Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Touring)

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (Touring)

Brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the landmark American musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage.

My fear was the stage presentation woud not live up to the movie. My fears were unfounded. Stage is a completely different medium. I spent the whole time awestruck fighting urge to jump up dancing and singing along. I feel for those who thought this was about Hedwig the Owl.

I love the Pantages and go to every show possible. Although the cast is very talented, not enough music for my taste. Very long and boring dialogue. I saw people walking out and I would have walked out if I had driven. Thank goodness I did not buy expensive seats.

Great show. Really enjoyed it and Darren Criss made this his role. Cannot imagine someone else as Hedwig. My only issue was with the lighting. The strobes and bright lights were a little much for the this theater.

Exactly what I said in the title. I'll forever be thankful for this show. It has everything , Funny parts, sad and emotional parts, hurt, pain, raw passion and mindblowing songs. As soon as Hedwig hits the stage you're captured in her story and you cannot escape. It's strong, it's raw, it's an emotional roller coaster. The show itself is wonderful and Darren Criss makes everything even better. His energy is compelling and unstoppable. He's a bomb of energy, talent and emotions that explodes on stage and hits you and you can't and don't want to look away. he has the whole audience in his hands. His voice and his moves will change you're life. Go. Let yourself be led by Hedwig in her wicked little story.

Music was too loud and hard to understand. No set changes or production values. Darren Criss has a good voice and was wasted in this production. He made a bad decision accepting the lead in this musical. I couldn't wait for it to end and would have walked out had I not been with three other friends.

Having seen Hedwig twice on Broadway (and talked to others who've seen this production), I was very much looking forward to seeing the production again, even if it meant a pilgrimage to the soulless barn that calls itself the Hollywood Pantages Theatre. The production transitions well from the NY stage and audiences frequently found there to the gymnasium-like feel of most arena-sized houses with "solid, church-going citizens" in the seats. This show is a bit "over the top," and though the properly-dressed nice folks in the crowd didn't embrace it, the L.A. didn't seem to mind the profanity, raunchy sexual references, and more. Hedwig is done quite well, and I could easily see it a few more times.

The set, sound, lights, & costumes all contribute to the musical, showcasing the way that Hedwig's mental state changes. The band (returning from the Original Broadway Cast) plays their roles and the music perfectly. Tony winner Lena Hall steals every moment as Yitzhak, Hedwig's husband full of repressed anger and longing for love. Her voice is magnificent and blends well with Darren Criss, who somehow manages to make us love Hedwig despite the way she treats her husband, her band, and even the audience. Darren is a revelation in the role, full of energy in all the choreography and physicality needed for the part and yet can also play the quiet sadness in the ballads perfectly too. The best show I have ever seen at the Pantages.

Pseudoprofound in the way that only a true rock musical can be, Hedwig and the Angry Inch takes the movie and makes it WAY more entertaining and effective. "The Origin of Love", so striking in the film, here becomes the grand spectacle extraordinary, on every conceivable level. Darren Criss gives us a Hedwig that we allow to take us all the way into transsexual identification and the beauty of love and creation within rock reality.

The venue was beautiful. Loved the theater and atmosphere. The play was probably my least fav I've seen, and I see a lot of plays. I couldn't understand the lyrics in the music. The plot was hard to follow. I'm not even sure what really happened at the end. The lights were way over the top. I had to close my eyes, they were blinding. I go to the theater many times a year. I love it. I would not recommend this show to anyone.

Don't expect normal musical theatre. Expect a night at a rock club with a drag queen who has a thin story to tell. Once you "get into the character" it is an endearing story. Performed by a very talented individual with an abundance of energy. A theatre piece that is not meant for everyone. Some catchy tunes, some dramatic outlook. All in all a nice night out.

Glad that I read a synopsis ahead of time or I wouldn't have understood what was going on at all. Having read some of the other reviews, I was concerned that I would find the music to be too loud. I didn't. But I do think they could have done some better sound mixing bringing out the lyrics a bit better. I was sitting in the second row and still missed a number of stretches of the songs. The set also made no sense that I could tell. The "plot" was weird and under developed. It was just pretty odd all the way around. I have no complaints related to the performance. All six performers were fine, particularly the two leads. It just was a really dumb piece and I don't normally mind weirdness. I can't remember the last time I sat in a live performance and started trying to see my watch less than halfway through.

I mean, wow. The incredible music is just a small part of what makes this show so special. The Hedwig character is so rich with contradiction: Male but female. Sad but optimistic. Her hidden desires make for catchy but deep rock songs. You can see her story through her telling of it. For anyone who ever felt like they're living a double-life, even in the most casual sense, this is a must-experience show.

I love the movie and was curious how such a small cast working with a single set could capture the story. Euan Morton and his band did that along with putting us in the middle of an amazing rock concert. No home listening can equal this experience! I'm sure having a star like Neil P Harris boosted interest on Broadway but Morton's singing was better. More powerful. More emotional. With most musicals you just sit back and enjoy. Hedwig pulls you into the experience like nothing else.

The band is tight -- consummate musicians all -- the songs are decent and the two leads are great singers. The sets and special effects are great. However, I was not deeply satisfied with the show. Part of the reason has to do with the way the show is written: it's basically a one-man show that gets its energy from Hedwig's bitchiness, but also tries to bring in a bit of pathos that it doesn't quite earn. As a result, you need a lead actor who can really amp up the bitchiness -- play with it, make it his/her own in a fun and flexible way. But while the actor playing Hedwig was athletic, earnest and engaged, he just didn't seem to invest much emotional energy into the part, and seemed to replace bitchiness at times with mere shock value. There were multiple opportunities for him to stop a beat, and/or do a meaningful glance, and/or elongate a word and/or improvise -- but the actor while very competent never rose to that challenge.

I've been a big fan of Hedwig and the Angry Inch for years, but I have never been able to see it live. Once I saw they were coming to STL, I HAD to go! To say that I loved it would be an understatement. Euan Morton was charming, quippy, charismatic as Hedwig. He sounded fantastic and had true stage presence. Hannah Corneau really blew me away as Yitzhak. Her body mannerisms were perfect and her voice was beautiful and yet still rock and roll. All of the other cast mates, you guys rock truly. The set design was great, The Origin of Love being one of the most beautiful performances with the projections swirling around like a dream. If I could, I would see it again!

Let me just begin with that this show isn't for everyone. Quite a few people left during my show. My personal experience though was not hampered by that. I am a HUGE fan of the movie and I was ecstatic when I heard that it was going to be touring. It was a cherry on top to have the first 2 stops star Darren Criss and Lena Hall. The show was everything I hoped for. The story and songs I love, the ad lib, and the audience participation. Darren was fantastic as Hedwig as well as voicing other characters from Hedwig's timeline. Lena, what a force to be reckoned with! Great to see her as Yitzhak, and those seeing her as Hedwig will be very lucky! I plan on seeing it again before it leaves the Pantages! Be prepared if you're sensitive to lights. There's a scene or 2 where the lights flicker like a strobe light. I was okay, but some people around me where shielding their eyes.

Lead actor held microphone directly in front of his mouth -- too close, too "foggy", too awful! I and the woman sitting next to me could NOT understand almost everything he said!!! He should have held the micorphone just below his lips and a few inches away from his mouth! Almost nobody laughed at what I assume were jokes, during the performance! I thought, since Neil Patrick Harris and Taye Diggs performed the lead role on Broadway, that it would be an awesome play!!! It was one of the worst performances I have seen...and I have seen hundreds of plays at The Fisher Theater and Masonic Temple!!! My "Overall rating" is a ZERO; NO STARS, but since it is a "*=Required field", I will have to give the performance 1 star. If I could have understood what the characters were saying, I might have thought it was a good, possibly great, play!!!

Hedwig is not always a likeable character, but she is endearing to the core in her quest to find love, meaning and acceptance in her life. She may be hard to stomach, but she is, in the end, just like the rest of us. We were disappointed in Hedwig. You can't just slap a dress on a man and think you are doing something revolutionary by having him run around a stage thrusting his pelvis everywhere. There just wasn't much substance to the show. A few moments made me laugh but otherwise it was overacted and just not good. We attended based on recommendation of my daughter, who loved the show. We were less enthusiastic, the music was good, but the monologues between the music sometimes dragged on for way too long. My daughter accurately described the show as similar to Rocky Horror Picture Show - sort of a wacky story of transgender singer. It's basically a rock musical, where you get to know the characters between rock songs. Admittedly, I was not familiar with the music before attending and that may have detracted from my enjoying the show. The music is good, but the show itself is not for everyone. There is a lot of explicit sexual references/language and some people might find that offensive (about 10 people walked out of show I attended within 15 minutes of start). I'm pretty sure the couple sitting next to us never figured out the "Angry Inch" was a reference to the remnants of a sex change operation. Like most rock shows, it was loud and strobe lights were used frequently (which give headaches to some people). All in all, I have mixed feelings about the show, and I'd be careful who I recommended attend.

An interesting story and successful run on Broadway attracted me to see this touring company version of Hedwig. The cast and on-stage band, along with special lighting effects, are in your face for the entire show (no intermission). The story unfolds at a fast pace, with lot's of funny local references to bring it home. A caveat is that It's difficult to follow the details of the story unless you have read the plot ahead of the show.. Also this is not a show that you will likely want to bring children to.

I'm sure this is a great show. However, me and my guests couldn't follow the story line because we couldn't hear the lyrics over the Rock and roll band. Such a shame. We were really looking forward to seeing this production. Additionally, the strobe lights were so bright we had to close our eyes and miss parts of the show.

Music was too loud and it was hard to understand the singing. I missed the messages and the story of Hedwig's life that was provided by the songs. I thought the play was weird. I googled the story line after the play. Should have done this before the play to understand what the play is about

The show is hilarious and the play even includes a joke about a Hurt Locker the Musical! Look on the floor for programs. I took one home and was very happy :) The show is short, only 1.5 hours with no intermission.

Loved this production. I enjoy going to the theatre and watching broadway shows. Keep up the great work. Loved the fact that the dialog was geared towards the San Diego area.

, Which they did warn us about. It was vulgar. I'm sure that some people think this is Art neither my husband or myself that so. Such a disappointing evening out.

I enjoyed this play quite a bit. But it is not for everyone! Definitely an interesting story. One problem I had though was it was difficult to understand what the title character Hedig was saying at times and what the words were he was actually singing. I did enjoy it though very much! The music was excellent.

This was a very interesting play. If you liked the Rocky Horror Picture Show, you'll love Hedwig. I felt like I'd just dropped in from Mars and landed in the middle of a production that everyone had seen before, knew the story line and the words to all the music. I didn't. I felt out of place. My favorite parts were the wigs and costuming and the early references to the recent national election which made production seem current and relevant. The rest, while well performed and exuberant, just left me emotionless.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this play. It was a wonderful blend of rock music, sexual innuendos, and a fairly compelling story. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys at least one of those three subjects. There were some children in the audience, which added to the humor (for me) because I saw how the parents shielded their children's eyes and ears. If given the chance to watch it again, I wouldn't hesitate.

I took my mom to show not expecting much. I was blown away by the story and the concert like format of the show. I really didn't know who Darren Criss was until I looked him up after his amazing performance. The guy from Glee! He proved to have more than the cookie cutter image on Glee even though he's obviously talented in the tv series. Long story short he made the show sensational. Tha pantages theater had a unique look to it that night. And the plot was perfect for Hollywood. Don't miss this show. Don't miss Darren Criss.

Enjoyed every minute of it. Never a dull moment. The story line is fast paced wthout being too rushed. The actors were great - and theyre timing was in point which made scenes even funnier. Also like that even though it was set in 80s they were able to inject current topics that made it much more relatable. So happy to be able to watch it before the run ends. Darren is a class act. Great voice and comedic timing.

I wasn't sure about Darren Criss in the role and have never been so glad to eat my words! "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" exponentially exceeded my expectations due in no small part (wink) to his mind-blowing performance. I am obsessed!

Absolutely loved this show! I'd only seen the movie before, many years ago, but all the songs came back to me. Was also lucky enough to catch the Lena Hall performance of Hedwig. Right after getting out of the show I immediately went online to try to buy tickets to a Darren Criss performance also, but they were already sold out. Should have planned ahead!

That would be my overall response. I had seen so many glowing endorsements and I love Darren Criss, but I had no clue about it otherwise. My rating is purely on Hedwig itself, not on the artists or musicians.
