Slap stick comedy at it's worst. It was not funny and for a play that was to be based on Hitchcock there was definitely no intrigue or plot. Do not spend your money on this one.

the staging almost upstaged the dialogue - an entertaining spoof that was shades of the old Gaslight Theatre productions

39 Steps was a well acted and clever production. It helped to have seen the movie just prior to seeing the play to better appreciate the spoofs. I recommend it.

Very interesting and creative use of props. High-energy performance. Easy to follow and as true to Hitchcock's movie as a play could get. Loved the montage about "The Birds" and "North by Northwest" and the Hitchcock profile. AWESOME! BTW--also glad that Ticketmaster now allowed us to select our seats from seats available. Front row balcony at the Temple of Music and Art was a GREAT place to sit! It was a bit tight on leg room, but the view was excellent.

It's not like your traditional Alfred Hitchcock show, this one does have a little comedy and the actors did a great job of improv. Not until the end did I realize it was only a troop of 4 performing all characters. Gotta love the Prop usage and thinking out of the box.

Wonderful, fun play with superb acting that matches anything on Boardway that we have seen. Many additions to scenes (from Broadway) that added such delight to the entire production! Once again, AZ Theater Company nailed it!

Four actors playing over 100 roles - we weren't sure what to expect, but they did a phenomenal job. What a talented cast - both on stage and behind the scenes. My husband and I really enjoyed the performance and would definitely recommend it to anyone (all-ages appropriate).

Hysterical, very well acted, timing and humor were perfect. Amazing that 4 actors can play all these different parts with such ease in transition. I couldn't have imagined how they would pull this off. You don't have to be familiar with Alfred Hitchcock to enjoy this production but the clever references to some of his movies was very well done.

The actors were great. They had so many costume changes and character changes that it was very interesting to see how they accomplished that. The effects that they portrayed when riding in a car, train, or being blown by a breeze was fantastic. They did a magnificant job.

This was a really fun and clever show with lots of action and laughs. The four actors were amazing in their character changes and they were great at incorporating the scene changes into the whole scheme of the play. The set is minimal which actually adds to the fun because the cast has to mimic the necessary effects.

Loved it,lovedit, loved it! It was part mystery, part musical, part vaudville and because of the numerous quick changes and antics/acrobatics of the actors part Cirque de Sole!! The most fun I've had in live theatre for a long time. The cast was so talented, professional and funny! Would see it again if it weren't completeing its run. But find out were it goes next and GO THERE!

Just saw 39 steps at the Herberger Theater Center courtesy of Arizona Theater Company AND the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis (main cast members)...Amazing, creative, inventive, everything theater is about and movies are not! See Warhorse in the live theater and then the movies (39 steps or Warhorse) and you can understand that in these cases the films are weak sisters to the plays performed in the theater...Watching the intricate "handcuff" in 39 steps the play, I am reminded of Chaplin and the his revolving door (the Drunkard?) scene and the boxing bit in another short...the 130 roles done by two actors was a GREAT PLEASURE, as were the leads! Bravo for comedy!

I had high hopes for 39 Steps but it turned out to be nothing but two hours of Abbot and Costello slapstick humor. Not our style.

Acting was very good. The pace of the play slowed down in the second half and it lost its energy. Had trouble hearing. I think for a play like 39 Steps, the actors should be miked. The voices themselves carried, but it was hard to understand what they were saying during parts of the play.

Excellent. An excellent way to have an evening of laughter. Many scenes were from Hitchcock films. The play was filled with fast costume changes, sight gags, references to other films, and creative sets. The actors were amazing and you could see they were having a lot of fun playing their various characters. That is important; you need to be having a good time yourself in order to infect the audience with real laughter. Bravo.

The character changes were even more of a wow than the costume changes. How a simple hat transformed the character, or the flap of a cape. Flawless timing over and over again.

When a friend said we had to see this, we thougt well, OK, we'll give it a try. We were blown away. It is almost indescribable...a combination of an acting tour de force, clever sight gags and staging, and intricately coordinated physical comedy. There are so many subtle little nuances you have to be alert every second, which is not hard to do when you're being so highly entertained.

Devoid of quite the serious and somber atmosphere of a traditional Alfred Hitchcock production, this play definitely is a unique performance. The actors, although only four of them, are very talented and are relatable to the audience. In a way, it's a play-within-a-play, because the fourth wall is constantly being broken. One must use their imagination to understand everything going on on stage, but it adds a bit of magic to the whole production. I would definitely recommend for those who enjoy comedy and a bit of "naughty" humor; there is nothing tasteless in anyway, but a bit of harmless fun. Would definitely recommend!

Combine Hitchcock suspense, Marx Brothers slapstick, pre-war Espionage, and four actors changing roles and costumes at a breakneck pace, and Bob's your uncle - you've got 39 Steps! From the early 'streetlamp' scene, you know these guys are here for your enjoyment. Even the unseen stage hands seem get in on the fun throwing props around. You'll have a great time for sure!

The 4 actors playing 150 roles in this hilarious and delightful undertaking of a very old Hitchcock thriller was just plain fun! The actors, crew and audience had a fun time. It made it more enjoyable for us that we rented the original prior to the event. That allowed us to catch all of lines and nuances of the show. Apparently, The 39 Steps movie, done in the 1930's while Hitch was still in England, was redone by Hitch and Americanized later in North by Northwest in Hollywood. This slapsticky handling is so much fun and gives you a great laugh!

This show was hilarious. There was never a dull moment what with four actors playing over a hundred parts. The actors were all strong and pulled this off without a hitch. The staging was ingenious using a ornate backdrop with simple props. I think Hitchcock would approve!

My sides are still hurting from laughing at the Arizona Theater Comany's deliver of The 39 Steps. The characterizations were fabulous and the parody effects very clever. There was very effective use of cut-outs and lighting for the chase parts. The complete changes of character with split-second timing was amazing.

Very entertaining production with a first-rate cast and clever staging. As Hitchcock fans we appreciated the witty references to his greatest films (and the Bernard Hermann music). Don't miss this production. The four actors playing the multiple roles in this comedic version of Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps are truly gifted. I have never laughed so much during a theatrical production. The British accents, timing, delivery, and sets were impeccable. Watched the original 1935 version and this production was right on. Thank you Arizona Theatre Company.

We had a very enjoyable evening having expected the suspense but not the uproarious comedy. We came to the show on recommendation of our daughter who was familiar with several actors and production crew from Minneapolis. They exceeded our high expectations.
