Michael puts on a fantastic show. I hope to see him again someday. The venue is great. No seat is bad since it's small. The food and service were very good. Pricey...but you get what you pay for. I will be back. Oh and I even got to meet him!!!

What a fantastic show - Michael was wonderful, the setlist and the band were great and the venue just perfect! My friends and I had a fabulous time! We can't wait to see Michael again!
Great concert! Michael Franks has so much control over his smooth, silky voice. And, his choice of songs was wonderful! Loved them all. The crowd let him know how much they enjoyed it, which is always good. If Mike comes to your neck of the woods, be sure and catch him. I've been a fan since Skin Dive and was a real treat to finally get to see him in person. Got to say "Hey" before the concert, too, when he walked by to get in to the House of Blues. Just a great 'Rainy Night in New Orleans'. Oh, and check out Phillip Manuel, too. He was great! Wonderful singer and even better personality! He's got a new cd, PM. Check it out.

Finally scored tickets to see my fave Jazz artist Michael Franks & it was indescribable and phenomenal. Between the talented musicians which accompanied him & the sound quality I was swepted away!! I was literally inches from him & the speakers & nothing was distorted or loud. Michael Franks sounded as good if not better in person as he does on his many recordings. And I can't stop raving about THE BIRCHMERE!!! That place is a dream!! The pictures on the website does not do it justice at all!!! Everything was pristine, cool & dreamy. And even though I had dinner before going in (which I regret) all I tried was a desert & I was floored at how wonderful everything tasted & how the service was great!!! I will go again and again!!! THE BIRCHMERE ROCKS!!!

I have been listening to Michael Franks since I was 16 years old. I'm 42 now and am so grateful to be able to see him in concert. I've gone to 5 of his shows in 3 years and he always plays my favorite songs. This year was even better...his band was great and he let the more jazzy side of his songs come to life! I will always be a fan!!!

On June 11, 2009, I saw Michael Franks at the Birchmere but first let s talk about Lili Anel, the open act. She appeared on stage with just her guitar and a base player. Quite a presence; a rubenesque, funny, lively Latina whose songs are musical translations of her experiences, many of them having to do with her personal relationships. She gets great sound and momentum from her two piece group. Well worth seeing. I ve been a fan of Michael Franks since my freshman year in college, 1979 when I stumbled across his album Tiger in the Rain in the record store. From that point on I was hooked. Michael turned me on to Charles Burchfield, Mate Tea, Jardin Botanico, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and the Yellow House. Michael s slow, methodic almost talking way singing pulls you in to his musical world. The music is the canvas and his lyrics the paint that he combines to create musical pictures filled with thoughts, places, feelings and humor. He sang many favorites like, Eggplant, Popsicle Toes, The Lady Wants to Know, In The Eye Of The Storm, B'wana - He No Home, Rainy Night In Tokyo, Now Love Has No End and Scatsville. The band is made up of very competent members; a sax man who also plays the flute, a base player, drummer, keyboardist and accompanying vocalist. Listening to Michael Franks is always enjoyable and an adventure through the arts.

Been listening to Michael Franks since college (30 years ago), and wife and I have been seeing him live for the past 10 years in a variety of large and small venues. He seems to do best in smaller venues like the Birchmere (and Ram's Head in Annapolis), and his June 11 show at the Birchmere was no exception. He was in good voice, this tour's band was really good (he made a major upgrade to his horn player), and Veronica Nunn was thankfully with him as well for backing vocals. His set list includes the expected hits ("Popsicle Toes", "Rain Night in Tokyo"), as well as nice mixture of older and newer material. Our first time at the Birchmere - a functional (its former warehouse/flex space) but workable venue with decent food and drink and acceptable sound. Its open seating, so get there early. We'd see Michael Franks there again.

His voice is still the same after 30 years. He played some of the favorites but would have needed an extra 90 minutes to include everything. I had never seen him live before and would see him again in a heartbeat. The band was fantastic and a very talented group of musicians. You have to see him live to appreciate how the intonations in his voice occur. Classics from Eggplant to the whimsical Popsicle Toes. His blending of music and lyrics is truly unique!!!

Michael Franks onstage at the Birchmere was outstanding. Often a singer's recordings and the real event are inconsistent. Michael Franks was the real deal. We enjoyed the entire show. Michael appears to be a down-to-earth kind of guy as well as an accomplished performer. His female accompanist had a great voice and worked well with him. You could tell by the audience (a packed house) response that his fans were loving every minute. We give the show a big five stars.

I am a huge fan of Michael franks. His ability to write music is amazing. His words are wimsicle, the jazz very smooth, and full bodied. I own all of his cds. I have seen him perform about 8 times. Why I gave him 3 stars is because for some odd reason he chooses to use a very low volume to his voice. The rest of the band sounds impecable. This night was the lowest I had heard him sound of all the others. He needs to raise his volume at least 20 - 25 %minimum. Also song selections could be changed to include some amazing material that he hardly ever plays. For example. These are from his latest cd/ if I could make september stay/ feathers from an angels wing/ id rather be happy than right. From rendezvous in Rio /the cool school/ the critics are never kind/ the chemistry of love/the question is why. from dragonfly summer/ string of pearls/ you were meant for me. and from the best of them all barefoot on the beach/ a walk in the rain/ when you smiled at me/why spring aint here/double talk/everytime she whispers. the entire album really. This is most of his very best material, and yet never plays it.It befuddles me. But he will keep on playing over and over again songs that are mediocure by comparison .

I found Michael Franks show very generic. He had no real engagement with audience. The set was a little shy of 1 hour. Which was 6-7 songs, keep in mind the band played solo for minutes while he stood in the back watching like it was gum on the wall. He seemed so unexcited to perform. The band was great! His voice sounded great! His performance was not!

Once again we had the golden opportunity to see Michael Franks in person. His songs have moved me since his The Art of Tea with Popsicle Toes came out. I was hooked! The show at NJPAC in Newark DE was great....Michael did what he does best....quietly stands at the mic and sings those wonderful creations of his....his turn of phrase is phenomenal...he can paint a world-sized picture with just a few well chosen words, and the musicality of his arrangements is beyond wonderful. I'm a musician and appreciate the intricacies of his chords and wording. I hope Michael creates for many years to come. .

It truly feels good to be able to see and hear one of your longtime favorites perform right in your own backyard! The show brought back all the memories of sitting at home listening to album after album of some of my favorites! Michael Franks did not disappoint the many loyal fans. He did many of his popular songs.....Popsicle Toes, B'wana She No Home, When I Give My Love To You, Tiger In The Rain, Lady Want To Know,....I think you get the point! The band was very tight....although I would have loved to hear some of his former band member that played with him through the years David Sanborn, Randy Brecker, Kenny Barron, Steve Gadd, Ron Carter, etc.

Raul was unknown to me but had an interesting program of percussive guitar with amazing vocals and a nice warm up to Michael Franks. He played for a half hour. Micheal's band was amazing but I felt Michael might have done just enough to satisfy the postponement of last falls original date. His vocals were very hard to hear even after an audience member asked for increased volume on his vocals. Just two minutes prior to Michael's entrance onstage a crew member came on stage to remove his guitar-which he never played. It lead us to believe that perhaps he still is not feeling well as the hour he played with the band seemed like little more than a rudimentary practice. My wife and I are big fans of Michael and have been listening to his music for 40 years. The music was great, Michael's performance was not.

Having many Michael Franks CDs and seeing him and his band before (and LOVING it), I was quite disappointed in this show. The keyboardist seemed to be in love with himself and his abilities, and consequently tried too hard much of the time. Female vocalist was actually out of tune on the mid and lower notes, and was certainly not up to professional standards in my opinion. Drummer was excellent at all times, though his solo underwhelmed. Reeds player was competent on all the saxes, outstanding on the flute. Michael Franks seemed tired, and sounded that way as well. Possibly due to this being the second show that night. I don't know why either, as he sang sparingly. No energy! If I had to sum up this show in one word, that word would be "YAWN" . . .

Very, very short show, started at 7:40 turned up lights at 8:15! came back and played until 9:00. During the entire show he spent more time off stage, having his band members do solos, then he did performing. Didn't pay to hear a 5 minute keyboard solo or a 5 minute drum solo. Played a lot of old corny songs. Played one newer song. Been a fan for 30 years. Probably the last of his shows I will see.

He was amazing and played a perfect mix of mostly old favorites and some new teasers. His band and singer were outstanding and the evening was delightful. I would give him 5 stars, but the unfortunate portion of my review would be for BB Kings and the fact that they oversold the show. When we arrived 35 minutes early and were told we were 'late' and we managed to snag probably the last table (behind a pillar with no direct view of the stage or Michael Franks, but only of the big screens perched on the sides, it made for a less than great experience. Especially when the unruly SRO folks kept trying to find places to stand, often in our only viewing path. I recommend arriving an hour before the set and ordering food. It'll take at least that long for the well-meaning, but slow servers to get to you anyway.

Opening with just his Telecaster, Franks pulled the capacity crowd into his mellow yet exciting world at The Birchmere. Each successive song brought out yet another band member until the ensemble was complete and the audience had moved 4 tunes into the 90 minute 16 song set. Playing selections from throughout his decades long storied career, he freely showed off the talents of his backing group, frequently allowing them to step out and solo within the framework of the songs.

Any evening with Michael Franks is worthwhile. While this show didn't have the energy of previous engagements, it had something I did not see in the two other times I've seen Michael at the Birchmere: he started the show playing solo guitar, then slowly adding musicians with each song until the whole crew was on stage. Marvelous. Veronica Nunn on backup vocals was wonderful and had a chance to do some splendid solos. Charles Blenzig on keyboard was a perfect complement to Michael as always and had a lot of fun on "Monk's New Tune." I'm not familiar with the bassist but he was very good. Nor can I name the drummer but he was perfect for the music and provided an excellent solo. The Birchmere is a wonderful place for a pleasant evening with date or family, excellent food and very friendly and efficient wait staff.

On the way to this show, my wife asked if there was an opening act. I replied that there wasn't one listed, but certainly Michael Franks had a catalog that didn't require any other performers. The show started at 730 pm with just Michael on an electric guitar. Gradually, a female singer, an acoustic bass, drummer & keyboard player added the lineup. The performers were all very good, but the keyboard player was self indulgent at times, adding too many embellishments to the detriment of the songs. Michael & his performers moved through many of his classic songs from his earliest through later recordings. Around 830 pm, Michael started to say good night to the crowd and many of us looked at each other in disbelief. When the crowd's applause brought him back to the stage, he asked "do you want some more?" Someone near me replied "we want another set!" Exactly. At 9 pm, the performers bowed & exited the stage. The house lights came up and the crowd shuffled out. When I have gone to the Birchmere over the past 20+ years, I have always left around 10 pm. I have no issue with the quality of the show, but I left feeling short changed. I'm pretty sure many others did too.

The shows were rescheduled from November 15, 2014 due to illness (an adverse reaction to medication following emergency surgery). I was at the 1st show at 5pm and stayed for the 2nd one at 8pm. The Victoria Theater was close to full this time and had a more active audience. Raul Midon was the opening act again. As a one man band Raul did not have any difficulty to entertain the audience. This time he performed six songs. Michael was amazing as usual and supported by a great band consisting of Charles Blenzig (Piano), Sean Conly (Bass), Karel Ruzicka (Sax), Willard Dyson (Drums), Veronica Nunn (Vocals), and guest musician for this event Manolo Badrena (Percussion). The opening song was I really hope it's you which was not covered in the 1st set. Both Raul's and Michael's sets were longer. We listened to the great classics and as with the 1st show it was over in no time. Unfortunately no new songs despite he announced in 2014 that he will be working on his new album. I guess we all have to wait for the next year's gigs to hear them.

I missed the New Orleans show so yes I traveled to NJ- just for this show. Michael Franks has been my pinnacle of jazz artist that I adore ... Now! (Lol) Short story... My parents wore that Tiger in the Rain album out, and as a young child I hated it! (Why do we always listen to jazz?) Fast forward to my adult years - I've sought out his music and other jazz artist and many of his vinyl albums in my collection. I too listen to him all the time - but this time, my daughter 18yr old daughter adores "Eggplant" and "Popsicle Toes". Thank you Michael for your many years of music and hope that you come see NOLA again!

Michael Franks is the epitome of cool; Right there with such jazz greats as Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and Ella Fitzgerald. His songs are classics reaching all the way back to 1974 with Popsicle Toes to this year's Now that the Summer's Here, and even at 69 years old he keeps his music and presence fresh, lively and entertaining. His essentially solo guitar performances of Hideaway and Antonio's Song were special treats. His music remains appreciated at all age groups, from the Septugenarians to my 23 year old daughter who bought her own tickets as her own idea. We look forward to as much music from Michael as he cares to put out there, and hopefully to see him perform live for years to come.

I have listened to Micheal Franks since the 1970's and he never ceases to amaze me with every album he releases. His poetry is unmatched and his play on words is amazing. His sultry voice is still flawless!! This concert was everything I had hoped for and more. His songs took me to another place as I closed my eyes and listened with a smile on my face! The band members were lively and so talented. His female vocalist added beautiful harmonies and blended so well to make songs sound fuller. Wish I could have had a Kodak moment with him ; ) Thank you MIchael for touring again and I look forward to another concert soon! Even if I have to drive 5 hours again to see you!!! Excellent, everything I expected. He played a nice mix of all of his songs, with just the right amount of older stuff. His band was outstanding also. His backup vocalist, sax man, and bassist where truly unbelievable. The bass player used an upright and hit every note.. and there were a lot of notes. The venue however, the Houston House of Blues, was not that terrific. Sitting on folding chairs was acceptable, however, the noise from the back of the room, the area around the bar, was very distracting and down right rude to Mr Franks.

Vintage Mike at his best! He did a great job of taking us down memory lane with Love is a Tell Me All About It, Tiger in the Rain, and The Lady Wants to Know just to name a few. I was dying for Chez Nous and Baseball. Oh well! It was a really good show - even with the distraction of the selfish, boobed-out space job in the audience that found it necessary to interpret all of his songs through her ecentric dancing. Anywho, it was an awesome Valentine's Day treat! Bravissimo Mike!!

We have seen Michael Franks on a number of occasions. He has an extremely strong and loyal following. This guy is consistent and gives the crowd exactly what they are looking for- good music that sounds like the music that drew them to the artist and the event in the first place. Much of his show is like sitting back in your home with a drink and enjoying the experience. Folks in the audience can sing the sing, know all of the words, and can recognize each song after just a few notes. That is what ALL shows should be like.

The show was nice, I would have chosen some more songs from Sleeping Gypsy but the choice is probably different for everyone ... The band was perfect, but what to say about BB King Club : too many people - they probably sold twice the number of possible attendees, waiters running all around for almost the entire show, rude manners ... Never again in a place like that !

Great set list, great band - Michael Franks and his band really nailed it. The service at BB Kings leaves much to be desired (quite awful actually).

We love Michael Franks! This is strictly about B. B. Kings. We had to stand because of first come first serve and the sound system was horrible. My partner said never again at this venue. We will go see him in California next year.

Keiko Matsui was dynamic. You can't help but feel her enthusiasm in performing. The crowd loved her. Michael Franks voice was spot on. The band was tight. Music Director made sure the audience knew he was the music director. (poor taste) The crowd singing along was a tribute to how well they know his music! Disappointed in a venue that allows loud conversation in the hallway openings that spills into the seating area. Disrespectful to those in the last several rows. Very distracting. Would have enjoyed seeing Franks and Matsui without their chatter.

Show in Music Hall Performance Theater in Detroit. Great old hall from the 20's. Packed house. Keiko starts off for almost an hour and she brings it. Faster paced than MF and amazing what she can do on a piano. Tight 3-piece band backing her. Was amazed. Then, MF comes on. Fan for 25 yrs, but first time I've seen him. VERY clear why he's the headliner. Extra cool vocals and his band makes Keiko's band seem like the JV. Much different feel from MF as his vocals created a small, smoke-filled jazz club vibe. Very intimate lyrics and sound from him. Plays all hits (assuming since he only does a few shows a year, it's easy for the band to play these), which was fine with the crowd. Very appreciative audience who was very familiar with his work as everyone was singing along. If you're a fan and he comes around, make sure you see him.

Michael Franks proved, once again, to be the smooth, cool artist with his own sense of style. It was very well worth every penny. To hear the crowd sing along with him just added to an already great evening. Can't wait to see him again...

a Michael Franks concert is quite an experience. At first I was thinking, this guy is silly! standing up there whispering (softly singing?) some nonsensical poetry while the band plays. But somewhere in the second or third song his magic spell enveloped me and he looked like the coolest man on earth. Kind of like that "Most interesting man on earth" Dos Equis guy. I was thinking, "It would be really fun to hang out with Micheal Franks, but I'm probably too lame to be part of his posse." The band is composed of excellent musicians capable of inspiring virtuosity. He has many dedicated fans. We sat with some and they made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Was concerned about his recent health issues, but he brought a first class band that he let loose and his vocals were strong. The crowd loved the performance and so did I. Have been seeing him since the late 70s and look forward top seeing him again.

My wife and I loved the Michael Franks concert at BB Kings Blues Club. I've been a fan for over 30 years and this was the first time I finally got to see him perform. We were not disappointed. Also we had dinner at the club and I highly recommend the ribs, one of the best we've had. I had ribs in North and South Carolina and BB Kings was as good, maybe better...it was expensive but the food was delish.

I have been a lifelong fan of Michael Franks. I so anticipated this concert! So many great songs to look forward to! I didn't care what he chose to sing; I was so psyched! To me, he is one of the great jazz songwriters of the 20th Century. But Michael himself did not seem psyched at all. He sang in a barely audible voice. People yelled, "I can't hear you!" He turned in the direction of the voices, but nothing changed. I must say that I loved the band!!! Virtuosos, all. I didn't get their names, however, nor did I get much of Michael's banter between songs, because he spoke quite softly, as if only to the people seated front and center. The audience loved his every word. I knew many of the songs, so I knew what he was singing, but I found the experience frustrating. My friend next to me said, "He's boring. Every song sounds the same." I give this concert three stars because of the great band, and because I love Michael's songs and style. I am still a huge fan; but from now on, I'll have to be satisfied with listening to his recordings.

Michael Franks was awesome as usual! Unfortunately he was paired with Rachelle Ferrell which isn't a good combination at all. To add insult to injury he was the opening act for her. So after being put in this mellow mood with Franks, the audience was subjected to this loud voice with a very limited song catalog. Ferrell has a strong voice but relies too much on antics. I thought it was a lazy, loosely prepared performance by her which diluted the overall positive experience of the evening.

Acoustics were off somewhat perhaps because we were near the wall. The crowd of younger adults were quite rude to Rachelle which was quite embarrassing to Detroit. I love both artists and both were great!!!!!! Rating Amazing.

Micheal Franks performance was excellent!!! But the audience behavior was rude and disrespectful (yelling and screaming for him to sing their favorite songs was unacceptable conduct). To make matters worse two patrons were seating in our seats and refused to move. The usher escorted us out the auditorium and called the manager. In which they still refuse to move. So we waited in the foyer for thirty minutes while Randy Elliott tried to locate us some seats. By the time we were seated Micheal Franks was leaving the stage. So, we did not have a good time! In addition to this, I have already spoke to the Manger Mr. Mitchell and he is looking into the matter and hopefully he will make the necessary changes in procedures and make a mends with us as customers. Also, I hope ticketmaster will post my experience and not just the amazing reviews. My voice should be heard by other individuals that might feel the same or had less than a wonderful time. With that being said, please do not disclose this information because a lot of people were complaining about the atmosphere.

I have been listening to Michael Franks for 30+ years and simply love his lyrics, music, and jazz style. I saw him for the first time live in 2012 and have been trying to get to every concert since then that I can. I have seen Michael and Band perform 4 times now and it really is hard to put into words how phenomenal this group of musician are together. This really is Jazz at its very best. Cool as a cucumber jazz. If given the opportunity you really don't want to miss this show. Enjoy~

An unbelievable show! Marion Meadows got us off to an excellent start by blessing us with his incredible smoov grooves sound! After all these years, i cant believe Michael Franks is still as smooth as ever!! Rachelle Ferrell has easily got to be one of the best, one of the most talented, one of the most Underrated singers of all time!! Wish she wouldve done "her" a lil bit more, but she was still great!

I had never been to a Michael Franks or Rachelle Ferrell concert but love their music. Thus, I was excited about having a date night to see them with my new husband. However, after the beautifully relaxing Michael Franks set, we were devastated by the lack of professionalism and singing, I might add, of Rachelle Ferrell. A dispute arose between her and her 'fans' and several people left. We decided to give it a little more time but it was clear that her attitude was horrible and that she just was not into pleasing the crowd. In fact, when asked to sing she replied, "I'm just going to do me. I'm too old to care about what you think." Did I mention that she was HORRIBLE? I would kindly like half my money returned to me.

Rachelle Ferrell refuses to sing the songs her audience wants to hear. She told the audience " I'm not here to lease you. I'm here to please myself. I come first". The audience did boo this performance. She clearly lost her audience.
