Mos Def

MOS DEF / YASIIN BEY IN CONCERT:As one of hip hop's most revered lyricists, Mos Def never ceases to surprise and impress with his dexterous flow. On stage, he cuts a stylish figure, effortlessly displaying his wordsmithing skills, charismatic energy, and boundless positivity while paying tribute to cultural icons like Mohammed Ali. Whether performing with longtime collaborator Talib Kweli or rolling solo, Mos makes sure crowds are bumped, grinded, and fully educated in the "fundamental mathematics" of his intricate verses, laying it down as only he can on tracks like "Ms. Fat Booty" and "Body Rock.

Great show. This was at the end of the historic Howard Theater's re-opening week, after many years of neglect, and an extensive renovation. The theater was fantastic. The show was phenomenal. I was expecting Yasiin Bey to deliver a steady flow of his signature rap & hip hop hits. HOWEVER, was pleasantly surprise b/c the show ended up more as a tribute to Gil Scott Heron...Bey actually ended up *singing* most of the setlist. Want to give this 4.5 stars...because the show started over an hour late (??) with no explanation or heads up from the theater staff (??). I was started to wonder if there was even going to *be* a show...then the curtain lifted, with Bey and the band ready to groove. Bottom Line: I'll go back to this theater!

Great performance, tremendous talent. However, the event didnt start on time and he only performed for about an hour........so it wasnt really worth the money in that sense. But overall it was a good performance, I wished he did more of his older songs but the ones that he did do were good though. I wished he rapped more sang less......but other than that he was great! Now for the venue I attribute the slow and mediocure service to the fact that they just recently opened and have not developed their flow yet, but the food and drinks like at any other theater over priced and not strong enough. So dont go there to get drunk, dont go there to get full and not spend a bunch of money. But the venue is BEAUTIFUL great atmoaphere imagine a mix between a lounge, club and ampatheater but aimed for audiences of color will be going back if a good show is in town and reasonable.

The show started late. Most likely because there was another performer before the Yasiin Show. It was a great performance. He came out and got right to business. He grooved to his own music the way each person in the venue would have done. The 3 piece band was fantasic. When Yasiin got on the keys....it was an absolute delight. I would definately see him again. Some seemed upset that he didn't do Ms. Fat Booty, but that song in particular did not fit with the set. It was very much a tribute to Gil Scott Heron...he did a fabolous job and I would definately pay to see him again. The venue was perfect for the set he performed. You could see the stage with a clear view from every seat. Very comfortable and not over crowded.

Great venue at HOB, as always. Really fun and dynamic opening acts at the Mos Def show in May. Unfortunately, Mos Def either showed up late or just decided to start an hour after the 2nd opening act. The packed crowd even started to boo during the wait. When he finally started his set, he made no mention of the long wait and barely acknowledged the crowd. Of course, the music and his performance were solid but by then it was too late. His lateness and detachment made him come off like a wannabe star which is a shame because the dude is one of the most talented artists working today.

He made us, his "fans" wait over 2 hours for him to finally come out. Singing songs from new album that honestly, I wasn't feeling. He looked like he was on "something". My friend and I left after 20 minutes. A very disappointing concert. The last time I saw him a few years ago he was great, I don't know what happended??? :(

I love Hip Hop music but one of the things that's always bothers me is the fact that the majority of Hip Hop Artists think they don't need to stick to a schedule or rehearse their show. They show up 2-3 hours late, they walk out on stage with their crew and all just walk back and forth rapping over each other, screaming out,"You Know What i'm Saying and Where's my N@%#'a's at!?!" I still go to a ton of shows hoping to find the few that put on a well thought out, talented performance. I was SURE Mos Def would be one of those performers. I was WRONG. He came out 3 hours late and when he did he jumped around like he was on Angel Dust, Mumbling and humming parts of his songs. I own almost all his work and I could BARELY make out what the hell he was doing. It was horrible. We left half way through and our other two friends left earlier than that. Horrible. Waste of time and Money. He doesn't need the money so I'd ASSUME he does it for the love of music but that wasn't music. It was garbage. It seemed he thought he was so good that all he needed to do was crank up the reverb and hum songs to earn his money. The only redeeming part of the show was Supernatural. He was awesome and put on a AWESOME show. I was caught off guard by how good he was live. See him if you can. Don't give Mos Def a glance in concert unless he starts to take it serious, like it's his job... which it is! Hopefully artists will one day realize that, considering they don't make money on albums anymore.

I've seen Mos Def about a dozen times and every single show has always been more amazing than the last. He always takes it back to his classic Black On Both Sides and even his Black Star material with suprise appearances sometimes from Talib Kweli. His shows are one of the few hip hop shows that manages to get the crowd excited from beginning to end. I can't wait until he tours again for his new album, The Ecstatic - his best material since his first. HIGHLY recommended!

Mos is 100% in the moment and his show was an intimate experience with a nearly sold out crowd of true Mos Def fans. Love that he chooses venues where you can engage with him and his music no matter where you sit. His DJ's are exceptional and it was worth the 2 hour drive to attend. Great ambiance, music, flow, and who knew Mos could step and dance like he did.

Couldnt have asked for a better night...the ONLY bad thing I could say is that it took a long time for the concert to start. Mos Def was gracious enough to walk right up to me and speak before the show. It was irreplacable to have the opportunity to tell an artist I've respected for so long that his music is appreciated. The opening acts went from bad to good, started off with Soulcannon, a Baltimore group. Whosane was decent, Medina Green was very good. Jay Electronica was a good performer, funny, and is an artist I'd definitely like to hear more from.Nice opera voice lol. He also was down to earth and was more than happy to take a picture and speak, much respect for that. Talib Kweli was incredible, my favorite artist of all time so it was enthralling seeing him perform for the first time. Mos rocked it as well, on the drums and the mic. They were both feeding off the crowd's good energy and it made for beautiful sets, individually and especially together. Thank you guys for an amazing night!

Let me be honest yasiin bay aka mos def is amazing and watching him perform was a true treat. hearing an complete showcase of gil scoot heron in his own style was truely enjoyable. however there where a few problem with the concert. One it statred extermly late had to wait an entire hour and half just before the show started. the actual stand area was very small, as most of the room was taken up by chairs and tables. Still the concert was enjoyable

I really enjoyed this show. The newly rennovated Howard theatre was magnificent. Yasiin Bey put on a magnificent show, however if your looking for the black star Mos Def this isn't for you. He changed up his style a bit and is doing more scatting, soulful, hip-hop type music. I loved it, but again if your looking for a rap concert this isn't it.

The show was nice, but from scheduled to actual time he performed there was an hour and a half time delay. Not cool in my opinion. I almost asked for a refund, but I drove all the way out to DC. The music was dope, but I was hoping for more of an upbeat mix. After a couple of songs, I noticed several people sleeping. It was late, I was drinking, I understood and was sleepy too! I had hoped for more, but oh well.

It was supposed to be a Gil Scott Heron tribute. Mos is good, the band was good. There was way too much chatter in the audience. I also think Mos should have played more of Gil's songs and mixed in more familiar songs like Winter In America, Spirits, The Bottle, Angel Dust. I think most people were expecting to or wanted to hear MD songs.

My review of this event was lackluster due to two main reasons. First, the event was suppose to start at 11pm but unfortunately began at 12:40 am. I am not sure what the circumstances were but I felt that someone at the Howard Theater could have informed patrons about the tardiness to allay the situation. Also, if you have a international star like Mos why wouldn't you play his music while patrons wait? I heard every other artists except for him-that blew me away!! Second, after waiting I anticipated some classics like: Sunshine, Ms. Fat Booty, Danger, Got, Brooklyn, Katrina Clap, or anything that would be well known by his fans but that wasn't the case. As a result, I was disappointed.

Peace Yasiin Bey.....Yo he had a hot show at The Howard Theater. Big up to his band. I could feel that he truly loved the great Gil Scot Heron. He rocked " Home is where the hatred is". The song is one of my personal favorite and Yasiin put his heart into that rendition, so I appreciate that one.

Opening acts were great!! Very entertaining local bands which was awesome. After the second one was done, waited almost an hour looking at an empty stage and decided to leave. I'm older (40), my wife is younger (32). If I were in my 20's I probably wouldn't care. We have been following him since his early days, so were excited to see the show. I took my boyfriend to the show for his birthday. The opening acts were awesome! Especially Bad Rabbits. It was however quite annoying that for an 8 p.m. start time, Mos Def didn't hit the stage until 10:45. After the 2 opening acts there was almost an hour of waiting in the theater for him to hit the stage. During this time the lights came on and the there was some Afro Beat music playing in the background. By the time he hit the stage, neither one of us felt that his performance was worth the wait. Honestly we left feeling like we would have rather just seen a whole show by Bad Rabbits, which is sad because we are both HUGE Mos Def fans.

This was the first time I left a show. I love Mos Def and I saw him a few years ago in SF and loved the show. That was not the case this time. The opening acts, Moe Pope and Bad Rabbits were great. Then we had to wait an hour for Mos Def to come on. When he finally came on, you could barely make out a word he said and he spent a bunch of time dancing around to other peoples' music. He seemed wasted or something. There was definitely something wrong with the sound so I can't blame him for that but his performance was pretty bad and we left after the fourth or fifth song. My other friends left before he came on because they got sick of waiting. I saw a number of folks leave during the show. What a disappointment

The show wasn't as fun as I was expecting. I guess I'm a bit old school, but I guess I was hoping he'd play some of his Black on Both Sides hits. His new stuff is pretty abstract, and he spent a lot of time on stage just grooving to the beat instead of actually rapping, which was weird. It's funny, the opening act Bad Rabbits actually had way more energy than Mos, and I had a lot of fun when they were on stage. Too bad that wasn't the case for the headliner. Also, he took a REALLY long time to come out. Unless you're really into his newer stuff, I'd sit this one out.

I'm a huge Mos Def fan. I remember buying Black on Both Sides the day it came out.... which is part of the reason why the Mos Def show was such a disappointment. He didn't do enough of his back catalog and his live performance (although animated) suffered from a hard to hear and muffled delivery.

OK - after seeing Mos with Blackstar and other venues through the years, I had pretty high hopes. Missed the first opener, but the second totally rocked - local band Bad Rabbits were super tight, energetic and "on." Built up great excitement and momentum. Then they left and we waited. And waited. And waited. There was no setup to be done, the stage was just empty - for almost an hour. The crowd was yelling about it and getting quite restless. Then some DJs wandered out. So there was no band, only two DJs who didn't seem to know the songs or set list too well. Mos Def's style and flow were good, but he did not drum (as he as at other shows) and never truly pulled in the crowd past the first few rows. About 3/4 of the way through, people started leaving. I'd estimate in our mezzanine section, at least 50 people left - if not more. Then he ended, no encore, lights came up and it was over. It was just sort of disappointing for a performer who usually brings such energy and exuberance to a show.

First of all, local act Headnotic and Moe Pope were amazing, but as every opening act knows, the crowd may not respond the way you like so early in the evening. Loved them though. 2nd opening act, Bad Rabbits, were equally amazing in talent but the lead singer spent WAY too much time chastising the audience for not clapping and responding the way he wanted. We didn't pay money to see you guys, and most of us had never heard of you. Work WITH us, not against us. I loved your music and your swag - just don't take it out on us. Let your music speak for itself. The Wilbur Theater is a curious venue for a hip-hop concert. I believe that the problems both opening acts faced were amplified for Mos Def. If you hold a concert in a large venue with SEATS, people are coming to see a show, not be a part of one. But as we know, Hip-Hop concerts are interactive, and the spaced-out audience due to the theater arrangement made it very difficult for the artists to connect. Then there was the artist himself. Mos Def is no longer Mos Def. He is Yaslin Bey, and had he been billed as "Yaslin Bey (formerly Mos Def)", I believe the audience wouldn't have responded with the big "?" that we did as we tried to navigate the starts and stops and seemingly unbalanced show we witnessed. This concert would have been AMAZING if in a venue with only 60-75 people. It was more erudite and eclectic than most fans expected. I was hoping for a flurry of hits from Blackstar, Black on Both Sides, and other rare cuts, but what we got was a lot of Ecstatic and new material - not bad stuff, it just was hard to figure out where he was coming from or going. When the lights came on at the end, the crowd was miffed like "that's it?" But all respect to Mos Def, he can do whatever he wants to - he's the artist. Just take us on the trip WITH you next time - not just throw it at us and expect us to catch.

I have been a fan of hip hop for as long as I can remember. I have seen both Mos Def & De La Sol in concert before. I was so excited when I found out they were touring together and right here in Philly! I love the Trocedero and thought it would be the concert of a lifetime. Boy was I disappointed. The opening acts were OK. Seeing Pete Rock was pretty sweet. Finaly De La came on and they were awesome but their mics were up so loud you couldn't even understand what they were saying. And then after HOURS of waiting for Mos Def to come on he only played a few songs! Are you kidding me? I waited hours to see Mos Def perform for 45minutes? And I was disappointed with his set list. He played a lot of stuff from his newest album which I love but he should have mixed it up more. I didn't pay $100 for me and my husband to go to a Mos Def concert to then only see him on stage for 45 minutes. BOO!

I did not appreciate that the show started at 8pm, and we had to wait in the freezing cold for almost 45 minutes after the show was supposed to start.... Mos Def performed very well i just wish that things would have happen on time as scheduled.

This was a good concert all and all. I had not heard of Hezekiah before, but was impressed by his performance and will now be in the look out for him. DeLa was good of course and did their thing. Slick Rick........come on it's Slick Rick of course he did his thing. Mos Def was good, but I must admit I did not know a lot of his new stuff. But the main reason I went to this concert was to see Jay Electronica, and for some reason that was not explained at the concert he did not perform. That left me somewhat disappointed. If I go to another concert at the Troc I will be sure to get tickets early so I can get a seat. Standing for 3 hours took some of the fun out of it after a while.

I've been a Mos Def fan since BlackStar but had never seen him live. After seeing him at the Troc, I'll never pass the opportunity again. It was a bold decision to have Pete Rock and De La Soul come on before him. Pete Rock worked the crowd from behind the turntables--it was like he turned the joint into his own personal party. De La Soul rocked the crowd the way only old school hip hop groups can. I wasn't sure if Mos Def could compete with those two. They had the crowd absolutely buzzing. Mos Def sauntered onto stage, opening with "The Tournament," and lulled the crowd into focus--just where he wanted them--as he sang the words, "total control ..." And with that, he utterly changed the tone and feel of the show. For the next hour or so, he rapped, he sang, he smiled and laughed, he danced and gyrated his hips (he has a little Mick Jagger feel about him on stage, albeit more light-hearted). At one point, he jumped behind a drum set and performed two radically different renditions of "Quiet Dog." It was a refreshing and overwhelming original performance. He wasn't trying to be hard or cool or turn the crowd into a mob. It was simply a celebration of music and songwriting, and I don't know if I've ever seen anyone enjoy himself so much on stage. Whether he was performing a track from "The Ecstatic," dusting off a track from "Black on Both Sides," or behind the drum set, he sounded perfect. Great, great show.

It was upsetting to learn that Jay Electronica was a no-show. Pete Rock went on for a little too long as the crowd grew restless and anxious to see a REAL performance. I enjoyed the music of Hezikaiah and Me So Horny. The saxaphonist was awesome. The highlight of the night was De La Soul's performance... HANDS DOWN!!! If y'all are reading this, De La Soul, please come back to Philly or Camden (Susquehanna Bank Center) and do it again soon! I love Mos Def's music but I'll never pay to see him perform live again. He was pretty boring. I left early. I hope I didn't miss anything. Sorry Mos.

Awesome show. Pete Rock killed it at the beginning. Played some classics. De La came out and just obliterated the stage. They interacted with the crowd and really put on a great show. The MC (Hezekiah) was booed for about two minutes straight and tried to talk to the crowd about openning your mind to new music...then blasted a lot of the younger rappers out there ( pretty sure he was talking about Drake) for not having a knowledge of the history of rap. He didn't know how to handle the show stalling and that didn't help. Mos Def came out and did well. He did more of his new stuff and I don't think a lot of people in the crowd were expecting that (don't know why not). But he won everyone over as a true artist should. Overall it was a great show. Didn't get to see jay electronica though.

Mos Def and Talib Kweli killed it! Mos played the drums, performed songs from all his albums, and did some Michael Jackson. He brought Talib back out for some Black Star and the crowd went crazy! A brilliant, intelligent, and talented man.

Yo, everytime I hear this dude he amazes me. In concert he was absolutely wonderful. He played the drums, gave a Micheal Jackson tribute, and keep the energy high. Since he was the headliner I expected for him to come on last and only do a few songs. Well Mos Def took us on a musically tour starting with my favorite joints off the Escatic album and working his way backward, True Magic, New Danger, and Black on both sides. It was awesome!

Wow, where do i start? The show was just ok, def not worth the 45$ I spent to get in!! The opening acts were horrible and got booed off the stage.. Kweli was great, the only light on the night.. He came out did his thing and you could tell the crowd was involved.. Mos Def diddent even bother to come out till 12:30, and at that point the crowd was only half there and not live at all.. I was totally disappionted with his whole act, and ended up leaving after about 4 songs!!

this show was truly ecstatic and one of the best hip hop shows i've been to, if not.. the best. Mos did an unbelievable job ending the ecstatic tour in philadelphia. the show started at 8:30 and me and my crew didn't leave until 2:30. The opening acts warmed up the crowd, Jay Electronica got close and personal with the audience, Talib did a heart-pumping set on his own, then came the main attraction.. Big Mos him self kickin it off with him playing the drums and rappin at the same time. Then the Blackstar duo reunited and did an amazing set together, Mos started wrappin up the show with a few shout outs to people such as Kanye West and doing covers to unforgettable songs such as Billie Jean by the late Michael Jackson. And finally ending everything in a dramatic drum solo. i would really recommend anyone thats a true hip hop head to go see Mos whenever he goes on tour again. He definitely wont disappoint you.

assault on the ears. i've noticed a pattern at hip-hop shows. a lot of performers that are loud and sometimes suck before the main event. by tie time Mos was ready to come on I had had enough.

This was a really good show. Medina Greene wasn't as good as i would've liked, however Jay Electronica definitly brought his lyrics with him. Talib Kweli was amazing hes always good. Same with Mos Def. I heard all of my favorite songs, which is very rare for any show for me. Then Mos and Talib did a few Blackstar songs together. The set lasted a long time as well, it was well worth my money. Sorry for the low quality pic, its hard to catch Mos and Talib standing still on thier own let alone at the same time.

I was lucky enough to cross paths with Mos Def's mixer at an undisclosed location and we hit it off immediatly. He offered to me (2 ) All Access passes for my friend and I and we had a blast.Mos Def is and will always be a TRUE man in the game. His range of knowledge and to be able to put it all in one tight package of energy was worth it's weight in gold.

Waiting until midnight for Mos Def to start his show was extremely annoying especially since the ticket read 9:30 with the venue opening at 7. Mos brought his usual energy to the stage but I've enjoyed him much much more when he's backed by a band rather than a DJ.

Show was supposed to start at 9pm. Opening acts came on at 10:30pm. Mos didn't come on until 12!!! Everyone was restless, but as soon as Mos got into his set, it was an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life. Monumental. I don't say that much either, but you take it with a grain of salt.

The opening acts were lukewarm at best. the guy who went on directly before Mos Def was terrible. He actually begged for weed from audience members. We would have been better off with the mediocre music the DJ played. Never has the idea of throwing a tomato on stage appealed to me more. Just terrible!!!! Mos Def didn't go on until maybe midnight (almost and hour after his lead in). Mos did a great job after finally making it to the stage although it was obvious that he was flying high, high, high.

Last nights show was great. The opening acts ripped it. Medina Green and Hussein u gotta check for those dudes. Jay Elect u owe me a lighter, this dude is peace, comedic and ill with the rhymes...what we need in Hip Hop. Mos...well what can I say...MADNESS. Mos kept it going for about 2 hours..incredible. All his best from Black On Both Sides, New Danger, Ecstatic, Blackstar and he paid homage to the original artists sampled on his albums. Mos didn't have any surprise guests and didn't need any. Def closed it down with Umi Says...5 Stars Def one of the best Hip Hop shows I've hit up in years...shouts to the engineers who had the sound check on point...mics were clear and beats weren't distorted. If u missed it u missed out....

While mos def was amazing the show on a whole was only fair. Hussein was amazing. That medina person was terrible. I thought they took him off the local Brooklyn corner. Jay electronica talked waaay too much. The breaks between artist were long and unexplained. Mos Certainly made up for the wait to see him but he could have been all alone for only an hour and it would have been a 5 star show.

Though it was painful to wait for Mos Def to finally come on stage, once he was on, he delivered a great show. He performed about 2/3 of his new album, the estatic, and surprised us with some oldies and samples. Mos also gave tribute to the king of pop with a great performance of Billy Jean. Always soulful in his voice and dance, I experienced a new level of his artistry from this performance.

the warm up act was enjoyable although can't recall his name jay electronica was an embodiment of disfunction- requiring self medication in order to feel at ease- perhaps this is not his calling On a brighter note, Ms. Badu's performance was entertaining while being informative and making a statement. Saving the best for last-Mos Def was in fact mos def; showing a full range of his many talents, enjoyed the salute to Michael Jackson and duet with Ms. Badu.

With some fair opening acts and a stunning performance by Kweli, this show was well worth attending. I have few positive remarks to say on the performance of Mos Def - and was disappointed by the lack of interaction between the two. It felt more like solo acts than the infamous Black Star duo.

The Black Star album has been one of my favorites for years: this was a once in a lifetime chance to Mos Def and Talib Kweli perform together again! They played their own stuff separately and then did a handfull of some Black Star songs together. It was awesome. Then Mos Def did a version of Billy Jean as a tribute to Michael Jackson and a cool rendition of Leaving on a Jet Plane.... Everyone was having fun it was cool.

This how was absolutely amazing. I have never seen Mos def live and from the first to last song I was absolutely floored. Mos's live show becomes more of an act that goes along with the music which in turn makes the crowd feel as if something totally amazing is taking place. Talib Kweli also came out strong and then returned for some epic Blackstar tunes which put the crowd in a time machine and it was like the cd had just hit stores. Next time he comes around and your a fan of the music you cannot miss it

The show opened up with the lyrical stylings of the New York rapper, Whosain, not Medina Green. I felt that Whosain was very talented but nothing too outstanding. The second opening act, Jay Electronica, was good enough to a headliner anywhere else. His raps were smooth, calm, and poetical and his personality and stage presence were over the top and hilarious. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the entire show or me, was that I felt Talib Kweli did a better job rapping and performing on stage than even the Mighty Mos Def, who was, in his own right, amazing.

It was good to see M.D. and T.K together and playing one of their sons. I like Mos Def 's idea of using other instruments on the stage and using news arrangements in his music.
