Belle & Sebastian

Belle & Sebastian

Belle and Sebastian are a Glaswegian indie band, known for their wistful, intellectual lyrics and melodic style and often compared to musicians such as Nick Drake and bands such as The Smiths. Many believe that they are the definitive sound of modern indie folk in Scotland. They formed in 1996, taking their name from the French children's book, Belle et S?bastien. Their sound is considered to be unusual and distinctive, and it has inspired a loyal following, although the band has never sought widespread commercial success and has in fact often shunned excess media coverage.

Such a special & unique experience! My partner Eric & I got to dance on stage with B&S for the entire show! We answered a tweet looking for 50 fans to dance with the band. We thought it might be for 1 number. It ended up we had 8 or 9 choreographed numbers. Our choreographer Kristina Rodrigues was amazing! She taught 50 non dancers how to dance. She made us look so good. It was such an incredible opportunity. Thanks to everyone at the Berkeley Greek Theatre for making us so comfortable. It is my favorite outdoor venue in all of the Bay Area!

After waiting 4 years for Belle and Sebastian to tour again I was so excited to see them perform all of my favorite songs from past albums and new songs from their upcoming album,Belle And Sebastian Write About Love. They opened with the new song I Want The World to Stop which was brilliant. As a group they shine and are as good live as they are on their records. You can see how much they enjoy and appreciate their fans. They seem really happy to be on stage. They are great at engaging the audience. There is certainly a feeling of intimacy which is quite an accomplishment when your standing amongst 5,000+ fans. Most of the musicians play multiple instruments so there is a lot of musicality. Besides the usual guitars, bass, drums and keyboards you'd expect from most bands they also play flute, violins, cello, trumpet, harmonica, even recorders adding a wonderful depth to their songs. They are the most tuneful band I have ever heard and best of all they "rock", making for an exciting show.

This was the most amazing concert! Belle put on a wonderfully perfect show, making hilarious side comments in between songs and connecting with their audience. I feel like I love my favorite band on a more personal basis now, after having seen them. They all had good spirits. How lovely was the background of the city lights and water, with perfect weather I thought - the wind added effect, and the fog rising over the buildings behind us was very cool looking. Anyways, this is the coolest venue I've ever been to... Cheers

I had bought tickets to this show a couple of months ago, as I have been a huge B&S fan for years now, and never had the opportunity to see them live. I remember a cartoon when I was a kid called Belle and Sebastian, about a boy and his dog in the French Pyrenees Mountains, so when I heard of a band by the same name, I immediately gravitated toward them. I, like everyone else, was expecting a monsoon to begin at any moment, but it never did. Teenage Fanclub opened, I am not familiar with them, but a very interesting thing happened during their performance. I noticed Stuart Murdoch walking amongst the crowd, eating an apple. I of course approached him, let him know how big of a fan I am, and told him my recollections of the cartoon from my childhood. He seemed friendly enough, and then I asked him if they had a setlist prepared, he said yes, but asked if I had a request. I was blown away by his friendly, sincere nature, and requested that he play one of three songs, I listed "Your Cover's Blown", "We Rule The School", and "The State That I am In" He said he'd do one of them. I offered to buy him a beer, forgetting that he is allergic to alcohol, he declined my offer, and I once again told him how much I admired him, and we went our separate ways. A short while later they began their set, with some material from the new album, and then went into some of the classics. After 9 songs, Stuart said that due to a special request, they were going to play a song, and they immediately went into "We Rule The School", I was ecstatic, they performed it so well, and the audience went wild for it also. I am so glad that I attended this concert, it was just a magical night with the rain holding off, and the tumultuous wind blowing in all directions, and the beautiful sounds of Belle & Sebastian filling our ears.

To start, the scene was hard to get over...New York City skyline at nighttime across the river to the back, and Belle & Sebastian to your front. I'm so thrilled they finally were able to come to the States. I'm a fan of B&S, but I know many people were a little disappointed by their live performances. So I was "ready to be heartbroken". Well, I really had no reason for that. The concert was perfect. They enjoyed singing and talked to the public and interacted and danced and had fun and sang twenty beautiful songs, including "The loneliness of a middle distance runner" that is one of my favorite B-sides.

Undeniably brilliant and certainly the best concert I can remember attending. B&S only get better with age and the few teasers we got of their new album suggests even more brilliance to follow. Hope they do not wait another four damn years to come back to the East Coast.

Radio City Music Hall was spectacular, but the show was just plain BRILLIANT! Opened with Nobody's Empire, which is by far my favorite of the new album, and then kept going. They played 2 of my favorites - Boy With the Arab Strap and Judy and the Dream of Horses - but the highlight for me (because I've never heard them perform it live) was Lazy Line Painter Jane! Now, maybe those who are just getting to know their music wouldn't have had such a great time as me, but for a long time fan it was fantastic!

I hadn't seen Belle and Sebastian for well over ten years and had lost track of their albums, growing up and having different interests. However, an old friend invited me to this show and I decided to give it a shot. The band was in great form, the song selection was excellent and the banter with the audience was superb. A good mix of new material and classics, very well paced and with a ton of people on stage including string players and a bunch of fans who got to be on stage for the whole show doing coordinated dances. Overall it was a blast and my interest in the group has been rejuvenated. If you are on the fence, this would be a good time/tour to see them.

Belle and Sebastian produced an amazing show at the House of Blues. They played a range of songs from throughout their entire career and reproduced them perfectly. Belle & Sebastian were just as darling, funny and talented as I'd hoped they would be. Typhoon was the perfect opener for them -- both bands even had 12 people on stage! B&S played a wonderful variety of tracks both old and new (although I wish they'd played Step Into My Office, Baby). I also thought they would have whipped out the title track of their new album, but alas they did not. Their banter about Portland was of course well-received. They even hilariously and good-naturedly pulled up a bunch of people from the audience to dance on stage with them. All around a perfect event!

I was so pumped to see Belle & Sebastian in concert, and glad to see that the show was sold out. They are one of my faves! Overall, I really enjoyed the show - especially fans dancing around on stage, the freebies B&S gave some fans for their brave moves on the stage (how thoughtful!), and Stuart Murdoch dancing around on stage as he sang. I was hoping they would play more from their new album, Write About Love, but they've done so many songs I guess they couldn't play them all. The sound was a little patchy throughout the show, but B&S kept the momentum going. Bottom line: I'd see them again, maybe in a smaller venue, and would recommend the show to anyone.

Belle & Sebastian have done more or less the same show for the last 15 years\u2014that s not a complaint, just a fact. So I went with expectations\u2014but this time around they changed it up! I was a little sad. It seems like the end of an era, but they were great as usual. So much fun. Even without the Arab Strap stage dancers. They didn t skip the stage dancing, just did it to a different song. It didn t have quite as much joie de vivre as usual but then again neither do I.

I ve always wanted to see them play and they ve definitely still got it! I would have liked to see more from Isobel (she sang one song, but did play multiple instruments). But Stuart s energy made up for it in spades. He was hilarious and Stevie was an excellent vocal partner and they really played off each other well. There were a few songs I really wish they d played, by with such a huge catalog, there will always be a few things you ll wish they d played. This was such an outstanding show. I've never seen a band request the audience to come up on stage and dance! It was fantastic. The band was tight and every song delivered with the happy light atmosphere that you would expect. When you leave, you will feel better having seen them. Though - I would like to see them play a smaller venue, maybe multiple shows; as the size of the audience made for a bit of exclusion. So, I suggest Lincoln Hall for multiple shows.

Great show. Belle must love KC cause they played a little of everything. Great cuts and some different renditions. Really cool show and fun. They had crowd folk get on stage for some silly dancing to 'Boy' songs. Also they played Judy and the Dream of Horses, much to the delight of the 'raging peeps in the back row.' I appreciated the ensemble, including some local Kansas City violinists! Representing the little Tomato ! Go Royals! I enjoyed the opener, Courtney Barnett. Hope she keeps writing the punk-pop songs.

I am mainly a fan of older Belle & Sebastian tracks. Although singer Stuart Murdoch promised a 'smorgasbord of songs,' since it was their first appearance in Kansas City, it ended up being primarily a concert in support of their most recent album. Songs were all played on live instruments by a large ensemble including eight official members as well as a few auxiliary musicians who are only appearing on this tour. Videos and static images were displayed behind the band for most songs. I did enjoy this show because they are excellent performers, especially Murdoch, who has gobs of kinetic energy and charisma, but I was disappointed at the limited selection of songs from the first three albums, which are widely considered their best and are certainly my favorites. Requests for old songs were flatly denied with a terse 'Nope' and a joke about submitting the requests in the form of an e-mail prior to the show, which somewhat killed the mood. This was a fun show, but it reminds me why I don't often go to concerts of established artists. If you have particular tastes, it's easy to be let down.

I had never been a HUGE fan of Belle and Sebastian. I did like them from watching the movie 500 Days of Summer, but I was not trying to go see a show. I listened to a friend and decided to go, and I was blown away. First of all, I love the venue, and I am SO glad it was inside instead of out. It felt more intimte. But I know this band now, and outside would have been a blast. The fan base was more than cool. New age hippies. I say if you like any jam music, go see them. The music was so good. Hard to deny. I would see them again tomorrow.

B&S was awesome and sounded great, didn't seem like Real Estate got the same sound check!

belle and sebastian were great! it was the first time i had seen them live. the venue was perfect aesthetically and acoustically. stuart's voice sounded pristine in radio city. pairing this band and this venue was truly brilliant. there was a great mix of their entire catalog. the video screen behind the band completely enhanced the band's performance and was never a distraction. there were even a few songs that included dancers with choreographed moves, which was a pleasant surprise. i must note that i found the ushers cordial though annoyingly unhelpful, mostly. pro tip: standing in the concourse directly across from the stage is the most convenient place to stand/ drink/ dance.

I absolutely love the band Belle and Sebastian. So I don't believe that I could ever give them less than five stars for their art, music and talent. I loved that they played their new material and their oldies, but I have to say that Stuart's live singing voice was incredible. They venue was world class and had accessible public transportation, but I was sort of bummed that they did not offer passes to meet the band. Belle and Sebastian bought fans onstage to dance with the band so that was awesome too. If they came back to DC I would definitely pay to see them again.

Best concert I've seen in a long time: the band was incredible live and had an amazing energy. They pulled a bunch of audience members up onstage which was fun and funny and kept everything exciting. Echostage was a great venue and I was really impressed with how tight they ran everything. No waits, no lines, no attitude: awesome all around.

Belle and Sebastian put on a wonderful show, drawing not just from their new album but from the favorites of their past (all the way back to Tigermilk). Stuart really connected well with the audience, at one point dashing through the crowd (to the chagrin of the staff). The invitation for several members of the audience to come up onto the stage also added a more personal touch, reducing the 4th wall to shambles. The performance was exceptional, with obvious zeal and enthusiasm consuming the band. They appeared quite energized, but played with their hearts on their sleeves. It also seems fair to say they were as captivated as their audience, and were all to eager to do several encores for the crowd. On the technical side of things, there was quite an impressive light show to accompany the stage antics and siren songs. The venue was quite remarkable as an operatic hall with all the gilded glamour one could muster (although the crowd and musicians all seemed to be a bit out of place and under-dressed). It was a fine evening, with an after party walkably close at the Someday Lounge (with appearances by members of the band).

This bunch of Scots always put on an amazing show and this one was no exception. They have never had the same playlist any time I've seen them which keeps the shows fresh and they are terrific at balancing new material with the favorites. I'd seen them at Constitution Hall a few years ago and it's a good venue for them - fairly large but the audience isn't disconnected.

While I was concerned about the sit-down venue when we took our seats, I thought B&S did a great job of keeping the crowd engaged and energized throughout the performance. The sound was super and they were extremely fun to watch with all the band members continually scurrying about playing different instruments. The string quartet was a nice touch.

I saw the show at DAR Hall. It was really great. You should have played Meat and Potatoes. If you play this at future shows I want you to let people know that Maryam made you play it. It is a wonderful song and I think it speaks to so much of what a gal wants. Not only in the obvious way presented, but in general. I loved the show. I loved how you acknowledged that we were getting older and starting families. I was feeling that all day and when you acknowledged at the show it made my night. I also liked the way you interacted with the audience. I felt alive! Maryam wants to hear Meat and Potatoes! I will travel to another show if you promise to play it. Tell me where and when and I will make the trip.

This concert was amazing. We drove up from Michigan and it was well worth the 4 hour drive. We thought we would never be able to see them so this was an especially awesome concert. I would definitely see them again.

I discovered rather late that they had a new album, no time to listen to it. I was a little stressed out by the idea that I will not be able to sing along. In addition to that, I brought a musician friend who knew nothing about them. My husband had to travel and I had his ticket to give to someone. Well all of these stupid fears went away when they started covering one album after another. Dogs on wheel, the boy with the arab strap, pursuit of happiness A few new ones mixed in after apologizing for trying to sing them. And oh man, one of these new ones with essentially voice and flutes was so beautiful. I heard my friend on my side when he released his breath at the end of the song. I wish I could go back right now.
