Mannheim Steamroller Christmas

MANNHEIM STEAMROLLER: CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT:Mannheim Steamroller have been innovators of the neo-classical genre for over 40 years, blending the finest orchestral sections with electronic elements and a hint of rock to arrive at their remarkably unique sound. Not only are their live performances sonically robust, but they're visually stimulating as well, featuring an incredible light show and illustrations that dance across giant projection screens. Whether they're playing originals like "Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue" or classics like "Joy to the World," Mannheim Steamroller will have fans in the holiday spirit this season on their 2014 Christmas tour.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Mannheim Steamroller is the alias of composer Chip Davis, who created the moniker from "Mannheim roller", a musical technique that was popular in Germany during the 1700s.

Mannheim Steamroller was every bit as good live as I hoped they would be. The sound was amazing but the volume was not overpowering. The lighting and slide show were beautiful and complemented the music wonderfully. They played all of my favorite songs less one. I couldn't have been happier with the concert other than Centennial Hall needs to upgrade and get better seats and a more modern sound system. Other than that it was a wonderful holiday experience!

The music was wonderful, and the musicians had so much fun onstage that we were caught up in the performance. There was not a moment that I was in any way disappointed, but was so glad that we were there. Reliving the experience every time we listen to Mannheim Steamroller's music will be a blessing. Looking forward to next year's concert and hope they return to Topeka.

This concert was more Rennesance Festival, than Christmas. I enjoyed all the music, but thought it should've been more Christmas than Ren Fest! Also, I thought the stage, lights, etc....would be more, uh, decorated.

There is nothing like Mannheim Steamroller to start off the holiday season with a lilt, and a jump, and a bang. We are IN-THE-MOOD. We've seen Mannheim Steamroller on three occasions when they've performed in Gainesville, FL. This concert was excellent as were the other two. Our only issue is with the venue for allowing very small children to attend without a seat. The small child sitting directly behind us on his mother's lap continually kicked my husband and both of our seats. Additionally, his talking and crying during the performance were very distracting. The venue truly needs to set a minimum age and require a ticket purchase thereby providing a seat for small children.

The performance of Mannheim Steamroller was the best start to the Holiday Season anyone could ask for. The music was superb. They had screens as a back drop that displayed everything from ice skaters, to dancers, and actors. Everything was well correlated from the lighting, to the music, and the sound. I would highly recommend this show for everyone to see. It was an excellent professional production.

Sixteen songs, of which 3-4 were actual Christmas songs known to most people. It was more of an Old English Court Dinner. Graphics were elementary and outdated-circa 1970. The only lights were a blue/red single lights. I had rather go to a Jr. High Band Concert than sit through that again. It was a total disappointment and a real failure to begin the holiday season. The sound was imbalanced with the drum beat the only thing that came through LOUD and clear. The 8 piece orchestra section appeared to be an impromptu ensemble from the local college. UGH!!

A few of the songs come from the Church honoring the birth of Jesus. But to M.S. they put in the background distracting video that had nothing to do with it. For a believer that wants to hear and see a presentation of music that honors God and His Son. This misses the mark completely. To be constructive = ditch the videos completely. I will fill in the imagery myself and you (M.S.) won't offend me by making the birth of Jesus a mockery. * Pray for M.S. and if you go - Pray.

This is the second time we have seen MS, the last time at Allstate Arena. What a difference hearing/seeing them in such a personal venue as the Star Plaza Theatre. They were absolutely fabulous and the intimate atmosphere of the Star Plaza just made them that much better. Allstate is good for loud rock concerts, but for someone like MS, you need a place where you can appreciate all the subtleness of their music. Star Plaza Theatre is simply the best place for a concert. We've been to dozens of concerts at the Star Theatre over the years and are never disappointed. If you get a chance to see Mannheim Steamroller, treat yourself.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVED IT!! They did an incredible job. Their Christmas music is just amazing. I, personally, don't care for the English 1800's music, but they played enough Christmas music to make up for it. Can't wait for them to come back to a place we can see them again! SEATING: Not enough legroom for my husband with his physical restrictions. Would appreciate a way on your website to be able to choose aisle seating to better fit his requirements. he has bad knees and hips, so sitting for that length of time in the cramped space was difficult and finally proved impossible.

First, I have to say, it was not the same without Chip Davis, Arnie Roth, Jackson Berkey and the rest of the regular crew. It was sad to hear that Chip will no longer be performing live. On a good note, I thought the "new, young" artists who performed did an admirable job of staying true to Chip's style and humor. It was a big disappointment that they had such small screens to show the visuals on. I've been to the concerts where the screens were huge and really showed the great detail that Chip put into filming the videos. And the lighting effects have been much more impressive before, as well. I did, however, like the fact that they played some pieces that I'd never heard performed live before. I will say that, despite some of shortfalls of ths concert, they did make up for it somewhat at the end with the triple encore that included "Stille Nacht" (impeccably performed) as well as using a large video screen to perform the "upbeat" version of "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen". But in the future, whenever Mannheim Steamroller comes to Grand Rapids, I'll always buy tickets, in the hope that the next concert will even be better than the last one. And as long as Chip Davis is in control at the helm, I know that Mannheim Steamroller will continue to be as much of a Christmas Tradition as "A Wonderful Life", "A Christmas Story", "Miracle on 32nd Street", and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation"! Best Wishes for the holidays, Chip, and continued sucess for 2011 and beyond! (Side note to DeVos Performance Hall: Late comers should not be shown to their seats until the intermission. They let some idiot come in one song before the intermission. Very distracting!)

They got down to brass tacks and performed flawlessly the whole show. Other than introductions and a short video from Chip Davis, it was all music, which is exactly what I paid for. Seeing them live is the difference between a 52 inch HD TV and an old black and white set.

The music was wonderful!. The stage show was lackluster. The videos used were from the history of the group and are very dated. The video by Chip Davis was a distraction as opposed to a positive addition to the show. The production would be better served by the use of additional lighting or computer generated backgrounds rather than very old videos projected via a poor quality projection system. I would go to the show again tomorrow for the music...not the production.

Eh. Okay. I felt a lot was missing. The graphics on the screen were very old and appeared grainy. They looked like they were shot in the 70s or 80s. No one actually sings green sleeves, just another video. The drummer boy had some of the worst video. Would have been better if there was real singing, and all the music was created there like a total concert. Not just added to background rhythm with weird old video. I thought I would be more impressed. Definitely needs some fresh thought to go into the videos. I did notice almost all of the crowd was older men and women but they should also start trying to appeal to the younger crowd. I give three stars because I liked the old theatre.

We really enjoyed the concert. The music was great, and that's really what we went for. The only major downside was the graphics. What was projected on the screen behind the musicians had to have been at least 30 years old. If they were going for nostalgia it really didn't work!!! I love the Little Drummer Boy but the quality of the video was so poor it was laughable, especially when the decapitated heads go flying through the air. One video had "synchronized" dancers in a kaleidoscope effect. They weren't synchronized at all. That may be because we're spoiled with CGI where one segment is cloned to other segments so all are identical. In any case it was severely lacking. Finally, they performed Greensleeves featuring Elyse Davis. The musicians played while a pre-recorded video of Elyse Davis singing the song aired behind them. Seemed like a bit of a cheat to me. Again I have to say, we enjoyed the concert. I don't know if it was quite enough to make me want to see them again without them making some changes/updates.

I am a longtime Mannheim Steamroller fan and have always been in awe of Chip Davis' talents. I have never had the opportunity to attend a MS concert, so I was really looking forward to their 2017 Christmas concert in San Antonio. In short, the music was fantastic, but the production as a whole was a huge disappointment. First the positives; the musicians in the "Green Tour Cast" were all excellent, most notably, Anna Lackaff on harpsichord and synthesizer and Tom Sharpe on drums. The audio engineers did a wonderful job of providing the audience with great sound. No soloists lost in the background, no over-driving the venue with excessive volume, just a solid musical experience. So, what went wrong. The videos in the background were a major distraction. The videos were projected across the entire stage behind the musicians. The opening number "Music of the Spheres" had three very different stimuli competing for the audience's attention - the music itself, a collection of NASA videos and an audio track of NASA Mission Control communications. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that each input is interfering with the other. The music, which is what we came to hear, was the loser in the mix. I never did figure out the connection between NASA's exploits and Christmas. The rest of the videos were distracting at best and, at worst, amateurish counterpoints to the quality and professionalism of the musicians. Prior to the intermission, rather than allowing the audience to bath in the afterglow of a great arrangement of "Angels We Have Heard on High", Chip chose to crash the audience back to earth with a "HEY, BUY MY STUFF" video commercial. -Tacky- There were fewer videos in the second half of the production so, when the videos appeared, I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the music. (Regrettably, that experience could have been had at home with a $20 CD - not the reason I spent $150 on concert tickets). When the videos were absent and the lighting technicians were in charge, the music was actually enhanced by their excellent work. The compositions and the arrangements were classic Mannheim Steamroller, the musicians were excellent and, yes, I would recommend you go, but... Note to Chip: fire the choreographer or, if it was you, go back to what you know best - it"s the music ..... ----- Note to All: The Majestic Theater in San Antonio, the location for this review, may be one of the most beautiful music/theatrical venues in the world. The acoustics certainly enhanced this performance. If you have never been.... go. You won't be disappointed.

The Manheim Steamroller Christmas concert was enjoyable. We sat on the second tier and there was plenty of legroom. The musicians are very talented, playing multiple instruments, and they played many of their old favorites. Lighting, snow machines, and movie screen behind the bond helped to enhance the performance. The volume was not overly loud such as that of a TSO concert. Truly an enjoyable evening.

I liked the music and the musicians. However, the videos that played behind the band were very distracting, outdated (see attached picture of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as Deck The Halls played) and didn t seem to fit the particular songs. One video featured a YouTube video of a very lovely singer and the band played to the YouTube video. In my opinion, if I am at a live concert I expect to hear live singing. If they can t have a live singer for whatever reason, eliminate the song. Also there was a commercial prior to intermission hawking their newest album. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this show.

Been to many Mannheim Steamroller Christmas concerts over the years - and this was one of the best ever! Maybe it was because this was the final concert of the season for them - or whatever the reason, they seemed to put an extra special touch on the performance this time. The audience was very appreciative and probably the most enthusiastic audience I've ever heard at a Mannheim concert. You just can't leave one of their concerts without feeling uplifted. i had not seen Mannheim Steamroller live before, and I am so sorry if I ever passed up an opportunity. It won't happen again! Cannot believe all that beautiful music didn't come from a 50-piece orchestra. The talent that these musicians possess is beyond great! The audience was mesmerized, and while the audience in most of the shows I have seen are moving around, talking, etc., this Maine audience was in awe. They didn't want to miss a note. The videos shown were so appropriate for the music, the lighting was magical, and the snow was an added feature.

I was very apprehensive about going but my wife has always wanted to go. I assumed that the music would be all slow paced Christmas music. It started out that way but at the beginning of the second-half the beat picked up. The violinist was amazing and the drummer was the best. The harpsichord added a contemporary feeling to the music. I can't wait for the tickets to go on sale next year.

I purchased 2 tickets from Ticketmaster immediately. Very easy process. Checking in was a breeze. The Drummer (Tom Sharpe) is really gifted. He was fun to watch with his awesome long blond hair. His performance was very complex with the many instruments He played...including the Recorder. All the Performers are extremely talented. They played all my favorite songs including Toccata...which is the first song I ever heard Mannheimer Steamroller. I love that song.

I have been to many shows and this was outstanding. One segment reminded me of seeing Emerson, Lake and Palmer many years ago. The musicians were very proficient at their art. The drummer was very energetic, dynamic and interesting to watch as was the other main musicians. If you have never seen Mannheim Steamroller they are a must see. The theater made you feel like you were watching the show outside under the stars. The animation reminded me of a Disney production. The picture quality could have been better but, perhaps it was intended to be like that to give it an old film theater feel.

Shea's was beautiful! I took many pictures of this Architectual building. Mannheim steamroller was breathtaking. My first time seeing them. They are very very good. Many of them play multiple instruments. I would love to see them again! Another thing I was impressed with is they were willing to meet their fans. I got all of them to autograph my album. Even some let me take their picture up close. I was so happy. Made my day!

Excellent. Simply excellent. I used to work in commercial Radio, and have been a fan of Mannheim Steamroller for years. I've played their albums each Christmas, used them in Christmas parades and I have always been amazed at the variety of music and Chip Davis ability to blend classical, modern, electronic and techno forms together to weave such enchanting sounds. I would highly recommend this show to anyone, young or old, and dare you not to be touched, moved almost to tears by their performance.

Got to meet Mannheim Steamroller's drummer, Tom Sharpe, at the pre-show dinner. The concert itself was phenomenal; I'm still amazed at how much sound the six members of the band can make, not even counting the backing orchestra. They played all the classics plus quite a few from their "Fresh Aire" albums, which were some of my favorites of the evening. After the first encore, who else but Chip Davis showed up on stage to sing Silent Night. And finally, the band members all came out front for autographs after the show. What a night!

Good performance but was very disappointed that CHIP DAVIS didn't appear as he is the pivotal personality and star of the show!! I've been a fan for 30 years and love all their music, however, would have preferred this seasonally dated performance consist of only holiday themes selections. Also the visuals seemed stale as most of the videos were the same as seen in their 2001 show.

As always, a concert very well worth attending. This is my seventh MS concert and have loved them all. A bit disappointed that Chip and Jackson were not at the concert but I have to say that MS sounded as good as on the CD's without them. The drummer, Tom Sharpe, is simply amazing !! Thew key players of MS are multi-talented and Jess Yang did a superior job of conducting and playing of his many talented instruments. Christy Crowl is as lovely as always and never without a smile. Loving her "job" indeed shows through. Kudos to everyone involved in this concert and there hard work, some without recognition. Thank you Mannheim Steamroller for an evening of pure joy !!

Amazing to see them in person. 6 members + a small orchestra. What a lot of music coming out of not many performers. And, it snowed in Gammage Auditorium, Tempe, AZ!! What fun. Also, the group allowed still photos (no flash, no video) which was unusual and appreciated. Ticketmaster made everything easy. Wonderful night.

This was a wonderful performance. I had seen them once many years ago and while this one was different with some new material and more older music it was just as enjoyable.

What an amazing concert! If you are a Mannheim Steamroller fan, then you know all about the Fresh Aire series. You may also know that they have not had a Fresh Aire type concert for probably 30 years. With the anniversary of the Fresh Aire series, this concert was roughly half Christmas and half Fresh Aire music. The Christmas concerts are usually the same as the year before, very little changes. This one was fantastic, because they added the new Fresh Aire music; select songs from each of the series. They picked some really great ones, including the amazing Tocatta! I have waited 30 years to hear Tocatta performed live again, and it did not disappoint! I had goose bumps as I watched their fingers play it on the keyboards. It was one of the best Mannheim concerts I've been to in many years, and I've never missed them; we're talking 30+ concerts. If you even remotely like Mannheim, you will not want to miss this performance, it was truly amazing! Thank you so much Chip Davis and Mannheim Steamroller!!

The music was great, but the images playing behind the performers was dated and of poor resolution. Needs to be filmed in 1080 (HD) .

Outstanding. Performance flowed well and was well received. Likable performers. The only thing that surprised me is that there were no programs. Would definitely attend again.

Great entertainment. A packed, very enthusiastic house enjoyed the Steamroller. And I must say they are just as good as the group. led by Chip Davis, that we saw at the Orpheum in Omaha years ago.

We had seats 4-7 in the balcony. Our seats allowed us to see everything on stage. I would not recommend getting seats 1-3 as it appeared some of the view was obstructed by the side. The event was really nice.

This was my first time seeing Mannheim Steamroller. I suggest this beautiful evening to anyone wanting a very relaxing musical experience. It is filled with relaxing video scenery, amazing lighting, and extraordinary musicians. For me, it was so much more relaxing than seeing Trans Siberian Orchestra again, although that is a great show also. The two are completely different. If you prefer loud, exciting, visual theatre and fabulous lighting and special effects, go to Tans Siberian Orchestra. If you want a more relaxing a classy evening, go to Mannheim Steamroller.

This is the third time I have seen a Mannheim Steamroller Christmas show over a 12-year period and it was, without a doubt, the BEST of the three! I obviously enjoyed them each time (or I would not keep coming back), but this was my family's favorite iteration thus far. I think we enjoyed the programming of this tour more than other years, and that it was song selection and order that put this tour over the top. It really made our Christmas...thank you!

Waited 6 years for their return to Boise, ID, but it was worth every minute of anticipation! The moment the first note was played my eyes teared up with the joy of the Christmas spirit. These multi talented musicians are the best! If this performance didn't put you in the Christmas spirit, nothing else would!

Not sure if I'm supposed to rate the venue or Mannheim Steamroller... The venue I would give 3 stars. A total nightmare getting off the tollway. It took us 30 minutes to go about 2 miles. The problem was the actual exit and traffic around the venue. The theater itself is okay. Nice small size but needs updating. Our seats on main floor and we could see the stage just fine. We were on main floor center. There is an aisle that runs horizontally to the stage. Security walking up and down thru the entire show. Very distracting. I've been to the theater a few times. I would go back for an artist that I wanted to see. Hope they upgrade the theater. Mannheim Steamroller was disappointing. The videos look like they were done in the 80s (or before). And I really didn't need to watch a video after the first song and intermission telling me to go to your merch table. Tacky. The first song was cool, but out of place. I'm almost certain that some of the show was not live and was prerecorded. No real chemistry with the artists. That said, a lot of people clearly didn't agree with me as there was a standing ovation at the end. Me? I'll look for another show next Christmas.

Great venue. Outstanding musicians. They had it all...a fantastic drummer, a rockabilly princess on the synthesizer, a 'duck dynasty-like' bassist. Everything and everyone was so good! Will definitely go again, when possible.

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas comes around just about every year. I don't have any of their CDs, but enjoy their music on the radio during the holidays. We try to find something special to do around Christmas and this year we chose Mannheim Steamroller Christmas. The performers were great and very talented. Given their complicated and techno orchestrations, I expected more from the overall production.I thought the videos were poor qualify and uninteresting. This won't become our Christmas tradition, but i am glad that we went.
