From beginning to end, this show wowed everyone. So much beautiful music poured forth from these two! Their harmonies and the way they played together soared like birds. They had a great patter between songs - funny but not too long - and they played and played and played! I loved every minute of it!

Seeing Dave and Gillian at thier 'home' venue was nothing less than perfect. The theatre was nearly packed full, and the experience was practically interactive at points. There were multiple encores and standing ovations, Dave's rift's were getting cheers, and they had the audience singing with them on I'll Fly Away.

This was in a small theater of 1000 seats. The stage was Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings and I cannot overstate the talent and ability. There was two sets and two encores for a total length of about 2.5 hours. Both sets involved her older music and newest music from "Harrow." Dave Rawlings blows your hair back with the solos and supporting guitar. The audience was very involved and responsive making for a rousing time. I highly recommend this concert and will wait with GREAT anticipation for the next time they come around. Second encore was a cover of White Rabbit that is far better rendition than any others. One song from Down from the Mountain.

The No Depression festival caught my attention because the legendary Iron and Wine was set to play, this alone was worth the money. What I didn't expect was to enjoy, as much a s i did, the rest of the performances during the day. Each and every band was amazing. Each somehow surpassing the previous. The eclectic vibe was relaxing and the company great. With a comfortable ambiance similar to the big festivals like Sasquatch at the Gorge amphitheater, the sun was welcomed by all and everyone was happy just relaxing in the grass with fellow music lovers.

I showed up to see Gillian Welch at 8:45pm. Due to a scheduling conflict, I wasn't able to see the earlier bands, but my main reason for buying a ticket was to hear Gillian and David sing. They were both amazing. Her voice is so strong, the harmony so great. And the girl can tell a story! So relaxed on stage. Just the two of them filled the night with great music. No need for anything more than their voices and guitars. I would love to see her again. I hope she comes back soon to Seattle, but if not, I will be traveling to hear her sing again.

Marymoor park is beautiful, the perfect setting for alt-country performances, with a view of the forest through the stage and the high trees surrounding the grassy seating area. Even at Marymoor nine hours seemed like too much alt-country to me, but I came at 5 for Jesse Sykes, Iron & Wine, and Gillian Welch. They were well worth the ticket price alone. It would always be possible to leave the festival to walk around Marymoor for a break too. The Screwtopians were terrible and painfully over-amplified, but at least they made Sam Beam's set stand out even more by contrast.

I had so much fun at the event! Its outside so you can sit where ever you want , and the people are so relaxed. For your favorite artist you can go up right next to the stage. I went for Iron and Wine ( Sam Beam) and he was beyond phenomenal!!! I didn't want his set to end! The show case of local artists was really good and the main one's were just the best of the crop. I had fun watching everyone's act. The event was really well planned and I most definitely am going back next year. My only advice would be bring a blanket or a chair to sit on,sunscreen and lots of water! and pack some food because the food is a bit pricey at the event, but that's to be expected at any event. GO TO THIS EVENT!

I had a really good time and particularly enjoyed Gillian Welch, Jessica Lea Mayfield and the local set. At $60, though, it's the second most expensive concert / single-day festival I've ever been to. Phew!

The festival was much smaller than I expected, but I guess that's what happens when the event is run in the name of a defunct magazine. I wasn't there for the entire day, I arrived about halfway into Jessica Lee Mayfield's set (who was amazing), and though I thought Justin Townes Earle had a charming presence and some fun tunes, his set was ultimately forgettable. Jesse Sykes is SO much better with the Sweet Hereafter (I saw her earlier in the week without her band), and I even got to chat for a second with Phil Wandscher (her guitarist) about his gear. Patterson Hood and the Screwtopians were very tight and played well, but the sound engineer doubled the volume for their set, to the point of needing to improvise some earplugs out of toilet paper. (You would think at an outdoor music festival some vendor would sell earplugs, but 'fraid not.) Sam Beam was surprisingly fun, mixing his dark soulful songs with silly banter about how unprepared he was. And, of course, Ms. Welch and Mr. Rawlings were superb. Funny how the quietest act all day turned out to be the headliners. But their energy and performance blew everybody else out of the water, and they ended it all with an encore of "Jackson" impersonating Johnny and June Carter Cash, and then a huge sing-along of "I'll Fly Away" that seemed to take even them aback.

This was by far the best concert I have ever been to. While the truth was, I was really only there to see three of the bands, I have to say, the other bands were pretty awesome as well. Zee Avi was amazing, as was Jesse Townes Earl, and the other guy (who I can't remember). Now, down to the meat and potatoes. Patterson Hood of the Drive By Truckers was outstanding. I loved his music before, but this just added a whole new dimension to it. Sam Beam of Iron and Wine also performed, and while his set was shorter than I would have liked to see, it was nothing less then amazing. Absolutely stunning. I would go again to only see Sam Beam again any day. Now, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Both beautiful musicians with loads of talent. The way that they played together and reacted to each other was simply amazing. I mean, the music that these to make brings tears to my eyes because it is so good. I loved every minute of it. Definitely am going to go next year

Gillian Welch was fantastic, but her set was too short for the 8 hour wait. The early bands, including all the the Revue were great, but the middle bands were loud, the wrong genre, and an ordeal. Iron & Wine was good but monotonous: a beautiful voice but the cadence of all his songs is almost identical.

To get this caliber of featured entertainers in the Marymoor Park setting was a fantastic experience. The range of groups from pretty much country to some wild electric fingering, and from clear to smoky voices gave an assortment to liven up everyone's day. No Boredom and No Depression.

I came for the whole day (1-10PM!), even though I had never heard the opening acts, which, while well-introduced by the KEXP MC, were generally non-descript and/or self indulgent. Exception: Justin Towes Earl, who played a good smattering of attidunial authentic country. The rest seemed to be quoting roots music for their own, largely unremarkable guitar work. The Revue portion of the vent was promising, but with the exception of Earl, the opening acts required more beer than I could stomach. And then, in between the acts and next to the concessions area, the Tallboys were performing their unabashed and greatly requited love for the idiom as buskers, attracting a well-deserved, always growing crowd for their work. They are fabulous, and reminded me of why I had come. Iron & Wine is always great to hear, but a smaller venue (he had just played the Triple Door) is more effective, And Gillian Welch demonstrated why she always works best with Dave Rawlings. While their set was solid and remarkable artistry, it was unremarkable for her choices. An artist who takes this long between material releases ("I know, I know" she sighed, when she announced that she's been recording and someone shouted "About time!") should assume that we are very familiar with her past work and use those numbers only as a platform to try some new work on. David Rawlings work, even on the old Welch chestnut Wanna Sing that Rock n Roll was truly amazing, and Welch is a real presence through her songwriting and the little bit of patter she allowed herself to have. They were both all about the music, and it showed to great advantage. That said, I'd go again to the No Depression Music Festival (this was the first one here), but I'd audition the opening acts and time my entrance accordingly

The sound was not loud enough and should have sounded so much better since it was at the Atlanta Symphony Hall. Love Gillian Welch, but tickets were misleading about playing with the Atlanta symphony (they did not play with the symphony). I would not go to this venue again. Very disappointing.

Gillian and her partner do a fantastic job blending some of my favorite music genres! The reason I'm rating this concert fair is because there was no energy at all on the stage. It seemed very repetitive and trite at most times. The audience had far more enthusiasm for the music than the actual performers. While their style lends itself to be mellow, laid back, and chilled, they really need to find time to engage their audience.

Sparse in presentation, unforgettable performance by a duo of complex mature performers. Gillian's voice was pure, her heart bared for all to see in the hallowed Beacon Theatre. No acoustic guitarist extracts the sweet yet stirring sound from that archtop like Dave. A magnificent performance by an artist at the zenith of his craft. Despite the mournful dirges Gillian pens, the thoughtful, soul bearing performace was truly special. They soon had us dancing in the ailes and finished with a six song encore. Perfect.

Birthdays all around....but the SOUND! what can be said about the band - GILLIAN WELCH - that does not sound repetative & sterile....all i know is that their breath & writing are just the cure i need when the blues take me down to the brink....Their music is essential medicine for those who are not hard of hearing....those who collect ROGER MILLER LPS....those who dress better than their pears.....but it's also the dry humor...like a late night show that seems to have been filmed in some no-where-town....some lucky accident. This night there were tears, smiles, breaks & bells. what more can you ask for on the penultimate day of the year?

With no opening act, the show was simply Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings on stage with acoustic guitars, a banjo and a table. They played for 2+ truly captivating hours. The show was a feast of gorgeous harmonies punctuated by brilliant, inspired guitar picking by Dave. Belying their years of collaboration, they sing and play together seamlessly. Gill and Dave have an easy-going stage presence engaging in light banter with the crowd and they truly seemed to enjoy performing. The Hoyt Sherman is a perfect venue for them and they acknowledged that fact by saying it made their song selection more daring because they could hear themselves play so clearly. A wonderful show of musicianship and acoustic artistry.

Fabulous. First time I had seen her, much better than I expected. She and Dave Rawlings work together perfectly, wonderful harmonizing, best guitar accompanist in the business. On her albums I'd had only noticed him stepping out for a solo on the amazing Revelator, but in concert he did a lot of long solo licks in a style unlike anybody else and which no one can duplicate,Tone of the concert was really fun and positive, something I would not have expected based on listening to her albums, which seem pretty somber. Very good sound set up, heard every note, every harmony.

We arrived in time to see Jessica Lee Mayfield's set, and she did not disappoint. Her songs were soulful and intriguing. I enjoyed her backing band and the way they changed up tempo and intensity, moving from solo acoustic to drums and upright bass to drums and electric guitar. Justin Townes Earl was pure unadultrated honky-tonk and his multi-instrumentalist was incredible, especially on harmonica. Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter always play inspired songs. They were a little less dynamic this afternoon, but I attribute that to the fact that they played when the sun was still pretty hot and the stage was not completely shaded. Patterson Hood and the Screwtopians came out of the shoot playing crisp clean alt-country the way it was meant to be played, loud and passionately. The band seemed to be having a great time, as they played through most of the songs from his new album. Patterson was very gracious with his band-mates, yielding lead vocal duties twice during the set. Sam Beam of Iron and Wine looked as if he was sitting on a friend's front porch and not standing alone with a guitar in front of several thousand excited fans. He utilized silences and quiet moments in the songs to emphasize the lyrics. He flubbed chords a few times, but no one cared, because he writes such great songs and performs them so well. Finally, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings took the stage at about 8:45 p.m. They had to tell the guy on the sound board to turn the guitars up in the mains, but from where I was standing, about 20 feet away, it was one of the most flawless sets of music I've witnessed in some 30+ years of attending live events. The crowd exploded between songs, Gillian and David delved deeply into the sonic territory that only the two of them can create. I was most impressed this time by Ms. Welch's guitar playing. Even though David Rawlings does all of the fancy fret work, its her steady rhythm guitar that keeps it all together.

One of the best concerts I have ever seen! No opening act, thankfully. They came out and played the entirety of The Harrow and the Harvest...to celebrate the new vinyl pressing of the 2011 great collection. Wow! They were in great form, good spirits, and Gillian seem touched when we all sang her Happy Birthday. Dave was...well, there aren't really words for how talented he is, is there? They popped off stage for 20 minutes and came back for another full set of perfect renditions of their own songs and some covers. They sang everything I wanted to hear and more. Multiple encores. Everytime I see Gil and Rawlings live I am in a place that no other artist has taken me or can take me except for Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead. They are so in sync with each other in every way on stage and with the audience. Gil was in great voice and great spirits as she talked quite a bit about many things. She danced, slapped her leg, played spirited guitar and sang her heart out as she always does. Rawlings is and was that night just a master of his craft. In my opinion he is the top guitarist playing these days and sadly not many people even know who he is. From the first notes of Scarlet Town to the 2nd encore Jackson he was flawless. The other thing about Rawlings is that he has a big smile on his face the entire time and it's infectious with both Gil and the audience. They played all of Harrow and then cam back and played a great choice of songs. Gil dedicated EPB to Tom Petty because I guess he was a huge Elvis fan. I will be seeing The Machine in March which in some ways is a better time but these two are very very special. If you are "thinking" about seeing them......stop thinking and GO!!!!!!

I went to both the San Diego and Los Angeles shows for this tour. The evening at the Balboa Theater was a perfect venue for this duo. The Orpheum seemed slightly too large and swallowed them up a bit (still, a great show) I love the chemistry between these two and Dave Rawling's guitar solos, especially during Revelator, were wriggle-in-your-seat-with-excitement spectacular! I will not be able to find words to describe how this show woke up something in my heart. It was like I was electrocuted in row H. I have not been the same since, I was doing fine before I went, bought a single seat in row F, enjoyed the presentation of the album from beginning to end and the musicianship was even higher than I expected. Thoroughly impressed, then you took a break, odd I thought. But OK. I headed up to met another fan I had met concerning tickets. We met, hug hello and then it hit me, like a holy water shower and lightning strike to follow. If you don't get what I am saying, that's cool. I am 50 years old and would not have known until that moment myself. Like I said, the musicianship was incredible and inspiring.I will order some vinyl copies to remember it by. It was difficult to understand the words she was singing at times. The crowd as a whole seemed to enjoy it.

The best concert I have ever attended. 6 encores. Haunting music, witty quips, unforgettable guitar playing.

I love her music and was hoping a famous singer might come out and sing with her, I also think they'd be more fun live if they added some others players.

Whether performing as a duo as Gillian Welch or with a full band as David Rawlings Machine, Welch and Rawlings consistently give audiences delightful shows, seeming to enjoy themselves as much as ticketholders. In the first set, they played all the songs on The Harrow and the Harvest, an older album recently released on vinyl--the first printing sold out except for copies held for the event. After a brief break they returned and sang more of their fans' favorites. Sharp-eyed fans might have caught sight of other well-known Americana artists in the audience, including John Paul White and Jason Isbell.

My wife is a big fan; I, however, was unfamiliar with Gillian Welch other than from movie soundtracks. Now, I am a fan. The technical skill was admirable; Dave and Gillian played as if they were one person. Also, they played about 30 songs. We look forward to a return visit to Atlanta. I give the overall rating only 3 stars because in spite of the excellent performance it was greatly diminished by the sound system. There was feedback from the speakers for most of the concert and it became quite irritating. Without the feedback I would score it 5 stars.

It just seems like they welcome you into their living room to share beautiful, haunting stories and a subtle joke or two to ease the tension in between murder ballads. They are amazing in the studio, crafting beautiful melodies and harmonies together for about 25 years now, but Dave can really take off live! You get the feeling he could shred with Eddie Van Halen if the muse took him there, but his adventurous phrasing and incredible tone take that old guitar to amazing places without feeling at all self-serving. I've never seen someone hold a crowd so effortlessly as Gill. Just beautiful stuff from top to bottom!

As always was satisfied immensely with Gillian and Dave's performance. Their chemistry is truly palpable. Between Dave's fine picking and Gillian's amazing vocals, it was a great live music experience. Of course, great song selection all around.

Gillian Welch with David Rawlings at the Carolina Theater in Durham N.C. proved one thing - Gillian is a guaranteed great show!!! I've seen the duo five times now and every show has been incredible. Gillian and David seem to thoroughly enjoy performing to gether and that joy shines through - ironic in that most of their songs are about murder and sadness. Every one of their concerts seems to have a magic moment or twenty, and this show on Monday night 4/28 seemed to have at least one magic moment in each song. There were a few songs I would have liked to hear that weren't played, but the songs they selected seemed to be 'dead on'... so I left the auditorium totally satisfied. The harmonies were exquisite as always and David Rawlings' playing just seems to get better and better. There's not many guarantees out then on the concert circuit these days but I believe Gillian and David have proven they are the real deal in that regard.

The rich interplay between Gillian and Dave brings alive all the songs one knows and loves from recordings. Wonderfully varied material. Excellent rapport with the audience. Just an outstanding evening of Gillian Welch favorites.

Gillian and David are a couple of brilliant musicians who always put on a good show. I want to call special attention to David's solo on Time (the revelator). It was as good an acoustic guitar solo as I have ever heard. He is so inventive! I will see them over and over! Love to see them and the Civil Wars together!

Beautiful harmonies, beautiful playing, friendly artist, but unfortunately the theatre trod on all that. No seats, no air conditioning, not even a fan for the artists! Many fans left early due to the horrid conditions. Hopefully she will come back soon! This would have been a 5 star event if not for the venue.

Gillian and Dave were great, as they are every time I have seen them. They are so in sync with each other and their music sounds wonderful. They are a wonderful example of real musicians. They don't need all the frills to make a great show. I love seeing them play, real talent! Love the venue too.

I was absolutely blown away! Expected a sweet little serenade and got an" A " list stellar performance. The amount of music that came out of 2 slight frames and 2 acoustic instruments was unbelievable. Would consider it a privilege to see that performance everyday, over and over. Really can not say enough about how impressed we were! Thank you for a wonderful experience! Great venue as well, comfortable and intimate, nice choice.

I thought I knew what I was getting into, but my expectations were blown away. The chemistry and level of communication displayed on stage by Welch and Rawlings is astounding. Welch was in top form and her songs are of course the reason to attend. But seeing Dave Rawlings bob and weave his virtuosic, insightful and revelatory leads through her steady strumming was indescribeable. On the albums, their guitars blend together and I hadn't put much thought into extracting exactly what Dave played versus Gillian. The concert setting allows you to fully comprehend what Rawlings has done with Gillian's beautiful songs, and it's what elevates it to the stratosphere versus Gillian as a standalone woman and guitar.

Gillian Welch and David Rawlings played an outstanding show at the Buffalo Center for the Arts. Their singing and playing exceeded all expectations. If you like acoustic music, and especially if you appreciate music with Appalachian folk roots, this is the music for you! The songs are fantastic, their voices make gorgeous harmony, and both play their instruments superbly. David Rawlings is a real virtuoso on guitar!

Outstanding performance by the reigning queen and king of americana/folk music. Drawing from their entire catalogue and performing against a remarkably spartan stage set, G&D kept a well-short of capacity yet very enthusiastic audience mesmerized for 2 and a half hours. catch them if you can. you will never hear two more perfectly matched voices nor a more pristine live sound than these two.

I would highly recommend seizing the opportunity to experience seeing 2 of the the most gifted songwriters and musicians of our time live. They are truly masters of their craft. David Rawlings' guitar work was simply stunning to not only hear, but to watch. He coaxes his guitar to sing in a voice all it's own, as if joining a 3rd artist to the duo. I don't think that I can accurately express Gillian's singing - exquisite doesn't quite do it justice. From soft and sultry, to mountain music twang, to belting out "White Rabbit" like a rocker for her finale - her voice carried all of us in the audience on a lovely ride through time and lifetimes. I am a new but now devoted fan, and will be hoping to see her return to our fair Queen City of Buffalo one day soon.

I remember seeing Gillian Welch/David Rawlings many years ago at Tralf in Buffalo. They were amazing then. Each has have evolved yet remained true to their music and old time/traditional/acoustic sound. Vocal and instrumental mics are problematic and not for those who don't want the best for the audience's ears.

Gillian Welch was very entertaining. Her interactions with the audience were brief but fun. The music was awesome and David Rawlings is an amazing guitarist. If you like their music they are well worth seeing live. The University of Buffalo Center For the Arts is the best music theater I have been to in Western New York State. State of the art sound with comfortable seating and a fairly priced ticket.

This was the second show I saw on this tour (I saw them at the Beacon in NYC a few months ago). When they play, Dave and Gillian are like two parts of the same person -- an amazing chemistry. And Dave Rawlings is one of the best guitar players around. We traveled up to Buffalo, especially. It was a great treat!

The recent Gillian Welch concert at The Majestic theater in Dallas was a real treat for me after being a fan for over 10 years and never having the chance to see her play live. Of course, any fan of Ms. Welch will know that her musical partner, David Rawlings is a master of nuance and technique (he studied at Berklee College of Music) particularly when soloing on his1935 Epiphone Olympic guitar. The engaging banter between Welch, Rawlings and the enthusiastic audience added to the feeling of an old time bluegrass jam session far removed from the pavement and skyscrapers of Dallas. The stage setting was simple: a table with 2 glasses of water and two microphone stands. With only that, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings electrified the audience with an all acoustic set that brought out the heart and soul of Ms.Welch's tapestry of songs.

Love bluegrass in general, and Gillian Welch proves why. The intimate outdoor venue suited her simple approach and the acoustics really showcased both her voice and David's spectacular guitar playing. So glad we went. One of my favorite concerts ever. Our only disappointment was not hearing Annabelle.
