stage show (these are not guys who wear flannel shirts and stand like dime store Indians), check them out. This is a good, well worked rock and roll band.

Unbelievable show! First, this was my first time to Hampton Beach casino and I was very impressed - one of the best concert facilities, if not the best, I ve been to. Next, Watts, a rock band out of Boston, was the warm-up band. I ve never heard of them before but they put on a great show. Just a half hour of pure rock and roll with a nice edge to it. And finally, Cheap Trick. I ve seen them at least a dozen times and they never fail to impress. They are simply the best live band in the business. This was a special show as Robin s son Robin-Taylor was the drummer, pinch hitting for Daxx Nielsen whose wife just delivered a baby. Of course, Daxx is pinch hitting for Bun E., but that s another story. Anyway, Robin-Taylor did an amazing job and the song list included some tough drum songs such as Ain t That a Shame. They played all of their classics plus added some of their new stuff. They seemed to feed off the energy of the crowd, which was on their feet from chord 1. It s amazing that they ve done more than 5,000 shows and they still get up for each one.

We saw Cheap Trick at Humphrey's quite a few years ago and LOVED LOVED LOVED them. So we convinced some friends to join us and boy do we regret it. The first half of the concert was unrecognizable as they played material from their new album. I'm sorry, but we came to hear the stuff we grew up with and loved....it's fun to be nostalgic. I don't mind if you want to sprinkle a new one in here and there but this was over the top and excessive. No one was engaged and a lot of our fellow concert goers were looking at their cell phones out of boredom. So they finally played a good oldie or two and started to rev up the crowd then announced they had a request to sing a Beatles song. WTH, I'm there to hear Cheap Trick do their good old songs, not a crappy rendition of a great Beatles song. They then went back to a mixture of their old and new songs but the momentum was more or less lost by that point. They were opening for Foreigner but it was a work night so we were only there to see Cheap Trick and left when they were done. I wish we could've stayed to see Foreigner as they may have salvaged the night for us. Overall a bummer :-(

Cheap Trick was a disaster at the Aug. 19 concert in Houston. They began singing boring songs that no one had heard of and it went on and on for 45 minutes - the entire audience was deflated, not moving, and unhappy. We all kept waiting for a recognizable, classic Cheap Trick song. They then finally moved on to the music we came to hear, but it was too late. People were flat from 45 minutes of waiting ... The band seemed more intent on promoting their new album than giving the fans what they wanted to hear - the old stuff. I came specifically to see Cheap Trick so it was very disappointing for me.

We were very dissapointed with this show. Cheap trick showed up 45 minuts late because of traffic back-ups. They played for 30 minutes, then it started to rain. They left the stage and never came back on. The 30 minutes they played they were great. We were very dissapointed. The week before we saw Darius Rucker at the same venue (the Big E) and it rained during his show as well, but he played on anyway. The fans woudl've stayed to see the show if Cheap Trick kept playing.

It was no secret that night who was playing and who came out to see them. Cheap Trick has been around since my high school days and the audience that night could have been the 30 year high school reunion for any class around the world. We wanted to remember. We wanted to reassure ourselves that we had not gone over the edge. We wanted to know that we were still cool! Cheap Trick took us on that journey for a couple of hours that night. There was no opening band. The crowd knew they had to be there on time this night. Most everyone was in their seat by 8pm. The lights dimmed shortly there after and a video began the show as it was projected onto a large white sheet that blocked the view of the stage. And then on cue, without any further fanfare, Cheap Trick began to play and continued to rock the house with the energy that we had all come to expect. One would expect a simple production because, after all, this show was practically retro. But to the surprise and pleasure of the fans, the production for the concert was great! A secondary platform was assembled to stage the string and brass orchestra that accompanied the band!! The addition of the orchestra was instrumental in providing a full sound to the show. Excellent!! The platform was also designed to be part of the onstage media screen. This allowed them to add more videos and special affects to the performance. Yes, this was a big show and Cheap Trick delivered!! They played all the crowd favorites for the next two hours!! Two hours because there was no encore. The audience was fine with that and appreciated the longer show. For this particular concert the seats were very good. Due to the stage arrangement and production, there was no blind spot from these seats. We definitely close enough that we felt like we were in an intimate setting. A picture of the stage from our seats is enclosed. You can see that we were only a few rows from the stage. The seats also allowed us to easily see the multimedia screens on either side of the stage. This was good because Cheap Trick incorporated some videos throughout the evening. One final note. Bun E. Carlos is still a member of Cheap Trick, but he did not tour with them this time. Hope to see him in the future. Rock on everyone!!

Cheap still puts on a great show. Robin Zander in particular still sings w/amazing power and versatility. The added string/horn/choir sections were a plus. I took my son to the show as his 1st concert and he was not disappointed...in the least. besides the Dream Police album in full they pulled from all their albums and picked some surprising gems. The only negative to me was the sound @ The Greek. We were in Section A and it was pretty muddy for a lot of the show. I haven't seen a show there in years and I've heard that's a regular complaint. It didn't stop us from having amazing fun. I think everyone in the place knew every lyric to every song. That's saying a lot.
