Beautiful: the Carole King Musical (Touring)

Beautiful: the Carole King Musical (Touring)

BEAUTIFUL tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than BEAUTIFUL music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

This was a great show with fabulous performers. I didn't know Carole and her husband wrote so many songs for other well-known performers. My only critique was that the orchestra was a little too loud for the singers. I was in the balcony so many it was the acoustics of the venue. The actress who played Carole was perfect with an amazing voice.

what a great show we could attend close to home and not have to survive new York traffic. The characters were believable. My wife and I were so upset with Carole's husband we wanted to boo him when they took their curtain calls. Their was enough humor to overcome the heartaches that occurred. Two thumbs up

Carole King is a talented and inspirational musician, who has shared her own passage in an authentic and meaningful manner. She was able to discover and appreciate her talents and the many decisions that she held dear in her life. From the lyrics to her melodies, we are forever marked with the life lessons that the play, Beautiful, holds for each of us!

My grand daughter wanted to see this play for her 18th birthday. It was entertaining from the first scene to the end. Sprinkled with comedy, dancing, and fantastic musical voices. People were dancing in their seats! To be honest I'm not a regular theatre patron, this musical and the performers on stage did a fantastic job !

Beautiful was familiar, as it was a rendition of Carole King's work, and tugged sweetly at my heart. The play and song choice moved deftly between funny and sad, upbeat and tenderly emotional. The set was gorgeous, bright, inviting and set changes were magical. Actors seem to really BE their characters. Enthralling the entire time! A must see!

Had no idea what to expect & loved everyone minute of it...Didn't realize the songs she & her husband wrote for other groups.. Would love to have her sing, "I feel the earth..." in its entirety at the end when the audience stood up & started getting into the music...Ended too soon. Loved Mama Mia when everyone was dancing in the aisle at the end! The only distractions was the wireless mics located in the middle of their foreheads. At first I thought it was a bad mole then realized everyone had one or in their hair. With today's tech., couldn't they be at least be the color of their skin to blend better? DPAC is an amazing venue too!

"Beautiful-The Carole King Musical" was an absolutely wonderful experience. The music was top notch, the actors were great and that band in the pit just kept rocking all afternoon long. Besides being a great play, it was great to see some of the sections break off into mini-concerts with the actors who portrayed some of the artists. Sarah Bockel was an absolutely perfect Carole King. She deserves her shot down the road to do this on a Broadway stage. It was also the perfect way to celebrate my wife's 70th Birthday. She thoroughly enjoyed it. Robinson Center is now a wonderful facility that Little Rock and the entire Central Arkansas region can be proud of. Great seats, great sound and wonderful preparations by Celebrity Attractions-LR made this a day to remember.

I bought tickets back in July for my two grown daughters and 3 of my g'kids who do performing arts to come experience this show. Carole King has been the theme music to my life since I was a teenager and her talents continue to amaze me. To see her younger years performed and TWENTY-SEVEN songs not only written but then performed by the bands who made her famous, was simply beautifully amazing. The voices of every single singer in the group carried so well, the costuming, lived up to all expectations. The lighting was gorgeous, the stage sets were state of the art, love that the scenes and props were motorized and smoothly transitioned off/on easily without disrupting the flow of the story, and the entire stage frame lit up in Broadway lights, simply perfect. If that isn't enough, the script was funny, yet poignantly written with big laughs from the audience. I loved every minute and wish I could afford to go see it again while it's in Seattle.

Just wow... Ms. King is a master at her craft and a true modern rags to riches story! I learned much about her early career as a hit songwriter for other groups before she launched her solo singing career. She is a brilliant writer & collaborator. Becoming aware of her personal life and its challenges, heartbreaks & triumphs, combined with her coming of age business savvy was fascinating. How she did it all while raising a family in the 60's? Remarkable. The musical score was amazing and the vocals were strong and emotional -- several numbers brought tears to my eyes. In fact, I think the LA company created a better soundtrack than the original Broadway cast (and yes, I bought the original soundtrack so I think I can say this). Abby Mueller knocked it out of the park as Carole. Carole King's Tapestry has special meaning for me as it was one of the first vinyl albums I wore out on a portable turntable with my sister and best friend neighbor. We listened to the record hundreds of times on our bedroom floor and learned every word to every song.

This musical not only had music, it also had heart and soul. I wanted to see this because I like Carole King. Anyone who is even remotely a fan of music should see this. I wasn't expecting it to be as humorous as it was and there were a few tears shed during it too. The sets were bright and showbiz-y during many of the songs. The five main characters - Abby Mueller as Carole King, Liam Tobin as Gerry Goffin, Becky Gulsvig as Cynthia Weil, Ben Fankhauser as Barry Mann and Curt Bouril as Don Kirshner as an ensemble made this play as great as it is. I also have to give props to Suzanne Grodner who played Carole King's mother, Genie Klein. The play contains songs that you've probably heard on the radio millions of times and not realize that Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote them...because other artists made them famous. It takes you through that musical history and on top of that, you'll learn about Carole King's young life. I gave this five stars, which translates to "Amazing" and in my opinion, it was amazing. Worth every penny I paid for the ticket and parking. Don't hesitate to see it.

The Carole King musical, Beautiful, opened at the Hobby Theater tonight and the show put me in a 70s state of mind. I find myself beamed back to my high school days when I used to adore Carole King and her music; and I would play her Tapestry album over and over again. I am reminded of how huge of a fan I was and still am. The play also made me get to know Carole King on a more personal level and realize how her songs are so much about her life. The first act was devoted to the early songs she collaborated with her first husband Gerry Goffin in NY that became #1 hits in the 60s such as Aretha Franklin's You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman and The Shirelles' Will You Love Me Tomorrow. The second act was what moved me more because it is when Carole King, fed up with her husband's infidelity, decides to end her marriage, move to LA and break out on her own. Significantly, that led to the birth of the distincly beautiful Carole King sound that would define an era. No longer a half of a song, the doors were flung wide open for her and she finally found the freedom to express her true self in a bigger and better way. "It's Too Late" has become a more emotional song to me now that I understand the story and pain behind it. My tears welled up soon after the first bar of "You've Got a Friend" when she was about to move to LA and leave her friends in NY behind. The finale with Carole at the piano in Carnegie Hall singing, "Beautiful" is a feel-good, cathartic ending that affirms that something beautiful can come out of pain. I really had a fabulous time tonight and really loved the show! It was funny, honest and poignant. If I had my way though, I would cut back on the 60s hit parade and include more Carole King songs from the 70s...but of course, I'm biased.

We had second row orchestra seats for a very reasonable price compared to NY, and so we were pleased with that. The woman who helped me at Ticket Master was absolutely sensational. She was very diligent and patient. The venue doesn't have an aisle in the center, and that is somewhat concerning. Had there been need for a quick exit, it wouldn't have been accomplished as well as if there had also been a center aisle. As for the show itself, though, it was a lot of fun listening to the old Carole King songs. I didn't know much of anything about how she had begun in the music business and so I found that to be interesting and entertaining. The performers were all very good--strong acting and vocal skills--as was the orchestra that accompanied them. The choreography was not only performed well but it really was in keeping with the time period, as were costumes and properties. Set changes were accomplished quickly with scenery either flying in and out or moving in and out on tracks in the floor. I was skeptical about going to a "jute box musical," but it actually turned out to be tons of fun!

I am a complete novice when it comes to plays/musicals or theater in general. The title "Beautiful" was a little misleading, but the thought of listening to the music of Carole King was a big plus. There was not a moment that the show didn't have my full attention. From the opening scene with the interaction between a young Carole and her typical Jewish mother to the cast's rendition of "I feel the Earth Move" , I was mesmerized. Highlights for me were the songs that I sang growing up (still singing them today) and the quick, amazing costume changes. Wanna know how good the show was? The last number just before intermission was "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" (The Shirelles). When I entered the men's room, half dozen gentlemen were either humming, singing, or whistling the tune. After leaving the theater I told my wife, if there had been a show the following day, Id watch it again

Beautiful does an incredible job recreating the times, the music, and the process of creating and making music that has become timeless. This music will even be appreciated by a younger generation - like my daughter and her boyfriend who had no previous idea!! But it also recreates - (as much as can be done in a 2 hour musical) - the humanity, foibles , inspirations, and frustrations of everyday life that permeate even the lives of artists who leave the rest of us this legacy. Well done!

Amazing singers, musicians and lots of laughs & some heartaches that helped make their music so real. Forgot just how many hits Carole King was a part of creating.

Living in NYC my entire life I have been spoiled going to Broadway shows. Since I was a little girl my parents started taking me to Broadway shows, so I have been lucky enough to have seen the best, including, Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl and Carol Channing in Hello Dolly. So I think I am a pretty good judge on what are good performances and what aren t. What are good set designs and what aren t. What good dancing is. Singing, etc. When I heard this show was coming to Charleston, I wanted to see it. One of my best friends still up in NY was my concert friend, Broadway show friend , when we were teenagers. So when she and her husband saw this show, and she told me how great it was, I knew I had to see it. I remember Carole King started out in the 60 s writing these rock and roll singles. But had no idea to what extent. And did not know much about the other couple who wrote some of the best songs of all times as well and were best friends with Carole and her first husband at the time. I had to twist the arm of a friend to go see it with. Did she thank me after the show. I have to say that the singing was outstanding. Just as good as what you would see on Broadway. The dancing. Musical numbers. The set designs. The costumes. So professional. What s best, I didn t have to spend $200 for a ticket , which I would have had to pay in Manhattan. I was very surprised that on Saturday night it was not a full house. Huh? I still don t get Charleston. How could this not be a sold out show? Carole King is an icon. I was glad to see a mother and her teenage daughter sitting next to us. That was encouraging. But not too many younger people. That s a shame.

I had wanted to see this show and now I can compare it with the Broadway version. If it is half of this show, it will be spectacular. It was funny, sad, filled with the great music. A show for everyone.

So glad we saw this show! Awesome and super fun. Beautiful performances of these incredible songs! We had no idea the show was so funny or that it had so many big numbers, not to mention the beautiful sets and everything else. Just loved everything about this show and so did everyone we were with. We would see it again. Don't miss it if you love songs / songwriting / stories behind the music of the 60s-70s / rise to fame true stories, etc. Best show we've seen in ages.

This performance was outstanding! Actors well matched to real life persons they portrayed. Music and staging was reflective of the music of the time.

This musical was very very good. It spans the beginning of the rise of Carol Klein (King) and we see what an accomplished writer and performer she is at a young age. It was entertaining, funny and sad and best of all, you hear her music. This was a great play and I would heartily recommend.

The show was fantastic, and the music even better. I learned a good bit about our music history as well! As with all theaters, the seating is a little tight, but the PAC has the best women's restroom anywhere, haha! I got through what looked like a a 30 minute line in about 5 minutes, so didn't miss a thing!!

I loved this musical. I wore out the Tapestry album when in college and have always been a big fan of Carole King. This show was very well done and I learned more about Carole King and the many songs she wrote. The performances and voices were very good. Loved everything about it. Highly recommend it.

Anyone who likes Carol King should enjoy the play, but a fan of 50's and 60's music as done by groups like the Drifters and the Shirelles should love it. Their performances, all coming in the first act, turned out to be the best part of the play. When the show focused more on King, her marriage and her transition to recording in the second act, the pace slowed down considerably. It was okay overall, although the group rendition of one of my favorite King songs, You've Got a Friend, lacked the soul that both King and James Taylor incorporated in their versions and as a result was IMO the low point of the show. Still, overall, a good production that fans of King should enjoy.

My husband loves Carole King but didn't want to see a 76 year old try to belt out her hit songs. I assured him it was a young, energetic cast and I was right. Telling Carole's story through the history of the songs kept our interest (like Jersey Boys). Chilina Kennedy is bright and talented as Carole. The rest of the cast also does well. These characters are likable. A couple of costume changes are out of a magic show (how'd they DO that?). The pace is great. And of course the songs are well known by us boomers. I suspect almost everyone left the theater feeling happier than when they came in. Recommend the show without hesitation.

Masterfully done - one of the best performances I have been to. Wonderfully touching story about an amazing musical legend. I had no idea of the depth of her talent.
