AFI

Extreme alt-rock outfit AFI, short for A Fire Inside, continue to keep their punk rock spirit alive after more than two decades together. The four-piece California band, impressively composed of the same lineup since 1998, has revitalized hardcore punk ever since their 1991 beginning, though the crew didn’t see mainstream success until their 2003 platinum-selling “Sing the Sorrow.” Since that time, AFI has satiated ticket holders at amped up concerts nationwide, either on their own headlining runs or as part of the Vans Warped Tour on several occasions. After a four-year recording hiatus, AFI unveiled its ninth studio set, “Burials,” in October 2013.

The AFI concert last night was epic, haha it was at the epic venue ironically enough. The Gallows were an amazing opening band, we moshed with the lead singer, we did a fairly big circle pit as well. That was wicked awesome! The lead singer of The Gallows came down on the floor with us and sang as we sang with him. After The Gallows played, it was an excrutiating long time waiting for AFI to get on stage. Myself and everyone around me was pumped for them to come on. People were pushing and shoving trying to get to the front with us, but that wasn't happening. Then all of a sudden, the lights went out and out came none other than AFI. The show blasted off and there was (moshing)-even though it was sucky- and surging galore. Now, for a short 16-year-old girl with the height of 4"11', it was fairly hard for me to stay in the front. I was being squished by stupid tall guys with their boney elbows in my neck, i couldn't hear or see a thing. So then i pushed my way out of the front and went to the side and watched for a little bit. Then after that I went in the pit and enjoyed myself with it. Then I crowd surfed a little bit so I could actually see AFI doing their thing. That was a great view i must admit, being able to actually see their faces. They played 2 encore songs, and then the security guards pushed us outta there. A security guard and a stupid guy almost got in a major fist fight. That was pretty cool. Then after the show we got to talk to Davey and Jade, that made my day. Then everything came spiriling down to an end and we drove home, took a shower and went to bed.

Sold out Chicago show. The boys were incredible as always (my 3rd show this tour) Only BAD part is they never came out after. Some diehard fans waited until 1AM. Smith said he was our "consolation prize". I call him Saint Smith for all he does. Worst part is the lighting. Stage way to dark and smoky and backlit. We want to SEE them playing. I am not a fan of Gallows, but they do put on an interesting and active show. And DF peeps are the nicest. Always. :-)

A.F.I. is great band and you can see top-notch live performance. Great music, beautiful light show. Their sound as many groups of today was little distorted even that the sound wasn't too loud , it was in optimal perfect level.

Packed house with incrediblty energetic exciting bands. Gallows is old school in a young package, and AFI is transcedental but at heart a helluva rock and roll band. Could have played at a much large venue but instead of that option, I would suggest both bands play a weekend together two nights (Friday-Saturday), where AFI could do their greatest hits one night and their new inspirations the next (so much new stuff I'd like to hear). Gallows just needs to be seen to be loved, they are a live rock sensation. Thank you for the great evening! --Kent

The AFI concert in Kansas City, was so worth the 6 hour drive and getting lost and waiting in the line because at the end me and my friend got to the front and got smushed and kicked in the eye but it was all well worth! AFI was amazing!!

The opening act was pretty lousy and wasn't my taste in music choice thought their accents were nice to hear, but they seemed to have made it quite entertaining to watch a rather organized chaos of a large mosh pit. There was a long wait for the boys to get on stage, but it was worth it! I remember being in the sixth row and slowly moving toward Hunter ending with the three song encore in the third to second row. The songs were perfect and they played all my favorites! I was disappointed though that most of the people there didn't know most of their songs, but that just makes the boys hear my voice better. Ya? x3 Also favorite moment: When there were some malfunctions with the instruments and Davey had to sort of become a "high school-er" again as to making people life while Jade tried to get the guitar working.

This show was great. I enjoyed seeing AFI for the second time and being in a small crowd. The only disappointment was that they didn't play any older songs from back in the 90's. The tour manager (Smith Puget, guitarist, Jade's brother) came out in the line with us and recorded the line and snapped a few pictures with fans. It was a nice show overall.

Club Zoo provided a wonderful array of possibilities for AFI's effects. Mix those in with Davey's beautiful voice and a very close, involved crowd...it equals near perfection. I recommend any event at Club Zoo just for the mere atmosphere. Remember to go early, though! That way you can get a better spot in the crowd. Otherwise, you get stuck on the floor in the back where people are constantly pushing up or back.

Really good show! Citizen and Circa Survive we're really good and had great energy. I hadn't listened to them before, but I will have to check their music out now. AFI was awesome and it was nice to see the connection they have with one another while they were trying to decide on which songs they wanted to play next. I've never really seen that kind of "spur of the moment" show where a band doesn't have a set song list, so it made it fun. They played songs from many albums so everyone got a bit of each. It would have liked to hear the"The Leaving Song Part II" and Prelude 12/21, but those are just some of favs, lol. Who knows, they might play those songs at your show! Overall really great show and the angsty teen in me got to hear songs I liked 11+ years ago.

Citizen the opening band was a great act; only to be dulled by obnoxious 30 year olds loudly gabbing, groping, and drinking. I get it, you're still goth and can't move onto modern day music. Most energetic show I've ever been to!!! AFI opened with Torch Song, setting the stage for an absolutely electric set-list. Davey Havoc walks out on stage with his new hair-do, wearing a glittering gold/chrome suit, and immediately owns the stage. I am not a long-time AFI fan. I don't know much before "Sing the Sorrow", and I think the set-list was designed for fans like me. AFI played mainly from "Sing the Sorrow", "Decemberunderground", and "Crash Love". but they did throw in 2 or 3 older tunes for the hardcores. Opening acts The Gallows got the crowd worked up into a foaming frenzy. Very fun and entertaining band. It was my first time @ the Epic, formerly known as the Quest Club, but it was totally awesome! It is small and stylish. Everything was brand new and sleek.

The lights go blue. The crowd screams while Adam, Hunter, and Jade get in place. Jade holds up his guitar and starts playing. Then Davey appears and runs out around the stage like a madman, barely making it in time to the microphone for the first "Oh!:" The crowd sings along to every line of the opening song, Medicate. Saying this concert was phenomenal is an understatement. It's rare to find a band that sounds better live than on CD. Heck, most bands can't even sound as good as the studio versions. I've seen the I Heard A Voice DVD, but thought it only sounded that good because it was a DVD. Little did I know how wrong I was. All of the energy, the great sounding music - they didn't care how small the venue was. They gave it their all.

I saw the band Thursday in Spokane and Friday in Seattle. The shows were awesome, lots of new stuff, lots of Sing the Sorrow, a smidge of Black Sails, no Art of Drowning, one SUPER old one, one B side. I stayed really, really late after the show and got to meet the band. They were really, really nice and gave me hugs because I was freezing. Hunter wanted to leave to go watch the last episode of Conan but promised to come back and talk to everyone who was left, he was true to his word and stayed to meet everyone. They were all very gracious and appreciative.

Missed the first band. The second band wasn't bad, great variaty, however the lyrics were drowned out by the instruments. Red Jump Suite was pretty good also, good variety. You only hear a couple songs on the radio (at least the ones I listen to) so it was nice to hear something different. AFI rocked, great show and the music was great. The one draw back is that you (or at least I) could tell that for the high piched vocals they used technology. Technology doesn't bother me if it is the sound (melody & harmony), but not a big fan of technology to enhance vocal capability. Still the sound and show was great.

The best part of the night is when AFI took the stage. Davey Havok Immedietly had a presence that filled the auditorium, Without one word from the band, The crowd began chanting: Through our bleeding, we are one. Through our bleeding, we are one. With everything set, Davey Havok emerged in a fine shiny suit, making his way across stage like a rock and roll Michael Jackson. Every song that was played was everything I could have wanted. Songs from Sing the Sorrow, to the new hits on Crash Love. And even though his look slightly changed (as it always does) his eyes remained the same, emo to the core. Which I wouldn't have it any other way. Davey Havok and the rest of A Fire Inside are the best band that is still living today, of course in my opinion.

The AFI concert in Chicago was an amazing event. I got there as the opening band was finishing up, and it was difficult to find a good spot to see the stage and not get trampled by people moshing. I finally found my spot and was able to just enjoy the music and excellent stage performance of AFI the remainder of the show. Their high energy performance was maintained throughout. Even when there were a few instances of sound feedback, AFI gave their all and weren't discouraged by minor imperfections to the sound quality. This is, without a doubt, one of the best concerts I've attended.

Although I hate the venue because of how strict they are, AFI was amazing. I didn't know if they'd be as good live as their recorded versions of the song, but they blew me away! The light show was just as fun, and seemed to be perfectly set to the music. I only wish that you could hear and understand what people are saying when you aren't in the mosh pit. All the speakers are turned inward and when you are on the outside edge, you can't hear a word they say when they are just talking

It warmed my heart to see AFI on stage again. This was probably the best venue that I have seen them at, the Fox is both comfortable and provides great acoustics. AFI continues to sound amazing while providing a very energetic stage presence. They played a good range of songs but nearly nothing from their first four albums, especially the first two which are my personal favorites. Once a punk, always a punk. There were a lot of hardcore fans there, which was cool. But there was some inconsideration for other's well being in the lowest floor area. I am a mosher and don't mind physical contact but some guy from one level up jumped off the railing with no warning and landed on the back of a few people next to me, knocking a few to the floor. Just a warning.

Let me start this review by saying that I am in no way a professional artist. I am just a working stiff that attends 20-30 different shows each year. AFI needs to invest in back up singers to support Davey or maybe even a cool local choir for a few songs. Davey has carried this band on his back for the past 10 years with his voice and unfortunately that has taken it's toll. The music itself was decent however, very easy to get caught up in all of the memories each vintage song brings. A few tweaks and this could have been one amazing show.

You would think that, returning to one of their so-called "home towns," AFI would really spit out some righteous, original punk wonderment.... but no. It was all the current, poppy-funk schtuff, and NOTHING for us original AFI'ers! Not ONE song from even Black Sails... no God Called in Sick... no Prayer Position.. no At a Glance... nothing from Very Proud of Ya... I mean, it was just a joke. A push pit in the middle, these funkers didn't even know how to collaborate with folks for a real pit. It was pathetic. My husband said he will never see another AFI show in his life - and he's been to at least 10 over the years. Thanks for nothing, guys.

Such a great show! I felt like I was 16 again, they sounded just as good than, as they did tonight!! Really a great performance, the venue was great too, small (not a bad seat in the theatre) great acoustics and lights! Over all I'd love to see AFI again, and I'd love to go to the fox theatre in Oakland for another show.

Great show, it was exactly what I expected. They played the classic. I wish it was a longer set, they only played for an hour and ten minutes. Regardless, great show and had a lot of fun.

Since I'm 5'4 I would've had to be all the way up front in order to see anything, but besides that it was a fantastic show overall.

I have seen a lot of concerts and this is my favorite one I have ever been to. The stage presence was absolutely amazing, the reaction with the crowd was great and they sounded just like they do on albums without the nonsense of lip syncing. Davey's crowd walking was so cool. I could not have asked for more out of a concert.

First off, just wanted to say the venue was amazing. Second, the bands were fantastic. I'm just thrilled AFI came to Kentucky. The show was fantastic, and I would highly recommend checking out shows at the Mercury Ballroom , and seeing AFI. The guys sounded great, as always. And Nostalghia was seriously kick ass. The lead singing has a very unique voice, and she puts on a good performance. Also props to AFI coming out saying hi to their fans. And as always a thank you to both bands for their amazing performances.

The Ritz was a great place to see a show! The opening acts seemed like they took forever. Wasn't impressed with either of them. But, AFI was fabulous!!! Played old school songs and new. Havok sounded amazing!!

I had reservations about going alone to a concert, I'd done it before, and had a decent experience. But I could not pass up the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands at an affordable price. If you've never been to a concert at Center Stage before, it's hands down one of the best music venues in Atlanta. I've seen shows at Phillips Arena, The Tabernacle, and The Masquerade. The Masquerade is easily one of the worst venues but caters to a ton of my favorite metal and hard rock bands. But Center Stage is fantastic -- compared to hole-in-the walls like the Masquerade. The stage area allows the artist to connect with fans and choose how intimate they want to be with the audience. With the option of seating and floor at the same price, it's really a win-win. Now, as for AFI, they really took the stage by storm, and Davey gave 100%+ during his performance. His energy never dissipated and the expressions and emotions he displayed were incredibly powerful. While his voice may not be 100% as clean as it use to be, he has in no way lost his touch. A true front man. The set was crazy intense, with a good bit of old, new, and really old stuff from their roots. The rest of the guys, Hunter, Jade, and Adam were awesome as well. Never letting up and always keeping energetic pace with Davey. This band really moves as a body of art. Nothing that you would see in much of mainstream musicians. The hardest part of the night was when it all ended, while they played the encore. I don't think they could ever play long enough to satisfy my craving for this band. All in all, AFI is one of the single most dedicated bands left in their genre, do everything you can to see them live before it's too late. They are worth every penny, and worth the wait.

Konig was a horriblely lack luster band and Youth Code had promise. Youth Code had a great beat but due to sound issues their words were muffled and incomprehensible. AFI, on the other hand, sounded amazing the entire time. The lead singer did a standing crowd surf that was out of this world. The concert went much better than expected other than having to deal with a bathroom attendant. Seriously, did I really need someone to pump soap into my hand and give me a wash cloth?

pretty lame. sorry AFI. The singer was jumping all over the place and pointing to the sky like he was trying to work an arena - good show of enthusiasm, but just not relavant. They band had zero cross-chatter or talking to the crowd, very boring performance. Musically, they played their songs well. I guess I am not just into the band or the venue or just wasn't drunk enough... if you like a lot and have the money to blow and its easy to get to and from the venue then go for it, otherwise dont go out of your way...

I have waited for 10+ years to finally see AFI Live. For every show I have missed, this one makes up for it tenfold. It was absolutely amazing. AFI is intense - as is the crowd. If anyone is ever perched on the fence about whether to go - do it. go. spend the money and the time. all of it. Just go.

We have been waiting for AFI to play in our area for a couple of years,so we were really excited to get to see them in a smaller venue. If you go to this venue, you have an assigned seat, but people just sit everywhere and we wound up in someone else's seat, which was kinda confusing. There is also a pit area I. Front of the stage if you're into that kind of thing.
