Such a great concert, Vic sounded incredible! At the end of the concert he came out and we had the opportunity to meet him, take pictures and ask questions!
At first, I thought it was going to be a pretty mellow show - you know how Vic is sometimes... But the combination of long-time groovemaster JD Blair, plus Victor Wooten and his amazing gifts, and THEN his offspring rocking the Culture Club - proved to be worth every penny. The bartender by the outdoor bar was really funny, too.
Originally I thought it was going to be Victor's full band with his brothers and guests filling in, but it was just Victor Wooten and J.D. Blair. And it was amazing! I had just recently gotten out of the hospital for a serious condition and dragged myself to see these guys and I am glad I did. Victor is always the consummate musician. Just watching him grooving and talking and singing at the same time just blows me away. It was really touching (and impressive!) when Victor brought out his kids to play and sing with him. We are all going to be hearing much much more about Victor's son Adam, he is an amazing drummer for such a tender young age. Lastly, Julius Pastorius (son of late great Jaco Pastorius) came out and played drums for the finale. Great show!
Went to Victor Wooten and JD Blair and it was an amazing show. The room was packed and people were really into it. Some of the highlights were when he had his son Adam playing drums and his two daughters singing. That was really awesome and emotional. He proved he really is one of the best bass players ever.
The concert was wonderful, he played a lot of music and his bass guitar was played as only Victor Wooten can play, He played enough time to be pleasant. I will go if he comes to town again.
My wife and myself just saw 2M&1G last night and the performance was amazing or incredible or spiritual (pick an adjective). First the sound was excellent not to much volume and crisp and clear. The only time that it could have been better was when he brought 3 of his children to perform ( yes 3 of his children) and they were GREAT their ages are 6,8 and 11. A little more volume on his daughters voices. I think they got the loudest applause of the evening. Victor and JD go from easy jazz to his double thumbing to a metal type groove all in one night. Amazing!!! We will see Victor every time he comes to town.

Victor Wooten is clearly the most innovative bass player of our time. He brought elements of funk, jazz, groove and classical music to the stage. As always, he demonstrated the versatility of the bass, hitting pretty much every note in every possible way he could, getting the bass to make every possible sound a bass could make. The first portion of the show was just Victor and the incredible JD Blair on the drums. Victor has said before that he views making music with people just like he does communication with people. That is exactly what he and JD had up on stage, a conversation. Wooten also did something I've never seen before. He brought his children out on stage and let them show off their musical talents. With two daughters who sing (the eldest of which is 11) and his son who is a stellar drummer, it was not only amazing to see a whole family share in the joy of making music but it was also a real trip to see how proud Victor was of his family as they were doing it. To end the show they brought the Lee boys back out and just lit the stage on fire. And Victor wrapped it up with "what did he say" as an encore with his son and JD Blair backing him up on the drums. It was an unforgettable show for anyone who was lucky enough to be there.

I am not a big music buff in the degree that I don't really get it if something was done in a cool way. I usually just like to listen. Well, with Victor Wooten it was hard not to notice. The man is a genius at the bass. Together with his drummer they put on a very impressive, entertaining and enjoyable show.

Victor Wooten put on an amazing show, as usual. His virtuosity on the bass is insane. He played for 2 1/2 hours straight with incredible energy. He brought on local talent, as well as his incredibly talented children. His young son (8 years old?) was a monster on the drums, and his daughters sang beautifully. He had a bass unlike anything we've ever seen before, a six-string with extra frets. The sounds he coaxed out of the 3 basses he played were unbelievable; some pieces sounded like they were being played on a classical nylon string guitar. He and J.D., his drummer and fellow singer, were an inseparable unit. They built amazing songs by layering loops of bass, drums, and sound effects into multilayered masterpieces. J.D. also provided incredible energy and comic relief. Overall, the show was amazing; I would eagerly see him again.

Excellent performance. My first rock concert in 35 Years. My 13 yr. old son and I went together and we both were blown away by the variety, warmth and passion of the performers. Four bassists - from cello, to upright, 4 & 5 string fretted, a 6 or 7-string fretless, even a baritone horn! 2 drummers and an aweome female vocalist. Everybody doubled on something, be it a trumpet, guitar, keyboards, flute or percussion and it was an evening to remember.

Went there to see Wooten but was blown away by Jimmy Herring Band. His performance was so extraordinary, and so enlightening that I was just spent afterwards. When Victor Wooten took the stage (my reason for buying the ticket mind you) his act was somewhat stilted and gimmicky by comparison. I love his music and spirit, but I couldn't abide 4 bass players sharing the stage. I left the show after Wootens third song. Simply put, Herring upstaged Wooten. I feel sorry for any act that has to follow him. Jimmy Herring 5 stars!

What a treat to see these guys in such an intimate venue! Victor Wooten, his two broothers and the band opened the show. Their family talent was outstanding! Then Stanley Clarke performed and showed what the master could do! Still pounding the bass at 60 years old! He brought up Lenny White, to play A Song for John with him, which was a great surprise.

Having been bored to exhaustion by Club d'Elf's continuous hour of pointless, soporific wanderings, the venerable Paradise Club was begining to feel more like purgatory, if not Hades itself. Then, like a thunderclap from Heaven, Victor Wooten descended upon the stage and instantly resurrected a musical Eden. Wooten draws a cult-like following who revere every thump from his array of Fodera Monarchs, and with good reason. He is extaordinarily talented, certainly the greatest bass player of his generation. He has all the fluid two-handed hammer-on technique of Stanley Clarke, all the slap prowess of Marcus Miller, all the finger-flying pyrotechnics of Billy Sheehan, and all the experimental groove of Jaco Pastorius. Then he adds his own unique phrasing, staccato articulation and mind-altering chops on top of it. The instrumental virtuosity, a warm, engaging stage presence and ebullient showmanship mix to create an experience that astounds, confounds, and ultimately exhilarates the soul. With his older brother Regi Wooten on guitar, drummer Derico Watson, and keyboardist Steve Weingart, they produced an ensemble sound that was intricate, funky, and syncopated yet seamless. Regi, especially, was a revelation. Victor credits him with being his music teacher, and the elder Wooten's style on guitar is equally innovative, idiosyncratic and masterful. Primarily an instrumental set, Victor took lead vocals for a few numbers, notably on a gentle exploration of humanity and divinity set to a South-African rhythm, titled "I Saw God". Those who witnessed this towering musical prodigy deliver an uplifting, spiritual event last night in Paradise are likely to feel the same way.

If you know anything about Wooten or Chambers, you know that you're going to witness some of the world's greatest musical talent. Sure enough, they delivered (Bob on sax was phenomenal, too. He did things with looping his playing that I've never heard before. I just don't know him and Iv'e been listening to Victor and Dennis for over 12 years.). I can tell that Chambers is probably reaching the back 9 of his drumming career (Solos a little less intense, a little less "center stage"), but he still delivered a masterclass on stage. Victor, obviously, was the star of the show and he impressed. Insane solos, beautiful weaving of melodies, harmonies, and chords through Bob's sax playing, and exciting looping as well. Simply a once in a life time experience from start to finish, it's I drove 6 hours from Knoxville TN to see them. A must see!

In the small, intimate theater The Victor Wooten Trio made the entire audience feel like family and showed us their crazy talents. In most concerts that I have attended there is some point at which the band members will step up to show you their talents, and there is that 3-8 minute period where you are amazed and have to say, "Damn!" Well, with the Victor Wooten Trio, that was the entire show. Victor Wooten, Dennis Chambers and Bob Franceschini were absolutely killed it the entire time. I can't wait to see them again.

The opening act was pretty bad but not as bad as the opening act for Robin Trower. I don't understand why you have seats on the floor level when you let people stand up in front of the stage. Very annoying. Victor Wooten and all of the players with him were top notch and amazing. This is my fourth time seeing Victor and he only gets better. I would recommend Victor Wooten to any one who really appreciates music but not at the Variety Playhouse. The act is going to have to be the most special of acts for me to ever go there again.

I had never heard of Victor Wooten, but my son has since he plays bass. While visiting DC, I noticed Victor was playing ini nearby Alexandria, VA, and decided to surprise my son. To be honest, I was the one who was surprised. Victor is incredible. He does things with a bass that I didn't realize were possible. The band was great, the event family friendly. His family was in attendance, as was James Brown's former drummer, and they all made appearances during the performance. There were also some kids in the audience that had attended a recent music camp that Victor took part in, and they played with the band for a few minutes. Victor's bassist was a local, so he was in the spotlight for a few minutes. All of these special moments were great, but it would have been just as special without any of that. The band was wonderful, and Victor was the star. All in all an amazing night. Also, they serve food.

Victor Wooten is a magician, a virtuoso, who nonetheless makes his music incredibly accessible. His brother is awesome, and together they are terrifically entertaining! The band is incredibly tight. Add a fabulous drummer, killer keys, and Anthony on bass behind Victor, and the "joint was really jumpin'"!!! Add to the show his generous willingness to have young virtuosos from his music camp come up on stage and play was absolutely a thrill. And then there were those points in the show when he had his daugheters join him on stage. What beautiful children...and their voices - angelic! I also had the distinct pleasure of spending the afternoon with Victor and Anthony at Victor's workshop at Island Music. Victor invites you into music, rather than erecting walls to keep you out. His generous spirit fills his music and any room in which he appears. And you feel you should call him Mr. Wooten, but his soul says "Just call me Victa." To fill an audience with wonder is the rarest form of artistry, and Victor does it with grace.

There are three things everyone should see before they die - The Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, and a Victor Wooten concert. He is amazing. Just telling someone about the most amazing moments in the show would take almost as long as the show itself - every moment is incredible. Take Joe Satriani, give him a sense of humor, a positive, family- and friend-based attitutde, and have him simultaneously play his own bassline and guitar licks, and you begin to get near what Victor does.

The musicianship that was on that stage was and is unbelievable. Starting with Regi and going right down the line. The grooves, the soul, the melody. They are such nice, down to earth guys as well. Mind boggling. Their shows are made up of all different kinds of people: Female, male, tall, short, large, small, black, white, Asian, young, old, middle of the road, musicians and non-musicians alike. A beautiful night.....

I saw the famous bass player Victor Wooten playing with his 3 brothers at Birchmere last night. His brother Roy (Futureman) on drums was incredible his base was set horizontally and he could use it as a Tomtom as well as with the pedal from underneath the Highhat Cymbal central with a ride and two crash and on one side and two or three small cymbals and wood block and metal pot on the other with all the other drums at the same level it seemed like a very smart and comfortable setup. The guitar Player is the oldest brother who introduced and taught the others music his leads were like Jeff Beck and his rhythm was like Jazzy cords like Bob Weir does while others solo. The Keyboard player was brother Joe. Joe also sang the most and had composed the most R&B type songs, They were all fantastic players and Joe blew me away tickling the keys and singing lead all night. They played a lot of funk and soul and talked about there musical history. It was a great show and I was happy that my son Daniel and his friend were able to share the experience with me.

What a musician! He's been called the Michael Jordan of bass players and this tagline is well earned. His band was also gifted and most played multiple instruments - true musicians. There were also some wonderful guest appearances, including two of his four children, his older brother Regi and a young blind bass player. The other real musical treat was three other bass players, four with Victor - yes I said four bass players. Steve Bailey, Berklee College of Music Bass Chair was excellent on his 6 string fretless bass (crazy hard to play). The female vocalist was also outstanding along with the two drummers. Victor and his wonderful band played for almost 3 hours and I could have listened for 3 more. l would highly recommend his show if it comes to your city, a must see!

Wooten is one of those rare jazz artists who knows how to entertain. The thinking that goes behind his shows is amazing. He has the best of breed play for him - he had 3 world class bass guitarists play on stage and 2 drummers. He bought his kids out and they ripped it too. Every guy on the stage had to entertain and show their skills. It is worth every single dollar I spent. Even my hispanic friend who grudgingly came along to a non-salsa show ( and was excited by the samba/salsa number the band played) was very impressed with the entertainment level. Victor used several people he had met during his bass clinics. And many of his students inspire truly because they had to overcome huge challenges like being blind for instance. VW is not only a good musician but a deep human being too.

Victor Wooten is a phenomenal musician. 4 Base Guitars, 2 Sets of Drums, and a Lead Singer in this particular Wooten lineup. Each of the band members also played various other instruments throughout the show. And how Wooten can play 2 songs at once, solo, on his base is beyond me. If you've never seen Victor Wooten live, do it. Wow! What a show.

This was the last night of the one year tour. The audience was first treated to an opener with Wooten on the electric cello- YoYo- Yo'Mama! Then watching four- count them- four of the world's best bassists play with two drumsets for the first long piece, featuring Krystal Peterson who has a fantastic set of pipes I knew that we were in for a memorable treat. I am 55, male, and brought several of my 20 something family members and an older sister and note on their facebook and media postings that they all felt this was one of the best concerts they have ever seen. Whenever you have a chance to see Victor Wooten, take it.

This was one of the best concerts I have attended. Four bass players on stage, all serious music school guys, played multiple instruments. Female vocalist, krystal Peterson was incredible. One of the most soulful concerts ever. He is a must see!

I was shocked and utterly disappointed that Victor chose this ensemble/format as his vehicle of expression. However, since he had, they could have at least injected some musicality/taste. It didn't even groove, which I guess was the main point of having 4 bass players and 2 drummers(for goodness sake). The concert was a hot mess starting off with an inordinately long pre-recorded "classical" introduction that could have been composed by a first grader. My wife and I are both trained musicians and the music that was being produced at this concert was obviously not intended for anyone with "ears". Victor demonstrated that although he is an unbelievable technician, he does not merit being mentioned in the same sentence as Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, etc. due to his conceptual immaturity. I had never walked out of a concert until having walked out of this one. BIG THUMBS DOWN!

I'm a bass player from way back and Victor has manage to bring the Bass instrument to the forefront. I had to look close because I was amazed at the sounds he was able to produce from the bass guitar. The Musicians with him were amazing also. So much talent on stage just blew me away! The female vocalist had such a wide range . Having this at the Newport really gave me a personable experience as I was able to be so close. If your in to music or a musician , I would highly recommend this concert. Well worth the price!

Victor Wooten's concert at the Newport 4.24.13 was an outstanding celebration of The Bass. Each musician is multitalented. Their interaction and improvisation was truley an honor to witness. No Egos, just a great group of people doing what they love to do..Victor has surrounded himself with the best in the world for this tour event. It was great to see OSU Prof Wheeler take the stage and jam. The Tone is The Thing!

Victor Wooten is an incredible artist who surrounds himself with incredible artists. This performance was unforgettable. Victor played 3 different electric basses, an upright bass, a cello, and a euphonium (I think). The guest performance by Shawn "Thunder" Wallace, an Ohio State saxophone professor (who is apparently just as adept at playing the flute), was great. The vocals by Krystal Peterson were beautiful. Overall, just an excellent evening.

The band Victor has put together is superb. Accomplished musician, everyone of which took the spotlight at one time or another for a solo. Almost everyone in the band played at least three different instruments during course of the show.

I have ventured my share of concerts and maybe a few other peoples as well so by no means am i easily overwhelmed. first off there is no fluff! There are no openers or space takers. Thus what you get is a full near overdose of the Wooten Experience. you would expect someone with such a following to sit out front and overlook the rest of the band, so not the case. Crystal melts you with her voice from the jump and at some time or another (and not just once like with usual introductions) everyone on stage goes in hard! found out about the concert last minute and dropped everything to be in attendance, you should do the same.
