Neil Finn

Born in Te Awamutu, New Zealand in 1958, singer and songwriter Neil Finn is most associated with being a member of the band Spit Enz and as the founder and frontman of Crowded House. With numerous hits over the course of his career, Finn is one of the most successful musicians to have hailed from New Zealand.Neil Finn learnt to play the piano at a fairly young age and, inspired by the likes of Neil Young and David Bowie, his interest in music grew substantially in the early ‘70s. Neil's elder brother Tim was one of the chief members of Split Enz, who were popular in Australia at the time, and in 1977 he asked Neil to join the band.

Although I've been a Crowded House fan from their first CD, it's never worked out for me to see them perform live in all those years. Even though the concert was simply Neil Finn solo, I just *had* to be there, and it was a wonderful evening of great music and Neil's charming wit. I'd give high marks just because Neil sang "Hole in the River," one of my favorite Crowded House tunes, and one I never expected to hear live. However, his eight-minute performance of "Silent House" (with ambient electric guitar effects) was simply jaw-dropping. If Neil comes to your town... run, don't walk to see him.

Trying desperately to "dream it's (NOT) over". Neil's voice takes me to a place where all is right in the world. Not to mention, he's unbelievably charming and witty.

A fantastic show by Neil and Sharon Finn. Even though most of us were hearing the songs for the first time (CD isn't out until September), the audience was completely involved in and appreciative of the music. Always enjoy seeing Neil in a small venue!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this show. I have been a long time Neil Finn fan and I listened to the first single from the album so I had some indication of the new music. We loved the show! The last two Crowded House albums had become formulaic and somewhat sterile. The Pajama Club has allowed Neil to get back to more experimental times with Crowded House and Split Enz. Get to this show if you can!

I really enjoyed the concert . The music is very different from the Crowded House and Finn Brothers that I am used to but very good. Neil is an extremely accomplished, talented musician and the rest of the band did a great job highlighting his talent. I would have loved to hear some old favorites but understand that this concert was not about the past but one of Neil's projects; I was more than happy to be a part of it.

Neil Finn just keeps getting better and better. The show was a good mix of well-known songs and songs that I have not heard him play live. Finn has the knack of playing off the audience and drawing energy. Thouroughly enjoyable evening.

We flew down from Seattle to see Neil Finns only USA Performance. Neil delivered as promised, this time he was a solo act. At first I thought to myself, "where is the band?". In the past we have seen Neil perform in the Seattle Area and have always loved his shows. His L.A. Performance brought another side of him to the table, and we ate it all up! We would love to see him perform in New Zealand, maybe next time......

And a pop god as well. Neil Finn played a lot of his solo material as well as some really old Split Enz material. But this true artist is always producing new material, and his rendition of Silent House from a recent (since they reformed in the 2000s) Crowded House album using only an electric guitar was truly, truly awesome. The set he did on the grand piano showed off his virtuoso keyboarding skill as well. If you haven't heard any Neil Finn or Crowded House and like impeccable musicianship, brilliant songwriting and the best male pop/rock voice around, I suggest you check it out! The El Rey is a great place to see a concert if you don't mind standing - we stood in the area right above the pit and could see everything. Nice small, intimate and classic venue.

Right up there with the Beatles in songwriting, Neil took us on an amazing journey through Split Enz, Crowded House and solo material. I normally wouldn't go see any solo performances where the artist is alone, but I knew Neil would be great... just not this great. Whether on guitar or piano, Neil delivered memorable performances throughout interspersed with his stand up, spot on, dialogue. What a wonderful night.

Tuesday's show was amazing, as always. Neil is a fantastic, old school performer--no fancy light shows, pyrotechnics, or theatrics needed, just great songs, voice, and personality. Neil played completely solo (until the encore), treating the audience to alt. versions of favorites and introducing at least 1 tune yet to appear anywhere. As always, requests were acknowledged and sometimes granted, including a classic Split Enz tune (Six Months in a Leaky Boat) penned by brother Tim: "Well, that's really Tim's song, but I think we WILL play it. Why shouldn't we [referring to him and us]?" If you've been to Neil Finn/Finn Brothers/Crowded House show, you know that he has a very intimate way of approaching shows... engaging in conversations with the audience, sharing the day's reflections on current events (Tuesday it was his pity for the poor Kiwi tourists that would suffer if the U.S. govt closes the Grand Canyon b/c can't agree on a budget.), getting the audience involved in the music, and telling humorous personal stories. The El Rey, a small, vintage setting, is a perfect venue for this kind of intimacy. At one point Neil asks if anyone can play three notes on the piano and, after a few hands go up, he says the first one up on stage gets to play along with him. A woman pops up on stage, he shows her the notes, demonstrates the timing, then starts the song. You can tell she's giddy just to be on stage w/Neil. She does great keeping rhythm with him--at one point he thanks her and says, "You can play a solo if you think you're up to it." She does. And it's very good. We all go crazy and they finish the song. "You all think she was a plant, don't you? She wasn't." There were a few issues with the sound, but these got resolved, and Neil seemed to enjoy experimenting with some of them for awhile (experimenting with music and noise is another recurrent element at Finn shows). For the encore, a shadowy figure accompanies Neil on piano--the lights eventually come up on Los Angeles' own Jon Brion. FYI: Note that this is predominantly a standing venue. There are some chairs along the side walls (maybe 20-30 on each side?) and some tables with chairs in the balcony (I didn't go up there, so I don't know if those are also GA or if they're VIP), but that's it. For the most part, I had a good view (and I'm not tall) and I didn't mind standing up, but there were a few times when I would have liked to sit down.

Neil Finn is the best pop singer/songwriter in the world today. Period. And the show at the El Rey Theatre on April 5, 2011 was proof of that. Drawing from his amazing career in such bands as Split Enz and Crowded House, as well as his own solo career, Neil once again showed his ability to transform and transfix an audience with his heartfelt, soul-baring lyrics coupled with his amazing sense of melody and harmony. I was in heaven. Matt Costa, not so much. Not bad, just not great. But Neil sets a very high standard that I have yet to see an opening act approach. I wish him well.

By far one of the most prolific songwriters...and to hear many of his fantastic songs played just by Neil himself was wonderful. The lyrics of the songs were so clear and thoughtful, you just listened and enjoyed it! I honestly believe his lyrics are equivalent to some of the best poetry, and accompanied by a greatly-talented musician to boot. I wish he could have played longer, so many great songs he didn't get a chance to play. I like how he took song requests and performed them perfectly...except for the one that he admitted he messed up AND he was bummed it was going to be on You Tube the next day.

Neil Finn never disappoints, which is why I'm going to the UK to see him 4 more times! He connected with his audience, told stories and yelled at security guards! Yay! Neil Finn is a master songwriter at the top of his game. He has assembled a fantastic band for this tour. He played songs from Split Enz, Crowded House, and his three solo albums. Neil Finn has been my favorite musician for years. I love his entire catalogue of songs, and frequently go back to listen to his early work. However, he never stands still or rests on his laurels. He continues to evolve as an artist and remains firmly ensconced in a position of relevance and influence in the music world. He is unafraid of new sounds and technology. He's able to assimilate technology and trends into new songs that are uniquely his. Moreover, he continues to restlessly innovate and write great songs. He is a gifted lyricist and a virtuosic musician. His onstage presence is affable and humorous. Artists like Neil Finn come along only once in an eon. I look forward to listening to his brilliant music and seeing his performances and for many years to come.

This is the second time that I attend a Neil Finn concert in San Francisco. The first time, he was playing as part of Crowded House. This second time was much better in all respects. The venue was excellent, that band was tightly integrated and the music selection was phenomenal. I was very impressed by how much is Neil an excellent performer as he is a composer. He is a great guitar and piano player and has a great voice. You can tell that he is having a great time performing. In some respects, he reminds me of Paul McCartney on how he connects with the audience through his performance. Neil is a very accomplished rock composer and, sadly, he is totally underrated in the US. His compositions are highly melodic and instantly enjoyable, even if you listen to them for the first time. I strongly recommend that you check him out.

Neil Finn put a rejuvinated spin on his new material and old classics at the Palace of Fine Arts show. The fresh young band added soulful dimensions and fiery grooves which enlivened Finn's presence onstage without the aid of his bandmates from Crowded House. Many Dizzy Heights selections were performed along with Enz, CH, Finn Bros. and solo material. Having seen CH and/or Finn live a few times, this show held me captive throughout either dancing in my seat to Locked Out or shedding a tear during the luminous rendition of Message To My Girl and the tender and rare Try Whistling This. If you have never seen Finn perform, GO!! You will not regret it and will in all likelihood be a fan for life!

The opening act was wonderful, but when Neil's band started up, I knew I was in for torture. The sound level was incredibly high. My bones were vibrating, even on the mellower songs. I had to keep my ears covered the whole time—and when I do that and the music and vocals are crystal clear, something is wrong with the volume. I've rarely had to wish for earplugs at large sit-down concerts, but I certainly did this time. It's a shame too, as the performance itself was really good. Well, the rest of the audience didn't seem to have trouble with it though, so this probably won't be an issue for you unless you have sensitive ears, or value your hearing.

Neil Finn played a wide range of songs from his catalogue tonight, ranging from classics from his Split Enz days to his most recent album Dizzy Heights. Highlights included Don't Deam It's Over and Message to My Girl arranged simply but beautifully on the piano, returning for an encore by running across the stage and sliding across the piano, and a rousing rendition of I Got You that had the entire crowd on its feet dancing. We were also treated to the presence of his dad by video and got to sing Happy Birthday to him. Neil Finn stands on the precipice, peering through sun-drenched clouds with a mix of fear and curiosity at the view of ominous waters below. Serving as both a metaphor and a description of the cover on Finn s 3rd solo release, Dizzy Heights, this surreal scene captures the essence of high risk: actions that push us to the brink of what we know and beckon us to leap into the unknown. This is a risk that Neil Finn chooses willingly, a stunning feat for this master songwriter, and the risk pays off here with an album that delivers on multiple levels. ‘Dive Bomber , the first official release from Finn s new album, reminds us that when poised on the precipice there s only one way down , yet in this song and throughout the record, Finn hovers gracefully between a dreamlike realm and all that is real and tangible. On Dizzy Heights, Finn pushes the bounds of expression on his most personal album to date. His inspiring and beautifully crafted lyrics reveal the full spectrum of intimacy by exploring a range of feelings, including lust (‘Dizzy Heights ), euphoria mixed with apprehension (‘Dive Bomber ), giddiness (‘Pony Ride ), loss (‘In my Blood ), longing (‘White Lies and Alibis ), admiration (‘Strange Friends ), compassion (‘Recluse ), and nostalgia (‘Lights of New York ). With a voice that resonates with sincerity, Finn moves us from heady romance through deep commitment. Throughout Dizzy Heights, Finn muses on love while making songs that seem to be written with only you in mind. Sonic risks abound in this collaborative production between Finn and producer Dave Fridmann of Tarbox Studios. Fridmann, known for his work with Flaming Lips, OK Go, Tame Impala, and Mercury Rev creates detailed sonic layers enhanced by analog alchemy. The Finn/Fridmann collaboration on Dizzy Heights is unique for creating surreal aural soundscapes built upon beautifully crafted songs replete with soaring melodies, dynamic chord changes and solid rhythm. As a result, these songs are as danceable as they are listenable. And like all great psychedelic pop, the cinematic scope of Dizzy Heights promises to take you down the rabbit hole for wondrous years to come. I've seen the magic of this man in person when he showcased Dizzy Heights during a mini-tour in Nov. 2013. This upcoming tour promises to be unforgettable! Lisa Hartjen Twitter @DorothiesAll 5Feb14

The Pajama Club's first US appearance at the Birchmere in VA received a fantastic reception from an enthusiastic crowd of Neil Finn / Crowded House / Split Enz fans. For an audience to react so positively to a full set of brand-new material speaks volumes about Pajama Club's chemistry, high energy and their collective ability to craft memorable songs from both obscure and accessible threads. What impressed me most about this performance was the equal contribution offered by each of the band members and the obvious respect that each of them have for each other; no egos on centerstage here!

I had the great pleasure of seeing Neil Finn on the Dizzy Heights Tour at Town Hall in New York earlier this month. After enduring with great calm and good nature some significant technical difficulties at the beginning of the show, he displayed once again why he is one of my favorite live performers. The new material benefits greatly from live performance and he was able to mine his old material to include songs from most of his recordings and musical incarnations. Then in his second encore his two sons and Sharon joined him onstage for another 6 or more tunes! All while skyping the encore to "Nana" in New Zealand on a laptop perched on one of the speakers. The whole audience bid her adieu when it was done. Neil seemed reluctant to leave the stage. And I wished it could have gone on forever. Thank you to Neil and family and band-mates for an incredible night of music. Beyond memorable.

We got a nice cross section of Neil's career, everything from Split Enz (I Got You and a couple of others) to Crowded House (Don't Dream Its Over and a few others) to some of my favorites from his solo album, Try Whistling This like Souvenir and She Will Have Her Way. Neil played a couple of acoustic versions with his son Elroy also on guitar. I'd already purchased Dizzy Heights on vinyl, so I knew some of the songs, like the title track, Impressions, Pony Ride and Flying In The Face Of Love. If you've ever wanted to see Neil, this is the tour to finally do it. The new album is as good as anything he's ever done. The band is tight. He has his wife and son in the band. Neil jokes around, enters walking across the piano and does some slides across it on his shoulder when he's switching back to guitar. This was one of the better shows I've seen in a while. Favorite moment: When Neil and company came back for the encore, a bunch of people toward the front started yelling out requests. Apparently they all weren't hits. He said he'd intended playing a bunch of hits, but decided to poll the audience to see what we wanted. There was a louder cheer for "not hits" so he said he'd play Pony Ride instead from the new album, which is one of my favorites off it. What a treat! They had vinyl copies of Dizzy Heights and the warm up band's album available at the swag table. They were only $20, same as on line. The cd was $15 and the vinyl comes with a download card. A no brainer here. Vinyl really is back!

Great show - Neil played for 2 1/2 hours straight. Played a fantastic mix of Split Enz, Crowded House, Finn Brothers, Pajama Club, and of course his solo work including the new album... Everything you could imagine and still a few surprises as well. A Silent House duo with his son was a highlight for me. Just fantastic! Fall at Your Feet, and Four Seasons were equally done well, with a lot of crowd participation, and Don't Dream It's Over on piano was nicely done too. I especially liked the quieter stuff on the piano, and guitar. Made the show intimate. But the band also really rocked out on a bunch of classics. On Locked Out the music played a bit too loud, but overall everything was masterful - just great. Definitely go and see this show. And, don't wait too long to come back again Neil!!

History may never repeat, but Neil Finn never disappoints me. He had a crack band that was at home playing Neil's solo stuff as well as Crowded House and even Split Enz stuff. I've seen Crowded House several times and it was a rarity to do any Split Enz songs. Even technical glitches couldn't get him down. Just plug him into the amp and let him go. I think his vocals were probably the best I have heard. It became a family affair when his sons Liam and Elroy as well as his wife, Sharon, all united and serenaded Neil's mom via Skype. It was a great evening with a fantastic retrospective of Neil's career.

Neil was in great voice, the band was amazing. He played not only songs from his solo career but he liberally did some Crowded House and even Split Enz songs. The energy level was there throughout, and Neil looked like he was having fun, as we all were.

I have been a Neil Finn, Tim Finn, Crowded House, Split Enz fan for a long time. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert. There were some technical difficulties with the amp but Neil just carried on smoothly like a late night talk show host. He is charasmatic and funny and his voice is amazing. My young son was was surprised to enjoy the concert so much as I had described him as a folky rock artist and he expected to be bored. It was definitely and enjoyable night, made more so by the addition of his sons and a skype visit by his mom.

Neil played for 2.5 hours, first of all. He was great, as usual, and the band was spot on! My husband and I were very impressed. The setlist was quite career-spanning, featuring songs from the Enz, Crowded House, Finn Brothers, and Neil's solo work. He played some songs alone, only with backup vocals, and switched between piano and guitar. He was funny, and quite the showman! It was just a wonderful, unforgettable experience.

Amidst technical problems with his guitar effects pedal board and poor placement of the piano(the view of Neil was blocked for a section of the audience) he succesfully persevered through it while being funny, engaging, and professional. He actually helped move the piano himself so that the whole audience would be able to see him! His voice was crystal clear and stellar for the whole performance. Whether you are a fan of Neil's from his Split Enz days, Crowded House, Pajama Club, solo career or his work with his brother Tim, you won't be dissapointed. The set was more than two hours long with two encores and it was comprised of songs from every era of his prolific career. The band featuring his wife Sharon on bass was tight and added great harmonies. For a special treat, he brought out his sons Liam (guitar/vocals) and Elroy (drums/vocals) to play with him on the second encore which featured "Four Seasons in One Day" and Liam's "Fire in the Belly". Neil closed the show by himself on acoustic with a memorable performance of "Better Be Home Soon". If you are a Finn fan and he comes to a town near to you, do yourself a favor and don't miss it!

I'm a long time Crowded House, Finn Brothers, Neil Finn solo fan. Over the years I've loved every one of Neil's live outings in whatever configuration. But this one topped them all. Neil delighted us with 2 1/2 hours of his wonderfully crafted songs, funny banter, and impronmptu family reunion on stage (including who I assume was his mom via skype!). Two encores are commonplace in Europe but I have rarely seen them here in the States and on Tuesday Neil treated us to 2 long ones, pulling out some of his best songs of the night. It seemed Neil just wanted to keep playing but had to stop to relieve the stage crew. While Dizzy Heights has not overwhelmed me, the tunes really came to life on stage. The band was made up of his wife Sharon on bass and a young generation of top guns who both rocked and brought out the beauty of Neil's quiter tunes. But ultimately the night belonged to Neil who continues to delight us with his amazing songcraft, unique voice, great instrumental chops and joy of making music.

This was an amazing performance at an amazing venue. Neil outdid himself, playing 2.5 hours and covered everything from Crowded House, Split Enz, Finn Bros. to his old and newest solo works. It was amazing!

After a 35-year career with Split Enz, Crowded House, two Finn Brothers albums and 3 solo albums, Neil is better than ever. The new music is fresh, intriguing, melodic and breaks new ground for him (several songs also rock - Pony Ride live was incredible!). What a treat to see Sharon (his wife of forever) on stage and playing bass. In this show, Neil covered all the bases, from all of the periods cited above. He is a total professional, singing Message To My Girl like with all his soul like it was the first time he had ever sung it. My only regret is that it's so hard to cover such an enormous catalog of songs. Personally, I'd prefer to hear more obscurities than top 10 hits, but I understand why artists must cover their hits.

Great show that really showcased Neil Finn's incredible songwriting skill over the last 30 years. He's truly multi-talented - fantastic songs sung with an amazing voice while bouncing between piano and guitar. This particular night really displayed his warm and funny personality. His sons and wife all played with him, and his parent's in-law said hello via Skype.

Neil Finn was in top form . The quality of his voice and the talent of his band really shined. He performed a wide range of his songs from his Split Enz days to this year's Dizzy Heights and everything in between. Most of all, his connection to the audience through a very enthusiastic performance (in spite of technical difficulties) made this a show to remember.

PHENOMENAL! First time seeing Neil Finn and was not disappointed! He played his solo as well as Crowded House tunes. He was very enthusiastic and had an amazing rapport with the audience. His backup band was the same way. The evening never seemed to end (not that we wanted it to!) with him playing continuously for over two and a half hours!! Had a fabulous time from start to finish!

Neil was in good spirits and was funny as usual. The band was tight and they played a pretty good mix of the old and new.My personal highlight was Neil singing alone at the piano doing "Message to my girl"

The grand and opulent Orpheum Theater in downtown LA provided an ideal venue for a pared down acoutic trio-version of Midlake as they mainly played cuts from their beautiful new album, 'Antiphon'. Gratefully, the crowd paid rapt attention as they settled in during the set and gave these deserving artists their attention and appreciation. Neil Finn, as always, was the consumate professional and took to the mic on his second song. His excellent band ran thru delightful Split Enz and Crowded House classics, as well as liberal selections from his solo catalog, including "Sinner" {my personal favorite!}, "'She Will Have Her Way", and "Loose Tongue". He was endearing and fully engaged with the crowd throughout the evening, and playfully encouraged fans who had entered the 'off limits" orchestra pit to ignore the security staff pleas and instead just 'party the night away'! A great artist delivered a great evening of great music with humor and wit...what more can you possibly ask for???

I've seen Neil Finn many times in many venues over the past 25 years, and this was another wonderful show. The palace of fine arts in San Francisco is an awesome venue, with wonderful acoustics, and a capacity of only 1,000.

This was one of my top 5 performances ever seen! I have been a fan for many years and seen Neil with different bands and solo. The venue along with the atmosphere with the audience made this a very special night! I would not miss any performance he does in the future!

It's too bad this tour had so few American dates. I travelled from Detroit to see the show, (I have family in Vegas and L.A. so I made my plans around seeing Mr. Finn). It was 100% worth the trip. Neil sampled the best of his catalog including "I Got You" and a great rendition of "Message To My Girl" from the Split Enz days. There were stellar Crowded House tunes including "Distant Sun," "Weather With You" and "Love This Life" and many solo stand-outs, "She Will Have Her Way" was particularly good. Plus a lot from his solid new album. Other bonuses were a surpise mini Crowded House reunion with Mark Hart for a few songs, Neil mixing it up with the venue about orchestra pit policy and Neil rippng his paints getting out of said pit. A great night of almost 2 1/2 hours of great music.

Not enough people know about the genius of Neil Finn. He's got the songwriting acumen of Neil Young, and the Beatles, a sense of melody and harmony like no other, has a killer voice, is a great guitar and piano player, and is one of my top 5 performers to see live…the guy has it all as well as a great sense of humor. He can be mellow and sensitive or raw and rocking'. Do yourself a favor and go see him anytime you have the chance! Buy these 2 live DVDs Crowded House's "Farewell To The World" and his solo "7Worlds Collide"…you will be amazed ! P.S. forgot to mention the amazing light show and 3D ever changing, swirling psychedelic back drop that was visually jaw dropping!
