Amélie (NY)

Amélie captured our hearts in the five-time Oscar®-nominated film. Now she comes to Broadway in a magical new musical starring Phillipa Soo (Hamilton, The Great Comet), directed by Tony Award® winner Pam MacKinnon (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), with a book by Pulitzer Prize and Tony nominee Craig Lucas (The Light in the Piazza), music by Daniel Messé and lyrics by Nathan Tysen & Messé. Embark on a mesmerizing journey with shy but inquisitive Amélie as she turns the streets of Montmartre into a world of her own imagining, while secretly orchestrating moments of joy for those around her.

It's unfortunate that such a great play closed its doors so prematurely. This play was engaging, vocally fantastic and the two leads: Philippa Soo & Adam Chanler-Berat had some of the best chemistry and it looked extremely genuine. It will be missed!

I am so heartbroken that this amazing show has closed. I saw it on Saturday night (May 20th), and it was beautiful! Phillipa Soo is such a gifted performer! Her voice is spectacular, and she is a gifted actress. I loved seeing her as Amelie--loved seeing how she incorporated comedy into the character too. I can't wait to see what is ahead for her--she is a brilliant performer. The rest of the cast was fantastic too. And the set was incredible! The soundtrack is fabulous as well. This show was magical, and though it ended too soon, it shined brightly its its run.

Absolutely MAGICAL!!! The entire cast shines. I will certainly remember this as one of my favorite shows for a long time. The music was beautiful and I walked out of the theatre singin, a sign of a great show. I'll also ever forget a little piece of me "being on Broadway." My friend and I posted a picture with #pickmeamelie and before the show, our picture was on the stage! So exciting and unique.

Amelie was phenomenal. The show has a light and happy feel to it and is full of humor. I have seen it twice and would gladly go again. Phillipa has a gorgeous voice and Savvy Crawford plays a great young Amelie. I'm left waiting on the cast album to come out and would gladly recommend it to anyone in the area.

Wow is what i thought sbout after seekng this show. So sweet, and elegant. Amelie was a great show and fantastic music and acting. I'm so surprised it did not last longer on broadway. I didn't know what to expect but i do know I didn't expect to really feel the show on such a personal level. I was taken in from the first minute Amelie took the stage. The set was beautiful and the entire cast was so delightful. I hope it comes back again bc i would see it most definitely.

The play was disappointing. The plot was pitiful. The beginning was great and it looked like it will be a nice play. The young lady playing young Amelie is very talented. Ms. Soo's voice was beautiful. They were not enough however to save this play. There was no story, the music was mediocre. Once the man fish came out, and the ballon person fell, I knew we were in for an ackward piece. What was the agenda in counting orgasms and the sex toys? Those were not essential to the story. Why were they in it at all? This play was a huge disappointment. After listening to Ms. Soo on original soundtracks of Hamilton and The Great Comet of 1812, we expected an exciting play. Not sure why she agreed to play this role. If it was not for Ms. Soo, this play would have closed opening night. I bought 5 tickets and did not get the value for it. Also the ushers were rude.

My husband and I loved the show. It was entertaining, light-hearted, and a ton of fun. The cast was phenomenal and you could see that they were all having a great time. We loved the live musicians being elevated. The only thing that I felt that the show as missing was more of the original soundtrack from the movie. But otherwise, it was wonderful.

I Can understand why was no hit. Philipa Soo was a dream but the rest were flat and the story was unhinged , I am glad I saw it closing day but that's hit. Leaving" Hamilton " and the readings for "Comet for this was not the best move in my humble opinion. Was this review helpful to you? Going with reduced expectations following reviews we were engaged and engrossed for the entire performance. Phillipa Soo was made for the role and was more than ably supported by a wonderful cast. Minimalist set, maybe, but it did not need more. So very disappointed for those who will not get to see this now closed show. Hopefully, it goes on the road and survives in other forms. My wife and I loved it! It's so sad that it's closing so soon. Phillipa Soo and the rest of the cast were just great! The sets, the music... everything was really fantastic. It's quite a shame that Amelie is closing on Broadway soon, because it was a delight to watch the hardworking cast and hear Phillipa Soo sing her heart out. Admittedly, I can understand the musical may be hard to absorb if you haven't watched the French film prior to the musical. The film itself is very odd and quirky, and for the most part was translated quite well into this musical format. The songs were melodic and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the imaginative story unfold on stage. My advice for the day: watch the film first and then buy tickets to go see Amelie on Broadway before it disappears into the ether!

My daughter and I attend many musicals and, in fact, attended 3 the weekend we saw Amelie. The story and the music are a little disjointed, basically, vignettes held together with a common theme. There was no common theme to the music though, and each piece was new and novel for the vignette it represented. That is probably a problem for most American audiences, but if you know that it is not going to be a typical show, it probably plays much better. Phillipa Soo was perfectly cast; the younger version of Amelie did a great job. But for the fact that it was not a conventional story, it held together well and had a well-balanced cast.

We really loved the show, although it many respects it differed from the film. I'd like to buy the soundtrack when it comes out on June 9. The character of Amalie is more psychologically damaged in the musical, but her triumph over misery is therefore amplified. I particularly liked the metaphor of Zeno's paradox, which was not in the film, and how it related to Amalie's isolation. The sets were brilliant and the singing superb (of course). I'd be happy to see it again with friends or if it tours my hometown (Philly).

It's so disappointing that this show wasn't given a fighting chance. Extremely quirky and light hearted. This play was hard to sit through. The acting was awful, with the exception of the lead female character, who has an angelic voice and was the only highlight of the play. I saw this show in previews and loved it so much that I had to go back in April after it officially opened on Broadway. It was even better after the changes they made from previews! If you've heard Phillipa Soo, you know she's a reason enough to see this show. Seeing her perform live and hearing her sing in person was an unforgettable experience. Not only is she wonderful, but the rest of the company is so talented, fun and vibrant (shout outs to Savvy Crawford in her Broadway debut as young Amelie and Adam Chanler Berat and Randy Blair who are all so insanely talented). The stage is so bright and the music is lovely. The story is inspiring and teaches us all about kindness and the effect that the little things can have on people. It doesn't take much to do something small that can change someone's entire life. This show is a beautiful world of love, imagination, and kindness--would highly recommend! See it before it closes!

I booked tickets to Amelie mainly because Philippa Soo was in it. She was very good but the role was not particularly demanding. I was bored with the show after about 15 minutes. Actors all gave terrific performances. All the supporting actors had additional roles in the fantasy scenes, which was especially fun. The songs supported and moved the story forward. A very pleasant experience compared to the (too) many shows where the songs ARE the story. All in all it was a very theatrical experience with the flavor of the film. If you liked the film, go see it. You won't be disaapointed.

Amelie is one of my all time favorite movies, so I was excited when I found out that it was being turned into a musical. They did not adapt it very well at all. I can't imagine, having not seen the movie, that I would have any idea what was going on at all. The director did a valiant job trying to inject energy into that boring score, but to no avail. My family and I were looking forward to seeing "Amelie"! We were excited to see Phillipa Soo perform, which was a wonderful experience. However, she didn't have a lot to work with in terms of the music. I can't remember a single song or melody from the show (saw it two days ago), and I kept falling asleep. There was no French instrumentation or sound to the orchestrations, and even the actors had no French accents whatsoever. At one point the whole cast sang "Emily" instead of "Amelie". There was no 11;00 number, the story was incohesive, and the show could have been so much better with a little more nod towards its French origins- or change the show and have it set in the US. But one or the other please.
