Amanda Palmer

Amanda Palmer

Provocative, irreverent, controversial and wildly creative, Amanda Palmer is a fearless singer, songwriter, playwright, blogger and an audaciously expressive pianist who simultaneously embraces – and explodes – traditional frameworks of music, theater and art. Amanda first came to prominence as one half of the internationally acclaimed punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. In 2008, she released her debut solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer, produced by Ben Folds and accompanied by a fine art photography book featuring text by esteemed author Neil Gaiman (who Palmer has since married). After parting ways with her record label in 2010, she self-released two EPs: Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukelele and Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, along with a musical theater-esque Evelyn Evelyn album and tour with Jason Webley.

I've always been a fan of The Dresden Dolls as well as her solo material. She's a genius artist and I am so happy that I got the chance to see her. Seeing her perform songs on piano and ukulele is something I will never forget. Having her talk to the audience is something I will also never forget. We also got the pleasure of witnessing a couple get engaged right there. It was truly a magnificent night. Getting to meet her afterward was just the icing on the cake. I got to give her a drawing and tell her that I love her. I got her autograph and my night was made. The only thing that would've been better would have been if I would have been able to get a picture with her.

Amanda Palmer was fantastic as always. I love how she connects with her audience, taking time to speak and converse between songs rather than plow through a set like she can't wait for it to be over (I found it particularly fascinating that she never once left to pee despite the fact that she's pregnant). A stripped down show with no band in sight, there was nothing but Amanda herself, a piano, and her beloved ukulele. Amanda unplugged! A very personable experience, there were times when, due to spending the last year working on her recently published book, The Art of Asking, or, How to Stop Worrying and Let People Help, she forgot the lyrics to her own songs. Not to worry, she had no problem allowing fans to climb on stage and sing along with her, helping her remember the words. At one point, she sang and played the Happy Birthday song because there were so many people at the show celebrating theirs that night, my sister included, so that was a rather sweet touch. After the show was over, fans could wait in line for a hug, a chat, and to get things signed, or give gifts. I love how Amanda always makes herself available to hang out one-on-one with her people. Amanda is amazing and the show was incredible. But I would expect nothing less of her.

If you haven't seen AFP (Amanda F*cking Palmer as she calls herself), you are truly missing out. Such an amazing performer and what a performance this was. In addition to her body of work, she played Billie Jean to pay homage to MJ (which she just learned that day mind you) as this show was on the day that he was found dead. She closed out the show with a very heart-felt rendition of Hallelujah as she felt it was appropriate for the day's events (again, just learned the song that day). Just an awesome all around performance.

Amanda always puts on a great show and does not disappoint. She plays with such passion and force, it's so beautiful to watch. Her fans are amazing too and you are guaranteed to have a lot of fun, regardless if you weren't a fan in the first place. Amanda also did a tribute to MJ with "Billie Jean" (youtube it somewhere) as well as fun covers with Jenny Owen Youngs.

If you're a fan of Amanda Palmer or the Dresden Dolls, know that she does NOT disappoint live. If you've never heard either and are just looking for something new - give it a go, you're guaranteed to see something you've never seen before. A true entertainer, her shows are full of energy and humor as well as some pretty amazing music (she has such strength in her voice). I've seen her a few times, no two shows have been alike, she's always creating a new experience for the audience which she clearly appreciates, what's not to love?

From the opening acts (including an appearance by Meow Meow!) to Amanda Palmer herself alongside her Grand Theft Orchestra, it was an incredible night. The music was amazing, you were dancing, jumping, singing, shouting, crying, crancing, any and all of the above. Each performer engaged with and made the audience feel a part of the night. I cannot wait to see her again.

The last time I was able to see Amanda Palmer my friends and I had to drive all the way to Georgia so I was ecstatic to see that she was going to perform an hour away from where I live! I have to say, everyone performed amazingly and it seemed like both the audience and everyone on stage was having fun! The string quartet was wonderful, and Jherek Bischoff did a wonderful performance. Unfortunately, they was two hours late to start, and we had to leave early as a result. It was a shame that we couldn't stay until the end, but go and see Amanda Palmer when you get a chance.

The Bearsville Theatre is a great venue when you want to have an intimate evening with you favorite rock star and her Fine friends! First up, Lady Moon & the Eclipse. Soulful Fun! Check them out on YouTube, local from Hudson,by Amanda tossing flowers out into the crowd (& a Carrot!) Next, PWR BTTM, How 2 guys make that much music is a Wonder. Fine musicians both and I learned more about Glory Holes then I needed to. Amanda was great, playing a mix of her standards and talking to the crowd. Very Pregnant! Her last song was, I think reflective of her life I happened to meet her husband, Author Neil Gaiman then and wished them well. It was dead to see how devoted he was! If you want to know what I'm talking about, just search YouTube for videos of All of them. Amanda, if you actually read this: Good Luck and I look forward to hearing what your doing on Patronium

I've seen hundreds of shows, if not thousands over the years. Everything from local bands to national acts and from traditional country to punk rock. This is easily one of the most intimate and best shows I've ever attended. If this show comes within 200 miles of you, I highly recommend that you attend. Wish I had a recording of this amazing performance.

Oh, my god. It was perfect. Amanda talked a lot and played a lot and asked questions about why everything was closed on Easter Saturday and took questions from the audience. She had a local singer play while she took a break, which sounded very nice. And I could see everything perfectly from my box seat (even though people were content to sit on the floor in front of the first row because Amanda said it was okay). Highly recommend for people who like piano and ukulele.

This has been, without a doubt, the most fantastic concert I have ever been to. I have gone to 20+ shows, so I do not give that compliment out lightly. Since this event was part of a book tour and not a full-fledged concert, it was difficult to know what to expect. But those in attendance got to witness an intimate evening hosted by Amanda Palmer, who invited numerous guests to share the stage with her and help promote her debut book "The Art of Asking." Musician Jason Webley, social psychologist Amy Cuddy, and even Palmer's own husband Neil Gaiman all shared stories, songs, and jokes from the stage. But the highlight was definitely Anthony Martignetti, who, though battling cancer and the effects of chemo therapy, made a defiant appearance to read his short story "Swamp." There were tears. There were laughs. And for those who walked away with signed copies of Palmer's new book, there will be treasure to cherish for years to come.

Spending my New Year's Eve with Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra was hands down the best life decision I've ever made. The band on its own would have been enough, but there was belly dancing, Ronald Reagan (Boston's premier 80's pop saxophone duo), Neil Gaiman singing a theme song from a science fiction puppet show, Purple Rain (each band member took a turn at dressing up and performing as Prince), John Cameron Mitchell (AHHHHHHHH!), and so much confetti and love. I left feeling sexy, affirmed in my weirdness, and more than satisfied. Thank you to everyone who made the night possible!

This was the greatest concert I've been to. It started promptly at 9 with her band leader, Jherek, impressing and wowing us with a phenomenal bass guitar song. But then it turned out that each member of the band, Chad and Michael as well, were amazing performers, both on and off their instruments. In addition to Amanda and the band, there were Ronald Reagan, a sax duo from Boston who were fun and funny (and excellent musicians, too). Finally, after all of these musicians as well as a fine string quartet joined Amanda on stage, the group was made even more incredible with the addition of John Cameron Mitchell. The show was wonderful not only because each of the musicians was amazing but because the ensemble rose to even greater heights.

Jherek opened the show with moving bass loops then adding other orchestrations, Including a great female vocalist. Next The Simple Pleasures played an entertaining and energetic set. We imbibed a belly dance by two beautiful women then put down the opening acts for the Grand Theft Orchestra. New songs and old were played and amanda took requests for songs, one of which Ronald Regan took stage to join. I heard the call for intermission and I bought a drink then Ronald Regan came out playing us into the new year. This was a great beautiful show. The Grand Theft orchestra came out again, Neil Gaiman arrived on stage and took out a piece written for the occasion. He then sang masterfully a song from Fireball XL5. The night went on past curfew and i left with a drumstick threw into the crowd by Michael McQuilken.

AFP & TGTO were, as always, amazing. Amanda put it best when she said that her band is made up of front-people. The Special Guests were also beyond brilliant, as was to be expected. Even recovering from bronchitis, Amanda Palmer killed her perfomance, attacking each song with as much emotion, energy and personality as possible. A varying set of new songs, with a few (slightly re-vamped) renditions of some Dresden Dolls made the sound of the show vary from 80's rock, to her "dark cabaret" feel. Without any costume changes or props, aside from the two inflatable flamingos the audience got to bounce around, the concert was every bit as entertaining as some big flashy show, getting to see this music at it's raw form, unable to hide behind a lightshow or what have you was incredible. Every one involved were incredibly talented with a bunch of energy. Bring good shoes to stand in if there are no seats, and get there early for a good spot, but if you like amazing music, GO!

I enjoyed the shows immensely. The work ethic and talent of Amanda Palmer really showed in all three performances. Having seen her shows at various venues, my fear now is that we'll lose a physical closeness to the artist that we had at previous performances, due to the security concerns of managing her safety among so many fans. Before Amanda even began preforming I was having a great time, the opening acts were great and I enjoyed picking up the CDs they had to offer. Everyone on stage was having a great time and it reflected in how they played, the feeling certainly went over into the audience for I don't know of anyone who wasn't having a good time. When Amanda's set finally began the show went from incredible to unfathomable. Everyone did their job fantastically and the show was just.. Wow. I've been fortunate enough to see Amanda in different stages of her artistic career, and her current project with the Grand Theft Orchestra is without a doubt her most passionate work. The opening acts were varied, but perfect to set the atmosphere (though some rowdy audience members didn't seem to have any respect for guitarist/everything else Chad Raine's band Simple Pleasure). There was so much to this show and I don't want to write every detail, but it is not to be missed!

And a kickstarter backer, and I was so disappointed by this show. I was excited to hear her new music and this show was completely self-indulgent. Think all the money has gone to her head, and I miss the poetic Amanda Palmer that I used to love. Will not be seeing her again.

I have been a huge DD and Amanda fan. Needless to say.. her concert disappointed me. Seeing about every LA show she has had since the first DD album.. I am not just some guy talking crap. Jason, who I really wasnt much of a fan, really was awesome. He stole the show. Amanda, when she came out.. seemed hardly rehearsed, played very few of her own songs.. mostly letting jason and others come on stage and jam with her... which would be fine.. if it was a free concert.. or advertised as such.. Through the whole show.. just a handful of amanda solo songs were played.. .. i am all for a relaxed concert and 'jam session' but deliver to those there that payed to see a freaking amanda concert.. not amanda and friends drinking and hanging out playing.. btw.. the encore was the same lame drinking song her and jason did at evelyn and evelyn.. at least this venue had alcohol

Transcendent. That is all I can say. 4(!) hours of transcendent entertainment with two remarkable creators who give their all, and then some.

Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer. Two very different artists who, on the road together, happily married, and HILARIOUS, bring on the laughs! Neil, a renowned fantasy and fiction author read some of his stories and, funny enough, was mock forced to sing with Amanda. While on the other hand, we have the unbearably cute, talented, and fun-loving Amanda Palmer of the band The Dresden Dolls. She plays her ukelele, dazzles on the piano, and sings like a heaven-sent pixie. Bringing the two together, complementary and delightful, I have never laughed so hard, smiled so much, and felt as moved by artists' performances. Also, Amanda Palmer covering Velvet Underground and Lou Reed nearly brought me to tears. And a surprise appearance by Actor/Director/Creator John Cameron Mitchell to sing Hedwig and The Angry Inch songs made the evening that much more special and unique. The venue was agreeably small, personable, and private...which I enjoyed immensely. Wonderful show and both lovely people! I was glad the two of them shared an intimate and fun evening with me and a hundred others. The opening act of The Jane Austen Argument also thrilled me. Also, the fact that they played for FOUR hours (nearly getting humorously booted out of the Aladdin Theatre at midnight) but still managed to do a speedy meet and greet shows their character and appreciation for their fans...I felt like their acquaintance. LOVED IT!

It was teriffic to see these two so candid! I loved that there was no script and no expectations. I did not enoy the whole "general seating" deal...at all. We did find (really crappy) seats eventually, though. After the threat of having to stand in the doorway passed (true story), we were able to relax and really enjoy this variety show. I was there for Neil Gaiman, who read and read and read and who could have read more because I really love his voice and getting to hear him tell it was incredible. It reminded me of how much I love being read to. Amanda was great too, a story teller in her own way. They went extra long, but it was a Tuesday night and we had to relieve the babysitter :(

My wife and I went to the show with the intent of mainly wanting to see Neil Gaiman, because I am a fan of his, and because we hadn't ever listened to Amanda Palmer's music. After a amazing 4hr. show, we can now say we are huge Amanda Palmer fans/supporters, and Neil Gaiman was everything we could of hoped we would see. We have been to many concerts/shows/events over the years, and this was hands down our favorite we have ever been to. Thank you so much Amanda and Neil for the amazing experience

Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman are both so vivid and creative and entertaining. It was easily the best show I've ever seen - and their creativity is completely inspiring.

Went with no expectations, but left surprised and disaponted at the same time. Surprised on the heavines of the topics of what was read and sang but disaponted that it was poorly organized taking away from giving more to de devoted fans.

Spectacular. Raucous. Moving. Hilarious. Unforgettable. I've loved Mr. Gaiman's work for, gosh, is it two decades now? And over the last year I was very happily introduced to the work of the gorgeous Ms. Palmer. All my expectations were surpassed. Those people are a powerhouse. The magnificent duo first arrived upon the intimate little Aladdin stage shortly after 8pm. They did not stop until after midnight. 4 hours, no intermission (no one minded!) and special guest John Cameron Mitchell. Oh, and then they graciously met with people and signed various bits and bobs. The Jane Austin Argument did not disappoint despite one member being detained in Vancouver BC. Adorable Jen carried on while Tom made occasional and amusing appearances via Skype and a laptop. The crowd was a wonderful blend. Thanks to everyone who liked my TARDIS outfit. You were wonderfully sweet. Again - a bloody amazing evening...with Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman. Squee!

Wow. Just wow. This may well have been the finest show I have ever have the privilege to attend. Neil read what has become my favorite of his stories, one he wrote as a birthday present for Ray Bradbury. Amanda encouraged me further to buy a Ukulele. The special guest turned out to be John Cameron Mitchell and he managed to replace my association with Hedwig and the Angry Inch from bad to good. All in all it's going to be a tough night to beat.

this was seriously the best concert i have EVER been to! Jason had an incredible stage presence that was perfectly complimented by Amanda's wit and beauty! the crowd interaction was outstanding! everyone was so nice and fun! big outfits and costumes, it was like a celebration of life and music rather than a concert!

But, Chris Webley took over the time and went overboard.. I mean; seriously within all can do respect, you don't do that to main headliners such as Amanda Palmer. Also, not one song w/Chris when Amanda done a callib before with her? Amanda's energy seemed slightly lacking in some sense, but the same time she did prevailed with some good classics. I just wish it was more than that :)

We drove 12 hours and paid over $300 on tickets and gas to make it to this show. I could have left after the first set and been satisfied. Each set was incredible. Jason Webley's incorporated audience participation, which I think will prove to revolutionize the way we consume.

Inspiring and mind blowing. If ever any of these performers are on a bill, you better be there: The Jane Austen Argument, The Petrojvic Blasting Co., Jason Webley, or Amanda Palmer. Go.

Four bands took the stage at varous times. The Petrojvic Blasting Company, Jason Webley, The Jane Austen Argument, and, of course, Amanda Palmer. All were completely unique and completely amazing.

I came because my girlfriend loves amanda palmer. and I liked 1 or 2 of her songs. but now after seeing her live i know i will listen to a lot more. she is such an incredible performer. it is so exciting to watch her. and to listen to her live! live is better than her recordings. my girlfriend says it's because some of the artists she works with don't produce her songs very well . I want to go to another one of her concerts! jason webley was great too. Very fun concert. only ONE bad things. TOO LOUD. it hurt my ears. and the theater security kept shining lights in our eyes when people around us were just outside of the line on the floor, or standing on chairs. the stage lighting would also frequently shine in our eyes towards the end of the show, which made it hard to watch amanda.

Amanda Palmer put on an amazing, engaging show. From beginning to end, this was a show focused on the audience and our enjoyment. From introducing the opening acts herself, to soliciting suggestions, to involving us in the songs, it was a great experience on all fronts. Highly recommend it.

While I like AFP's latest "Theatre Is Evil" this is music that is by far best when experienced live. Her backup band, "The Grand Theft Orchestra" is funny, tight, and brilliant, and a kick ass compliment to Palmer's considerable talents. There were also a number of theatrical flourishes in the concert that made it especially memorable. Amanda surfing the crowd with a parachute dress during "Bottomfeeder" and she selected a group from the audience who had brought body paint to do a birthday strip for Neil, which was both hot and fabulous. The Phoenix is an intimate venue; I'd go there again in a heartbeat. The Toronto crowd was enthusiastic but a bit wooden; I danced and sang my ass off like the crazy American that I am, and yesterday I was voiceless and sore all over. One of the best live performances I've ever seen, ever.
