Amazingly deep set list. Did many obscure tunes. Loved the Acoustic opening set. Great Venue. Everything was perfect except for the 6'4" Drunken Goon in front of me who thought the audience was there to see him. Finally removed by security during the encore. (a little late) But, all in all a wonderful show. Will see Porcupine Tree every time they play the east coast!

My first time to Radio City Music Hall and I thought it was great! Accomodating and friendly staff, a clean and classy place. Porcupine Tree was practically flawless. They started off with a 4 song 'acoustic' set, to my (pleasant) surprise, then left the stage and came back with guns blazing! awesome show! they covered the new album of course, but made the crowd SO happy by pulling out some of the 'old goodies'.

This venue has always been a classy one, but throw in Porcupine Tree and you get one hell of a show. The sound and lighting were great. The musicianship of this band must be witnessed live. Do not pass up an opportunity to see these guys play. I went to the show a casual fan but came out a huge, huge fan. I was completely blown away by their extreme changes in dynamic...one second they were in the middle of a beautiful slow piece and the next they were throwing down some heavy rock riffs. As a musician myself, I felt their performance was inspiring. Do yourself a favor and see these guys if you have the chance.

It rocked! the audio was so crisp that even when the bass line and bassdrum were in snyc there was a distinct difference that normally does not happen for most other concerts; well this wasn't most other concerts. Th band truly showcased their talent this time, I recommend to anyone.

Acoustic setup to open the show was a nice touch. The band was on key and the sound was great to start off the electric set but was too loud not long after that. By the time we were half way through the show the seats were vibrating and we had to put our ear plugs in. I don't mind loud music but it became totally distorted. Also, I know the band was trying to get in as much material in 3 hours as they could but they left out a half dozen of their best songs and stretched out too many instrumentals. Overall I really enjoyed the show and I think Porcupine Tree is the greatest rock band in the world.

Fantastic show! P-Tree lived up to the legacy of Radio City and played an excellent list of songs old and new. They still gave in to the temptation to play a lot of songs from The Incident, which I could have done without, but most fans were happy about it. Considering how long it took me before I got to see them in the U.S. it was worth the wait!

there is not much i can say. as a musician this was hands down the most phenomenal display of musical genius i have ever witnessed in my life. from beginning to end, the night was special and will never be able to be redone by porcupine tree or any group of the like. words truly can not describe or give justice to what the people in attendance at radio city musical hall had experienced on Friday Sept. 24th 2010. all i can say is thank you porcupine tree for the experience... i will personally cherish that night for the rest of my night.

Radio City was a great venue, ofcourse Porcupine Tree was shocked when they had to sign autobook for the venue (every concerts in Radio City was like Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and all!!) Sound was amazing, really loved Gavin's double bass pedal kicks (was like gun fire). Overall band was tight and strong, didn't really see the stage performance, but hey they don't need that! Steven is amazing. First of all, when the curtains pulled up, i was shocked, Porcupine Tree just had some acoustic guitars, one little drum on floor and couple of chairs, i thought "what, that's it? there are not gonna play heavy?". Later they changed everything and everything went awesome! Would love to see them live again and again! Best concert i have ever attended!

The show was great because they didn't have to plug just their current album. They got to pick the set list and had fun doing it. The music was professional, and tight. They played for 3 hours more or less and really wanted to give he crowd as much of the night as they could.

5th time seeing this band which since 2002 has become one of my favorite bands and actually an obsession. An opening set of semi acoustic older songs followed by a set of favorites with alot of suprises starting with the full version of " Even Less . Set 3 focused on 2009 "The Incident" which was amazing and the most ambitious part of the show. This set also featured a excerpt for Fear of a Blank Planet opus track Anesthetize called "The Pills I'm taking" which was one of the highlights of the evening. The sound was perfect, the seats were comfortable and I wish they would have played for another hour. Only complaint was the traffic to Manhattan took me 2 hours and 50 min and I know the city very well but this was ridiculous and 1 missed the first song of the evening a favorite of mine off of the Stupid Dream album called" Stranger by the Minute"....and no material was played from "In Absentia" which was strange.

Words fail! I was fortunate enough to see Porcupine Tree when they appeared at "The Bottom Line" in NYC in 2001 and have followed them ardently since. What a fantastic transformation they've been through! They're a long way from "Signify" and their sound is even more complex. Steve Wilson is a songwriter/composer/musician of the highest order and on top of that seems like a damn good guy with the vibe he sends to the audience. The group is so tight live it defies description; what a truly incredible live band! RCMH is a great venue and the acoustics were spectacular. I'm honestly wondering about seeing them the next time around, because I'm honestly wondering how they're going to top this concert, because they pulled out the big guns for this one!

The 3 plus hour show at Radio City was unbelievable. The breaks were short, and the music never stopped. This is probably the most unheard of band that plays their heart out at each show. Fans were not disappointed, and new comers are now fans for life. They rocked back in their catalogue, and came up with some gems, and the newer material was fantastic...

Porcupine Tree literally opened for themselves. They started with an acoustic set which they did not prepare for and it was done so perfectly. Then Steven Wilson joked around saying something like "the headlining band is next." Then for the rest of the show, they played a lot of their old stuff which was brilliant. If you weren't there, you have no idea what you missed. This show literally re-defined what i thought was beautiful in this world.

The set list says it all - it was one of those special concerts. A good mix of mellow and heavy numbers. Started off with a "semi-acoustic, self supporting" setup with Colin on a contrabass. Half an hour of soulful music and then the electronics came alive. There was an extended version of Even Less, Sky Moves sideways and the good mix of songs from the Incident. A perfect ending with the encore - "Arriving somewhere..." I wish that they played 'Trains', but since they have played from 'In Absentia' numerous times before, it makes sense to leave it out this time. All in all, a wonderful concert. This is the second time I am watching PT - each a unique experience.

Porcupine Tree at Radio City - It doesn't get any better than that, and they did not disappoint! There was no opening act, so PTree came out and did a 30 minute acoustic set to open for themselves! All in all they played from 8pm to 11pm with a couple of short breaks. They played a lot of older stuff for the die hard fans and a good selection of their newer stuff.

I have been to at least eight PT concerts since 2002. This was the best so far in a beautiful venue. The band, the sound, the setlist was more than I could have ever hoped for. Having seen them so many times and in so many different venues and having internet recordings of their live shows from all over the world, I have a short wish list of some of their peices that I really wanted to hear live in person and this show rewarded me with "The Sky Move Sideways" an old peice but one of my favorites. Also the fact that they played a combination of old and new stuff and for 2.5 hours, I was in heaven. Thanks PT for a great night in NYC and keep on making great music. PS- the only bummer was they ran out of RCMH T-shirts.

From the point I walked in to one of the most respected music hall of all times my expectation were very high to say the least. The first set was totally mesmerizing and psychedelic. this set was done in an unplugged acoustic in the front of the stage . Pure Narcotic and Futile for me were the best of set 1. Set 2 opened with probably one of the most anticipated songs of the night Even Less (Full Version) Followed by Open Car,Lazarus,Tinto Brass, The Sky Moves Sideways (P1), I Drive the Hearse and Bonnie the Cat. This was Classic PT and at the best I have ever seen them (7 times). Steve and Johns voice were Spot On! Separation of instruments were Perfect. Set 3 Started with a BLAST of The Incident (Occam's Razor, The Blind House, Great Expectations, Kneel and Disconnect and Drawing the Line) If you get a chance to see PT you must watch their Videos. This set up an old song Dislocated Day (My Highlight) next Time Flies, Anesthetize (wow) Up the Downstairs (real old ) closed with Seep Together Encore Arriving Somewhere but not Here. was great. I would have liked something a little more obscure for an Encore but I think the show had to end @ 11:00 sharp to bad.

I heard Porcupine Tree playing in small to medium venues, where they performed with the usual raged passion and keen precision in front of a (growing) number of afictionados craving for their favorite playing their venerated hits. This time at the Radio City Music Hall, however, was different. I mean it was even much better than the usual great shows they usually perform. A great venue requires great shows, and tonight the band remarkably met this requirement by filling the most well-renowned and evocative 30's midtown Art Deco theater with a great musical experience, a Belle Époque rock atmosphere. Like Zappa's or The Who's concerts at the Music Hall, tonight's unique gig represented together a thrilling retrospective of the band by now impressive catalogue, and a fancy interpretation of some vintage compositions. Steven Wilson and Co. melted together the psychedelic vibes of their early cuts with the loudly sonorities of their later works. Gavin's inspired and distinctive drumming was particularly effective in rendering the musical journey even more unique, and the expert hears of the most attentive fans appreciated with great delight how the old wine contained in such pieces as 'The Sky Moves Sideways' and 'Dislocated Day' aged gracefully together with the minds who conceived them -despite them being only in their forties. This re-experience of Porcupine Tree brought me back to my first acquaintance of the band and their early gigs in Rome hosted by Radio Rock, whose taste is now even greater due to the exquisite level of their performing that now match their ongoing creativity. The great John Wesley, by now a recurring figure in the band live shows and hearted half-porcupine, made his part by doing the most difficult thing after being Steven Wilson: namely, doing Steven Wilson -moreover when Wilson in his turn does Robert Fripp. Colin Edwin performed his impressive line of bass with the usual astonishing confidence, together with peace and pace in the tradition of the greatest bass players of rock'n'roll, while Richard Barbieri, a talent of his own, carried us away with his hypnotizing melodies and refrains. In the opening act the band played a semi-acoustic set culminating in rather eclectic version of 'Futile', showing to the crowd all how amazingly versatile this band is, and how much elegantly it can meet even the hardest challenge of warming up thousands of excited fans with just an acoustic guitar, brushes, classic piano and a double bass. The central acts were pure energy and the elegant yet roaring walls of the Music Hall took life again on the notes of 'Bonnie the Cat' and 'Up the Downstairs'. The encore was my beloved 'Arriving Somewhere But Not Here', whose outstanding performance was the only efficacious antidote to the usual riot generated by the demand of the worshipped 'Trains'. I was craving for 'Collapse of Light into Heart', but this is hardly my last concert of Porcupine Tree. A last word about the audience. The span of nearly fifty years of age characterizing the audience testify the great variety of musical experience this band is able to convey, and the enthusiasm around this ongoing project. At the venue you could appreciate teens wearing Tool, Opeth or God is an Astronaut t-shirts, as well as experienced fans wearing some Hendrix, King Crimson, Jethro Tull or Rush t-shirts (by the way, I had my Beatles vintage..), and this is not because of an ostentation of one's favorite band, but rather because many find in Portupine Tree a strand of their musical tastes as they have been explored by such great bands of the past or present past. I am pretty sure that in a not far distant future Porcupine Tree will be considered as musical pioneers in their own genre, and all sort of persons will wear their shirts as a tribute to their music. Long live to Porcupine Tree, and see you soon somewhere, but not here..

I can honestly say this was the best show i've been to in my life. I'm from Cincinnati, and the energy was incredible Not one bit of the show was boring whatsoever. I didn't catch a single mistake throughout the whole concert. They were technically flawless. The Incident was played all the way through, and I have to say seeing it live made me respect the album so much more. The projected animations throughout the show were incredible as well. Props to their director for those. Also, despite what one of the other comments said on this page, I thought Bigelf was just great. I couldn't believe I had never heard of them before. After the show I bought one of their CDs and i've been in love with it since. GO TO THIS SHOW! You won't regret it. I'll put the setlist below, so don't look at it if you want to be surprised.

Their music is so very intricate and amazing. Porcupine Tree is abovove and beyond a five star rating!!!. I have a goal to never miss this band at a quality venue in the area in which I live. Great acoustic session with excellent setlist throughout the concert. I love when band performs their songs in it's entirety from first to last note just the way it is on the album. Previously playing on the smaller theater and club circuit, with the occasional abbreviated festival performance (most recently at London's High Voltage Festival), this "evening with" performance at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall was a real game changer for Porcupine Tree. Lighting was pretty standard for the most part, but almost half of the songs in the 2nd and 3rd sets utilized stunning films by Lasse Holie, projected on a huge screen behind the band. "Time Flies" and "Arriving Somewhere" benefited most from these time-lapse studies in motion. The sound was one of the best live mixes I've ever heard, which is no surprise given Steven Wilson's heavy involvement with this end of production (witness his recent remixes of the King Crimson catalog). And what can you say about the historic Radio City Music Hall, situated in the middle of the greatest city in the world. Besides being a quick hop across the Atlantic, there is no better place to have staged this showcase performance in the U.S. Steve Wilson certainly seemed feel the same as the audience did about the evening's performance, given the very happy look on his face has he walked across the stage waving goodnight. A flawless performance.

They started out slow with a 4 song semi acoustic set. Then took a little break. They came back and blew the audience away with the big audio as they worked there way through their large and impressive catalogue. The sound was a tad rough at first (at least for us on the first level mezz) to much bass drum volume. As the show went on they seemed to lower the volume a little and sounded fantastic. I was amazed at how tight this band is and how well they played. They built the concert slowly, but at the end, there was no where else they could go. They are the best band you never heard of. Great show Fantastic graphics and light show Would see them again in a heartbeat.

Was disappointed with the opening acoustic set. I thought it was a lame way to open a high energy show. Most of the concert for me was spent trying to see the stage thru rude self centered fans who would not sit down. Typical rookie concert goers. People constantly yelling at each other to sit down was a complete distraction to the music to the point of it being unbearable. This was Radio City ,not some arena rock venue. For the price it took me to get to NYC to see this show next time I'll stay home.

The end of Porcupine Tree's U.S. stint of their long tour was excellent. I had the opportunity to see them close to the beginning of their tour last year in Boston, and this show blew the Boston show away. Three hours of P.T. will always beat a regular set, but the song choices (to quote Steven "a lot of old s*&%") as well as the acoustic opening set (Gavin on a stand up bass = amazing!!) made the show phenomenal. And with total regularity, they started at 8 pm as planned (no 8:15 or 8:30 to allow late arrivals), had timed set breaks, and played the most music in the time they had. Just a great show!

I previously went to a PT show in Philadelphia PA for The Incident Tour of 09. At the time I felt it was the best concert I had ever been to, and that it was unlikely that it could be topped. However, I was proven wrong at this special show in NYC. PT performed a semi-acoustic opening act...for themselves, as there was no opening act that night. They then went into a 3hour concert consisting of 23 tracks spanning the better half of the band's career.

Almost three hours, with new and old music; some not played in years. Great sound; all of the band looked like they were having a great time. PT is a neglected band of phenomenal musicians. I'm hoping for a live CD.

Simply said, best $50 I've ever spent. Saw Porcupine Tree for the first time last year in Boston's House of Blues on their Incident tour, and was hooked. I was introduced to them with the epic "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here," and for the longest time, only listened to that song. It's been 3 days since the Radio City show, and I can't stop listening to their stuff over and over again xD. Radio City's acoustics and light shows really added to the experience, especially the freakin' HUGE screen in the back that played PT's music videos with the songs. Thank you Porcupine Tree! This was truly an unbelievable show, and you like read my mind with the set list. Please come back to New York again!!!!!!!

Porcupine Tree gave one of the best shows I've ever seen this past Friday night in NYC. Now, I am not one of those long time fans who know every note and lyric of every song (although there were more than a few people around me who fit that description). In fact, I only went to the show because a friend had heartily recommended it. But the performance was phenomenal! They opened for themselves, playing a short set of acoustic material before leaving the stage and then returning with an electric set. The first part of the second set was all old material, which they had not performed recently, and it was astoundingly tight and energetic. Then they played most of the last album, "The Incident", complete with videos and creative lighting for a full-blown multimedia experience. The vocals and musicianship were ultra professional, and everything sounded just about perfect. Next time they come to town...GO!!!

Great show! The only weakness may have been their choice of songs in the acoustic mini set. Just slightly counterproductive, in my opinion. it's not that they did it, just could've picked a few different songs. Porcupine Tree is a tremendously talented band and, in my opinion, are the best band on the planet- primarily because they are so diverse. All of their songs, hard and soft, work. Perhaps the best thing about this show was the fact that there was no opening act. Three solid hours of PT!

Best concert I've seen this or last decade and probably the the best venue at which I've seen a concert in that time too. While the rest of the world is dumbing down their sources of input and numbing their senses, Porcupine Tree steps it up with demanding, soulful, creative, harmonic intensity. They are the diagnosers of our passive age, calling on the carpet our abdication of agency and lust for surrogates.

Porcupine Tree were unbelievable at Radio City! A set beginning with a few songs played acoustic which in itself were unique in their rendition segued into an energy-filled performance of a lot of their old hits, and most of the good numbers from The Incident. I'd seen them perform at Terminal 5 and thought that was awesome, but this performance definitely took the bar up a notch.

Porcupine Tree took their performance to a new level in this special concert! The choice of material was perfect, the playing and singing was spot on, and the audience was into every note, adding more energy to drive the show even further! One of the best concerts I've ever been to.

The scope and scale of Radio City is enormous. It's no surprise that Porcupine Tree has risen to a level which requires this kind of venue. The show started off with a quasi-acoustic set, which I was not expecting but it worked considering the venue. I was expecting the rest of the show to continue in generally the same fashion, since I didn't see how a few guys on stage would be able to fill such a large hall with their art. After the first short intermission, the story changed. The band started the rest of the show with an explosion of light and sound which continued for a while, and was only interrupted by a few slow segments which allowed us to catch our breath. Overall, I would say the the majority of the set was slower songs, which is not what I left my living room for, but they pulled off the hits without making it sound like it was their day job.

Porcupine Tree was absolutely phenomenal! They began by telling us that they were going to play a lot of old music, which was exactly what I wanted to hear. They went all over the place and it was awesome! They started with a 5 song acoustic set which had that intimate small crowd feeling even though Radio City Music Hall is enormous (I was in Orchestra seating, 8 rows from the front and in the center aisle). The songs were from Stupid Dream, Up the Downstair, Futile, and one from The Incident. They took a break after that and came back with more awesome older stuff from Deadwing, Stupid Dream, and The Sky Moves Sideways. They finished that set off with 2 songs from The Incident and took another break. When they came back they played 5 straight songs from The Incident, then another from The Sky Moves Sideways, and one more from The Incident. Then they played the Pills That I'm Taking portion of Anesthetize which blew everyone away! It was crazy! They wrapped up with Up the Downstair and Sleep Together. Much to my surprise and delight, the encore was Arriving Somewhere But Not Here. I haven't seen that song live before this and it was nothing short of perfect! They put on the best show that I've seen them do yet. I've been to 4 of their shows and every time is a great show. This was by far the best, and the entire setlist was great. My only issue was that they didn't play anything from In Absentia (although Futile could be lumped in with that). I know they play several songs from In Absentia more than any other song, but I was hoping for The Creator Has A Mastertape. I can't even imagine how amazing that song would be live. But like I said it was the best show I've ever seen them put on and I have no real complaints. My face was officially rocked.

Its great to see Porculine Tree being able to play a classy venue like Radio City. Every sound coming from the stage was carefully controlled and flawlessly excecuted. Video was great and the energy of the band really made the room come alive It makes you wonder why such a band doesn't get more recognition here in the US as they are certainly one of the best acts in rock music today.

The band was just fantastic, that is really what I think. I would see them Tree times more. The worst part was that so many people were standing. There is no need for this at Radio City Music Hall. If security did their jobs by having people sit down, we would have been able to see everything the whole time, not just part of the time. When people were standing, it was a constant struggle just to see what was on stage.

I highly recommend this band to any music lover period. You WILL NOT be disappointed. I have attended over 300 live concerts in my lifetime and can honestly say that this was the greatest show I have ever seen, clocking in at almost a full 3 hours! Precise playing, excellent sound, and a real honest performance by a band that has very little exposure and is so overlooked by the media. Attended with almost 20 others (who have never seen the band live) and they left the show stunned; not only by the music and caliber of musicianship, but the overall experience of the additional video footage that is absolutely the perfect compliment to the performance. If you haven't seen or heard of Porcupine Tree, you are really missing out on one of the greatest bands that ever existed!

Amazing show... started out with an impromptu feel to a short acoustic style set. After a short set change PT launched into two sets of older material with blocks of "The Incident" interspersed. For the most part they steered clear of the obvious material off of "In Absentia" and "FOABP" and performed a lot of material from the last millennium instead. A refreshing change since you can experience those songs on the available live DVDs.

After seeing Porcupine Tree many times this show covered many cool aspects of the band. Coming out doing an acoustic thing was very entertaining. I brought a friend who had never heard the band before and was a very green rookie. My comment to him was "would you see them again" , he replied. "Hell Ya" I know that says it all.

I was shocked to see Porcupine Tree book themselves to play Radio City Music Hall. I've seen the band numerous times over the last nine years, mostly in small clubs like Terminal Five and the Nokia Theatre. The crowd filled most of the hall, with tickets sales better than expected. The band played for a solid three hours. The band essentially opened for themselves with a rare accoustic set featuring an amazing acoustic version of Futile. After a quick break, they came back on for the start of their electric set opening with a really rare performance of the full version of Even Less, a track found only on their limited edition "Recordings" CD. Great show. I am hoping Porcupine Tree has added a load of new fans that night.

Amazing show! They added a special 30 minute acoustic (pre-show) set before the main event. 3 hours of bliss - they would have played longer but Radio City has strict limitations regarding end time - 11 pm. Anyone who hasn't seen this band live is missing out - performance ranks right up there with Radiohead, Muse, etc.

Blending almost every influence that matters in rock and prog. from the last 40 years, Porcupine Tree has now put down the blue print and outlined the possibilities for the future of popular music. Moving seamlessly from smooth, melodic and often haunting progressions to dark hard rock movements, to metal progressions that are simultanously gripping and impossible to resist and require a calculator to keep up with, these guys blend emotion and technical exploration in a way that has escaped progsters in the past. Radio City (as I had hoped when i purchased my tickets) provided the perfect place to view and listen to their incredible blend of styles, allowing the fans to hear every instrument (folks I could hear the keyboard and bass parts clearly!!!!) like a studio recording. The band started the show as their own opener act playing an MTV unplugged set (stand up bass, abridged drum set, Wilson on acoustic exclusively) punctuated with "the worst possible song choise for this set up we could make" , a simultanously humerous and awsome version of Futile. At one point in the show Steven Wilson remarked on the bands experience of signing the performers guest book for Radio City, seeing names like Peter Gabriel and Lady Ga Ga rather than names they are used to such as Ultravomit. Nice. Plus the band offered up a load of older material that would make any die hard fan who was'nt at this show jealous.

With no opening band, Porcupine Tree came on promptly at 8 with an acoustic set up for their first set. It was surprising and set the stage for an interesting concert, playing new and old material. The concert built through the night until the crowd that had settled in their seats for the last half of the acoustic set, were bouncing in front of them for most of the electric set. There were no disappointing moments, they kept us enthralled and buzzed for the entire performance. Radio City Music Hall was a top notch classy setting, with plenty of bathrooms, bars, and ushers helping to make it all go smoothly. The merchandising table had an incredibly long line, more set ups would have helped, maybe selling outside prior to the show to the waiting crowd! Otherwise it was a stellar night, lots of shredding guitars, heavy polyrhythms, with John Wesley was an awesome addition to the band. The only question we have is if Steve Wilson can keep this up for the next 43 years? We hope so!!

I have never seen the likes of a band at this caliber of musicianship. The cleanest musical performance for a very complicated genre. Steve Wilson can do NO wrong. The guy is a musical Master mind. great concert , when songwriting, arrangements and musicianship are taken into account, this is easily this best rock band currently working on planet earth. A bounus was being in historic and beautiful Radio City Music Hall, with superb acoustics and comfortable seating-my only gripe being that I have seen P.T. live 3 prior times with the volume level much more comfortable. If you don't have their entire back catalog, go for it. mike b

Porcupine tree is blessed with so much talent and boundless creativity. I am amazed that they still remain cult heroes. The transitions from soft to hard to metal and back are quite incredible. They are clearly gifted and one could be forgiven for thinking they did not practise for endless hours as it seems so natural and smooth One thing to report- the bass frequencies towards the end were too dominant and lost some of the clarity during the harder guitaring bits.

Porcupine Tree put on an amazing show Weds 8/11 at the Warfield. The show was unique in several ways: 1) they were to start a co-headline tour with Coheed & Cambria on 8/12, but for this show they were the headliners and played two sets that clocked in at just over 2hrs. 2) Having played in SF last September on their The Incident tour, rather than play the same show, this time around we were treated to a huge variety of songs, some of which the band hadn't played in sometime, tunes like Stars Die, Normal and the 'full' version of Even Less. 3) because some of the tunes hadn't been played in a while there were several 'warts' here and there, many committed by Steven Wilson for which he was very apologetic and he even said he was embarassed by it.... But this just made the show all the more real and human and the crowd loved it..... Many of these tunes probably won't get played on their co-headline tour due to a shorter set length.....but then you never know....GO SEE "EM!

Porcupine Tree put on a unique and varied show that demonstrated their mastery of melodic, hard driving dark progressive rock. This being my fourth PT show, I am still amazed by the rhythmic pyrotechnics shown by Drummer Gavin Harrison, the genius of Steven Wilson and the wonderful collaboration that this band has had for 20+ years. They combined portions of "The Incident", "Stupid Dream", "Fear of A Blank Planet", "In Absentia" and a a rare performance of "Stars Die" and a few other older gems. SW promised a varied and experimental setlist that had a few minor glitches, but all things considered, they are one of the greatest prog bands of all time and put on another outstanding and memorable performance.

They sounded great but left out some of their best songs. The one song I had to hear was Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and they didn't play it. Very disappointing. Then no Collapse The Light Into Earth, no Fear of a Blank Planet!!!!!, Halo, Piano Lessons!!!!!, Sound of Muzak, and Wedding Nails. But they did play a couple of rare songs, but I didn't know them. The day after, I am still feeling blown away by the fact that they opened with the full version of Even Less! As far as I know, this has not been performed since 1998, back before the album/edited version was released on Stupid Dream. After seeing Rush's Time Machine show earlier this week, seeing Porcupine Tree enter as a four piece and perform this felt like I was still in the Time Machine (John Wesley joined the band after the 15 minute opener). The band was sharp as always, though Steve Wilson managed a few miscues that just added to the charm of what live music is. This was the only night of this quick run through the US where Porcupine Tree is performing a full set, though they are a band always worth seeing. And their "special" US show at Radio City Music Hall is now just over a month away; hoping that this show was a preview of what might be expected for that show.
