Ben Folds

BEN FOLDS IN CONCERT:Ben Folds has paved the way for piano-driven pop-punk since the late 80's, developing a major cult following along the way. Sporting his signature square-framed glasses, the former Ben Folds Five frontman performs his hit-filled sets with an energy that can't be matched, pounding the piano keys with intensity while belting out hits like "You Don't Know Me" and "Rockin' the Suburbs." Folds takes a fresh approach on his 2014 tour, performing a newly composed piano concerto for fans on his self-described "tour of symphonic proportions" The Ben Folds Orchestra Experience. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Ben Folds started his music career playing with bassist friend Millard Powers under the name Majosha in the late '80s, frequently performing at fraternity parties and bars near North Carolina's Duke University.

Positively spectacular. Third time I've seen him, and so far, the best. He's simply a perfect entertainer. Crowd was actually awesome as well. No buttheads talking constantly through the show, which was the main problem last time I saw him at Cleveland HOB.

Ben Folds has had an amazing career. Over that career he s been a prolific songwriter. All this comes to a glorious head at his paper airplane request tour. The first set was a predetermined group of his music where he explains the origin of the songs he. Then there s a break where you grab some paper. When he comes back for the second set the fans write their requests in the form of paper airplanes and fly those paper airplanes to the stage. He then picks 10 at random for what ends up being a magical ending. In this particular evening he ended with the luckiest. Which is particular special for me since this is my 10th wedding anniversary and that was the song that my wife and I danced to in our wedding! Overall something I think that was very very special that I feel blessed to have been a part of! Tall Heights opened for him and I must add here that they were an incredible band that I ve never heard of! Well worth your time to check them out!

We got to experience Ben Folds before the show and during. It was amazing! He was funny and down to earth. We felt like we were listening to a friends we have known for years. So entertaining and a joy to listen too.

I have waited years to see Ben Folds in concert, and the House of Blues was the perfect venue. He and his band have so much energy and love to get the audience involved. The setlist was a good mixture of new songs as well as older material that everyone loves. I will jump on the chance to see Ben Folds again whenever he comes back to my neck of the woods.

Ben Folds never disappoints! This was a phenomenal show. Ben played a lot of his old songs and threw a solo set in there which was really cool to hear. He even played "One Down" and "The Secret Life of Morgan Davis" (the latter I had never heard). Awesome performance.

Ben Folds and fellow musicians gave a spectacular performance--a high energy, non-stop concert. I stood up front, which is fortunate since I'm somewhat less than tall. I loved the different percussion instruments used. The House of Blues made a good venue for him.

Ben Folds, as usual, played a fantastic performance. Venue is relatively small and the atmosphere was great. Only complaints: anyone under 21 could NOT stand by the stage and instead had to sit down up on the second floor (the view was still perfect though).

Loved the atmosphere and the opening act was one of the MUCH better relative no-name groups I have ever heard. I've seen Ben Folds in concert multiple times and he never fails to put on a good, entertaining, interactive show.

The show was absolutely fantastic. Opening up for Ben was Kate Miller Heidke. Quite the gem of Australia if you ask me. Her current single "Are you F*cking kidding me?" is quite the fun song. And Ben was as good as ever. With a bit of a hiccup during "Bitch Went Nuts", he invited the crowd to remind him what his lyrics were. And the surprise drum solo livened up the place. Great crowd interaction as usual, and taking requests from the crowd was a treat. All in all, a brilliant show.

I am long-time BF and BFF fan and have been wanting to see him for quite a while. I consider "Forever and Ever Amen" as one of best albums from the 90s. Maybe I caught him on an off night but the music set wasn't inspiring at all. Notable Positives: "Too Late" (he said this was a request someone made that night, so I am betting it isn't routine), "Landed" , "Army", "One Angry Dwarf", & "The Luckiest." Their were times he rocked the drums on stage which was pretty cool. He did have a few moments of story-telling which I (personally) like. What was missing? Real audience connection!!! He kinda give off the I am grander than thou vibe. I am sure some die-hard fans will disagree because they see him through rose-color glasses, but am a pretty big fan myself (have all his albums, solo and group) and the missing connection was undeniable. He never even said "thank you for coming out" or showed any appreciation for supporting him and his music. What killed me is that he didn't play "brick" or some of his kooky covers he is known for. I know BF is bigger than one song but how do you not play the only chart topper (Brick) and song that made you a mainstream star? Lame. Search YouTube for Sirradiodude to find videos I've posted of the concert.

I honestly didn't know quite what to expect - I only really knew Ben Folds from the Ben Folds Five days and don't have any of his music in my personal collection, but I knew I Iiked his style of music. His performance was incredible - I'm not sure I've ever seen an artist give so much on stage. He KILLED on the piano. In between, when speaking to the audience he was intelligent and quite funny. I was very, very impressed and would see him again in a heartbeat! GO! You will be glad you did.

Ben Folds played another great show. The show was only Ben and a piano, which was fantastic. I have seen him before with his drummer and bassist, both are very talented but it was great to see just Ben. He played some classics as well as a couple new songs from the upcoming album release (Sept, 2010). Over all a great show.

I saw Ben Folds at Regency Park last year and looked forward to hearing him at Memorial Auditorium with a different sound. I knew that it was unlikely that he would play "Bitches Ain't Shit" because of the venue. I was treated to a different sound with the same rockin' energy with several hits like "Brick", "Army", and "One Angry Dwarf". He had as much energy with a symphony as he did with his rock band! In fact, there are songs that he played that sounded better with a symphony (like "Steven's Last Night In Town")! He had to keep the language upscale but let the audience do his dirty work! :-) It was amazing! Recommended for all Ben Folds Fans. Loved seeing him where he got his start, in NC!

The opening act Tall Heights was great!! With the opening act, the performance was just over 3 hours, and entertaining every minute. Ben Folds was simply remarkable. The way his mind works, in a live performance, is unlike any musician I've seen. He is able to take familiar, favorite songs and add spectacular riffs on the piano. The audience not only sings along, he guides them into three-part harmonies to sing along. And the paper airplane submissions - well, that's just pure fun. Saw him in a small venue - just Ben and a piano - and it was an inspired and inspiring evening.

Ben has such a rapport with the audience and his fans love him for it. He delivered a solid show full of energy, great music, and witty commentary. The airplane requests allowed him to perform other songs he may not have included, because he probably knew they would be requested via airplane. The short intermission was welcome, then on to the airplane requests! It was fun and really got the crowd on their feet. I catch Ben every time he comes to town and it is never the same show twice. He is a consummate professional, a wonderful entertainer, and one hell of a guy! Long live Ben Folds.

My wife and I got the VIP package where we got to watch Ben's soundcheck, and had advance opportunity to access the bar and merchandise table. It was well worth it. We also got a ticket for a free drink. Ben's soundcheck was fun to watch; he interacted with the small crowd who were there and took requests. When one of his more obscure songs came up, he called out to us for someone to Google the key of the song and the words! After the soundcheck was done, we had about 30-45 minutes to look at the merchandise, get drinks, seats, etc. before the general admission crowd came in. During that time, the opening act, Tall Heights, did their soundcheck. Note for Express Live patrons: if you get in early, there is a row of seats and small tables upstairs at the ring of the railing overlooking the venue. There's maybe 50 seats total in that format, and we wished we'd known about them, We ended up standing at the railing separating the back part of the of the lower level and the pit, which gave us great sight lines and easy access to the bar and bathrooms. Ben Folds puts on a great show no doubt about it. The first part of the show was a predetermined set of about 10 songs, and after a short intermission was the "Paper Airplane" part where you made a paper airplane with a song request on it which you tossed on stage and he at random picked one up and played the song contained on it. A great way to take requests! His musicianship is beyond compare, and his rapport with the audience is very engaging. At one point, he finished a song on piano, and a roadie came out with a floor tom and drumsticks. He started to play on the tom while walking over to another part of stage, while other roadies built a drum set around him as he played! He then did a great drum solo. I can't say enough about seeing Ben Folds live or the Express Live venue- I'd recommend both to anyone!

Ben Folds is a musical genius and a very interesting man to spend a few hours with. Just him and a piano is all you need. The venue is small enough that everyone has a great view, but the sound is far from quiet. Ben's second set was all-request via paper airplanes that the audience flew onto the stage before he started. I was beyond impressed that he was so able to jump into one song after another with no planning. Reasonable ticket prices and an easy-to-navigate neighborhood and venue made it a great show that I hope he does again soon. We will DEFINITELY be back to the Basie ASAP. I purchased tickets as part of the VIP Fan Soundcheck experience and it was SO WORTH IT!! We had access to the pre-show soundcheck which was like...50 people sitting in front of the stage while Ben warmed up. He had us yell out songs and he'd play snippets of them. The show itself was incredible - because of the VIP tickets, we were sitting in the fourth row and it felt super intimate. Excellent concert, just Ben Folds sitting at a piano, singing his songs, with participation from the audience. He told many stories about his songs and his experiences, such a charismatic performer, like having him visit you with his music. Fun time, during the intermission he asked everyone to write down on a paper a song you wanted performed, then make into into a paper airplane, then throw it a the stage when he came back, wonderful image of hundreds of airplanes getting thrown onto the stage! Then he picked out a dozen and performed them. Great night!

The show was great, I've been to many Folds shows and this was right up there with the best of them. But our seats were front row on the far left side. Because Ben's piano was further back on the stage, we couldn't see anything except for maybe a glimpse of the drummer through a metal grate. I paid a premium for those tickets and they were worthless. We ended up moving to the high balcony where there were empty seats. It was a new way to take in a show. Is it someone's job to consider each seat has a decent vantage point based on the stage design?

My husband and I absolutely loved this show! Ben Folds and yMusic were totally phenomenal, as was Dotan who opened. Unfortunately, there were more than a few people who came to the show expecting to see Ben play stuff like "Whatever and Ever, Amen" and this wasn't exactly that type of show. Watched Ben Folds for the first time and it was great! The Piedmont Wind Symphony played Christmas songs first, then Ben Folds came out and they played together on his songs. While Ben Folds may not be everyone's cup of tea, if you like well written songs, both musically and lyrically, as well as piano and small orchestral ensemble pieces - this is a sure thing. Other than the occasional (and often not subtle) curse words, I find Ben Folds to write engaging, brilliant music. Add to that an amazingly talented group of instrumentalists (violin, cello, flute, piccolo, trumpet, french horn, clarinet, bass clarinet) otherwise known as Y-Music and you get the best of small orchestra/symphony with fun piano music as well as a show. Ben's newest album is such a welcome departure from what you hear everyday on the radio - so if you love top 40 and auto tune, this is probably not the show for you. If you truly appreciate musical talent, this is hard to beat.

Ben Folds was great. Terrific artist. Great energy. The yMusic 6 piece group backing him up were very talented. Only issue was that the instrumental ensemble often drowned out Ben. Difficult to understand his lyrics. I think it was an issue with hiw the engineer was balancing the various mics being used. Thought he'd realize it and compensate but never did. Still a good show.

We have seen Ben Folds alone, with a band and with Ben Folds Five and this show was one of his stronger tour date and performances. The venue (Montalvo) helped. It is a smallish and intimate outdoor setting and it complimented the solo nature of this tour (it was just Ben and a Piano as well as a small drug set brought out for only one song !?). He pretty much only played a few tunes off his "Soon to be released" album/CD and then opened it up to requests,....which lead to a series of stories and commentaries that make seeing Ben Folds worth it. He is articulate, funny and a solid signer songwriter and story teller. Well worth it. We'd see him again in a minute.

I had never heard of Ben Folds. Got the tickets for Blue October. Ryan, their violinist, was absent, but they were still amazing as usual. Ben Folds was great too. I had intended to leave after Blue October, but ended up staying and enjoying his concert as well. The venue was amazing and the weather was perfect. I upgraded to VIP tickets. Loved the cash bar and private bathrooms. I crossed the lines and stood at the stage for Blue October then returned to the provided lounge chairs for the more mellow Ben Folds. Oh, there was an opening opening band, apparently locals called The Killigans, the genre was Irish Punk or something. My only thought on them is I might kill the next person I see with an accordion and it would be considered justifiable homicide because after that, I could prove PTSD free and clear.

The show was amazing! I have been waiting over ten years to see him live again, and he did not disappoint! It was so great to bring my husband and share the experience with him. I was so happy (even teared up a bit!) when Ben played The Luckiest, which was our first dance at our wedding 5 years ago. There was a great mix of songs, old and new, and I was impressed that Ben took no break, just kept going for us. Thanks Ben for a wonderful night! I left the Ogden with a perma-grin!!

This was a great show! Ben rocked and kept on rocking for hours! High Caliber quality performance, no auto-tune or lip syncing, Ben's the real deal for sure! His new songs with Nick Hornby are a fantastic display of his voice and music talents as well as Nick's writing abilities! This concert was Awesome!!!

Ben Folds has terrific music, but live, he is even more incredible! This is the fourth time I have seen Ben in concert and this time was truly amazing, especially since he sang a lot of his new songs from Lonely Avenue. I also loved the new style of T-shirts they were selling. I was a little disappointed that Ben did not come back out for a second encore like he normally does, but singing Not the Same as the encore was awesome!

Ben Folds was absolutely fabulous! He is so charismatic on stage, and even when he makes mistakes, he stays real and in the moment, and makes up for them by adding in improvised apologies. He has so much energy and presence, and his music is AMAZING. The venue was also great - even though I was sitting in the back of the balcony on the left, I could see the stage perfectly and the sound was great.

It's hard for me to understand how a current two-time Grammy winner and superlatively talented singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist such as Sarah Jarosz can accept a 20 minute opening slot for an obnoxious piano pounder. Bobby Cudd, if you're responsible for this mismatch, please don't do it again.

One man and a piano, who would have thought he could fill the concert hall with so much sound. Phenomenal act. Would see again if he were close.

I went to this concert as a courtesy to my sister who is a huge fan. Before this concert, I had only heard a few of his songs. However, seeing him in concert gave me a completely new appreciation for Ben Folds. First of all, the man is just an entertainer at his core. His energy is contagious, and he gets the audience involved. I was sitting there just wishing I knew the words to all the songs so I could fully join in on the fun. Second, I have never in my life seen someone play the piano like he does. There were moments where I was just in awe at how quickly and effortlessly his hands moved across the keys. The man can even put his fist into the piano keys in the middle of a song and still make it sound good. Even if you aren't a fan of his music style, any music lover would appreciate his mastery of the piano at the very least.

This was the 6th time I've seen Ben. I've seen him once with the Nashville Symphony, twice with Ben Folds Five and his last tour with yMusic. This is the 2nd time I've seen him solo and I have loved both times. In fact, I'd say they were my favorite of the 6 shows. I love his music and he is funny as hell. I loved the paper airplanes- despite the drunk chick who kept trying to take Ben to a bar! Respect the Process!

Ben Folds was great, i bought the tickets for my daughter and the seats were fantastic, not sure there is a bad seat in the theater (Bijou Knoxville). He played furiously and wonderfully. The flying of paper airplanes with suggestions for songs was fun and these were were used for the entire second half. The Bijou is a classic old theater with it quirks but it is beautiful. Only gripe was we were in front of a young "Lady" probably dunk (by the number of beer cans under her seat) who made high pitch screams at the end of each song. Pretty sure any ear wax in my ears was dissolved. Yeah we all know you like Ben Folds lady!

If you could only ever go to one live music show in your life, I think I could recommend Ben without any reservations. The man is a master performer, and great at engaging with the audience. And truly a great pianist. I've heard full bands that didn't fill the room with sound as well as he does with just a piano. I've seen him once before, it was probably close to 10 years ago now. He's 50 now, but seems to have lost absolutely no energy.

I saw Ben Folds for the first time just a few days ago, in Des Moines, Iowa. It was just him and his piano. I always grew up listening to Rockin' the Suburbs, with little listening experience attributed to his later albums. Let's say this: he was absolutely amazing. I can't get over how great his show was. I went by myself to the concert (which I never do) and was a little nervous, mostly because I was seated between two complete strangers at a sold out show. I knew it was only going to be Ben and a piano with no other instruments involved. I can't imagine him seeing him live any other way. It was absolutely phenomenal. His skills as a pianist were unreal to watch in person, as well as his hilarious, clever, and sometimes heart wrenching songs. He was able to improvise songs, and even made one up while we were watching. And I can't stress this enough: he was so involved with the audience that it made the concert experience that much better. Bottom line: I would recommend him to anyone who wants an amazing show (HECK, even those of you who want a regular show). I already told most of my siblings and practically all my friends that we are seeing him next time he is in Des Moines. See Ben when he enters your area. You will not regret a single penny of your ticket.

Ben Folds put on an incredible show, playing songs from throughout his career. He even took requests from the audience in a "paper airplane" format. He shared stories about most of the songs, and his piano abilities were impressive as well. A "can't miss" show.

My wife, daughter & her boyfriend are HUGE fans of Ben. We all attended together. I've enjoyed his music on many occasions. I am now a fan. It started off a bit slow but after all, it's just him & a piano. It got better. The second set was ALOT better. Before intermission, he asked us to write down song suggestions on paper he provided, then fold it into paper airplanes. At the end of intermission, there'd be a countdown when to launch them onto the stage. It was BRILLIANT. He then proceeded to build his set from the suggestions & told stories about himself & the songs he played. The Egg is a very intimate venue & it was a most enjoyable show.

Like every single time I've seen Ben Folds play over the years, he rocked. He is a musical genius like no other and a solid showman. The venue was great. It's always cool to see how many people bring their kids to his shows and how the kids just sit there mesmerized. Awesomeness!

Flawless arpeggios, storytelling, and audience singalongs illuminated the evening as I took my friend to see Ben Folds for his birthday. The intimate crowd of loyal followers made his performance exciting, fun and accessible, even for myself, the casual fan. Mr. Folds knows how to get the most out of his instrument. He bangs on it with thunderous reckless abandon, masterfully uses dynamics for full emotional effect on quieter songs, and even taps out rhythms on his microphone. This was a fully engaging experience, complete with song requests (although I won't ruin how he took the requests), tongue in cheek humor and just some brilliant singing and songwriting. The man should have been bigger than he was based on his sheer talent and fantastic live show alone, which speaks to his humility and ability and desire to entertain more so than to be a star. He does his music the way he wants to, and his fans respect him for it. Rightfully so. He's a small secret to his biggest fans, and they'll gladly keep it that way.
