Iron and Wine

Best known by the moniker Iron & Wine, Samuel Beam's stunning acoustic guitar and quiet voice once again made waves with the release of Ghost on Ghost, his fifth studio album. This largely experimental record delves into the supposedly disparate worlds of pop, R&B and jazz, meanwhile proving the singer's impressive versatility. The accompanying tour schedule included several appearances throughout the United States, as well as a handful in Australia. As usual, Iron & Wine showed no problems selling tickets, with fans anxious to experience both new singles and classic tracks.

Great concert and performance but there were some songs that were played slow but that s the great part of a live performance is that the artist can change at will. Sam is an amazing lyricist, poet and performer! I d highly recommend seeing Iron and Wine!

He is brilliant and his voice is as good if not better than recordings. He captivated the entire crowd and while he played you could hear a pin drop and see people moved to tears. He's just brilliant.

This was my third time seeing Sam Beam, and not only was it the best iron & wine show I've seen, it was BY FAR the most incredible concert I've ever attended. The simplest way to put it was that it was magical. The location was perfect, the set list was perfect (he spent a lot of time on the good old stuff that got me hooked initially), he was perfect, the awkwardly gawky dancing brass players were perfect! I would go back to that concert every night if I could!

I loved the first half of the concert! He played solo, and his voice is so heavenly! I was directly in front of the stage behind one person and I felt every note that came out from his mouth. He also kept an open dialogue with the audience, very comical. The second half was really cool too, he has a new band and they were really great. His new songs have a postal-service spin on them, really cool. The jams are amazing, almost trance-like, yet still moving. I think this was one of the best concerts I've been to. Encore was Cinder and Smoke.

I was very disappointed with the show. If I had realized that Iron & Wine was a "jam band", I wouldn't have ever bought a ticket. When I walked to the rest room, everyone in the back of the room was entirely disengaged with anything that was happening. The band was completely self-involved and I felt the least cared for at a concert than I have ever been. I don't mind people switching up their songs in concert-- but every song was changed and then extended by at least 3-4 minutes. My friend and I left early after I almost fell asleep sitting up. I've been to a LOT of bad concerts, but none that I've left early at. I'll continue to be a fan of their cds, but don't think I'm going to see them in concert again. I understand there were a few people who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, but for the most part the look on people's faces was boredom.

I'd never seen Iron & Wine prior to Saturday at The Pageant. The opening band (White Mystery) was incredibly loud and forgettable, but the beginning of Iron & Wine was amazing. Sam came out and sang at least 1 song completely a capella, followed by a couple more simple acoustic numbers. I've been to The Pageant for A LOT of shows and I've never seen the place so captivated by the artist. The entire venue was silent as those in attendance hung on every note. No one moved; I didn't even hear the bartenders. And after about three songs, I wondered if this might end up being the most amazing show I've ever seen at The Pageant. And then Sam introduced the band. Without piling on too much, I'd say the band took away from what most in attendance were there to see and hear. I'm sure the band members are nice enough people, but everything about them just seemed unnecessary to Iron & Wine. The lead guitarist was too loud (and a little corny) and the guy on the sound effects machine was incredibly distracting. I don't think people expected to hear laser beams, ocean waves crashing, or any of the other sound effects spliced throughout classic Iron & Wine songs. It wasn't all bad. The band's addition gave the crowd a pretty cool version of Woman King. They also sounded pretty good on any "new" songs they introduced. I guess that's really the summary here: Instrumentally, the band was fine and if I would have known what I was getting into going in, it would have probably been a really good show. Unfortunately, the addition of the band, as well as how they interpreted and played the songs, was entirely unexpected and pretty disappointing. After the low-key opening numbers, the potential was there for an amazing show. And after they finished, I think my friend summed it up best when he turned to me and said "Who was that band covering Iron & Wine?"

Rosie was a pleasant surprise for an opening act. With humor and her little girl voice we were all amazed at her beautiful full vocals! Once Sam appeared the audience was silenced by his first song, "Flightless Bird" in acapella. Wow! Following that I found his performance better live than any CD I've heard. His mastery with guitar, excellent vocals, humore and down to earth style makes him a must see...

The Pageant continues to be a worthy venue...IF you can tolerate the bar noises. Is it St. Louis? Or are shows just like this nowadays? During Jesca Hoop's portion, the noise from the bar area was very annoying! THANK GOD! Everyone was quiet during Sam Beam's portion...it was the quietest I have ever experienced at the Pageant! Jesca & Sam (both very professional)...were SPOT ON & AMAZING!!! EXCELLENT SHOW! St. Louis fans need to be a little more respectful of the artists on stage!!

My boyfriend and I have been fans of Iron and Wine for quite sometime and we're greatly disappointed that it was an acoustic show. After watching an acoustic opening act, we were ready for a full band to come on and liven up the night. Don't get me wrong, he was great acoustically but would have been more fun if it was a full band. I almost fell asleep standing up.

My wife and I had a great time, drove down to San Diego from Orange County and had a nice dinner at Humphreys and then walked over to enjoy the show. I like Sam's attitude and ease with the audience. Played a ton of songs and interacted with the audience and made it a very intimate setting. I would recommend this venue and of course Iron and Wine is always a great show.

This was a disorganized, lackluster performance. No band - just Sam Beam playing acoustic guitar and singing. No notice from the venue stating that he was performing solo. No set list, so constant chatter and yelling from audience to stage. No consistency - it's hard for a musician to carry a room on their own, and he didn't.

Iron and Wine would have been a lot more memorable if there had been a full band. Instead we watched one guy play the guitar for a while. No background instrumentation or harmonies. This is not what I've seen when he plays live on TV. For the price of these tickets, there should have been a full band, at least for some of the songs. He also forgot words and seemed high. One song encore...

Watching and listening to Sam Beam live can only be described as brilliant and beautiful. I felt as if the whole room was glowing and glittering gold as his voice floated and swayed up and around the Casino Ballroom. He seemed so sweet, even from far away, which I think had a lot to do with the way that he spoke, so quiet and kind. The set list was a perfect mix of songs from all albums and there was a segment in the middle where the band left and Sam sang five songs alone. If you're debating on buying tickets to see this band, I assure you, it will be worth it. These live songs sound as if they're coming straight from your record player.

Sam Beam of Iron and Wine was so wonderful and engaging! I expected a more solemn man but he was funny! I expected his concert to be sweet and calming like most of his music, instead he revamped the songs to be far more energetic and give the feeling of a real concert event rather than sitting and listening to a man play/sing music. Shattered many expectations I came in with and I left with a newfound love for this artist.

This was the third time I have seen Sam Beam in concert and he is amazing! He is beyond talented and has a smooth voice that can sing any tune. True talent is when a musician does not need a band behind him or her, when they can stand on the stage with just their voice and a guitar magic can happen, and it did as always for Iron & Wine.

Iron and Wine played a large variety of old and new material that was spot on to the original recordings. They performed for around two hours with Sam doing an acoustic set in the middle for around 30 minutes. During this break for the band, Sam took requests and interacted with the audience, cracking jokes and giving some history on his music. With all respect to the rest of the band, this was the highlight of the evening. Sam's vocals and guitar playing were impeccable, astonishing and mesmerizing. I would highly recommend seeing Iron and Wine to any of their fans or anyone who is into moden day folk music.

The band was amazing!!! But the venue had chairs laid out instead of an open floor and there was no room to dance and groove. When people tried to dance in the walkways, they were asked to go back to their seats. Even the singer mentioned he enjoyed seeing people grooving as much as it could happen. But it wasn't really accomplished.

I have been listening to Iron and Wine for 10 years, and have always missed out on his shows. When the I saw an ad on FB for a show 30 minutes from home, I was pumped! The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom was the perfect venue for an intimate show like this. Staff was great, cocktail service was perfect, and we had great seats. The opener- Secret Sisters, was something to sit through, and I was antsy to see Sam Beam! He started off with 5 or 6 newer songs I didn't even recognize, and was accompanied by a band. His voice was amazing though, either soft enough to sleep to, or giving me chills. He was a little guy with big hair and a long beard, and he interacted with the audience throughout. When he gave the band a break and played a few acoustic songs, just him and the guitar, that's when the magic happened! He took audience requests, and among them played Upward Over the Mountain, Trapeze Swinger, and Sea and the Rhythm. I strongly preferred the older stuff without the band, but seeing those few songs made the whole thing worth it. The encore was some random song I didn't know, and he didn't play Bird Stealing Bread, Sodom South Georgia, or his most famous song, Such Great Heights!! I was really disappointed by this, and wanted to hear more of the older stuff. Still, the acoustic set made the show worthwhile and I would still recommend this show to others!

Iron & Wine is a great act. Sam Beam had a very approachable stage presence. He took new approaches to some of his older songs and played a wide variety of new songs. His stripped-down presentation with only one accompanist on about half the songs, solo the remainder, suited the venue very well.

The avenue seemed more supportive of a faster-paced dance concert but this music was slow and raw. Forcing most of the audience to stand kept people energetic and interactive but it wasn't that sort of show. Seats would have made the experience more enjoyable and appreciated.

Iron and Wine was excellent as expected, but the venue kind of blew. Maybe it's me getting older, but his music is mellow and meant to be enjoyed in a comfortable setting by adults; preferably sitting down and with a drink in your hand, not standing around dancing (his music is not dance music). At this event, you could have either stood around with a significant amount of teenagers (who mostly never heard of Iron and Wine, but came out only because it was a concert on a Friday night) and sit uncomfortably in the back of the room. Would it really have killed anyone if they allowed the 21+ adults in the room to bring their drinks in. In addition to reducing the sound quality, holding it at the Egan felt as if we were all crammed together in a high school gym.

12 piece band accompanied Samuel Beam as Iron and Wine at the incredibly beautiful and timeless Chicago Theater. The venue was perfect, the sound was perfect, and the entertainment was stellar. His sense of humor fit the mood in the room on a Friday eve and his banter with the audience and expressed love for the city of Chicago made it all the more enjoyable. The only bit that was unfortunate was people continually got up to leave their seats to get booze or use the restroom, which became irritating as it happened over and over. The venue and style of music made this more possible, since people didn't have to worry about losing their seats. Overall, it was a beautiful show!

Loved the show. Samuel Beam started with just himself as Iron & Wine but now is backed by an elaborate band. The sound may be described as reminiscent of The Band, Simon & Garfunkel and Elliot Smith all mixed together. Samuel could not have been more appreciative of the audience or grateful. He has a great interation with the audience and even though he is in a big venue, he is taking requests like he is in a coffee house to show appreciation to the fans. Even though the full band was terrific, my favorite part of the show was Samuel playing the acoustic guitar and singing solo. Songs like Naked As We Came and Flightless Bird were hauntingly beautiful show stoppers. Low Light Buddy of Mine with the band was soulfull and had a great funky rhytm. They are definitely on the more mellow side but as good as mellow music gets.

Fans of Iron & Wine for a while, my boyfriend and I decided to buy some tickets. We expected Sam sitting up there with his guitar playing his beautiful music acoustically, since all of his recordings are like that. Well, we were so wrong. And it was so much more beautiful than we expected. On top of Sam's wonderful voice, he had a whole band behind him. Back up singers, piano and keyboard, saxophones, drums, percussion, bass, guitar, and other instruments I could never label. He changed all of his songs, in good ways. Some were way more upbeat, some blue-sy, some slow, some sexy... Everything was amazing. They put on an unforgettable show. I will most definitely be seeing Iron & Wine again when they come back to Philadelphia, which I hope is very soon.

We ended up switching seats at the last minute; ended up front row center. The first few songs were just Sam, his sister Sara, and a few others playing extremely mellow tracks. After that, he brought out a brass section that helped give the rest of the show a more lively feel. For the encore, he came out alone and played The Trapeze Swinger; those eight minutes were surreal.

This was my first tmeseein Iron and Wine, but have been fan for years. This being said I was completely in the dark as far as what to expect.. Once Sam came on stage he was humble and sweet. He began by singing Flightless Bird, American Mouth, no accompanied by anything, it was the most beautiful acapella preformances I have ever heard. Little to say I was enraptured for the rest of they event, Sam Beam is a rare artist that preforms from his art, an inspires those around him. If you get a chance to see him, DO IT!

I've seen Iron & Wine several times before and always enjoyed it. This should have been a "no brainer". However, this show was a big letdown. The new arrangements were drab and the newer songs were delivered without any enthusiasm. I know the band is good. I saw them perform on TV and YouTube. I love the new album. But Sam, it seemed like you were calling it in. Flubbed lines a cute once, after that, it comes off as unfocused and lazy. Taking upbeat songs and making them dirges is not being "an Artist", it just makes for tough listening (ie. The Desert Babbler). We paid good money for the tickets and parking in Manhattan is not cheap. It will be some time before I go to another one of your showa.

This was like no other concert I have ever attended. It was basically Sam just asking the audience for requests...people would shout out various song titles, and he would play one. There was some dialogue back and forth with the audience, but it was far more intimate than I had imagined. I took my sons - one of which was celebrating his golden birthday 11 on 11/11. It was a great opportunity for them to see a true singer-songwriter without the typical fan-fare.

Admittedly, the performer tried his best. He attempted to engage the audience in an interactive manner by opening the playlist to suggestion. That would work with a more mature audience. What ensured here was repeated (to the point of annoying) pleas by audience members for a particularly well-known number that the performer promised to include NEAR THE END OF THE SET. However, the crowd continued to badger for that piece (along with other inane requests such as Free Bird). Charming. The level of whit at Iowa City is off the charts. As the show progressed, it was clear the performer was becoming less enchanted by the heckling as well. Finally, with no fanfare, he broke into the mercilessly-requested piece (doing a damned fantastic rendition) then promptly exited. After lengthy crowd urging, he reappeared to "give us one more." And that really was it. Bottom line: I would love to see Iron & Wine again at another venue, Ticketmaster.

The concert was really chill. Sam got on stage and was really real! His music was fantastic; even when he messed up his own lyrics he was still good!! And the opener Jessica Hoop was really good too!

The sound was mixed so poorly that after leaving our seats to try out other areas of the venue and putting earplugs in to muffle the distortion we finally left. Sam sounded great for the few songs he did without the band, but again when they came on it was like smthing was horribly wrong at the sound board. Such a huge bummer. Many people ended up leaving after plugging their ears for a long as they could.

Sam Beam now insists upon touring with a full band, including horn section and back-up singers. Performs new arrangements of old songs with questionable results. Only did a handful of songs acoustically and seemed to mess up songs/forget lyrics frequently. Only one song at encore. I didn't get the impression Sam cares.

Iron & Wine was Sam Beam with twelve backup people: singers, people playing sax and violins and bass, etc. Part of the set was just Sam and his guitar, some included everyone; I liked the combination.

The Fox as always is a good venue but this time around the sound levels were waaay off. The trumpets, sax, and backup singers drowned out the singer and the mic on him was way too low. In general was NOT happy because I came to see Iron & Wine, the soulful folk-influenced band and instead I got Dave Matthews Band for 80% of the performance. Only 3 songs in their original format were performed which led to the urge to get up and leave.

Was a great show, the interaction with the audience was great. It felt like a smaller more intimate venue and the music was great too!

nasty ticket counter person - off to bad start 13 members in the band?! not expected - not sure if it was needed. sam couldn't remember his own songs - started a couple of times, then stopped, then tried again. no stage presence or energy. audience interaction strange. one woman was asleept in audience. probably better as a studio musician rather than live performer

good music, but sound could have been managed better... at least where we were, in the 2nd balcony, it was often too loud to really hear the music. It felt like the different instruments and vocalists were competing with each other, so we couldn't really hear and appreciate how they were fitting together. Too bad.

I started listening to Iron and Wine back in 2005 and loved the gritty, intimate sound of one man and his strings. Beautiful lyrics, angelic voice. Fast forward a few years to now, and you have a full band (13 people!) with full sound to go with it. Did Sam play any of his old favorites? Well, sort of....if you can call changing the key, tone and everything else but keeping the lyrics playing the oldies. Lets just say it was a challenge to even sing along once you recognized the song. Loved it, it was like getting a new album, and I hope they release a live version so I can listen again. Sam is an engaging performer with a sense of humor and connection to his audience, and of course the music was superb.

I really like Iron & Wine music. I like the older, more mellow stuff and I like the newer swing-y-er stuff. Live, not so much. Not sure if it was the venue (is the Fox known for good or bad acoustics??), or if he had a bad microphone, or if the sound mixing was off, but it was incredibly hard to make out the lyrics during songs -- felt like he was enunciating well, but the sound just wasn't coming through. Between songs, it was hard to make out what he was saying... thought it was me, but my wife had the same experience, and someone back behind us yelled out, "quit mumbling!" Hard to enjoy a show when you can't tell what people are singing/saying.

Coming into the concert, I knew he would have a band and that his music would be different. But I just couldn't get into it. They sounded like bad 70's covers of his own music. Sometimes adding strings, or drums, or horns, or back up singers to a track does make it a little more interesting. But doing all of them for the entire song on a lot of the most popular tracks didn't work for me. Although, he did do a beautiful rendition of flightless bird for his encore.

I love Iron & Wine. I think Sam is incredibly talented and deserves to be heard. He and his band dressed up like Jim Henson & The Muppets in honor of Halloween, which was fun. But the crowd was SO lame! You could hear a pin drop in the theater. Everyone was quiet, not very interactive, and thus the atmosphere was a little stuffy. My two friends and I imbibed on beverages during the show; dressed up in costumes; and were told to "Shhhhh" by people behind us when we hooted and hollered after each song. Yeah, NOT awesome. Would I go again? Yes. Would I act the same? Yep! Would I wish for a better crowd? Most definitely. Orpheum Theater? Gorgeous.

For a medium venue, I have to say it felt like an intimate concert. The thirteen piece band was not only professional and musical, but highly entertaining. The "dancing" by the brass was highly reminiscent of Gladys and the Pips. Sam is the man! Iron and Wine did amazing. One of my favorite parts was the "Iron and Wine buffet section." Sam let the audience members shout out favorites and he played them. Granted it was a shouting contest and not everyone got what they wanted, but it's nice to have a "pick your own adventure." Sam also performed a newly written song, a sneak peak of the future (about Galveston). The didn't play every track from the new album which I was surprised. There was an encore at the end ("Naked as We Came"). The whole show was about two hours and no intermission. The worst part was the opening act which I'll talk about later. That is the reason why I gave this show a 4 out 5 instead of 5 out of 5.

Iron and Wine were so much livelier than I thought they would be. They really picked it up with an awesome horn section and strings. Twelve pieces on stage. The mellow part was when he did 3 songs acoustically, but I even loved that. The horn section dancing kept me moving in my seat. Really great show! Only negative was I wished they had played Flightless Bird...

I enjoy listening to Iron and Wine and have seen him once before. I prefer his acoustic show versus this show with 13 people on stage. It seemed to have changed some of his songs to accommodate such a large band. I would have preferred having the majority of the show be acoustic or with a smaller band. It was difficult to hear him sing at times and took away from his original sound. I still enjoyed the show. It was entertaining to watch the horn section and back-up singers dancing. I just hope that this isn't what his sound has evolved into, that would be sad. The acoustics and setting of the Chicago theatre was fantastic though! I would definitely see another show in this theatre.

Iron and Wine put on an amazing show! Best one I have seen by them yet! The sound was spectacular at The Chicago Theater. The audience was perfect and ready to interact with Sam Beam's witty commentary throughout the show. The big band was a nice contrast to the solo acoustic set in the middle of the show. Sam really seemed to enjoy the audience, venue, and the overall experience which led to the overall great vibe of the show!

The venue was incredible. Chicago Theatre is a great place and beautiful. Sam Beam and 12 musicians filled the stage w incredible performances. My wife and I had a great time. Truly loved it. If I could ask for anything that I did not find it would be a live recording of the show. I would listen to it time and time again.
