The show takes the essence of the movie it's based on and delivers a show that is funny, dark, joyful with a dose of romance. It's not a show for young children (like Matilda). The lead actors and ensemble cast are amazing. Try to get orchestra seats - even if it's at the very back or side. You'll get better view or choreography and staging.

very smart staging. essence of movie brought forth without slavish adherence to original screenplay. many great themes: kindness to others, altruism, empathy, discipline, hard work all important to fight depression which is at the heart of the story. not only protagonist but backstory of multiple characters very smartly and efficiently brought out.

Tremendous fun! Saw this during opening week and smiled and laughed through the whole performance. The music is terrific, the ensemble fantastic, and the staging very inventive (Phil's disappearing acts and the way they approached vehicles were stand-out effects). Andrew Call filled in for Andy Karl, and while I'm sorry for the latter's injury, Andrew was absolutely fabulous as was the rest of the cast. This was no re-tread of the movie, and I expect great things for this show. Bravo!

Despite having the same story line as the classic film, it is a purely theatrical experience. Moreover, the production is so compelling that it is hard to imagine it any better with the original lead, now sidelined with a torn ACL, Its imaginative, charming and is set in one of the more comfortable Broadway houses. Most ambitious is its attempt to take the existential theme of the film and dig deeper . At the same time, it employs razzle dazzle as only a Iive, professional Broadway production can. Only a so-so score keeps it from getting five stars

Hilariously funny production of the film of the same name. The understudy in the lead role of Phil Connors was fantastic. The set was amazing and all the performers very professional. Songs were brilliantly funny. I would love to watch this again if it comes back to London.

This was my fourth time seeing the show and the fact that it was opening night made it all the more memorable. Andy Karl was on fire which was doubly amazing considering how badly he had injured himself a few days before. The cast blends perfectly, the sets are electric and it is an all around great time. I can't recommend it highly enough.

The problem with a show that continually replays itself - is that it continually replays itself ... over and over and over - for all the agony of its nearly 3 hours in length. There are only so many re-runs you can watch of plastic characters - and bland score ... until you wish that the alarm clock would go off for the very last time. Avoid.

Our whole family loved the musical. The play did a wonderful job of incorporating the best parts of the movie while giving depth to some of the less well-known characters and expanding. The musical was funny and creative. The set wonderful. Andy Karl is fabulous as Phil Connors. All around a fantastic show to see!

People are sometimes dubious of musicals that use movies as source material, and for good reason. (see; Ghost, Rocky, Footloose, Titanic, 9 to 5, etc, etc, etc). Fear not! Movies are sometimes inspiration for some of the great works that come to Broadway, such as The Producers, Hairspray, Rocky Horror Picture Show, & Kinky Boots. Lucky for us, Groundhog Day is in the company if the latter. The plot needs no explanation. Self-centered Pittsburgh weatherman Phil Connors is assigned to cover the annual Punxsutawney Phil shadow sighting event and gets stuck in an unending loop of repeating the same day again and again. It s a little hard to guess where they are going to go with this for 2+ hours of musical. Here we go.... The scenery really does make an incredible first impression and the set was unbelievably cool from the beginning. The stage has (stay with me here) turntables in turntables in turntables. Jean Valjean himself would have been completely lost on this crazy setup long before he ever discovered poor Fantine on her deathbed. People or objects can be turning clockwise on a smaller turntable while the larger turntable in which it is embedded moves the opposite direction, to really stunning stage effect. That, along with stellar backdrops and sets that are whisked on and off the stage like clockwork, really propels the entire story. The car chase scene is a stagecraft breakthrough and worth the price of admission alone. I have to admit that the first couple of numbers were kind of off-putting to me. They were plastic copies of the movie and felt, frankly, inauthentic. All of the emotions were played 2-dimensional and stiff. Then something rather remarkable happened. The musical pulled away from the familiar movie and began to create and inhabit its own world. With each breakneck repetition of February 2nd, another layer of paint is peeled away. We learn more about Punxsutawney, the events of the day, the people, and Phil. As Phil iterates through loop after loop, he bears witness to deeper levels of meaning and compassion for everything around him. That isn t to say that he immediately sets off on a self-improvement course. He veers through hedonism and self-destruction long before he finds his personal breakthrough. Isn t that an interesting allegory? The idea of a man on a journey is not new to musical theater. Pippin , Les Mis , and even this week s Dear Evan Hansen all fit that bill. Somehow this is a bit different. As Phil came back to the same place every morning, regardless of what he did the previous 24 hours, I started to really think about the life on a treadmill and what keeps people there. Most people have wanted to break free from something at some point in their life, whether it be a dead end job, an awful relationship, or addiction, but felt that waking up each morning put them right back where they began. The frustration of being STUCK places an indescribable weight on the soul. In the show, every repetition of the events of the day felt heavier, and the characters felt wearier. That sheen of artificiality that threw me off at first wore off and the internal struggle not only became obvious, it was visceral. Phil veered from his initial confusion, to denial, to desperation, and ultimately to acknowledgement of his situation. Indeed, Phil was stuck. We all possess the key to our own cage. The story goes that all you have to do is click your heels together and wish to go home, and soon all will be righted. Being granted that power does not mean, however, that we know how to wield it. Watching Phil being pushed deeper and deeper into his personal purgatory before he was able to chart a path to salvation was a powerful story in its own right. The fact that he needed to try again and again, and that he needed others to help him find his way add to the metaphor. The only bad news I can offer is that the show is in its final week on Broadway. If you read my notes and thought, gee, I really should get tickets , I hope you are in New York. Final performance is Sunday, September 17th.

At first, you're skeptical of another movie going through the musical factory but GROUNDHOG DAY surpasses its origins. Coming in I wondered how anyone could reprise Bill Murray's portrayal of Phil Collins. Andy Karl is spectacular in the role and made it his own. I absolutely loved this production. The cast is superb - not least is Raymond Lee as Ralph - one of the locals who accompanies Phil on the truck ride down the railroad tracks. The only bit I had any objection to was the overuse of the townspeople song and dance number and lack of attention to Phil's personal evolution. In the unlikely event someone had never seen the movie they might be hard pressed to understand all the running around to do good works in the final scenes.

FINALLY won the GROUNDHOG DAY THE MUSICAL lottery with only a few weeks to spare (the show closes Sept. 17th). Andy Karl should have won the Tony for Best Musical COMEDY actor but alas there is no such category so the more dramatic lead from "Dear Evan Hansen" ended up with the statuette. Tim Minchin proves even more versatile with his music/lyrics than he did with his previous Bdwy effort "Matilda" so this show should have a long life on tour (even South of the Mason-Dixon line thanks to a coupla country-inflected tunes from PA-based tuner).. Only thing that could have made this better (scored an Orchestra seat to boot) would have been to be sitting next to Stephanie Clark, LMT. Not sure how much of the staging will remain the same on tour as the show makes much use of a central turntable, which gives the game cast a lot of physical activity throughout the show. Even more amazing -- SPOILER ALERT -- are the "illusions' that make up a series of repetitions in the 2nd act, I'm talking 1st class David Copperfield-esque magic people!. 1st act shows off the chauvinistic aspects of the main character 'Phil' (not to be confused with the other one from Puxatawney) while 2nd act redeems him. Amazing show, I have NO IDEA why this is closing prematurely but they must have something BIG ready to bring into that theater (damn producers). Speaking of the August Wilson venue, best sightlines of ALL the Jujuamcyn's six theaters and the recent re-do expanded restrooms (a premium on Bdwy) tho they oddly put a large merchandise booth between the mens/ladies entryways. Nothing like the smell of piss while paying for a t-shirt??

I tell everyone that is willing to speak to me to go see this show! Why not tell you? I didn't even like the movie that much but this show was a bit life changing as it has made me a B'way junkie. Every show I see doesn't even come close to beating this. Andy Karl is simply incredible as Phil Conners. He's on the stage, running around, doing stunts and singing practically the entire time. The show however is probably not appropriate for kids under 14-15. There are adult situations and adult language. If you have one show to see, don't consider a different option, this is THE option! I want excuses to see it again and again and again! If you have an extra ticket, let me know. (Seriously, let me know! ;-)

Andy Karl is a show stopper in and of himself, but the entire cast, production and event are really memorable and FUN! And, to top it all off there's actually a very simple moral to the whole story (as many probably already know from the movie) but it's presented here in a fresh light and with two very endearing actors doing it for us. In addition, the audience really gets "into the show" with the cast (I've seen it twice now in NY and plan to take other friends in the future as well). All in all a really terrific way to spend a few hours indulging in the theater.

I am truly shocked at how much I adored this musical. Walking into it - I was not prepared to like it much, since it was based on the movie, which I wasn't thrilled with, but along with my adoration of musicals I figured I'd give it a shot. Here's the end result: it is in my top 5 favorite musicals to date. A big reason is the story line and how it was re-created so brilliantly by TIM MINCHIN. It completely kept the audience engrossed. The stage set - particularly the scenery and lightning - were captivating. All those responsible for the illusions, the lighting and scene design deserve huge accolades for their visionary work. Spectacular. The story is 100% more suitable for theater with the dramatic elements being communicated so eloquently by the cast. It's not a story filled with excitement, sadness, or extreme emotion - it's quite the opposite which is part of the reason it is so brilliant. Every day life - the disconnect of going through the same routine day in & day out......and not taking the opportunity to utilize the power we actually have - to possibly change things for the better - what human being at even one point in their life hasn't been able to relate to this? It can take the heart right out of you, as it did for Phil Connors, played so brilliantly by ANDY KARL. Here is an actor who could have so easily overdone his scenes. And yet - had the superb talent and ability to portray Phil with just the right mix of fear, anger, sadness, and joy. An extremely difficult character to nail down - especially since he's quite ordinary in many ways. Should ANDY KARL win 'BEST ACTOR IN A MUSICAL' at the 2017 TONY'S this year? ABSOLUTELY. Don't get me wrong. His stiffest competition - the lovable BEN PLATT, is inspiring. His brilliant portrayal of the DEAR EVAN HANSEN character is sensational. It's different, it's quirky, it's someone who everybody has known at least once. BUT, PHIL CONNORS? He IS EVERYBODY. ANDY KARL (along with the awesome supporting cast - huge shout to ANDREW CALL and RAYMOND J. LEE, who seemingly made me laugh in hysterics for close to 10 whole minutes) communicated something to me that made me FEEL SOMETHING - I'm not even sure what it is, but it felt real. The way the story was told helped me better understand the world, myself and others. It restored my confidence in people - in humanity. The entire production managed to accomplish this without overdramatizing anything - or pushing a message. My 13 year old daughter and I left the theater like we were about to take on the world. Even though it was cloudy outside - I thought to myself - 'There will be sun....'. Pure bliss.

I saw the show in early previews and enjoyed it, now it's a classic. My interest in going back again was to see Andy Karl's standby Andrew Call in the lead role of Phil Connors. Not only was the show super fun but Andrews performance allowed everyone in the cast to shine. This is a musical for adults so I was surprised to see pre-teens in the audience. Maybe their parents didn't see the film to know how much the humor is gear towards adults. If you do get seats atleast in the 5th row to enjoy this enchanting stage production.

I've been to Broadway nearly 20 times over the last couple years, and this is probably my favorite show to come out since Wicked. The title (and perhaps the memory of the movie) seem to imply that it's going to be silly and frivolous, which unfortunately turned many thinking theater lovers away. While it is easily one of the funniest shows around, it has many layers of depth. In fact, for those of us who like to analyze and appreciate depth, it goes much deeper than the vast majority of shows. It's such a shame that truly great art is often ignored by the masses; this show should have run for years. Fortunately, I was able to see it three times before it closed.

We took some out of town guests to this Broadway show based on the reviews and were very surprised at the high quality of the performers, music and the story. Very good show. Well worth the effort to see it.

I won the lottery for this show, which I had entered on a whim. I knew absolutely nothing going into this show, and honestly, I had very little interest in going out of my way to see it. But I had won, and I was free so I went, and I am SO glad I did. This show took me by surprise, everything about it was great. It was funny, it was cute, and the music was super fun, but beyond the surface level things I look for in shows, Groundhog Day had deeper messages, and left me feeling things I never expected to feel. The story is the same as the movie, but with the addition of the music, the deeper, more emotional messages are drawn out, and beautifully portrayed by stellar performances from the entire cast. The staging of this production was incredible as well. The set was beautiful, and some scenes were executed in such creative ways I was shocked. I cannot give this show enough praise, and I am so happy I ended up seeing it.

Groundhog day was an enjoyable show. It was funny and the music was good, with some varying styles of music. The play was funny and was pretty consistent with the original movie. I would recommend it.

I have seen the movie many times but the stage production was so cleverly done as to re-create scenes much more difficult while at the same time not repetitious and boring!!

This was my 8th time seeing this show because I simply can't get enough of it. Every time I see something I didn't see before and it gets me on a deeper level. The acting is phenomenal, the score runs through my head 24/7 and the sets and choreography are second to none. This show deserves much more love than it has gotten and I love introducing people to it.

This was a great musical for adults. Had some sexual innuendos not appropriate for kids.

It was a fun evening out. It was a great entertaining show. We sat in the Orchestra section, approximately 10 rows from the back. I at first thought some of the things they did in miniature were silly, but later on I learned why they had done so and laughed my hardest.

The production and the actors did a wonderful job of showing characters developing while time was standing still. Extremely creative use of relatively simple stage props to portray the town and the B&B bedroom. I appreciated how the various characters gave the same lines repeatedly, but with changes that kept them fresh. The song lyrics were integral to propelling the action and well crafted. I might wish for a tune that I wanted to hum on the way home. The lead actors were delightfully energetic and the secondary characters were memorable, particularly the guys in the bar, and Nancy.

not seeing the original movie, the play was hard to watch. Andy Karl did an incredible job in the strange role he had.

The show was filled with funny quirks and joked, but most of the jokes contain sexual references not suitable for younger kids

Loved the set and clever effects.. Hated the gratuitous, crude dialogue, etc. The theater was filled with young children who seemed to be on school or camp outings. Totally inappropriate. It was bitter-cold inside as well. We left at intermission - never have done that before.

What a great show! Decently true to the movie, the plot goes deeper into the life of Phil Connors. The humor is a little cruder than the movie, so beware of bringing kids! Andy Karl is amazing, the sets blew our minds away, and of course, the rest of the cast is great as well. Would highly recommend this show!

Everyone I know that has seen this show has loved it and been in awe. Not sure why sales are low - if you're on the fence about going, GO. It's affordable and the best show i've ever seen. Don't hesitate.

We loved the movie. We loved the play and music from Mathilda. This seemed liked an obvious choice. We were right.

Much better than I expected. The whole audience laughed out loud many times throughout the show. Some of the singing was excellent also. The lead, Andy Karl was outstanding. To my surprise, this was one of the most enjoyable Broadway shows I have seen, including many that won Tony's for best play or best musical.

Couldn't figure out how they were going to pull this off -but WOW! Completely incredible. Some cursing and one inappropriate scene (implied sex scene, clothes were on). My under 13 year old was very uncomfortable with those parts... But I have to say, I'd still bring him again. It was AWESOME!!!

Three of us, aged 19 - 70, went to see Groundhog Day on Saturday night. Each of us totally enjoyed the play. The actors were great, music was great and dancing was great! I think they could have shortened the play by eliminating Nancy's solo singing part. Though she was good, the number really did not add anything to the play. Andy Karl was terrific and very nice on the eyes!

We won tickets to this show through the lottery so we weren't exactly sure what to expect. But we absolutely loved it! The set was amazing, the cast was phenomenal, the music was great. I have no complaints! We would definitely see it again. I just have one question.....how did Phil keep disappearing and reappearing? It was magic!
