My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket

Not quite country, not quite rock--My Morning Jacket's music is undeniably haunting and emotionally charged. At its center is the heartrending, highly affecting voice of singer/songwriter Jim James. Hailing from Louisville, KY, My Morning Jacket first made a name for themselves with the release of their debut album, The Tennessee Fire, in 1999. A follow-up, At Dawn, was released in 2001, which helped win the band a devoted following in both the U.

Red Hat is the perfect venue for an MMJ Sunday set! Dancing on the lawn was about as intimate as being in the pit and the sound was excellent.

Best band in America. I saw Muse last month, and while they had a more elaborate stage setup, their music can't compare to the Jacket's. Thanks so much for coming to Nashville guys. I can't wait to see you again.

My Morning Jacket translates well to the stage. You get the experience of a live show but at the same time the band's songs also sound very similar to their studio albums even when playing live.

I was sick the day before and the night of the concert. I almost didn't go, but it was MMJ. I couldn't miss it. The show was great. They really are a great jam band live. Even if you are a new fan and don't know all of their songs the show will keep you moving the whole time.

If you've ever witnessed the almighty power that is My Morning Jacket, you already know what this show was like. Their first arena performance in Nashville was everything you could expect...brain-melting solos, funked-out covers, and Yim Yames sporting a gun holster complete with orange NES Zapper, wielded with fury throughout the night. Preservation Hall Jazz Band opened the festivities including St. James Infirmary and Louisiana Fairytale featuring Yim Yames on megaphone. Covers by MMJ included Losin Yo Head by Monsters of Folk, Move on Up by Curtis Mayfield, Mother in Law (written) by Allen Toussaint, and Carnival Time by Al Johnson. A new song (Friends Again) here, and a rare treat (Wonderful The Way I Feel) there made this another Nashville MMJ show for the ages.

I am from Louisville where this band got started and got to see them in my college town. I gotta say, this is the 3rd time I have seen them and this was by far the best. Jim James and the guys truly know how to work the crowd, jam, end a song, and choose a set list. I havent had that much fun at a concert in a long time. Unbelievable show start to finish. Its the first time i saw a crowd cheering outside the auditorium just for the sake of how happy they were.

Last night's show was my 1st time to experience MMJ live. I was friiggin' blown away by every moment of the show. I, luckily, get to see them for my 2nd time on Friday in Atlanta at Chastain and I am so stoked, I can hardly stand it. Anyone out there who has not taken the time to listen to MMJ, do it now. They are fabulously entertaining and so musically talented.

This was an unbelievable show!! This was the first night of their 2016 Tour on Jim James Birthday and he did not disappoint!!! 2 1/2 hours of non stop music including three Prince cover songs. This is my first MMJ experience and it won't be my last! From what I understand this band will not book a show unless they can present their complete show with all the lighting effects. FANTASTIC!!!This show was at The Criterion in OKC a new music venue in Bricktown OKC. Very intimate venue with balcony overlooks.

MMJ brought IT at the Masonic both nights! No fun elaborate stage this time as MMJ came simply to tear it up. Good stuff! Great sound. Masonic is an awesome venue to see a show. No bad seats in the balcony which is probably why many of the standing room only peeps on the floor try to bust up top. That was the only negative but that was the crowd not the show or venue!

The band's prowess live is never in dispute. But you take that magic and put it inside one of the most beautiful theaters I have ever stepped foot in and you now have something that easily makes it one of the best concerts I have ever seen. It focused heavily on the band's new album "The Waterfall", but I don't see that as a negative. The new album really is that good. It appeared that Jim was nursing a sore back, so not as much mayhem as I'm used to seeing, but the band has never sounded tighter. The Tennessee Theatre is simply a spectacular venue. Thank you, Knoxville, for an amazing Saturday night!

I'll admit, I came for Band of Horses and did not know much about My Morning Jacket. BoH rocked it and, as the title indicates, clearly outshone MMJ. BoH had a great presence on stage and the music was flawless, save for forgetting a few words in one song. They kept the crowd entertained and every song was played with heart and a generous helping of soulful brilliance. Even more than I expected from them! MMJ was great, they were a little harder than I anticipated but really worked it. The light show was brilliant and I can't imagine that show happening indoors. I felt like the setlist needed work, as the mix of mellow and hard was a bit too scattered for me, and some of the songs were just too long to hold my attention. I think one lasted a full 15 minutes. All in all, the two bands shared great chemistry when they were on stage together and had a couple of great moments during and after the final song when all of BoH and MMJ played together and then had a massive silly string fight. I would love to see BoH again, but I probably won't be traveling halfway across the country for MMJ again.

To be clear, I have been to over a hundred concerts. Seeing the bands i love is kinda a hobby, and I go as far as actually having a bucket list of artists to see before I die. This is also my third MMJ concert. I was drawn to this tour because I like Band Of Horses as well, and liked the idea of getting to see both at one venue. Overall, Band of Horses did a good job... It was a brief (hour and fifteen minute) show, and they were a little rocky the first couple songs, but they settled in and sounded really good the rest of their set. I am pleased i have had a chance to see them. MMJ is another matter.... A whole different league. If Band of Horse was the Minor Leagues, then MMJ represents the Major League All-Star team. The SECOND they step on the stage it is completely electric. The atmosphere around their concerts is really second to none. And in all honesty, they are probably not in the top 5 of my favorite bands... but after seeing them three different times, I can firmly say that they are probably my favorite live band I have ever seen. They played for two and a half hours. They hit all but one of the tracks from their new album (Circutital), and played a lot of old favorites, closing with One Big Holiday. If you like My Morning Jacket even a little bit, I am begging you to go to one of their concerts... It will blow you away.

This is the second time I've seen My Morning Jacket in concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta, GA. Band of Horses- exceptional set list hitting older and newer songs. Powerful guitar sound, so strong and beautiful I wanted to tear up at the end. BONUS: The First Song, Older, The Great Salt Lake, Is There a Ghost,... all played back to back LIVE. Crowd swaying and singing. Sounds better than the album LIVE! My Morning Jacket- My first concert to see these guys, really good performance. Rich sound and the guitarist plays a freaking sax for some jams. Really hits the spot for good rock bands still existing. BONUS: ENCORE- damn guys! you just hit all the favorite songs in that thing- Holding on the Black Metal, Wonderful, One big Holiday, Circuital... also leading into the encore they played "I think I am going to Scream Parts I and II." Crowd goes crazzyy. I love this band!

This was the second MMJ concert I've attended, the first one being Madison Square Garden back in December. While that was an amazing stadium show, Williamsburg Park brought out even more improvisational and overall awesomeness from the band. There was a lot more improvisation (these guys are a great live band!), and the inclusion of more obscure, early songs (including several from The Tennessee Fire) was great. Because MMJ is actually a great live band, they are definitely worth seeing multiple times.

First of all, Shabazz Palaces and My Morning Jacket were great. Most of the crowd seemed to have never heard of Shabazz Palaces so their reception was pretty lukewarm. The venue is great though, easy access to entrances, exits, food, beer/drinks. Inexplicably, they had a Paul Mitchell and a Lacoste booth. So anyway, the entire place became swarmed with double-fist-beer drinking fratboys as the night went along. Not sure when MMJ became popular with "bros" but it was a far cry from the days of yore when a show like this in Williamsburg would have been attended by mostly people that didn't seem like they were out to start fights and elbow you in the face with their monkey-dancing. MMJ's set was great, including a Prince Cover, and Dean Wareham(!!!!!!!) even joined them onstage for a George Harrison cover! The bro contingent did not even react to this.

Band of Horses came out ready to "Play some music and sweat our asses off", their performance was well done and full of energy. This band is one that you definitely want to see live near you. Playing well-known songs and even a song that would be the title track for their newest album: "Mirage Rock" but it didn't make the cut according to frontman Ben Bridwell. Great performance that left the crowd longing for more. My Morning Jacket walked onto the stage and Jim James immediately began slapping hands in the crowd near the stage. Playing tunes from their entire catalog and even 'Rocket Man' by Sir Elton John, MMJ kept the energy high even while playing slower tunes. Songs that are usually a few minutes turned into beautifully-orchestrated jams. Each member of My Morning Jacket brings their own persona to the performance, as James put it "Don't you feel like we are all at summer camp?", everyone felt as if they were on stage with the band and James' mysterious vocal abilities. Bridwell even joined the band to perform vocals for one song. MMJ rocked forever it seemed and even after the last song nobody wanted it to be over. Don't miss this show.

I saw MMJ years ago in Indianapolis in a small venue, and always told people how great they were. When I saw them at Red Rocks, it blew me away how much they've grown; their music and stage presence was incredible. MMJ was absolutely amazing and having seen them many times live, that was probably the closet I have ever been to the stage. Jim James ROCKED IT. There were some technical difficulties, but nothing major. I was however, completely confused as to why Trey Songz was the opener? No one who is going to see MMJ in concert would be interested in seeing Trey Songz, and no one who is going to see Trey Songz is going to know who MMJ is. Weird... I've seen MMJ for the two shows they've played in Boston the last 3 years. I've never been disappointed by their performances. I invited a friend to come along with me for their last show in Boston (August 2011) and he was completely blown away. At one point during the concert, he turned to me and said "I'm kinda bummed out that I'm just finding out about MMJ now. Wish I'd been following them earlier." We were asked if My Morning Jacket is a "hippy" band. I don't know if its their name that is misleading, but they are most certainly a rock band. Jim James brought so much energy to the stage it was almost impossible to take your eyes off of him. The set list was nothing more than their greatest hits and each and every song was completely rocked out. Even the songs that would seem to be calming like "This Slow, Slow Tune" was rocked out by Jim James under the spot light. It was an amazing show. I was a medium fan before the show, now I am a huge fan and note them as one of my favorites.

This was my first time seeing MMJ in person. I don't go to a ton of concerts, so there is not a whole lot to compare to but I must say these guys (and ladies) put on the best rock & roll show I have ever seen. Neko's set was a perfect "appetizer" to the gourmet rock that MMJ brought. She has an amazing voice and her songs are well written/composed. I will be buying some of her albums based on this first listen. Then comes Jim and the gang. It was a non stop, all out rock & roll romp from the first notes to the last. The set list was almost perfect for my taste. I really would have loved to hear It Beats, Steam Engine and all of Run Thru. They did however have a nice mix of old and new that flowed perfectly from one song to the next. The duet with Neko during the encore was a nice treat as well. I had seen it on other set list and was glad we got to hear it in Atlanta too.

I am having a hard time coming up with what to say for this review other than if you are even thinking about seeing MMj don't hesitate -- you must see them! I saw them @ The Pantages in LA which is a beautiful old theater with FANTASTIC sound. And they could play it LOUD! The place was sold out and with folks of all ages. Lots of single guys and couples. Their stage looked amazing. Best stage/light show I've ever seen and it really added to the ambience/mood of their show. They played everything off of their new album Circuital plus lots of the favorites... of course "One Big Holiday" but not "Highly Suspicious". They hit us with song after song after song. No one was sitting down. Jim was in great voice and wailed and growled and just ruled the stage. Carl was simply amazing. He also got to sing one of his beautiful songs with Jim singing ultra high harmony. Patrick was so on fire and proved he is a rock God of a Drummer! Love to watch him play! This is my new favorite band and I've seen them a few times and I will always pay to see them. Don't miss it!

The June 22 My Morning Jacket show at Pantages in Hollywood was another epic performance by the best live band in rock right now. Incredible light show, great sound and MMJ has never been better. Highlights were a killer opening song (Victory Dance), Movin Away, Holding On to Black Metal and Smokin From Shootin. Ah hell, every song rocked! MMJ's audience is as diverse as I've ever seen - from ages 17 to 70. Looks like Deadheads have discovered MMJ to fill the void in their lives. And thats a good thing!

Truly a sight to behold...the Palace Theater in Louisville is really majestic. There was a comprehesive HD film crew there for the AMEX Unstaged Livestream, and they had really built up an interesting Circuital themed set on stage. The band played for a full two hours relplete with an additional percussionist for additional beats on tracks like 'Smokin' From the Shooting'. Huge sound from a group that doesn't take themselves too seriously, but is passionate about their music, and giving back to the people and city that they came from.

My wife and I traveled from Columbus, Ohio to Louisville with high expectations for this show. We knew that MMJ would put on a good show for their hometown crowd on Halloween, but they even surpassed our lofty expectations. We arrived just as the were starting their set, and they opened with one of my personal favorites, "Wordless Chorus" off their album, Z. Jim James stage presence and command of the audience was impressive. We watched them rip through all of our favorite songs off of each of their albums, while James used every bit of the stage to jam out. My personal favorites from the evening were a beautiful version of "Mahgeetah", a fun cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" with the Louisville Youth Symphony providing support, and the predictable yet awesome night cap, "One Big Holiday". This was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. This was the third time we've seen them, and it certainly won't be the last. I already can't wait to see them again.

I was a little nervous with the opening band "Wax Fang" sounding horrible because of the sound guy. There was feedback the entire set from them. I felt bad because it could have been a huge break for them. My fears were over come as soon as MMJ came on the stage. The sound, crowd, and audience where amazing. I drove from Cincinnati to see them play their home town knowing that they would crush the set. They didn't disappoint!

The best concert I've seen in years! They played for 3 straight hours and gave 100%, what more could you ask for. They showed what great musicians they truly are, were so tight, and so entertaining. No frills, like video screens, because who needs distractions? Their music is unique and addictive.

This concert was hands down one of the best nights of my entire life. If you ever have the chance to see this mind and life-altering band, don't hesitate! The location was beautiful, the air was cool, and the show blew my mind. What a perfect mix of singing guitar melody from Carl Broemel, hard-hitting drums of Patrick Hallahan, supporting bass groove from Tom "Two Tone Tommy" Blankenship, interesting electronic keyboard additions of Bo Koster and, of course, the perfectly resonating voice of Jim James. It was an unforgettable show that I cannot stop thinking about now and will not forget for the rest of my life. I'll be telling my grandchildren about this show! It meant so much to me.

these guys played for 2.5 hours straight with extremely high energy. i have been too hundreds of shows and they are the best live band i have ever seen. there is no close second. there was no chit chat between songs, just one song and then another and then another. completely amazing.

Awesome, unforgettable concert. Now experiencing Charter One Pavilion, I would recommend the venue to anyone. It seemed like the opening act took a long time to finish. Califone was interesting, the percussion instruments the most fascinating, but the rest of the band was dull and dragged on. This is the first concert where I was able to get really close to the stage and see the band members up close. I was about three people back from the front so I could see Yim Yames rocking out at his finest and even smile back at him when he smiled for the crowd. He really seemed to be enjoying himself. I feel like I got the best pictures I've ever gotten from a concert so far (I can't post the high quality photos here though). I would definitely go see them live again, even in the near future!

My Morning Jacket puts on one of the best shows I've seen. They played for 2-1/2 hours with full energy, which is exactly what you would expect for any great band. They sounded great and they definitely reward their fans every time they come to Chicago. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, never pass it up.

I got into My Morning Jacket about a year ago, and ever since seeing their Okonokos DVD, I knew seeing them live would be a fantastic experience. They did not disappoint. The setlist was impeccable, the performance was flawless, and they got the crowd really into the show. This band just takes you to another place when they play, and when it all comes to an end, you don't want to ever forget what you were just a part of. If you have never seen them live, make it a priority to no matter what!

Last nights MMJ show in Columbus, OH did in no way, shape or form disappoint. Even with the torrential down pours during the show, the guys rocked my socks off. This is the kind of performance all other bands can learn from....you please the crowd and they reward the band by knowing the lyrics to every single song that was performed. The guys played for over 2 1/2 hours! Now that's what I call music! This band is a must see live for any music lover. Well worth the cost of a ticket.

In all of this world of concerts and musical performances I have attended and taken part in some how, this My Morning Jacket Concert in Columbus Ohio was the absolute best concert I have ever seen in all of my years. The light show was spectacular, the music was gut wrenching, fist pounding, tear jerking, and mind blowing. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band was incredible too. Not a huge fan of the MMJ before May 2nd 2010; now though I bought all the albums and a tshirt the next day. This was comparable to a 3 hour high!

One of the most passionate performers of modern day rock and roll, Jim James captivated the audience from his guest appearance with opener Preservation Hall Jazz Band (outstanding in their own right) straight through the closing encore notes. MMJ is staking their claim to the title of best performing live band...challengers be warned, they will be hard to top. If you have never heard of them before (as it seems many haven't, unfortunately) and are debating whether to catch this show, don't hesitate any longer...just click the 'purchase' button, sit back and enjoy the ride.

This band rocked like nothing I have ever seen before. They opened with "One Big Holiday", and ever after that point the show was pure euphoria. This was the best show I have ever attended, and every time the band comes within an 8 hour drive I will most definitely attend. Jim James has the riffs of Robert Plant, the stage presence of James Brown, and the voice of an Angel. Watching Patrick Hallahan bang the drums is more fun than a trip to Six Flags. "Two Tone Tommy" is my new favorite bassist, and I don't believe Carl Broemel missed a single note the entire show. Anyone considering this band live should do everything in their abilities to do so, and seeing MMJ is something that should be on everyone's bucket list.

Everything about the My Morning Jacket show last night was mind-blowing. From the vibe in the crowd to the tunes from the band, positive waves were flowing every which way. To top it off, mother nature was in full force and synced up with the audience and the band to give us the most intense experience. The heavy wind plus the fog machines made for a portrait only the mind can paint, with just a slight drizzle to cool us all down enough to keep us from completely floating away. My third time seeing them and it always feels like it's the first time discovering music, I recommend anybody who is a fan to journey out to the closest show available, it is worth every penny and more!

If you think MMJ's albums are pretty amazing, you haven't heard anything yet! These guys just love to play together and it shows. They must have drank from the fountain of youth in St Aug before the show as they played a solid mix of new and old stuff for over two hours and jammed out hard on several of the songs. Smokin from Shootin right into Touch Me I'm going to Scream Part II for the set finale was the perfect culmination. Jim James' stage presence is irresistible. These guys are the real deal.

I have seen MMJ at this very venue before and the sound was great, but this particular show seriously needed a sound check. Jim James rocked out as always, but the instruments were way louder than the vocals. The only way you knew what he was singing, is if you knew the song. Over all tho, it was a great show and will see them every time they come to town.

I attended with two first timers, a 55 year old rock show Veteran and a 15 year old at his 3rd rock show. the 55 year old remarked "These guy's are amazing, this must have been what people felt like when first seeing Pink Floyd in 1969." The 15 year old having just recently seen twenty one pilots and Phish exclaimed that My Morning Jacket was the "best show ever."

I love My Morning Jacket, always found their music calming & peaceful. Their concert was otherworldly. Jim James & the rest of the band stretched the instrumentals of each song, making the entire concert one continuous symphony. It was art in its purest form. Just incredible. I will ABSOLUTELY be seeing them again any time they come back in town.

The band was flawless. They played fantastic music, all that which blended in so perfectly. Never going to here this lineup again because each of there concerts are each differently. The opening with Gary Clarke Jr. was awesome and then when Jim Ross took the stage you knew something special was going to happen. A voice from the heavens, amazing that they are still this good even though majority of them are in their late 30s. I have to say that this is a band that sounds just as and maybe even better love then they do recorded.

I'm not a huge jam band fan. But my Morning Jacket has nuances of Pink Floyd and Tame Impala. Gary Clark Jr is a must see. That was my 3rd time at one of his shows and he is just an incredible musician.

I was really pumped for this show, because I'm a huge Gary Clark Jr fan (he was the opener) & was interested in being exposed to My Morning Jacket! Gary Clark's set was amazing in the pit, it was mostly full, with good energy, & the music was AMAZING!!! Unfortunately, as MMJ was coming on the pit got packed with a TON more people...I've been to a lot of concerts & I don't mind things getting "full", but this pit was absolutely, jam packed!!! It was shoulder to shoulder from the first inch inside the gate & from the front row by the stage to the back row by the fence... Anyway, the show was good. GCJ & MMJ were both worth seeing! But Red Hat Amphitheater really needs to reevaluate the number of pit tickets they sell...sadly, after this experience, I don't think I'd buy another ticket in that section again.

This was one of the best shows I've seen in a while! Rain caused an hour delay, but Gary Clark Jr gave an incredible set to open up, even though he condensed a few songs so he could give the audience more songs with slightly less soloing, but he gave it his all as usual and put on a great performance. MMJ followed with an immensely energetic show that kept the full house rocking all night. You can never go wrong when seeing either GCJ or MMJ.....great night of music!!

the show was delayed one hour by rain., Gary Clark Jr played for about 35 minutes. the audio was pretty crappy. after another 35 min delay, MMJ came on I enjoyed their set. the light show was pretty good and the sound was better. this venue is not a good place to see a live show. too many restrictions and barriers to having a good time. the tickets were $30 but adding fees brought it to $46. what is up with that?

This was the 11th time we've seen MMJ and the last time we will watch them or any other band at PNC Pavilion. Can't wait to see them again in Raleigh and Columbus where you can hear the vocals in the pit. The opener's sound was also muffled garbage. Other than that once we moved up to some empty seat the sound improved.
