Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale

Due in part to front man Charlie Fink’s distinctively abysmal voice, Noah and the Whale characterized themselves as a quirky fixture among the alternative genre for their trademark fusion of folk and electronic elements in 2008, produced by frequent employment of the fiddle, harmonium, harmonica and ukelele. Over the course of the next two albums, 2009's The First Days of Spring and 2011’s Last Night on Earth, changes to the band's lineup, including the exit of singer Laura Marling, resulted in defining shifts to Noah and the Whale's original sound. Their latest album, Heart of Nowhere, premiered May 6, 2013 via Mercury Records.

BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER BEEN TO! Charlie has great presence and banters well with the crowd. The vibe was lively and fun and so easy to dance to. They somehow made their already amazing music a thousand times better!

This was easily in the top 3 best shows I've ever seen. I was unprepared for the sheer amount of face melting intensity they blew out of their amps. Seriously, five English gentlemen in three piece suits should not have been able to blast that strong of a whirlwind of music. Their albums produce music more on the whimsical side, but their concert had the electricity of a thunderstorm in Zeus' pants.

The opening act, Bahamas, did a phenomenal job. Their lead had a very welcoming, engaging stage presence and the music didn't disappoint. Noah and the Whale played a long set, including an unplanned acoustic song when there were power issues due to a storm and a two song encore. The violinist had great energy and at times stole the show, though each member had excellent energy and performed at a top tier level.

Excellent job. The Bahamas were spectacular, but they did not come close to stealing the show from these guys. Their music is awesome, and they have a great stage presence. I would recommend to anyone.

I absolutely love Noah and the Whale. I will definitely see them again when they come back to town. They're amazing. Everything from the lights to the unique spin they put on a few of their songs to play them live. They put on a great show. I will forever adore NATW. Tom and Fred came outside the venue after the show and we got to speak with them for a breif moment. It was so nice.

They were extremely energetic. The lead singer has an a very striking, consistent voice. They emote fantastic musical talent. They also talked to the crowd and really made them apart of the show. I loved what they did with the lights. They went flashed along with the music.

Great sound and production. The lighting guy did some fun things with the chandeliers in the El Rey. Noah and the Whale's set seemed a bit short clocking in at just around an hour but it was a great show.

It's been almost a year and a half since NATW has toured the US, since they took time off to write their third album. The wait has been worth it. The new album is an awesome progressive contemporary rock album. Like their previous two albums there is a thematic sound to it that is totally unique while at the same time clearly an expression of the music that has influenced their young lives to date. Tom Waits and Tom Petty and the Velvet Underground all ring through loud an clear, but the album is still truly a sound that is umistakably NATW. Back to reviewing the show. It was great. I went both nights to see if they vary in their performances. Turns out, they did almost the exact same set list both nights in almost the same order, which was fine b/c most of it was their new album and it's great to hear them rock out. They came out dressed to the nines, in 3 piece suits and ties. They may be young, but they are not foolish and their dapper duds are merely an extension of their sophisticated sound. I was a little surprised that they played 5 Years Time both nights for the encore, but they did play it with an alternative edge, which was a nice twist. I can't wait to see them in June at Irving Plaza.

Flew from Charlotte to NYC for this show and it was totally worth it. N&TW killed it. Their energy proved that they love playing their music. The mixture of instramentation was beautiful to hear. Charlie sang heart-breaking songs win a grin looming on his face. I can't wait to see them again and hope they hit the souheast US next time. Go see them if they are in your area!

Watch out, Noah and the Whale is on the rise. From the very first note, of the very first song, Give a Little Love, I knew that this band was everything I'd hoped they'd be and more. The way they can move from a melancholy serenade and transition seamlessly into a crescendoing, high-energy, all out rock explosion, will make your jaw drop open in amazement. Every person in the band is a vital component, each sharing the soul and heart of the band's music, equally. At times, the rhythm of the drums were like an entire percussion section of an orchestra, then there's Tom's fiddle which he plays w/ such passion that the strings on his bow are snapping, then there's Whale, the bassist who looks like he's in another world, rocking out every moment he's on stage, lost in an ecstasy of music, then there's our lonely hearted Charlie, who sings every line like he's reliving the experience of lyrics all over again. Not to forget the amazing, vocal harmonies and instrumental synergy these band members have when they are on stage together...you want them to play all night because their music is like food, it feeds you, it gives you energy and life. You walk out of the show feeling uplifted. And, they're cute and British, could you ask for anything more? Bottom line, these guys are the real deal...British invasion, you say? I think so.

Nothing bothers me more than going to a show to watch a band suddenly rely on autotune, or worse, lip sync with a recording. It bothers me almost as much when a band takes too much artistic liberty and ruins their own music by playing unrecognizable 'live versions' of each song. Noah and the Whale found a very happy medium. Lead vocalist has apparent talent, both with the vocals and on guitar, and each of the other band members is awesome with their respective instruments. I recorded each song as it was played with my phone, and the only thing I wish I could change about what was recorded was the group of annoying drunk girls behind me who talked through the whole show. Hahaha.

Great show in a great venue. Noah and the Whale showed excellent musicianship, with some great new arrangements for some of their songs that would otherwise be a little bleak for a live show. Good audience rapport, great music, and the first concert for my 13 yr old son was a perfect show.

This was an excellent concert in a small intimate venue. The set list was fantastic. There was a small glitch with the violin - may have been a sound board/mixing issue - but other than that the sound was excellent. Even got to meet the band after the performance.

Noah and the whale is one of the most amazing bands and they are even better live. They were actually hanging out outside the venue and I got the chance to meet them. They are super humble and amazing people! Their performance was personal and not many artists interact with the crowd as much as they did. Very few times do I like the band more live than on their CD. They were definitely a band that will stay in my heart forever.

I was in Chicago for work and decided to see Noah and the Whale since I wouldn't be able to attend their show in Atlanta. At first I was a little turned off to a show in the House of Blues since its a chain and there are so many amazing venues in Chicago. Boy was I wrong. Although all house of blues have pretty much the same set up, I was pleasantly surprised. There was a good crowd but I was able to get a spot next to the bar on the left side of the stage. I had a perfect, close view of the stage. The service from the bar was impeccable. The band put on an amazing set as did the opener, Bonzie, who reminded me a bit of Florence Welch. Great show. Don't underestimate the House of Blues.

I was mildly interested in this band when I bought the tickets (plus my girlfriend loves the original opening act, LP, who later cancelled) but I was blown away when I saw them live. they have a great stage prescense, talented musicians, and an energy that is not conveyed in their recordings. I was impressed and I would go see them again.

Traveled from Detroit to Chicago to see LP, Noah and the Whale opener. Was disappointed to learn that she was replaced. Though the replacement was not my thing, NATW were outstanding. I was not familiar with this band, but every song was catchy and the performance was polished. Also, if you have never been to the House of Blues, I would highly recommend. We were lucky to snag a table which are available with a 2 drink minimum. I gave a 4 star only because the opener I wanted to see was canceled and the replacement was no match.

I only knew a few bits and pieces of N&TW songs, but the concert was engaging the whole way through. The undersinging of the lead singer, and the catchy grooves of the band were almost as entertaining as the whole audience singing along. I thought I'd miss the female singer, but no. The band members sang great along with the lead. The content was whimsical and poetic. The mood like an Irish pub where the whole village can go and sing along. These guys are not to be missed.

Amazing show! Heard about Noah and the Whale from a friend, he came up to visit and we went to the show. Only knew a few of their songs from hearing them a few times, and I thought it was going to be a pretty mello, folk-y show. Totally wrong! I loved every song, and these guys rocked out HARD!
