Lila Downs

Lila Downs was so much more fun than expected, will definitely go see her again at Lincoln Center in May. I only wish the show could last longer. And the Mariacho flor de toloache Awesome!

First time seeing her live and I fell in love with her show . The venue was excellent , very intimate and a great atmosphere

How do you mix traditional with contemporary, rock con cumbia, bolero con jazz, mariachi con electronic? You bring in Lila Downs to weave it together and make it look seamlessly easy. On April 9th she performed to a sold out venue in LA which was packed with all races, generations, and styles. She opened the show with "Black Magic Woman", which Santana made famous in the 60s and she made it her own. She performed for almost two hours and included new songs from her most recent album "Shake Away/Ojo De Culebra". To the delight of all, she sang her own hits such as "Cumbia Del Mole" y "Corrido de Tacha" and classic songs such as "Paloma Negra" y "La Llorona". Between songs, she engaged the crowd with stories in SPANGLISH in some instances educating many on the backstory behind some of her songs. My one criticism of the concert was the location...UCLA Royce Hall is a great venue, small and cozy but with restrictiones. I felt many around us wanting to jump, dance, and celebrate the music but we were restricted by the seats and environment. This type of performer is better enjoyed with a drink in one hand, a standing room venue and people singing along to every song. Suggestion for next time...House of Blues, Club Nokia, or Wiltern Theatre!

Lila and her band were just Grand - what talent all.

Online preview said Lila sang all kinds of music, Spanish, rock, country, blues, etc. It didn't say they were all in Spanish. Only English was some intro's . She was good singer but would have liked to understood words. Should warn people of show content. We didn't stay for whole show being unable understand Spanish.

The band played awful, the audio was bad, she sang for less than an hour. One can tell she gets tons of help from the studio when recording.

she is a tireless champion of mexican culture and tradition in the best possible way. seeing hundreds of mariachis from the chicago mariachi heritage foundation was amazing and wonderful and empowering. as usual she doesn't disappoint!- I cannot wait to see her next year- we are getting our day of the dead make up ready!!! thank you Lila!!!!!! we love you!!!!!!

I have seen Lila 2 times prior and she was superb. This time she was part of the Mariachi Heritage Foundation program. This took away from the focus on her. She didn't come on stage until 10pm. I and others got tired of hearing the mariachi band before her. They performed for over an hour. Lila performed for about 90 minutes. She performed well but she has such a vast style that I felt it was edited to just mariachi. I wanted to hear the other Lila that I have come to like and enjoy. The next time I see her, I will make sure she is not part of a foundation.

Lila Downs Was amazing as always, but can't believe we had to listen to 2 hours of little kids play Mariachi when unfortunately were not very good, Lila only played for 45 mins. Aida Cuevas was a big surprise. But I would've loved to hear more Lila Downs and her original songs. The sound quality was good but just a bit too loud,

Wonderful format and acoustics, sightlines excellent

Lila Downs NEVER disappoints! Her voice is amazing, her interaction is always humble and beautiful. HOWEVER, we waited what was almost 2 hours for her to come out. The mariachi seemed to take over this show with close to 2 hours of just mariachi and dance. When she finally did join the mariachi, she sang about 40 or so minutes. In my opinion, it was disrespectful but the crowd was yelling for Lila to come out about an hour in, but I sympathized though. Her name was first on the title of the show so we expected her to be the headliner, not the mariachi. I feel seats were sold because we expected Lila to be "ACCOMPANIED" by the mariachi, not the other way round. Again, it was a really beautiful show but we didn't get enough of Lila and since the mariachi was WITH Lila through her performance, the first two hours could have easily been cut in half. The person in charge of the slideshow didn't seem to know what they were doing either. The slides were mixed up and on an incorrect loop.

I would strongly recommend this event for the entire family. Lila's voice is such a powerful representation of our heritage and the visual components will leave you breathless.

Crowd pleaser! Amazing singer and performer, I will be going to her other concerts.

The even was 3 hours, We waited two to see Lila Downs. The other participants were fine but I thought we would see more of Lila.

Lila Downs represents the soul of Mexico, traditions, legends, folklore and the beauty of the her singing open minds and hearts.

Lila put on a Awesome show and sang all most all the songs i wanted to hear, except CUANDO ME TOCAS TU. which i really wanted to hear.I would love to see Lila again so i hope Lila can make to Atlanta. The Guadalupe dancers were awesome.

Lila Downs put on a powerful, colorful, passionate performance! Her unique voice and style had us on the edge of our seats! Beautiful, strong voice! Great show. This is my third Lila Downs concert. Can't wait for the next!! My only complaint is that many people came in late. Ushers should not have permitted late comers and others to get up and walk across in front of audience during performance. It is rude and VERY DISRUPTIVE!!

The Lila Downs show was great. Her singing and the music were awesome.

I love the performance and attended both this year and last year. I also attended one of her concerts over 10 years ago in Madison, WI! It makes happy to see her proud of her heritage. Very educated about her culture. I love her her magnificent voice. Everything is awesome about her. I was a bit disappointed that her concert was not as long as I had anticipated. Maybe less than two hours. Her fans love her and she only comes once a year to San Antonio so now we have to wait another year to see her again. I don't know of other performers as great as her that's is why I was sad that it was a short concert.

Each and every song was perfectly performed, and in addition very good collaboration with the Guadalupe Dance Company. The show started and ended with the right mix of songs, specially at the end. Son de Difuntos and Balas y Chocolate! a seamless contination of songs and dance. And the duel with the trumpeter and the trombone was truly something to see and hear!

I am happy to have seen her in person. Definitely worth the trip and money I will go see her again

I enjoyed Lila Downs. It was rather tame and pleasant. I must admit that I found Las Reinas de Los Angeles made Lila Downs more of a pleasant time. If they ever tour on their own, sign me up to this all woman mariachi group. Love. Love. Love.

Just great! The Theatre was well staffed by professional, pleasant folks. The sound was very good as well as the lighting. AND Lila Downs was just incredible; truly! I'd go back to the APOLLO THEATRE to see the exact same show again!

The opening "mariachi " act was an annoyance to the audience and an insult to mexican music. Lila downs doesnt need an opener and neither do we Rest of show was great.

It was really something to see this woman's ability to use her voice in so many ways but also how creative and colorful all was. The whole metaphorical and symbolic referencing was truly amazing. This culture( Mexican)us without doubt immensely rich and Lika is great at showing that.

Lila is the ultimate performer. She draws the audience to her and we feel the passion which she sings with. I enjoyed the evening and left the concert completely satisfied with the event primarily because of Lila and not far behind were her professional musicians.

The Lila Downs concert was an evening of beautiful, high energy music!

Lila Downs is the new Chabela Vargas mixed with Amparo Ochoa. An activist and a gifted singer. She does whatever she wants with her voice and any song, traditional or new takes new life. I had the CD before the concert but after attending, I listened and listened to it again. Musicians were very professional and top notched, giving an unplugged real quality. She invited a local female Mariachi from El Paso. Flores Mexicanas did not disappoint us either. Thanks for the tickets sis!. Excellent Birthday present!

I loved the her energy, her voice, her emotion and her band. It was a great experience.

She is very talented with an amazing voice. She knows how to engage the audience. She had us on our feet singing, clapping, and dancing along various times throughout the concert . I loved how she spoke in English much of the time which I'm sure was much appreciated by her many non-hispanic fans. I think it made them feel more connected. I will definitely go see her again.

Lila was at home and personal. Don't guess she needed to speak English to a Latin crowd though. Great show!

Lila is truly a goddess walking among us. She seems to be possessed by spirit as she sings and moves. She was incredibly amazing and truly emotionally moving. My only critique is that it was a short show! About 1 hour and 15 minutes. I wouldn't hesitate to see her again and pay the money that I did to see her. She is a gem.

I had the best time on Friday at the Lila Downs Concent. She was great and was very entertaining. Her stage presence was wonderful and the crowd was full of excitement over each and every song. The opening act was just as good.. Most of the crowd had not heard of them and after their set we were all in love I will go everytime I can to a Latin Concent Guess what...I dont speak Spanish but love the music. Thanks to my MOm

Lila and her band was amazing. The renovated Balboa Theater was the perfect intimate venue for this performance. Made my friends and I feel like we were in a small and select group to enjoy her performance.

I have to say I have never heard a voice so amazing in live concert. If you are looking to see an amazingly talented vocalist with a true connect to art and culture this is the artist for you. Pay the extra money to sit as close as you can to the stage as possible this artist has a energy that radiates!!!!!!

Lila Downs is an amazing artist, she has a marvelous gift. The energy on the stage was amazing, her voice better than ever- Not many singers posses this wonderful gift. I was dying to jump to the stage and dance with her, but in my chair I could feel all that energy. A wonderful lady who respect our mother nature, life, etc.... what a wonderful show. I had the best night ever in my life.

We are Lila fans. We have been going to her concerts for many years and always love the wonderful performance she always gives. I would have liked to hear more of her older music but I still loved the show. Her performance of Kuku Rookoo ku Paloma was fabulous and got a standing ovation. I missed seeing her husband this time Paul Cohen. Hope he is OK.

Lila has a wonderful voice and that nobody can deny it, but starting 30 minutes late and only singing for 1 hour I do not think it is fair or acceptable for any artist.

I love Lila she is a great performance but I felt the show was too short for the money I paid. The show started at 8:20 pm. Not on time and ended at 10pm. Not even two hours. Not sure if she was itll. Also her husband was not in the show. kinda disappointed.

I have been to at least 20 Lila Downs concerts over the years. This was the first time that the performance had various moments of distraction given that from start to finish, there were issues with the sound system. At the start, Lila had to go to the side to be "adjusted." She kept working with them during the concert, having to step to the side to address issues whenever other musicians were centered and attention was off of her. There were folks in black off on the side constantly fidgeting with the cords/lines and toward the end she started losing auditory feedback and she couldn't hear herself. Dolby is synonymous with quality sound systems---how ironic that they did not meet that standard in the Dolby Theater. Lila gets a 5 and the Dolby Theater gets a 1, hence 3 stars.

Lila Downs' music brought out the pride and spirit of Mexican life, struggle and passion. The best concert I've seen in years!

Both Monsieur Perine and Lila perform with their heart on their sleeve. Both Muxers and musicians are all xingones. Both performed without forgetting where they come from. Lila's set was filled with flores, rebosos, mezcal y mucho amor. I definitely recommend everyone to take their moms, friends, husbands, everyoneeee.

great show- the opening act was simply wonderful a great set up for the main show Lila Downs did not disappoint i had heard from many people but i must say i think they were small in the real thing - LIla is one of a kind great performer and wow what a singer - and beautiful - triple act triple enjoyment - thank you for a lovely night

First time seeing Lila Downs at my mothers recommendation ! She was phenomenal !

I thoroughly enjoyed the concert, however, I thought it was a little short. The audio was set perfect, I could hear every word Lila was singing clearly. That was great.

i love the cultural and artistic richness of the show. the graphics on the back ground where a little to repetitive. But mrs. Downs voice is just superb.

Saw Lila Downs at the Pantages Theater, the entire show was just magical and well worth the 6 hour drive from my home to LA. Her voice is so amazing, sweat yet powerful from jazz to ranchero she makes each song her own. I have heard many of the old time songs with dozen of other artists but Ms. Downs interprets each song with her own style and with such passion that it is like I am hearing the song for the first time. Thank you, Lila Downs for such an amazing and magical performance. Thank you to the Lila's band and to the Mariachi Reina de los Angeles for their contribution to the magic of Lila Downs.

My first time seeing her in concert. I was impressed.

Lila Downs is one of our favorite singers. We may be gringos but we are big, big Fans. This show was 'different' because she did mostly new songs, fewer of the ballads and folk songs that she does so incredibly beautifully. So we didn't know them, but still, Lila Downs can sing anything and we will love it. But we missed them. If I end up rating four stars instead of five, it's because I felt the sound system was inferior at the Pantages. I'm no audio expert, apologies, but I thought it sounded muffled. We were in the balcony which is where most people agree the best sound is at least in many theaters. Maybe not at the Pantages? Either the mics or the speakers were dull.

I was alright. The price was good. The Mariachi group was my highlite.

The evening started with an all female mariachi performed to warm up the crowd. Once Lila Downs came out on stage, the audience was electrified. What an incredible range as an artist, her show featured classic and innovative pieces that were both deeply personal and also universal.

Fourth time to see Lila Downs is concert and they only get better and better. She is magical. I can't wait to see her next concert. She's amazing!

Lila is simply amazing, she embodies both the dark and light side of humanity. Her vocal range was amazing as was the opening act. Only misstep was the venue did not allow enough time in intermission for socializing, etc.. Otherwise amazing show!!!

I've been chasing this woman down for about 8 years and I finally got to see her and at a theatre I love! I wish I had been able to see her all these years, because she was amazing, just like I thought she would be. If you have a chance to see her, do it! It was a wonderful experience.

best show EVER!- she has a great voice and so much energy and heart and she gives it all to the audience. it was inspiring and so much fun- and the mariachi contingent and video backdrop made it fantastic- the whole house was up and dancing!! it was literally a transcendental experience and I have seen the greats: nina simone, ella fitzgerald, loretta lynn, stevie ray vaughn, patty smith, etc...

You don't have to speak Spanish to appreciate Lila's artistry. She is a superb artist. She gives you her all. She was singing in Spanish & English. Such diversity. Vivid outfits. Her band was tight. No lip synching or band tracks playing in the back. True musicians, true vocalist. This was my 2nd time seeing her in concert. Both times she performed a different setlist. You don't go to her concert expecting to hear a particular song...you go for the experience, the performance.

She is a force. She filled the whole theater with her soulful voice. Just incredible!

Lila preformed amazing. I have no complaints about how great she did. The only thing that REALLY bothered me was the audience that kept getting up to get alcohol. It was constant! And disturbed her amazing performance.

I saw Lila last October when she performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center -- a very intimate venue. I also saw her a couple of years ago at the decrepit Congress Theater. These were very different but terrific concerts aimed at distinct audiences. So, I knew that the concert in the Auditorium Theater would assume a largely Latino audience -- an accurate prediction. Although I'm a Gringo, I'm fluent in Spanish and have lived and worked on Latin America for over 30 years. I was SHOCKED at how angry and violent the songs in the first half of the performance were -- made even more intense by a DEAFENING sound system. The volume was painful. It was SO LOUD that my husband, who has a hearing loss, had to leave his seat and listen to her from the mezzanine lobby. The amplification, in addition to being loud, actually distorted her voice and sometimes the band also overwhelmed her voice. By the last half of the concert, I was simply too exhausted to enjoy it.

Was one of the best concerts I have ever been to.Lila Downs is one of my favorite artists.

Lila Downs as always mesmerized the audience with her beautiful and enchanting voice, not only is she an inspiring artists she is also a breathtaking woman. Her performance is an unforgettable experience, I left the concert extremely happy and satisfied.

I've seen Lila Downs many times and each time I leave wanting more. She is a great representation of mexican music. These days, it is rare to see a performer like her...passionate, powerful, engaging. I've seen her crowd grow more diverse each time and it's thrilling to see others cultures embrace our Mexican music and culture. A special touch was adding electro-rock band Kinky as an opening act.

Lila Downs' singing is a marvelous gift to the world. She sang non-stop for 2 hrs. Lila inspired her audience with a natural inspiration to make it an ejnoyable and unforgetable performance for a full house at the San Antonio Majestic Theatre. She sang many traditional legendary mexican songs sharing with the world the Latino culture. Her music is for everyone to enjoy.

I have never seen a show quite as incredible as Lila Down's show. I don't even listen to Spanish music, but Lila's music was great. I was amazed how so many people in the audience began to dance. I was awe struck with how so many people of all races were dancing in the aisles while Lila sang.

Lila Downs and her band continue to evolve their musical performances to amazing heights! This is the fourth time I've seen her in San Antonio. The free performance in 2004 at Plaza Guadalupe is a long ago memory. Adelante Lila!!!!!

The concert with Lila Downs was unforgettable. With her beautiful voice and enchanting personality, she led the audience in a musical delight from Mexico through Central and South America. My wife and I were amazed at the reach of her voice. She danced and kept the audience alive singing many of her favorite songs. She received several well-deserved standing ovations. The concert was great! My 3rd time to see Lila Downs in concert. Seven in our group & 3 of us have seen her perform several times, other 4 were as impressed as us.

The blending of cultures is alive and well in Lila. She gave an amazing show! The audience was on their feet dancing and a great performance.

Lila Downs is the best! There is no other current artist who is as talented as she is. She's amazing and beautiful to hear sing and also watch.

The opening act was great. Lila was fabulous but. I really thought she would on longer. An hour and a half is just too short. She said she would sing some of the songs that were being petitioned, but she didn't. This was another disappointment. Other than that, I really enjoyed the night. Overall nice atmosphere.

Great vocalist of mexican folklore music. Very fun and interactive singing. Great performer all around. I am also a big fan of kinky, was disappointed because of they're limited set usually see them as a headliner and longer set. Never disappoint. Vamos queriendo mas y mas! :-)
