Lord of the Dance

MICHAEL FLATLEY’S LORD OF THE DANCE is described by the New York Post as "fascinating, rewarding and above all, entertaining," and by the Los Angeles Times as "a showpiece extravaganza," Lord of the Dance is a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern Celtic music and dance.  The story is based upon mythical Irish folklore as Don Dorcha, Lord of Darkness, challenges the ethereal lord of light, the Lord of the Dance.  Battle lines are drawn, passions ignite and a love story fueled by the dramatic leaps and turns of dancers’ bodies begins to build against a backdrop of Celtic rhythm.  The action is played out over 21 scenes on a grand scale of precision dancing, dramatic music, colorful costumes and stage-of-the-art staging and lighting.

Wonderful dancing, celtic songs and a terrific story theme! Just can't figure out how they get their feet to move that fast! I had never been to the Mullins Center before, truly a terrric venue for a show.

I thought there would be more of the tap dancing. I didn't expect ballet and opera singing. I was later told by someone that River Dance is what I thought I was seeing. Totally different I guess. also a single stage at the Palace does not work. Two hours of sitting with my head turned to the right was a killer!! I won't ever do a single stage there again. Disney on Ice is fine there. you can look straight on at most of it.

Although the show was amazing, I could not give it such the rating it deserved. I had 1st row center stage seats and was very disappointed that I could not see their feet. Isn't that the most important part of the show? Oh well.....I know next time for a show such as this not to get front row!

Lord of the dance is an awesome show. The story line is simple, but pleasant. The dancing is unbelievable! For those that have seen it in the past, many of the costumes are different now, which is a nice change. I've seen this show everytime it comes to town, and I will continue that pattern until they retire the tour.

The show fabulous. The dancers interacted with the audience with eye contact and facial expressions. The music was phenomenal. The sound was amazing - especially the tapping of the dancers. The soloist had such an amazing voice it was hard to believe it was real. The fiddle players were fun to watch and they had an energy that is hard to match. The 5 lead characters were incredible. You never caught them out of character. I was not excited about the souvenirs though. There are two dance teams that travel and perform this show, and none of the lead dancers from this show were shown in the program. The souvenirs were mostly geared toward women, which made it difficult to purchase something for my 12 year old son who was mesmerized by this show. He did purchase the celtic symbol t-shirt, but he wanted more. There were 2 girls shirts plus glittered and feathered cowgirl hats in pink or black that said Lord of the Dance on them.

I have seen Micheal Flatley in Lord of the Dance and was not impressed at all by this performance for the money. Our seats were on the floor and we could not see the footwork at all. The stage looked like something out of a Middle School Play. The female dancers were very average, not sharp or graceful. The males were the most impressive and in sinc, but still not what I expected. I totally felt overcharged, and disappointed.

Unfortunately, we saw this performance at the Pan Am Center in Las Cruces. I had purchased the tickets (the most expensive ones) to celebrate my husband's birthday. The seats on the floor were horrid. Before the performance even started, a number of people left and found seats higher up which is what we finally did at the break. This was a dance performance, for heaven's sake, we expected to be able to see the dancers FEET.

That fact that the dancers were tapping to an audio track really turned me off. It makes the dancers lazy by following the beat of the taps and not attacking the beat of the music. The other IRISH dance group uses live musicians, and special floor pickup mics. The violinists didn't impress me either. The female vocalist was above what was to be expected and the lead male dancer and male core did a great job, where the women were less than they should have been. NMSU was a great venue to see the performance!! The quality of the pre-recorded sound tracks was intermittent and ranged from poor and very distorted for the first few tracks to acceptable for the rest. At no time was the quality above mediocre. The story line was poor also.

We have seen Lord of the Dance more than once and every time is an awesome experience. This show seemed more geared toward the modern world. I would see it again. Kind of hard to follow or figure out the story depicted without the program, but well worth it for the dance choreography and talent. The singer had a beautiful voice as well. My friend said that she preferred Riverdance because it was more traditional Irish dance, but that this was still a great show, just more like a new York or Las Vegas style stage show.

Maybe it was the venue, NMSU's Pan Am center arena, but the stage and the troupe were a little smaller than the time I saw Riverdance in El Paso. And so, for me, the show was a little short, too. Bobby Hodges (the Lord), the two women violinists, and the female solo singer were the best parts of the show. The stomp-dancing was close behind, however. But the thing that disappointed was that Lord of the Dance programme seemed a little less ambitious than that of its sister troupe Riverdance. I can't help the comparison.

As I begin this review, know that I wanted to give the show the best review that I could. In other words, the most honest review possible. I wanted to say that the dancing, for the most part was very good. The two lead male and female roles danced wonderfully, true professionals. With exception; I place the lead male (good guy) and lead female (bad girl) dancing roles as exceptionally superb! Now for the not so good. I thought the some of the story of the River Dance was lost in some (not all) different or odd costumes. I was looking for more of that Irish old country, magic, myths and legends\u2026 Also, the lead vocal was just OK, not great and not bad either. So, If you have not seen this show, go see it. For me, unless it gets revamped, I will consider it as "I've seen it" and move on.

My wife and I love to go to Irish dancer types of events and have been to River Dance, Spirit of the Dance, and Celtic Woman on more than one performance. We both thoroughly enjoyed "Lord of the Dance" in many ways. Similar to the others I mentioned, but delightfully different in many other ways as well, so much so that it definitely has it's own unique persona. If Lord of the Dance returns to the Raleigh-Durham area, we will be in attendance! We highly recommend Lord of the Dance!

Members of the Lord of the Dance troupe can dance! They're very skilled and capable of so much more than the Busby Berkeley-inspired geometric choreography and tired, cliche-filled plotline delivered. Isn't dancing what this is all about? Tied down by hopelessly outdated strong-man / delicate-woman stereotypes in characters & costumes, the athletic, precise dancing was lost in a muddle of kiddie-level story featuring a war between good & evil, a fool with fairy dust & magic wand, and hero divided between temptress & virtuous maiden. Ugh. Please--do the dancers & audience a favor and dump the plot & costumes. Just let them dance!! That's what we come (and pay) to see. The other stuff is annoying, distracting & boring.

I've wanted to see Lord of the Dance for a while and I even watched the performance on youtube. However, being there in the theater just makes the experience a lot better. You can see the athleticism of the performers, feel the sound and the beat, and enjoy it with fellow event goers. I was a bit disappointed with the dubbing of tap shoes (I know it's for effect, but it was over the top and some times the performers would be completely out of sync with the sound) and it did detract from the event a little. I would still recommend seeing the show though.

My mom and I attended this show in March and were so displeased with it that we left at intermission. It was repetitive and each dance seemed prolonged to the extent that you were eager for them to end. I would not recommend this show. Riverdance was a much better all around experience if you're looking for a show of this type.

I was extremely disappointed. I thought that I would be seeing Michael Flatly. The billboards before the event, as far as I noted, did not say it would be a dance company and not Mr. Flatly. The lead dancer was good but there was absolutely no comparison with Mr. Flatly. Also, there were no playbills distributed and both myself and my companion really didn't know what the story line of the dance was. It seemed to be a cross between Spaceballs and Swan Lake! Anyway, next time I will read the VERY FINEST PRINT of any event advertising. I was very glad I didn't pay for more expensive seats as then I would have been REALLY TICKED OFF!

The dancers are fantastic. That's what the show is all about, and it delivers in that regard. But the numbers by a beautiful female singer are difficult, due to serious pitch problems. Surely, they could do better! But the main problem is the sound. It's so loud, I'll bet sustained exposure would be in the range that could cause hearing damage. Somebody needs to tell the engineer to TURN IT DOWN!

I had been looking forward to this event with my wife and we were seriously disappointed. Not only was there no orchestra, simply music played over speakers, but several of the dance numbers the dancers were "tap-synching"... similar to lip synching where a singer is singing along with pre-recorded vocals. Well tap synching is the same but they're dancing along with pre-recorded tapping. I thought I was imagining things, but we were sitting in the 6th row and it was clear that the timing was a bit off in spots. I was amazed. I was disgusted. Sure, some of the dance numbers were "live" but why not all of them? The grand finale was fantastic and if the rest of the show had been anywhere near that entertaining we'd have been thrilled. Also, the over-acting of the leads was just silly. If you've ever seen Trans Siberian Orchestra and rolled your eyes at it, this was similar. The tap-synching though was the biggest turn off. I will not see this show again and I will make sure all friends and family hear my thoughts on it.

Lord of the Dance is Michael Flatley's vanity project, created after he became a sensation in Riverdance. Nothing can cut the excitement and wonder of Irish stepdancing, which is the highlight of the show. But there was so much not quite right about the production I saw at DPAC. The projected images on the back screens had nothing to do with the story and were very distracting. The female dancers were "C" and "D" list at best - especially the lead female, who was out of shape and out of energy. Couldn't tell you who she was, because the only program available cost $11. I know this is picky, but she had knobby knees. Why is this a problem? Dancing is about line - and her legs never once formed a straight one. The male lead was capable and interesting, but saddled with a story that is all about Michael Flatley's narcissism and, therefore, seems tongue and cheek when danced by an unknown. Also, though I have no problem with nudity or sex in theatre, there is a moment when the female dancers strip down to what amounts to a bra and panties for NO APPARENT REASON, and then continue to dance. It was laughable. This show was not up-to-par for DPAC.

I went to see Irish dancing, and this show did not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed when the whole group was dancing in unison. At times, though, I felt like Lord of the Dance was trying to be too many things. At one point the female dancers ripped off their dresses and danced in what appeared to be sports bras and underwear. I thought it was totally unnecessary. Also, no plot is necessary in a show like this. I wish they would just stick to what everyone wants to see -- Irish dancing!

The show was almost identical to the one we saw 2 years ago at the movie theater in 3-D. The only difference was a woman singer and Michael Flatley was not in attendance. We enjoyed the show immensely and were very happy that the Program Booklets were not set at an outrageous price. $10 was well worth the colorful, glossy Program. Michael Flatley has trained them well and although was missed, they did him proud!!!!!!

I had very high hopes for the show. There were some great moments, especially around some of the men's tap portions, but we found the women's dances somewhat repetitive and not that great. A singer came out multiple times, and she was not good at all to us. Overall I would rate the show as OK -- some great moments, but the downs were greater than the ups.

I so looked forward to seeing this show. My husband and I saw Riverdance in Las Vegas a number of years ago and loved it! I thought this would be similar - boy was I wrong. Yes, the dancing was Irish and there were a couple of good numbers in the show. But I came to realize that Lord of the Dance was a story told in dance and the story was really lame. I think the show had everything the lowest common denominator would love: sex, violence, and Power Rangers. Well - they were not actually Power Rangers, but they sure looked like them - or maybe Nazi stormtroopers - either way they were in black and violent. I would definitely not take children to see this show. Most of the numbers were cheezy - girls flitting around in fairy outfits - and the main female dancer moved her arms more than her legs. The audience seemed to really enjoy the show however - gave them a standing ovation! For what? It just goes to show you that if you charge enough for tickets, no matter how bad the show - the audience will learn to love it.

There are few things in life that impress me. Most of the shows now are remakes of remakes and they get worse with every remake. I've watched Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames on DVD so many times I have had to buy additional DVDs because the first ones one wore out. This one show is one of the rare shows that impressed me. The cast is much smaller than the DVD versions but the breathtaking moves and the dancing is nothing short of amazing. I was spellbound the entire two hours I was in the theater. If LOTD comes back to Memphis, I will be going again. Well worth it.

The first part of the show I enjoyed and the very end. The red flame skulls threw me into left field. I thought I was going to see Celtic Dancing and then to see Satan being honored on stage just did not set right with me. As a Christian woman I would have walked out if I had not brought guests with me. I watched a couple families get up and take their children out when the dancers ripped off their customs and went down to swimsuits. I understand you were trying to portay good and bad. However, there had to be another way to do it. This was the second time I had attended a program at the Saroyan Theatre and before I attend again I will have to read reviews, before I attend.

Far too many special lighting effects with bright LED lights aimed directly in the eyes of the audience made this the most jarring cultural event I've attended. I found myself actually shutting my eyes at several points because the glare and intensity of the lights was hurting my eyes. I'm not clear on how an audience can see what is happening on stage with that kind of lighting effect. Secondly, I found the storm trooper costumes disturbing. I understand the plot was tied to good versus evil, but our world is in the grip of a vast militaristic complex as it is. I am concerned that we are normalizing its presence by featuring that look in cultural events. Lastly, I was not pleased with the female dancers stripping off their dresses to reveal black underware. Really, do we need to reduce everything to a strip show? I found the technical expertise of the dancers stunning, and that could have been the focus of the show. Blinding lights, neo-Nazi allusions, and bikinis really have no place in a respectful homage to Irish dance traditions.

The soloist had a lot of poise but her voice fell short of the mark. The viloinists were exceptional! Overall I would give this performance 4 out of 5 stars only because I have seen others and have something with which to compare.

As a mother of a 9 and 11 year old, I was excited to bring them to the show. It's difficult to find entertainment that is appropriate for children. More often than not I'm embarrassed to see that everything has violence and/or sex in it. So the thought of bringing the kids to this type of show sounded fun and a no-brainer. I was wrong. One of the main characters was "lust" or "sexual desire", not sure. But she danced like a stripper and even had silhouettes of stripper type dancers in the background. Also at one point the whole group of ladies ripped off their cute Celtic dresses and danced in black underwear and bras! My daughter covered my sons eyes and whispered to me "this is naughty". Were the dancers talented? Yes. Was the crowd happy? Yes. But for me it was just another example of our digression.

Wonderfully performed, perfectly executed with high energy and enthusiasm. Talented mix of tap and ballet. The singer was ok, not a great voice, and her selection of songs were unknown. Since it was St Patrick's Day weekend, I hoped she would sing more traditional Irish ballads.

Very disappointed that the all the music was canned. Costumes seemed to be outdated and not something I would have expected for this caliber of a performance. The vocal performer was NOT good at all. By the third time she came on, much of the audience sighed/groaned. I had seen the show Riverdance about 11 years ago and was enthralled. My boyfriend went with me to this show, and I was hoping it would compare - not even close. I almost wished I had not told him about it, since this was an early birthday gift. Overall, I would not go again and most certainly would advise others to spend their money else where.

We have seen Lord of the Dance several times and always love the dancing, and this production was no exception - spectacularly talented dancers. The male lead was the most personable and engaging of any we've seen, and the woman playing the pixie-like flutist was outstanding also. The two female leads were great dancers but lacked appeal and charisma. The story line seemed thinner than usual, less drama in the conflict between good and evil.

I had seen Riverdance many years ago with Michael Flatley. This show was just as amazing. How do they get their feet to move like that?!

What a fun show! I would recommend that any one go see it - however you might not want to take children. There are a few seductive/sexual parts of the show ex: the women rip their dresses off and are dancing in their bra and panties. But overall a very good, fun show! I was waiting for the men to rip their shirts off so it would be fair for the women to enjoy that part of the show.. but it never happened. Didn't really like the singer... She had an ok voice but I think 1 song would have been enough. The violisits were so fun!

I've seen Lord of the Dance before when it first came out and I enjoyed it. This time, the main girl dancer wasn't that great. In addition, the show has been changed to make it more flashy and riske. There's a part where the girls take their dress costumes off and are wearing essentially sports bras and panties. Just unnecessary.

Theatre seats and views were great. Only problem was concessions during intermission. Not enough to accomodate. Lines were ridiculously long. You need to be out quick and in line or you will definitely not make it back in to your seat in time. So, if you could hold out on buying something at intermission, you're great. Other than that....great, great place.

This was a date with my wife and we had a great time. Good seats and a good show, we left feeling very entertained. Had a nice break in the middle of the show so you didn't get that cramped feeling. If you like to see Irish Dancing and enjoy the Celtic music then I recommend going to this event.

Me and my family LOVE Riverdance. I bought these tickets and took my 12 year old daughter. We were shocked at the content, and I wish we had not gone. The dance was still pretty good - although not nearly as good as Riverdance. However, the unexpected sexuality and sensuality was completely inappropriate for children. My daughter is a dancer, and she was uncomfortable. There were many children there. Yes, I could have googled it, and found out. HOWEVER, would have loved there to be a 'warning' or 'notation', that parts may be inappropriate for children.

I saw Lord of the Dance years ago , I was looking for something new or difrent . Dancers were good and talented but my seasting was not great. My rating has so much to do with Rosemont Theatre, selling seat where the half of the stage is not viewble . I felt like seeing Lord of the Dance in 2006 was more Irish original , including costumes. Less dancers in show

This was my 3rd time for seeing Lord of the Dance and I cannot begin to say how disappointing it was. This show has gone from being an amazing work of brilliant dance to a cheap Las Vegas show. I knew from the very first scene that it had changed. The flashing lights were so bright and strong I got a headache. the costumes had gone from reflecting an Irish theme to glittery Las Vegas show. Three quarters of the way through the first act the stage full of female dancers RIPPED off their dresses and continued dancing in bra and underwear!!! This added NOTHING artistic to the show. I spent the rest of the time I was there just shaking my head. You could tell the audience preference by their reactions. Wild clapping for the excellent male dance numbers and mediocre clapping for the scenes that were in poor taste or less brilliantly danced. The women seemed to be lacking in talent. We left shortly after intermission. I am sorry to say I will not be going again.

I've seen this before years ago--and I still love it. The only thing I wasn't so keen on was some of the lack of clothing as this is a family show. The shows is priors years did not have that. The ladies were covered--but the 'bathing suit' costume for me was just a bit 'out there' for this type of show.
