5-star performance but a 3-star venue. As expected, high energy throughout. Great performance, fun crowd even in the pit for an old geezer like me. Sketchy sightlines, especially upstairs. Show up early. Will go again and hole to see bullet many times more! Aura is new and will work out the kinks. Portland deserves a good, mid-size venue like this.

Man of La Mancha is one of my favorites, and I had seen very beautiful productions in both Philadelphia and Dallas; and I wanted to see it again and share it with my family. We had recently moved to Pensacola, so we had not gone to the Saenger Theater before. This review is probably more about the theater than the play. As for the production of the play, I thought it was very well done considering the size of the stage. The cast was excellent and very talented. As for the theater, it was beautiful. However, I found the seating cramped and a bit uncomfortable with no leg room at all. The seats are not staggered and the center stage was blocked from view by the person sitting in front of me. (We had five $90 tickets in the center balcony Row H.) I would definitely recommend the experience, but be prepared to be a bit uncomfortable.

I ve never seen security put on gloves before, I told the girl next to me as I watched the ten security personal standing between me and the stage pull on gloves and bite down on mouth guards Saturday night. What? No riot helmets? Well, I guess they had heard that Flogging Molly was in town to bring their little piece of Ireland to the Southside Ballroom in Dallas, Texas seven days before St. Patrick s Day. Well, this was my fifth Flogging Molly show, but I didn t think to bring a mouth guard. Oh well, just keep your knees bent and don t wear open toe sandals. However, I will bring up a little praise for opening act Jon Snodgrass and opening to the opening act, The Dirty Old One-Man Band, Scott H. Biram who nailed me right in the forehead with his guitar pick. Flogging Molly took the stage with lead singer Dave King hoisting up his ever-present can of Guinness, and suddenly the band dove into THE HAND OF JOHN L. SULLIVAN off their new album. As the guitar, fiddle, accordion, and mandolin blasted from the stage I suddenly felt strange hands along with other foreign body parts grabbing my shoulders and shoving up against my back. Yes, the party had started! Then guitarist Dennis Cassey dove into the opening rift of SWAGGER! Oh, I love this song! some girl next next to me screamed as she grabbed my arm, and we both screamed out the first words together in unison. And then with the next song SELFISH MAN we faced each other and screamed out that words, I ll never understand, why I m such a selfish man! Yes, I had found a bigger Flogging Molly fan than myself. Then after some serious head banging and jumping up and down not to mention a few high fives we sang/shrieked out the words to DRUNKEN LYALABYE followed by a few higher fives. Suddenly my attention was turned to some hefty, burly dude to my left who had pretty much collapsed on the rail. As the security guys tried to pull him over the rail I joined in and lifted up his legs to notice he was wearing a kilt. I m not sure if the rumor of what men wear under their kilts is true of not, but I wasn t asking or looking. After a quick fist bump with security, me and my new Flogging Molly bestie were back to harmonizing with the well-dressed guys on stage along with the horde of beer soaked slam dancers behind us. Grabbing my arm, she shrieked I love this song! as fiddle player, Bridget Regan pulled her bow across her fiddle sending the band into the song REQUIEM FOR A DYING SOUL. This of course gave us the opportunity to scream out the lyrics, Hear the shimmy and the shake from a futile war. Then again, I m not sure either one us really knew what we were saying. However, no words needed to be sang, screamed, or screeched as Flogging Molly s axe man, Dennis Cassey, dove into the guitar solo of BLACK FRIDAY RULE bending and hammering the strings of his Gibson Les Paul nearly a ten-minute solo. Once Dave King returned to his microphone though, me and my new Flogging Molly friend screamed out the words, Black Friday rules! like we were part of the band. My duet screaming partner wasn t the only female on hand for night. You re a tough chick! I said to the girl behind me who had been continuously slammed up against me throughout the concert. Then again, her nose ring told me that she wasn t one to shy away from self-inflicted agony. This conversation was cut short for my new bestie grabbed my arm again and screamed out, I love this song! Well, we love all these songs. That s why we submit ourselves to this kind of entertaining abuse. However, at the end of the show the feeling had drifted down to a mixture of relief and tranquility as the band all danced around the stage to the song that closes all their shows, and guitarist Cassey came down and high fived us all. That s rock and roll with an Irish twist!
