Steve Wilson is the only working musician today who can quit his day job with Porcupine Tree and comfortably fall back on his side project with Israeli superstar Aviv Geffen. Mike Portnoy can't even claim that. Instead of fawning and clamouring over the obvious musical goodness which I witnessed first-hand, I challenge you to do your own homework. Invest in their music and race to see them on their current tour. Wilson acknowledged during the set that Geffen writes most of the music for the band. Steve Wilson takes a back seat? That's all you need to know. In addition, The Aladdin Theatre in Portland, OR is built for delivering perfect sound. And the staff is amazingly helpful and friendly. I was impressed with my first visit. Now go and seek this band out. You will find it ALL in a Blackfield.

Love their music on disc & videos online - However, NOTHING prepared me for the dynamics of this band live. Watching them live is an exhilarating experience. PLUS, they really appear to genuinely appreciate the love & warmth of the audience. I've been attending concerts since the early 70's and BLACKFIELD is a TOP-TEN all-time. GREAT BAND = GREAT NIGHT

With a mixture of new music interwoven with their previously recorded material - blackfield took the audiance on an amazing ride through riff and tempo changes. Their music combined an artistic blend of melancholic acoustic / electric guitar and at times hard hitting percussion and keyboards. Lyrics are crushing and cutting at times and intenses and flowing at others. Great passion was shown in Geffen's on stage performance. The sound in the Royale was was good also considering the venue. The talent and performance was a great opportunity for Boston to see both an amazing guitarist in Steve Wison along w/ an up and coming lyricist w/ Geffen. Boston was lucky to have the sun shine on the Royale while others in the city dogged raindrops all day

I am a big fan of Porcupine Tree, and their frontman Steven Wilson is the congenial partner of his best buddy Aviv Geffen from Israel in this side-project. Heard their albums a lot when being on a plane or where so ever. But hearing and seeing them life on stage is a completely different a animal. It was amazing from the very first moment. The band was great, but as the majority of the people in the room I flet that Steven Wilson was the real rock star on the stage. The venue was kind of cool (The Royale is normaly an upscale nightclub), and the acoustics in the room were very good. Though it was very loud - may be a bit too loud as the ringing in my right ear lasted til Monday ;-) But it definitely was worth going there. You should know, that I flew into boston from Atlanta ;-) Just let me know when they are on tour again - I will be there!

Other than being tired because the venue is standing only, I thoroughly enjoyed this concert! I'm a huge Porcupine Tree fan and love anything Steven Wilson .. the sound was pretty good and most places have good views (I was right in the front near the stage) . They did play an encore .. If you like Blackfield tehn you catch this concert!

Excellent show all around. Anathema great opener, extremely friendly after their set, Blackfield outstanding as expected. SW is the best thing going in music today, his involvement guarantees excellence! New songs from DNA took off live, catchier than the cd. If you ever get a chance to see any SW project, do it. He's 5 stars plus....

We drove all the way to Boston from Pa and it was well worth the trip. We stayed about a half hour away and picked up the "T" and rode it in to the theater district. The venue was orderly and the stage setup was great. I went there with my two teenage sons, who are also big Porcupine Tree & Blackfield fans. The crowd for this show wasn't overwhelming and even for a standing room only show, Aviv and Steve didn't disappoint. Great music selections, stage setup and acoustics. We were standing within 10 feet of the stage for this 2 hour show and it was awesome. Yes, we'd take the ride back up to the Boston area again just to see a show at the Royale.

This was a beautiful evening. Anathema's acoustic set was a special treat, in rare form. Blackfield put on an electrifying performance with a high-energy feeling throughout the set. The venue was comfortably sized, and had great acoustics. The beverages were a bit pricey, but that's to be expected, I suppose. Overall, an awesome night.

I dig small venues. Blackfield was laid back and chill. It was a tough crowd in Seattle that night, but it was still excellent. Jordan Rudess's opening was phenomenal.

Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen brought their prog-pop project to the El Rey Theater for the last show of their somewhat abbreviated U.S. tour. With several dates cancelled in the northeast and Canada due to a serious family matter, Blackfield ended up the final week of the tour with a swing down the west coast. The El Rey turned out to be the perfect venue for this band, after a cramped and somewhat stifled performance in the front room of the Knitting Factory several years ago. Beautiful melodies and dramatic anthems were in abundance. With three full albums in their catalog now, the band can really structure a setlist for optimum emotional payback. What an amazing show.

Outstanding show! Jordan Rudess opened and really got the crowd warmed up nicely with some originals as well as Pink Floyd and King Crimson covers. Blackfield came out and hit the ground running! Now with three albums of material to choose from they really stretched out and dug in. Steve Wilson gave up the spotlight to Aviv Geffen and let him control the tempo and take all of the accolades. It was their final show of the tour and yet they seemed fresh and super happy to be up there playing.

The show was awesome ! the playlist was the best one ever and they made a great job, even though Steven Wilson was not on his best mood due to a sad event on his personal life, he delivered an energizing show. Aviv was also amazing, and the band is really good, they are all gifted at their instruments.

As a long time fan of Steven Wilson, I had high expectations of this event. I saw them last year at some other joint across town and they were really good. This time they were even better. Everyone in the band has gotten better, the drummer is even better than the first time I saw them, which is un beleiveable! Tomer Z is the MAN. Seffy still does a great job on Bass and is a much better background singer than I remember from the last show. Aviv? Sang his heart out and has improved 100 percent on guitar, which lets Steven add the mood he does so well. Aviv has the riff on Open Mind down now...one of the best songs of the night because of his contribution. And Steven....well I personally feel like he has raised the level of the whole group and I will never stop being amazed at the emotion he puts in his guitar tone and vocals. I did not see him tune that guitar once, thats why I bought a PRS too!

The show was fantastic. I got introduced to the band only in the last few days due to Jordan Rudes's post on Facebook. We love Porcupine Tree, and after a couple Blackfield tracks from Youtube, tickets were acquired. We love the Aladdin.

After a week of cancelled shows, due to the untimely passing of Steven Wilson's father, Blackfield boldly returned to the stage in Seattle at Studio Seven, and at the Aladdin Theatre in Portland. Playing identical sets at both venues, the group performed flawlessly, providing a sound scape unequaled by anyone, save for Wilson's flagship band, Porcupine Tree. No one sings about pain, loss and suffering like Aviv Geffen. Aviv is a more typically flamboyant pop star than Steven, and makes for a stark counterpoint to Steven's more internalized approach. The rest of the band works very hard and brings home the beautiful pain in the heart of Blackfield's music. Excellent concert, jaw dropping guitar from Mr. Wilson. A great time had by all!

I am a casual Blackfield/PT fan. This show was exactly what I expected....a collection of Blackfield songs played loud, with passion. Crowd was into it, and the band was equally charged up. I don't know that I can get very witty with my review other than to say it was definitely worth while. Please go see these guys. I walked away after having bought the first album on vinyl as well. So, that was cool. Only slight issue was it was SO loud. I'm no wimp and have seen hundreds of show in my day. I've never used earplugs at a show, but this one had me wishing I had some. Maybe it was just this venue? I don't know.

Blackfield, as expected was great. The set list was well chosen, the band was in fine fettle, and Steven was especially good, but the Studio 7 venue was horrible, especially the sound. I'd recommend Blackfield in a heartbeat though. Hope to see them again at a different venue.

First, I have to say the venue was great, although standing for 4 hours was a bit hard. It was very intimate, so we were all able to get a good view of the band. I was only 2 people away from the stage with Steven Wilson in my sights the whole time. The music was great (although for the female audience, there was a bit of pause when they referred to "bitches"). They pepped it up a bit for the live performance, which made it even better. Tomer Z gave a great drum performance--adding extra fills throughout the entire show. I really enjoyed everyone's performance. Aviv did really well, and since he writes most of the music/lyrics, he deserves a lot of credit for the show. Thank you, Aviv! There were a few moments of feedback issues and the occasions when the voices weren't meshing well (a bit out of tune here and there), plus a difficult ending to one song, but overall, the performance was better than I expected from what I have seen in videos. Wish they could have kept playing all night! Great job, guys!

I wasn't sure how they would play out live since the bulk of their material is pretty laid back pop...but they rocked it. This was easily the best show I have seen since Porcupine Tree were here in 2009. There is a great synergy between Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen. Steve Wilson...what can I say, the greatest innovator in music today. See the show, you will go home feeling alive and well.

I'm going to make this short and simple. Blackfield was amazing. Aviv and Steven were highly energetic and played all their best songs form their 3 albums. Jordan Rudess, the pianist from Dream Theater, was also a plus for an opening act.

Was giddy with delight when I heard they were coming to Boston. I ve seen PT several times but never any of SW other projects. This was one show I was looking forward to and I was not disappointed. The band had a tight sound and SW and Aviv were the perfect co-front men. They did song songs from all three CD s and the sound quality was pretty decent. Going in I had no idea how many other people in the Boston area had even heard of this band. I don t know if it was sold out but it was pretty packed. They played for about an hour and 45 and the evening flew by. I could not name a particular stand out since every song they did was performed to perfection though I am on a cloud every time SW pulls out some lead guitar. Aviv did well on his piano solos as well as rhythm guitar both electric and acoustic. The opening duo was some acoustic version of a band I ve never heard of but other s sure did as they were mouthing the words to the songs. Great show, and I would definitely see them again.

Steven Wilson is a musical genius. Though not nearly as technical or nor pretty as the amazing chord progressions as other SW projects, this is a good band. Straight forward, basic, but still a great show.

Blackfield rocked the Royale on Saturday night! They not only performed much of their newest cd, Welcome to My DNA, but many songs from their previous 2 cds. Every song was as good or better than their recordings. The crowd was especially enjoyable as they sang along and rocked with every tune. Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen have a very special relationship that shines through as they perform together and the whole band is a group of exceptionally talented musicians. If you ever have a chance to see this band, don't hesitate. They are well worth the trip even if you have to travel from afar. Blackfield will absolutely rock your heart and soul! Also, 2 members of the band Anathema warmed up the audience prior to Blackfield taking the stage. Their sound was unique and very enjoyable and, with any luck, they will bring their entire band to the states before year's end. Both Anathema and Blackfield gave their Boston audience an awesome and memorable show!

Really Enjoyed the concert. The band was having a goodtime as well as the audience. I have seen Blackfield before but this show seemed tigher than the last ones and the new songs were excellent. Like a fine wine they get better. Anathema acoustic was fantastic all the way too. Glad to see Blackfield bring a band like that out with them on the road.
