Alice Smith

ALICE SMITH IN CONCERT:When it comes to the legendary voices of soul and R&B, singer-songwriter [do we want a slash or hyphen? Doesn’t matter to me, just want to make sure we have a consistent rule] Alice Smith is right up there with the best of them. Ms. Smith cuts a commanding figure on stage, and her formidable presence is only intensified by the broad, powerful swath [right word? Are you trying to emphasize the range? I guess that’s covered with broad… How about “by her powerful, far-ranging voice” or something?] of her voice. Whether she's covering Cee Lo Green's "Fool for You" or mesmerizing with originals like "Baby," fans can expect big, beautiful things from Smith on her 2014 tour.

This was my 6th time seeing Alice Smith. Each time, her voice gets stronger, and her show gets tighter. A true talent. I love her!

Alice is truly amazing! This was the second time I saw her. I took my 10yr. Old to NY to see her. I want my daughter to know what a real artist is. Alice is a true gift to the world. She is elegant and fierce! She sang some new songs, each one as amazing as the last! Loved hearing some Nina and Prince as well. Can't wait to see her again!

I see Alice whenever she's in town. I expected the show to start an hour late. But what I wasn't expecting was Rebecca Jordan who wasn't on the event line up to open for her. I was disappointed because, well... I didn't come to see her. Even after her set it took Alice another 40 minutes before she got on stage. So in total it was 2 hours and 19 minutes from when the event started to when Alice came on. But OH MAN. She is worth the wait. I was a little peeved that she didn't acknowledge or apologize for keeping us waiting, in the standing room only venue, for so long. But what can I say... she puts on a good show. She did a good balance of the old and new. And as expected she tore the house down.

Alice Smith is the truth!!! Her backing band is the truth!!! Everyone was feeling it. It was almost a religious experience that all enjoyed. I was honored to be there. Bowery Ballroom is always a chill place to hear great musicians before they blow up. I hope to experience Alice Smith here before the rest of the world wakes up and gets with real music. She is very engaging and she really put on a show. Wow!!!

When Alice Smith took the stage she was greeted by a sold out, very enthusiastic crowd & gave 100%. She was in perfect form w/ both voice & performance which shows that she can hold her own against any other vocal artist, rivaling Adele and others. Why she is not more well known to me is a mystery. Highlights which were many included the opener Caberet, Fool for you & Another Love (which had many in the audience singing along). I will be spreading the love about Alice to all that will listen & will run to her next show!

Fans have been waiting years for the return of Alice Smith. And she knew that. Which is why she gave us exactly what we came to see... a SHOW! Even before the moment she slinked on the stage in a form-fitting leopard-printed dress, Smith announced her entrance in song, working the masses -- which included actress (and Diana Ross offspring!) Tracee Ellis Ross -- into a frenzy. For the next hour and a half, she blended her knack for crafting great songs with a powerhouse voice and a commanding stage presence that both wowed and woke up those of us who endured the 10 PM start time and the lackluster opening act. With a healthy dose of tracks from her debut album "For Lovers, Dreamers & Me" and her newest release "She", we were given our old faves and soon to be new ones. Then she was joined onstage by her husband, Citizen Cope, for a cover of Prince's classic "Pop Life" and the crowd literally went wild. If Alice Smith is coming to your town, do yourself a favor and go see her. Seriously. And get plenty of sleep beforehand, because you won't be able to once she's done with you. You'll be haunted by her performance throughout the night and into the next day. She's just THAT amazing!!

Magnificent is the only word to describe Alice Smith's performance. I became a fan a little late in the game. I started going to her concerts when she was with child and I thought she was great. This was my 6th time seeing her and needless to say I was blown away by the pureness of her voice, stage presence, and fashion. She was all glamour that night and EVERYONE LOVED IT! She practically did all the new songs on her new album, SHE, and some old ones- without breaking a sweat. She is a force to be reckoned with. Watch out world! If you are skeptical, buy her album and check her out live!

She might be one of the most gifted singer/entertainers I've ever witnessed live. Take Aretha, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Beyonce, Alicia Keys and throw them in a blender and you might get a sense of how Alice Smith moves, sounds, croons, etc. She's got soul, style , and simply lights up the room and it never dims. It is a MUST SEE, period.

I've been an Alice Smith fan since she released For Lover, Dreamers & Me -- and was lucky enough to see her in concert at The Birchmere a couple of years ago. I was so looking forward to seeing here again, and esp. since it would be at The Howard Theatre. Neither Alice Smith, or the venue, disappointed me at all. Her voice is so strong and natural it should be illegal. Her stage presence and personality is phenomenal...and you can't help but have a great time at her concerts.

Alice has progressed by leaps & bounds in stage decorum, musical presentation, and total professionalism. Her voice management and body movements were effectively used in interpreting the distinct message of each song, from moments of emotional intensity to seductive tenderness. I was amazed by the vocal power coming from such a slender body. She demonstrated a performer not at work but enjoying her artistry to the fullest while ushering you, her audience, into her world. What a joy is was listening to a current-day singer whose pitch was unmistakably accurate. This was one of the proudest moments of my life.

Alice Smith always brings her A-game! This woman's voice is incredibly powerful, and she delivers her music with passion, humor, with a strong dose of sex-appeal. Her set was a little less than two hours (following an opening set by the AMAZING Kimberly Nichole), and included about half the songs from her "She" album, a few songs from " For Lovers, Dreamers & Me," and few covers (including Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams").

Alice Smith is a soulful, rock goddess. She is as captivating as a bashful angel, and yet, her voice, as gritty and unapologetic as your favorite Southern Auntie. She wails and holds like a trumpeter. And, you love her. She is honest and approachable. You are happy to know her; that she exists, like some hybrid of Shirley Bassey and Stevie Nicks. Alice Smith is unrestrained, easy does it, strong, and delicate, a lava- like firey grace. It is an incredible show with and incredible 3 piece. Trust me. Oh! Mrs. Smith...

This was my first time in both seeing Alice Smith and being at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. She was a lot of fun to watch. My wife and I loved her singing, her style, and her energy. One felt she gave it her all when she was on stage. A nice surprise was hearing her do the Pretenders' Don't Get Me Wrong. Very cool. I'd definitely go see her again. I was a bit surprised how well many in the audience knew her songs - and were singing along and before her . The only quibble I had was waiting for almost 1 1/2 hours for Alice to hit the stage. This isn't unique to her or this venue. I wonder if performers and music venues forget that some audience members might have time constraints that could make it difficult to hang out until much later than planned. Also, after waiting around, one thinks, "this performer had bettter be pretty good after making me wait so long." Fortunately, Alice Smith was worth it.

Ticket master review If you have never been to an Alice Smith concert you are missing the experience of a lifetime. When you attend one of her concerts it feels like you have a front row seat to a dawn of something special. You will feel like you are being treated to the caliber of veteran talent that was much more common place in the jazz and rock and roll eras of old, yet you feel a splash of a new movement afloat, where Smith is offering you a glimpse at something you have never before seen or heard. You may have enjoyed her tasty gumbo of pop, folk, rock, country, reggae, soul and r&b on her record, but to truly appreciate Alice Smith is to see her on stage. I was privileged to see Alice Smith both nights June 20th and June 21st at Howard University. This was the second and third concert of hers that I attended and I have to say that all three shows have left me convinced that Alice Smith puts on the best concert you may see in your lifetime. Full disclosure, I have been to a ton of concerts, including Anita Baker, Sade, Maxwell, Jill Scott, and I still believe that Ms. Smith is the best concert experience that I ever have had to date. From the second her tall bronze body appeared on stage, clad in a British style haute couture gown with elaborate embellishments around the hip area, she had Howard University eating out of the palm of her hand. Alice started the show with the peppy brit rock anthem "Won't Break". She then led a rousing rendition of "Gary's Song". Her voice manages to be equal parts raw and pitch perfect, and she had no problem filling the Howard with her massive 4 octave voice. Being in the front row for the first night was an incredible treat. With that view, you are able to witness the impressive way that her facial expressions and body language along with her movements which are sometimes spastic and quirky other times fluid and elegant, work in concert with her powerful voice to deliver a total entertainment experience. Tom Lubay on guitar, Aaron Steel on the drums, and Frank Carreno on bass congregate behind Alice to produce a tight crisp sound that is the perfect meld of r&b, rock, soul, reggae, jazz, and folk in a way you never imagine. Her call and response with the band and they way she gives and takes with them exchanging melodic verses with their intricate instrumental melodies indicates a fluidity that shows that they have been playing together for a long time and they enjoy it. Smith is smokey and dramatic, with an amazing new cover of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams, with a hypnotic bass line played by Carreno. Smith's voice provides a canvas of yearning, pain, and redemption all at the same time. And yet, she also knows how to bring the crowd to their feet and party. With Love Endeavor , she encourages the audience to get out of their seats, for their "grand opportunity" because the show is winding down to its conclusion. In her shimmery dress and heels, Smith is unafraid to dance, her spastic, frenetic movements fully emoting the desire for a romantic entanglement that doesn't have to last forever while Lubay wails endlessly on his guitar. You never want her to stop during this rousing number, and you think she indeed has stopped, and your heart aches for a minute until you realize that she can be enticed back for one last song, the title track on the album She. For She, the encore performance, she begins the song with a mild chant which turns into a ferocious roar where you truly learn why she can accurately call herself "she", in a song that personifies the struggles that she had with the music industry before finally being able to make music her way. She screams, wails, croons, and rocks in this song, before head banging and ending it all in a folky roar. You can sense the exhaustion in her goodbye, and you know that Alice Smith has lain bare all that she has to offer you as a performer, and treated you to the most amazing concert experience of your life. How did Friday differ from Saturday? I experienced all of the above. Yet Saturday had a more relaxed cool, and it was perfect in its imperfections. For example, Alice brought back a fan favorite, that she has not been including in her recent set lists, "Do I". She plowed through the track with reckless abandon, pulling in all her rock, folk, soul, and reggae sensibilities, while the true fans in the audience were aware that Smith flubbed the first verse, as Smith smiled and winked knowingly at them. However, her voice was so uniquely beautiful- aquiline , yet tortured that no one noticed, or cared whether all the lyrics were perfect, everyone was in tune to the emotion of what she was singing at that moment- with a voice like Smith's sometimes the words don't matter at all. Alice gave so much of herself on Saturday evening, that during Dream, which was left out of Friday's set, but brought back into the concert on Saturday, that she popped a button on her gown. I believe the majority of the audience thought this was a joke, when she mentioned that she thought she "popped a button". At least I thought she was jesting. Shortly thereafter she treated us to the most beautiful soulful, rocky, folky introduction to a song that I have ever heard with the beginning of the song, The One. I noticed spastic quirky hip gyrations during this introduction. I thought her hip gyrations were funny and adorable and typical Alice when she crooned sultrily, "I'll be right back," I had no idea that she was backstage probably getting the dress stitched back up. But a few songs later, when she came out for the She encore, she ended up holding up her dress, with both hands so it didn't fall, while still singing and giving the crowd her all. As mentioned at the outset I have been to lots of concerts and have never seen a diva sing so hard that she literally sang herself out of her dress. It feels like one of those moments that may have occurred with a legend like Patti Labelle or Diana Ross at some hole in the wall club before they were famous, but this is Alice Smith, the dawn of a new era with a twist of the old and you are at the Howard theater poised to watch Smith on her ascendancy to greatness. Take a front row seat and know that there is no concert that is more important to be at. I will never miss an Alice Smith show when she comes to my area and neither should you.

Alice Smith at city winery was another amazing show. She came on in a simple, pink, cotton sundress to a blaze of other wordly glory, from the first note out of her mouth, with won't break. She wrestled with her hair, basked in the glory of our love, sweated it out, worked it out, danced her heart out, had a drink, had a heart to heart with us and blew our hair back in the breeze with the glorious thunder of her voice. She did two new songs, plus plenty of our old favorites, Won't break, far away, be easy, she, the one, house of the rising son, and dream. Standouts among the old songs were Dream, and she really killed it at the break at the end, I can't wait for my computer to post it, and her raw, blusey, jazzy intro to the one. She is an amazingly rare talent and vocal in an incredibly adorable and charismatic package and we are so much richer for being her fans....If she plays any city near you, you absolutely must go see her. She is an experience you'll never forget!

An Alice Smith show is always an event. I saw her three times in one week in April 2015. Each show is different even if they occur in the same week. That having been said, those three dates in April 2015 impressed me so much, that I declared Alice the greatest living entertainer! That's saying a lot because I am a regular concert attender. Practically every month you can find me at a show, and there are several recent shows I have been to of late, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, but none of them scorch like Alice Smith, who blows a ring of charismatic fire across the stage, from the second she graces the stage, until the last sliver of her dress disappears into the stage left exit. Even having seen her seven times in concert, she managed to thoroughly impress me and leave me stuttering with gaped mouthed awe after the show was through. The crowd at the DC show was incredibly thick. They were here to show the hometown Goddess, who was born and raised in DC some incredible love. It's wonderful to see that the crowds get thicker and thicker, and she becomes more in demand with each passing engagement. As I mentioned in my last review, to witness her performance "feels like you have a front row seat to a dawn of something special." If you've ever seen her, you know what a special experience it is, and you cannot help but share it with others and rave about the performance, and so the crowd grows with each performance like a swarm of bees to the vocal honey that she is providing! It was a smoldering afternoon, but little did I know how hot the heat would become when Alice took the stage! I was wholly unprepared for her 9:30 club set. It seems at some point most entertainers reach a point of perfection, where they are not going to get any better. But with Alice, and this is the 7th time I have seen her, she just keeps getting better and better. Alice floated out to the stage, and as usual you heard her before you saw her. When she appeared, she looked cherubic in a flowing, silver, spangly halter dress, her hair in a long ponytail. If the performance were judged by just presentation alone, she would win the top prize. But then, this Goddess went to open her mouth, and a hush ran over the crowd which had been previously cheering. It was time to listen to the eighth wonder of the universe. She started off with a rousing rendition of Far Away. Thom Lubay and Frank Careeno accompanied Alice on guitar and Bass respectively, however, the drummer was a stand in, and it was his very first time playing with Alice. However, he did not miss a beat, giving Alice the punchy backbeat that she needs in order to do her trademark sensual, yet spastic movements on this track. Also, new for the past few dates are a pair of wonderful background singers, male and female. The gentleman has sang background during the last Alice Smith Tour, however the female was new. Their harmonies gave a push and pull to complement Alice's voice, which is always at its finest as it wavers between raw grittiness, and pure operate flourishes. While this wall of sound was going on, she treated us to her unusual, and spirited rhythms which made her a force that you could not take your eyes off of, but when she opens her mouth, and that voice comes out full throttle, it is a wonder tantamount to first listening to Niagara Falls. You can try as you might to tell someone, or describe how impressive it is, but it leaves you with the ability only to sense, and take it all in aurally as it bathes your senses with sight, sound, color and feeling like you have need before experienced. Sidebar: if you've never heard of Alice and are reading this review, then go immediately to iTunes and download for Lover's and Dreamers and Me, then go to YouTube and watch the woman whose performances you have been listening to and prepare to be blown away. If you have listened to the records, but are on the fence about going to the actual concerts, drop what you are doing right now, and buy a ticket. After far away was over, she jumped straight into Another Love, which was another great choice, and allowed for more of the perfect imperfections of the tribal like rhythms when Alice Dances. Heartfelt and sensual, the crowd was eating out of the palm of her hand. The background vocals gave a nice choral effect for anyone who is used to the background vocals on the album cut would have been very pleased. The operatic timber accompanies her nicely. However, if you are an Alice Smith fan, you've heard all these tracks before, and they are familiar, and tantalizing the way that warm apple pie, and cool ice-cream is, especially if you haven't had a piece for a while. However, what was about to come next, Afrodite, was an amazing addition to the Alice Smith gumbo, a texture of soundscapes, gorgeous vocal warblings, and incredibly intricate rocked out instruments seeped in soul, glazed in jazz, drizzled with folk, and drenched with the blues. Aphrodite, means goddess of love, and Alice is the goddess of song, if there ever was one. The intro to the song was driving, propulsive and catchy, and after a false start, Alice let out a vocal "hey" that was as tacky as acrid lemonade and spicy as pepper. The chorus immediately turned cherubic, and you could hear the insistent urgency, for her lover to "keep it simple, right now to the end\u2026then begin," Thom Lubay cuts a hypnotic groove into the song, reminiscent of another love, but it rocks out a little harder, while the track glides smoothly over Frank Careeno's vocals. An Alice Smith show is an experience that will forever enrich your spirt! An Alice Smith show is an experience of a lifetime, treat yourself to an experience that will forever change you, mind, body and soul, and be certain to pick up your tickets when she comes to your area!

Alice was on point, impeccable. However, we waited almost an hour after her opening act for her to perform. We were dying! The venue was packed and of course we were on our feet since the doors opened at 7PM. Not sure who was to blame - out of all the complaints of those nearby we guessed it was the venue. I can't wait for the day she can perform in a room with seats! Her last song was a new ballad. Kind of wish she would have ended with a bang instead. Show finished at 10:50PM...after waiting so long I thought we'd get 10 more minutes.

Alice Smith killed it! Her vocals were inhuman and I loved her covers (Stevie Nicks, The Animals) and her new material.

Last Friday I had the wonderful blessing to see Alice Smith LIVE at the Brighton Music Hall. This queen is a a pure artist. When she sings, not only does it tickle your ears with joy but enters your heart with love. She sings from the soul. Captivating so many emotions into a beautiful flow! What i love about her most is when she gives some extra efff to songs...that attitude stank diva face that reads "I did that" or that MJ BAD face "where the music feels so good and sounds soooo dam great, it hurts" face. So elegant, poise, fierce and with a wonderful sense of humor, she is phenomenal in every way! Her Nina Simone rendition of "I put a spell on you" had me lost in thought for a second (maybe a few minutes lol).... I absolutely love that feeling. Thank you for making my soul happy :D and moreover thank you for being a true artist Ms. Smith, you're inspiring in every way! Hope she comes back to Beantown <3

This is the 3rd year I've seen Alice in Boston and every year I leave with mixed feelings. She's an AMAZING performer and the band is awesome. BUT her shows are so short it's disappointing. Door opens at 7pm, she goes on at like 9:30/10pm and it's over by 11/11:30. It wasn't even a full hour and a half. She didn't play Cabaret, Shot, or Woodstock which are 3 of my favorites. For only having two albums, there's no reason why she can't play all of her songs. She did 3 covers, which were fun but I would have much rather heard some more of her songs. Venue is great; nice and intimate and you have a good view from wherever you stand. Honestly i'll keep going every year she's in town, even though her sets are short, it's totally worth hearing her live.

I've been wanting to see Alice Smith for years but she doesn't give many concerts. If I ever start to lose my memory, I will still remember this concert. Wonderful voice and presence. Would follow her anywhere. When I first got there, I was disappointed that there were opening acts but Jaime Woods and Shea Rose both more than held their own. An amazing evening with three very talented women (and their musicians as well).

Alice brings mouth the music and a presence that is unique and powerful. She has a great band behind her and they really complement each other. My first time seeing her: very entertaining and the very diverse audience loved her. I was not family with her music before this show but I will see her again.

I loved every moment of the concert. For once, an artist performed all of my favorite songs and I was blown away by the fact that she sounds better live. The true talent that she is, she performed with all of her heart, as if it were her last. I look forward to her next album!

This was my first concert, ever so of course I was nervous about the event and if it would worth my time and money. It was fantastic!!!! Alice graced the stage looking beautiful and had the personality of an artist who is totally relatable. She killed every single song and sung like it was her last. I have been a fan since her first album and was thrilled when I saw that she would be in town for 2 days. I grabbed a Friend who had never heard of her before and went. Needless to say,my friend is now is fan and we were both geeked at the concert. It was a full house with everyone singing along, finishing her songs for her and shouting how much they love her. I would totally see her again and look forward to it.

She is absolutely phenomenal live! Her live vocals are absolutely incredible. Her cover of House of the Rising Sun was beyond amazing. And her band is great. Basically she slays and she is a must see! Only criticism is that she was an hour late, but it was definitely worth the wait!

Alice Smith is a must see performer. Her albums don't do her voice justice. You already love what you hear on the album, then you hear her live and get blown away. She is a real person, who is down to earth, and who makes it feel like it is just you and her hanging while she sings you a few stories. Her songs are stories that anyone can relate to... Again, ALICE SMITH IS A MUST SEE LIVE! I went 2 nights in a row and it did not get old. If offered, I would have went to any and all shows featuring the incomparable Alice Smith!
