I thought that she would've put on a more entertaining show like I have seen her on YouTube. And Chane Park didn't have her microphone right, she could not be heard clearly.

Poor performance! No stage presence. Not warm to the audience. Her first comment was " we about to calm y'all dawn". Performed the entire show at the rear of the stage. Didnt engage the audience. Played base more than she sang. Didn't perform any recognizable hit songs. Didn't sing any of the songs that actually made us fall in love with her. Performance seemed more like a band practice than a concert. She seemed bored and it was obvious she didn't want to be here. It was like she was forced to do this show. Not worth the time and money we spent. Big disappointment. Wouldn't recomment any other attendace until she gets her attitude together. Walked off the stage like " peace out detroit" Not a professional show at all. I was in the 1st row and could barely make her out.

I waited a few days before posting my review because I wanted to see if Meshell's performance would be one that lingers, days after the curtains close. The kind you wake up with, reliving every song. Every minute. And it was. What an amazing night! What an amazing set!! With pallet-pleasing appetizers of the very best of aged Ndegeocello (Outside Your Door, Grace), with her latest release Weather (Dirty World, Chance, Oysters), served up as the main course. Meshell's voice has never been sweeter, nor more vulnerable. The band: Beautiful and brilliant. I left feeling completely satisfied, but always want more. For those of you who haven't seen this show yet, you're in for a real treat.

This was the eighth time I've seen Meshell live. I guess that certifies me as a fan. She opened with "Lady Cab Driver" and the show gained ground from there. She blended songs from her recent album "Weather" seamlessly with songs from previous albums. The show was lively and entertaining throughout. This was a five star effort and evening for sure.

I have to admit that I was very disappointed in the concert. I flew from the West coast to catch Me'shell and expected her to play her classic tunes as well as her new music. From the outset she appeared to be in a funk. Her music is still brilliant but it was like she was just going thru the motions and wanted to get thru with the show as quickly as possible. She played a little more than an hour and only played a couple tunes from her earlier albums. When the lights came on me like most of the fans couldn't believe the show was over so quick. I'm still a big fan and from some of the clips you can find on YouTube from her concerts this one in Virginia was definitely not one of her best performances.

Lets start. Can i please have my money back!! She came on stage with no interaction with the crowd. She was to me HIGH AS A KITE. She played only one of her hit songs. She played her new album the whole night. Thank you but no thank you. Never again.

What can I say, she can do no wrong! Her voice, her band, her bass guitar skills. She was great, very relaxed. I personally got annoyed at people yelling out song titles for her to play as if she's a juke box or like she's a slave there to tap dance on cue. Anyway she was great I love her and she's so sexy.....

This was both my boyfriend's and my first time seeing Meshell in person and both of us were very disappointed. We (as well as many in the audience) wanted to hear more "old" songs of hers. She only performed one. I realize this was The Weather Tour - her latest album, but I think she really should have performed more of what the audience wanted. Also, being from Oxon Hill, Maryland, she should have really let go, being as the venue was "her back yard". Her songs were short - no extensions or long versions. The audience was giving her much love, but she really didn't give it back. I really wanted her to "let loose" on that bass, but it never happened.

This was my first time seeing Meshell live, and I was completely blown away... I just sat there, sipping my glass of wine, and enjoying the mix of sweet and sultry sounds. I have to admit, I do miss the smooth beats from her Comfort Woman album, but I love her versatility and her talent. It was truly amazing to see this woman sing live! I hope she comes back to DC again soon.

I have been a devoted fan since and have longed for years to see at the band. I was extremely disappointed w/a performance of mostly new songs, each approximately five minutes each. I wanted/expected to see significantly more of the songs on previous albums. Besides, these are MUSICIANS! I expect to see musicians perform. This show displayed absolutely no soul, no grit; obviously done to pay bills without regard for fan expectations. I was heartbroken. No more Me'shell concerts for me.

I liked the venue but thought the sound quality could have been better. The snares on the snare drum vibrated with the guitar so that the music sound quality was not clean. He needed a glass cage or something to prevent the guitar from bleeding into the snare drum. Meshelle is very cool and I love her but I was disappointed by the fact that she only did two or possibly three fan favorites. It seemed as though she was more about making her fans discover some of her lesser known songs or 'new music'. I would have loved to hear a better mix of the old and some new music, especially if it would have extended the length of the concert. I'm still a fan of Meshelle and will recommend her concert to other fans because the price is right and some people might love it, I just didn't love it.

Although she seemed incredibly subdued her voice is incredible how she can go from low and sultry to a high pitched songlike bird............she held the crowds attention, although we longed for the old music she gave us the modern, rock, funky new side of her which was just as cool to me because I can groove to almost any kind of music. After that show I am her biggest fan, I just bought for of her CD's and I intend to have all of them before the year is out. I will not miss another show when she comes to town!!!! What a disappointing show. Can't imagine what must be going on with Meshell.. it was so tough to watch her stand woodenly and fumble around on an out-of-tune bass. And the mix was absolutely terrible; so out of character for the Birchmere.

Me, along with my friends were extrememly disappointed in this concert. Meshell sang only one of her classic songs, "Outside Your Door". Everything else were new songs that virtually none of us had ever heard. I don't have a problem with an artist highlighting their new material but how do you not play at least a handful of the songs that people know you by. And now, not only were none of the songs she performed memorable, but I would not buy another CD of hers. And to think that before I attended this show I just LOVED her! I almost wished I hadn't gone. I think it was extremely selfish of her to disregard her fans like that. She could have stayed home and played to herself.

Although I was excited to see Meshell Ndegeocello performing at an historic landmark after 30 years of closing but I was very disappointed with her performance. She opened up the show in a very bland way. There was no full band, just another guy with a guitar and speakers. It was like she was in a recording session singing the songs for the very first time. I think she was disappointed with herself not providing her full range of songs especially my favorite ones. I hope she performs better next time.

It was such pleasure to have Ms. Ndegeocello play in such an intimate venue. It was a great opportunity to interact with her live and through her music which is always so soul stirring. I loved that she covered her new material of reinterpretations of '80s R&B and funk. Hopefully she be back in LA soon!

Meshell N. Is an amazing artist, but her performance left alot to be desired. I knew she wouldn't perform songs from her first album(s), but I didn't think she would completely ignore her key hits (I.e. "Outside your door", "Fool of me", etc) Her song choices did not connect to the audience, she seem to rely on extended instrumentals of songs as oppose to using that time to perform other songs. I like her most current albums, but better song choices would have saved the night. Her performance was oddly short; when she finish her last song, she only said, "Good night, Detroit" and she and her band power walked off stage. At least, Anthony David had more to say and his band stayed on stage and continued to play while he exited the stage. I saw people leave early and made the same criticism of her performance. I hope her next show(s) will be better.

Anthony David did his usual and got the crowd involved. Meshell was in her alternative mood. Her concerts are unpredictable because she never tends to do anything off her older albums and for some people thats hard. We like the old jams. However if you're really a Meshell fan and her ever changing evolving music, you'll always get a really good show as was this one.

I didn't care for Meshell at all! I had my tickets for months and it was a huge disappointment. She didn't engage with the audience nor did she sing the songs that created her fan base. Most of the people exited at the halfway point of her show and the boats even drifted away. I don't think she even noticed.

First of all I want to say that I love her music. However, it was a shame none of us got the chance to hear ANY of it!!!! She did not sing any of her hit songs. She played a Jam session with her band, which for awhile was okay. It got boring for the rest of us after awhile. People started leaving before 9:30 p.m. she came on at 9:00 p.m. I am very disappointed and I really feel some monies should be refunded. If given the opportunity to see her again even for free, I will decline! I had to listen to her music in my car after the show, so that the night was not a total waste.

She is seriously out of touch with her fans. Prince evolved, but he remembered and gave fans what they yearned. Meshell has evolved, but she has failed miserably at staying connected with the people who propelled her to stardom. She really needs a reality check! She didnt play ANY of her old stuff...exceptional bass player but would have been nice to hear her sing too. She is one of my favorite artists because of her past work. Meshell N was definitely talented, but her show was short, and she did not interact much with her audience. I was quite disappointed over all! I purchased tickets for the show as soon as they were posted. She is my daughter's favorite artist, and it was my treat to her to see Meshell. She was disappointed too! The weather was terrible and one of the worse of the year, so for people to put themselves out to see her, and then for her to say little or nothing to her audience who supported her was unprofessional and rude. I will not see her again.

With a super-tight and dynamically dextrous band, Meshell wasted no time establishing a subdued vibe at the Sinclair in Cambridge. Opening her first act with "Outside Your Door," an introspective romance from her debut Plantation Lullabies, Meshell immediately wooed the crowd into a trance-state, effectively turning off the hustle and bustle of city living. Then she let us know that Act One would be a set of "old stuff," and Act Two would be the "new stuff." We were all fine with THAT. And she didn't disappoint, serving up delicious soulfunk like I'm Diggin You and Dred Loc, plus select tracks from Bitter. Her touring band is nothing short of amazing. Guitarist Chris Bruce was a standout, providing inspired interpretations o old favorites and drawing the live audience into the new studio material with style. A total pro with SICK TONE! Speaking of sound, the room itself sounded great. I've been playing clubs in Boston for over 20 years, and fro what I could tell, most of what I was hearing was coming off the stage...minimal PA use, mostly for Meshell's vocals. This worked to everyone's advantage, because it put the dynamics in the band's able hands. I don't think I've ever seen a group work the stage volume as effectively. One last note on the music; every single time Meshell picks up her bass, the crowd gets nuts. That's because she's a total badass on the bass! She hasn't lost ANYTHING there. Meshell should never be missed. She'll never achieve the commercial success of her contemporaries because she's too good, too deep. Go see her, you'll never regret it.

Great show. It was divided into 2 sets, her greatest hits for the 1st hour & her new cd, Comet Come to Me, the 2nd hour. There was lots of movement/excitement during the 1st set. The music brought back lots of memories/excitement. Most of us weren't familiar with the new music, the cd was just released 3 days prior. It's hard to get into music you've never heard. A lot of people left before the show was over. Nevertheless, Meshell looked & sounded great & her new band backing her was awesome. Overall, I really good show.

Meshell gave us the ultimate musical feast. I am a photographer and photographed her at a festival in 1999 or thereabouts and vaguely remember her performance. So I was very excited to see her in an intimate concert setting such as Royce Hall. Her voice has dual personalities that have married each other well. Her speaking voice speaking of Nina Simone mesmerized me as much as her sultry almost angelic singing voice popping out Nina favorites. I only wished she'd paid homage to the last of the "4 Women" by speaking her name before walking off the stage abruptly. Meshell is a true gift. I have to also mention her drummer Deantoni Parks. I was in awe with mouth dropped watching him rip every drum note with great precision and great sound. It was well worth the money to see Meshell and her band.

I never miss Meshell when she comes to LA. So I am very comfortable with her shows being focused squarely on new material. This was different. Meshell shared Nina Simone stories between songs and shared insights to the artist and the interpretations of the songs. I love the new album, but the concert took each song to a soaring level of rich, layered and funky musicianship. This is a show for hardcore fans like me and those completely unfamiliar with Meshell's music.

Either the acoustics were terrible where we were sitting (7 th row side) or ...both acts' bands were so loud that none of the words james or Meshell sang were understandable. I also did not like the constant loud repetitive background which I guess must be the current style . The rare simple piece each did was great. But adding complexity and layers with every musician doing something else is not pleasing to me. Maybe that comes with being 72 but give me old soul singers and Nina Simone any day. Guess I will stay home and listen to my LP's (LOL) or sit much further back.

Words can not capture the greatness of a true artist like Meshell. However, I will say that her tribute to Nina Simone was done with a respect that most could not have produced. If you missed this event, you issued something special.

Music was great, but food never came and seats were a little remote. The show was very short, but the musicians were excellent.

I am a concert queen!! I know a good concert when I see it and trust me, I saw it!! I have see Meshell at least 3 times before beginning17 or more years ago. Off the chain is all I can say. Meshell outdid herself. I literally downloaded the CD before I left the theater. I couldn't sit still in my seat. I won't even talk about the drummer who was kill'n those drums. Thanks Meshell!!

Her interpretations of Nina's songs were beautiful, edgy, modern, yet held all of their original power.

Meshell is one of the few artists who can put her spin on such an iconic spirit as Nina Simone. The show was great . I am a fan, so i try to see her every time she is close to my area.

While I enjoyed watching Meshell Ndegeocello perform I did not appreciate how short the show was. I did not appreciate the screens continuing to display the upcoming performances at the Theatre, nor did I appreciate the backdrop to Meshell's performance. The stage has little to offer when a single performer (in this case two performers) is sitting there and all one sees behind them is an empty, crude stage with no curtain to hide the ugliness. As for the Theatre itself, there aren't enough servers, the food took too long to arrive and there is not a good enough rotation for servers to check drinks. I'm sure these kinks will be worked out for future performances. But I must say, it is a beautiful theater!!! Well done!

I am a huge Mechell N fan and was looking forward to seeing another of her performances. I know that she is low frills and that is what I love about her, but this was a bit too basic. She walked on stage with a mic and a guitar player, and no band. This might have worked had it not been for the guitarist being out of tune and having to take 5 minutes to tune his guitar after every song. Then he just stopped playing in the middle of one song and had her start over again. It was might amateur night at a local hang out. I had high expectations of the venue and the performance and was disappointed by both. The venue is beautiful, but is not conducive for concerts. First, they left the large screen on with ads flashing for the first part of the concert and it was so distracting. Then they never turned off the lights, which led to people talking loud and acting as if there was not concert going on.Then the food was so expensive and not very good. I'll sum it up to say that it will be a while before I pay money to go back to the Howard Theater unless they work out the kinks. I'll drive to the Birchmere, before I walk the few block to there, which is sad. I really hope it gets better.

Meshell Ndegeocello's performance at the Howard Theatre was amazing. She has exceptional vocal range. Her mellow approach to entertaining is so easy, music flows thru her like a river. Meshell's knowledge of the guitar and the blend of her vocal and instrumental talent just mesmerizes her audience. If you have never had the opportunity to see her perform, treat yourself to a wonderful, soul-stirring experience, she just flows.

I didnt expect the standing room situation at the Howard Theatre. I didnt like the fact I had to stand the whole show and I expected Meshell Ndegeocello to have a band instead of the guitar only. It was ok. 5 of 10.

I'm a huge Meshell Ndegeocello fan. That said, I wish she had performed with her full band. When the curtain went up, I think most people were surprised to see just Meshell on bass and Chris Bruce on guitar. They're both world class musicians. Meshell's singing was great and they played a good mix of the old and new material, hence the 4 stars. However, I think many were disappointed with the format- especially with Meshell coming back "home" to D.C. at the Howard Theatre. It should have been advertised as such.

I completely enjoyed the show with only two people on stage. They were able to run through several different songs from several different CD's and they flawlessly executed each of them.

I love this artist but I didn't know it was going to be an acoustic show. The sang too slow and the first few songs she sung I never heard of. This show was truly a drag and I saw a lot of folks walking out.

The two-person-band was very up-close, intimate and outstanding. No hype or animations\u2026just music. I don't believe anyone else could have pulled off such a performance\u2026simplicity, style and grace.
