One of the best concerts I've seen lately. Her band blew me away. I loved the horns and enjoyed seeing her play the sax.

Hearing this album performed live makes a big difference in gaining a better appreciation for it. Unfortunately this is an extremely limited run for P. J. Harvey but if you can make it out to any remaining shows this year do it!

The recent PJ Havey & John Parish show was amazing. I actually don't love listening to their album on my iPod, but hearing it live was absolutely incredible. She is such a tremendous performer and watching her dance around in bare feet and completely killing it was great. The Beacon was also set up really well - it was easy to get a drink and you could see and hear everywhere. The audience was also respectful and didn't talk through the whole show like I've been experiencing recently.

PJ Harvey is still an amazing singer/songwriter; however she only played her new material. And her sound has changed soo much, that someone like me, that waited 17 years to hear her sing live was sad. I had hoped to hear a mix of her music. If you are a fan of her most current album, you will like it. If you have been a fan of her work for years, stay home and listen to the cd.

First of all, this review is for PJ Harvey AND John Parish - it was their tour together - definitely not the same as a solo PJ Harvey tour. I've been a fan of Polly since Man-Size hit MTV's 120 Minutes in the early 90s, and I've loved every album since...but somehow I missed the John Parish collaboration, Dance Hall at Louse Point. So, it was a beautiful surprise when A Man a Woman Walked By was released earlier in 2009, and I also discovered their first work together. On to the show - the set consisted ONLY of songs from the two albums Polly and John performed together, which was only disappointing until they got started. The musical skill of the band, and John Parish and the percussionist in particular, was spectacular and only slightly overshadowed by Polly's voice. Her performance on each and every song made me forget that there would be no Down by the Water, no Man-Size, no Good Fortune, no Life and Death of Mr. Bad Mouth. My new and basic familiarity with the Parish collaborations became suddenly intimate, immediately special during this show. And as much as I love those songs now, each listen is a little disappointing because the studio tracks are so insubstantial by comparison to what I heard and saw that night. I will never forget it.

The PJ Harvey, John Parrish show at the Madison Theater in Covington, Kentucky was great. I ve been waiting for a long time to catch PJ at a small venue and this was the perfect place. Most of the tunes were off of the two collaborations between PJ and John. I would have loved to have heard some of PJ s solos stuff, or had her pick up a guitar and play some acoustic Rid of Me era tunes, but beggars can t be choosers and it was just fantastic that they came to the Madison. The crowd seemed very much into them.

I first heard PJ at a friends house - specifically a video with Nick Cave. I thought she was some kind of folk singer. Then I saw her live at Madison Theatre in Covington. PJ Harvey does Rock n Roll.

Does it get any better than Polly Jean Harvey? I don't think so. Her show in Atlanta with John Parish was nothing short of amazing! PJ jumped from character to character in a theatrical rendention of many of the songs that appear on 'A Woman A Man Walked By' and 'Dance Hall at Louse Point'. Pure avant garde bliss! Rumor has it Polly Jean has written most (if not all) of her new album. Don't miss it!

So why only one star? The first time I saw her many years ago, she gave one of the best performances I ve seen, and I ve been at many concerts. After seeing her nine times, it s like something fade out, I asked friends and other fans, they said the same. If you want to see a complete different artist from Rid of me, Is This Desire, To bring you my love , Dry , Uh Huh Her , Stories From the City Stories From the Sea, go to see her. I ve been patient but the last times I saw her it was brutal, she looked absent on the stage, I left totally disappointed, at least in 2009 played \u2018black hearted love which was the best song of that tour. Don t expect to listen to Dress, or any song with high energy these days. Next time instead of standing for five hours I prefer to stay and watch her when she had passion in her DVD Please leave quietly . Let England Shake. . .

Been following Polly Jean from the beginning - Have seen her 5 times now! Each cd and show is a new incarnation. For the White Chalk tour she was bedecked in a Victorian gown with writing all over it - the music was sparse and haunting. For the sold out Terminal 5 show she sported a black feathered headdress and was backed by 4 close mates who look like people you'd enjoying hanging out with in a pub. Awesome musicianship, with Harvey switching from harp to electric to acoustic. Beautiful piano accompaniment! Sent shivers through me. Such a lovely and amazing woman - can completely rock out and then switch over to an isolated sound. Great crowd!

I love PJ Harvey. Having listened to her recent albums, I knew that there was a chance her performance might not rock...and it didn't. The couple of older songs she did, like Teclo, were somewhat low-key and limp. I respect that she's in a different place as an artist than when she was younger. Still, I found myself a little bored, looking around at the crowd. My personal rule of thumb - if I'm going to be standing at a concert, it better rock. This did not. If you don't mind that, this show is for you. Otherwise, look elsewhere for a rousing performance. Finally, PJ's collaborations w/John Parrish are plain boring. I wish that would just stop. How can it, when he's in the band? Also, Mick Harvey from The Bad Seeds is in the band, but sounds neutered by the slow tunes he has to play. As always, Terminal 5 has bad sound, but PJ because of her mellower tunes, came off better than most.

First show was announced, the 20th, but I was like 40$? I cant pay that amount for any one. I saw her like ten years ago. But the album is so great, the anti-war message so aorthy of support, and then they announced another show that I got a ticket. It is PJ Harvey, what else to say? Commanding presence, amazing musicians. They did an encore, but wish people gave even more love! I clapped and yelled non stop, only time I yelled as I like to listen when I pay to go to a concert. They did not do the entire album straight, and she shared some nyc and personal emotional songs, which balanced her macro topics of the mayhem and pain of war and the resilience of human kind and nature.

I have loved PJ's studio recordings since the 80's. She possesses a poet's point of view that has resulted in some some stellar songs that are deeply moving whether they are restrained or raging. But none of what I love about her and her body of work was evident at Terminal 5. Encased from neck to toe in a white habit-like dress and a bizarre 'hair hat' she stood statue on a stage bathed only in stark white light. She was accompanied by a back up band of 3 men who did and played nothing worthy of a mention. PJ has always been a bit of a minimal purist, usually only incorporating guitar, drum and the occasional keyboard, although for most of the evening she strummed an autoharp , which made me think of appalachian folk music. While her raw, intimate brand of music works played in my bedroom at 2 in the morning, it just doesn't deliver in a concert hall. The audience seemed as though they were politely clapping at the end of each song. The most energetic moment for me at this concert was when a drunk guy threw a beer on a woman. Why this happened I don't know, but it was the only exciting moment for me that evening. PJ only said a few words to the audience all night, as far as I know. I left before the first encore was over. Maybe she played 50ft Queenie, Dress and Naked Cousin after I left and the joke was on me for not having faith in Ms Harvey. I doubt it. If I pay for a ticket and leave my house to see a performer, I want to be entertained, I don't need a demonstration of stark, minimal purity. Would a laser or a fog machine contaminate the poet's pure emotion? Bored with the music, I started checking out the crowd, because I was then interested in who a PJ Harvey fan is these days. Mostly dowdy women with little fashion sense and sensitive men with dread locks or wool caps. Pretentious, no?

You should get to this venue early and get a good spot. It's pretty big, so if you show up late you may end up very far away. We had a great spot right in front of Polly. She was spell-binding. A true artist. She played the whole new album and a few old songs (mostly from Is this desire?). Great band, too, especially nice to see Mick Harvey.

OverallNavalSuperiority
I've seen PJ Harvey probably a dozen times over the years. She's one of a handful of artists I will go see whenever and wherever possible. It's generally an occasion I look forward to for months. This time was different. In the last seven years she's produced one great record (White Chalk was brilliant (and her show at the Beacon in support was unbelievably good), one OK record (Uh Huh Her) and one pretty mixed record (with John Parrish, A Man A Woman Walked By). Then Let England Shake. The early reports were a little alarming. An autoharp driven record? That lyrically was about deformed children and rivers of blood? Then the record itself arrived and frankly, it was a little strange. But that didn't necessarily mean disappointing. White Chalk (and hell, Rid of Me) took a little getting used to as well. I listened to the record 4 or 5 times. Set it aside. So it was with some trepidation that I went to Terminal 5, with one other longtime PJ fan and two relative newcomers. We were all totally blown away. The new songs (and about half the set was from Let England Shake) were a revelation live. The autoharp that had sounded thin filled out and the lyrics that had seemed so pointedly political came to life at the show. PJ mixed in a pretty good handful of classics, Big Exit, C'Mon Billy, Angelene, among others, that were all crowd favorites. No Dress or Rid of Me. Can't finish with mentioning PJ's hat, which was either a pair of disembodied black swan wings or an incredible copy of same. They moved with her and seem ready to fly away at certain points. Great theater.

If you go to see PJ hoping to see her rockin' out in a miniskirt and playing her older hits, you're going to be disappointed. But if you like the new album and the softer sound she's developed over the last few albums, you are more likely enjoy her vulnerable and theatrical performance.

PJ always puts on a good show, so the experience was not bad through any fault of hers. i couldn't see, the sound was tinny, the place was packed, and it sounded better down the hallway toward the bathroom than in the main area. terminal 5 is one of the worst venues i've ever been to and anyone who cares about sound and a good audience experience should boycott it.

LOVE PJ......couldn't wait to see/hear this show....got in at 7:30 on wed nite, crowded already...moved around to find better location, all the way up to third level, but if not by the railing on any level, you don't see anything.....back down to floor level, by that time jammed packed, cannot move thru crowd easily......no sight of stage, only pj's head and her lovely black feathered headpiece, but soon this was impossible to see either.........also thought sound was mediocre........after 30 min., i reluctantly left..........not happy! i think terminal 5 was "over sold" not just sold out........it sucks.

PJ performs an engaging set list for this tour, the majority of the songs were from the Let England Shake album. Angelene, The Devil, Down by the Water and Big Exit were great additions from other albums. She stands solely on the left side of the stage in a white dress with a feathered head dress while the band takes center stage. She flawlessly switches from the auto harp and electric & acoustic guitars. She has a captivating presence and a beautiful voice. A shy and fervent performer; the only interaction she had with the crowd was when she introduced her band mates. She plays the songs as recorded on their respective albums with no variations or added interpretations. A memorable performance that I would highly recommend to new and old fans of her work.

I hadn't heard the new album until the show, and I guess I don't care for it much. And most of the old songs she sang were not my favorites either. It was a more melancholic vibe, and I was in the mood for rocking out! Besides that, I didn't care for how short each song was...it seemed like they were all exactly the same length, which made me feel that PJ was just on auto pilot. She also didn't connect with the audience...never said hi or talked to us (except to say thanks at the end). And I wasn't impressed with the band's performance...as a whole PJ and the band didn't seem to be "tight"... I still love PJ...but I'll just stay home listening to the songs I like in the future! Still love the Warfield! The acoustics are great. Price to drink is highway robbery though!!!

I just don't know -- I love PJ, but this last album took forbearance. I was hoping, hoping that she wouldn't do a lot from it. The little-choir-girl soprano is not her best register. It's thin. This felt like a contractual obligation concert. The songs not from the new album were cut short with not a lot of passion. All in all, it was one of the most boring concerts. My SO at the end said, "I know you love her, but next time, you're going to have to go without me."

No opening band for this somewhat brief (90 minutes or so) show, but at least we all got home early. Focused largely on the most recent two albums - that was disappointing to some of my friends, but I thought the show was thematic and brilliant. Quite similar to the show last August at the Shrine in LA, but the first encore of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" sent it into the stratosphere. Great vibe; great band; recommended.

Saw PJ Harvey last summer at the Shrine in LA. That show was good, but I had issues with the sound system and acoustics. Its not really a venue for concerts. I got another ticket for Riverside a week before for 20 dollars on a LiveNation sale. I figured Riverside would be a bettter deal since the Greek Theatre in LA would be Nosebleed seats for the same price. So I left early for the show, and parked. Killed some time in downtown riverside and went to the show. Line was quick- but since the venue moved down the street last minute, the Live Nation ticket app didnt show the bar code. (dont trust it, get a ticket at the box office with your name) Luckily the security let me back in front after getting a real ticket. The seats were about 30 or so feet from the stage. I wasnt going to pay 70 extra to get hit by the band's sweat. The acoustics were very good and the sound system was very clear. PJ played mostly her new songs and the rest from Let England Shake with a few good oldies. This was a great show, and upon second viewing I have more appreciation for the concept PJ was trying to do live. The large band has a rich sound, and she lets them have their highlights in the show.John Parish wasnt there, but his fill-in did a good job. "To Bring You My Love" from the same named album, had a added layer of sonic texture with the new band. The song had more depth than the original version. I would say if you never saw PJ and have wanted to, you should. Shes touring back in July for a few dates east. I will say PJ Harvery NOW is not quite the same performer from like 1998-2004. Its like comparing a well-crafted-refined artistic show vs/ an unforgettable force of nature. I miss what PJ used to bring, but I apprecriate her growth and change.. Do note she does show some of that power in her older songs toward the end of the show.

Excellent performance, but mostly newer music. A few throwbacks from old 90's PJ. I've seen this set twice and it was the same both times. Very heavy on Hope Six and Let England Shake with a few oldies. The band is incredible and its what I'd consider more of a performance than a show.

The set started 20 mins after the doors opened (no opener). They went right into it. Mostly played songs from The Hope 6 Demolition Project and Let England Shake with a few songs from To Bring You My Love and a song or two from White Chalk (The Devil/To Talk To You), Is this Desire? (The River) & Rid of Me (50ft Queenie). Would've loved a few tracks of Stories from the... album but I am VERY happy with the setlist. Definitely a set for fans and she did not disappoint. The band was sharp as hell. Her voice just hits me in the feels and was a lyrical Joan of Arc. Costume was beautiful. Just an amazing performance!!! RECOMMEND!!! My fair weather fan friend loved the show. Favorite Moment: Drunk gal kept shouting "PLAY OLD SCHOOL...OLD SCHOOL" over and over before the encore. As PJ came onto the stage to perform what would be "Medicinals". She leaned into the mike and sang "OOOOOLD", immediately clasped her hands over her mouth realizing the power of suggestion from the drunk and in the shocking gesture, knocked the microphone windscreen clean off the mike, absolutely embarrassed. The crowd, the band and PJ got a great laugh out of it.

I've seen PJ Harvey a few times, I've been to the HOB quite a few times. But never on a Monday night on the day of the Boston Marathon! Was that the problem? I don't know. What an absolutely talented group of musicians. Veterans including Alain Johanaiss and John Parrish among many others. And of course PJ out front, commanding the stage as the talented artist and show-woman she is. They all sounded great as they played the whole new album (out of sequence) with a few from Let England Shake and To Bring You My Love most notably mixed in. A few others too including 50 Foot Queenie and Down by the Water were played too. 50Ft Queenie was a major rager live! Great great show! Would jump at the chance to see her again live!!

Best live performance I have ever seen, and I have seen some good ones. You don't realize her amazing vocal skills until you hear songs from different albums, hence different styles, sequentially and in immediate contrast. Her material is as good as any in contemporary music and better than practically anything else. Her band and the presentation was incredible. And, she demands your total attention. The things she does, if you try to describe them, might sound silly, but they are art of the highest form. Like someone from the fairy realm visiting Earth. I flew from Nashville to see this, sleeping overnight in the airport and in spots on planes and sidewalk, and would do it again in a moment. Seeing her live again has become my #1 concert priority. The venue sucked, BUT I would go again for her. And, MOST of her hard-core fans are phenomenal.

The PJ Harvey show at Terminal 5 was a great experience. She played some very emotional new music, with a few older classics mixed in. Yea it would have been fun to hear some of the old rockers, but I understand that musicians as do normal people move on. The venue is a nice place with fine acoustics. Too bad there isn't a full US tour.

PJ Harvey was awesome! Terminal 5 is a great place to see a show. My friend and I drove up from Philly, and it was well worth the trip!

She is continually developing as an artist. What a combination of power, artistry and humility. A true innovator. I have always been a fan and will follow her down any path. As long as I keep an open mind and remain wiiling to grow along side her.

I have admired PJ Harvey as an artist since the early 90s. However, this event at Terminal 5 was truly awful. First of all, the space is totally inappropriate for PJ Harvey's current aesthetics, which beckon for an intimate setting. I should have known better as I am quite aware that Terminal 5 has horrible acoustics and is much better suited to a rave or DJ set, but I thought PJ Harvey's performance might have made me forget about the terrible venue. As for the show itself, it was totally uninspired and had an amateurish vibe to it. So disappointing, I will never go to Terminal 5 again. And I will only purchase tickets to see PJ Harvey when she takes off her weird country frock and feather headdress and starts to make good music again.

it was the wrong venue for that show. to make people wait 2 1/2 hours with no opening act or even music from the club. the new cd is good but it is not strong enough(in my opinion) to play almost every song off of it live. i was really hoping to hear some of the rocking stuff from the earlier days mixed in there. i think that might have kept the concert alive. my eyes were going shut and i left before it was over.(which something i NEVER do) and i was not the only one filing out of the venue. this show deserves a sit down venue and a prompt on stage presentation. p j , i love your work but this one was not for me :(

PJ Harvey in stunning wedding-dress/Victorian dress hybrid with Bjorkish hairpiece plays atmospheric gig at Terminal 5, featuring John Parish (co-conspirator of two PJ Harvey albums) and Mick Harvey (from Nick Cave's Bad Seeds). Her extensive catalogue allowed her to fill the entire setlist without going back any earlier than "To bring you my love." This performance reflected the confidence and poise born of a long and storied career in which PJ Harvey has overcome artistic changes of direction, droughts, personal wildernesses. The sonic imprint of the performance lingers in the mind and memory. I've seen PJ many times in Dublin and New York, and it's an evolving story I'm glad to be able to witness.

I don't know what it was on PJ's head, but her mind and voice were pushing out the most beckoning siren songs that I've experienced at a concert. Usually when artists play new material instead of familiar it is less well received but the new album is very accessible and she played most of the songs from it. Her alternating use of autoharp and guitar and the arrangements fit together very well. The band was very much in synch. The crowd was enjoying the show but not really moving much to the rhythm, that I could tell. Overall the show was not to be missed.

I've never been to transfixed by an artist as I was the other night at Terminal 5. Despite this venue being the worst possible place to see any artist of substance, she was original, refreshing and beautiful to watch. Her band was spot on . It was interesting to see such a unique performance artist with a back up band of "average" looking professional middle aged men, do such a great job of making her music come alive and sound as fresh as any new artist out there now. NEVER judge a book by it's cover (or its age) !!

Too self-indulgent. To play only your new album for 7/8 of the show is problematic. In a venue that is standing-room- only, to play mellow music is not proper. You need to be high-energy in that space. The crowd was disappointed.

She sang fantastic. Her voice really sounded amazing. She played just about the entire new album 'Let England Shake', thus the show reflected the mood. If your expecting the rocking PJ you will be disappointed. There was no hard rocking at all. But the band played great and Mick Harvey sang great with her. It was a laid back vibe. My only disappointment was that it could've been a longer set.

Only PJ Harvey could pull off this: A second sold out show at NYC s Terminal 5, playing with no opener, appearing two hours after doors to a growingly impatient crowd, only to woo the monster audience with a stripped down show of largely new material. Many would have loved to hear Polly Jean Harvey break out with her raw, bluesy, hard-rockin , early 90 s material like the albums Dry, Rid Of Me, and To Bring You My Love that burst her onto to scene as one of the most unique female musicians of her generation. Sure, that could have happened, since this is the first time she s played with a full band in tour mode in many years, but she once again blew all expectations and formed a whole new sound. The new band was actually some long-time collaborators, Bad Seeds keyboardist and guitarist Mick Harvey and John Parish (who she had last done an album and tour with) and drummer Jean-Marc Butty, all dressed in dapper clothing and supplying a sublime yet restrained ragtime feel. PJ Harvey herself strode out in a beautiful alien white wedding dress and bizarre black feather headdress with her standardly shy but extremely direct approach. The sound was somewhere between all of her albums over the last 10 years, from the slick production of Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea to the dark raw emotions of Uh Huh Her and the total strip down sadness of White Chalk (especially as she still loves beyond all instruments, her autoharp, which was so prevalent on that last album). She started with her entire new somber album, an ode to her homeland of England, Let England Shake, which really grew on me hearing it live, as parts would pull on the heartstrings of even the most cynical. The title track Let England Shake opened with total vocal brilliance, the catchy almost cheerful and morbid track The Words That Maketh Murder followed, and the heart-string pulling of In The Dark Places and The Last Living Rose all made me melt. The new stuff was only broken up a couple times by the The Devil from her last largely acapella album (which sounded even better with a full band) and the great early sensual hit C mon Billy . As an encore, she burst back on with a track from her ode to NYC Stories from the City album Big Exit , the tender Angelene and the gorgeous ballad Silence as the solemn finale. Dry eyes were surely hard to find on this night\u2026

The best concert I've been to so far this year. Going there made me regret not having gone to see her previously. She was simply amazing, so was her band consisting of John Parish, Mick Harvey and Jean-Marc Butty. The only thing that I am sure no one there enjoyed is that the space was packed and, according to one of the security guards, exceeded the capacity by 2000 people, which just made it impossible for people like me( 5'2) to see anything. I would definitely get there much earlier next time.

I had been hoping to see PJ for years, and never got my chance until Tuesday. She came out with a long flowing white dress, and what looked like a crow's wings on her hat (I hope it wasn't a real crow). She looked stunning, and belted out her tunes in such perfection. She played her new album in its entirety, but also included a few of her old hits, including Cmon Billy and Down by the Water.

having seen what was a really lovely event with Ms Harvey at terminal 5 for the first of her 2 NYC shows, i was REALLY amazed that the crowd hung around for 30 minutes...... desperately waiting for a second encore which sadly never came. They..... we deserved it. It was a major letdown on a lovely night.

This show was short, boring, inconsiderate. PJ and band have become gummers. Could not even give a hearty hello. They played almost the entire new album. The new album is not very rocking at all, so it is hard to sit around for an artist to start 50 minutes late and then play slow, thoughtful songs. Her set was only an hour and 5 minutes long, followed by a short encore. she played maybe 5 or 6 songs from past albums. The crowd went crazy for those older pieces, leading me to wonder, "PJ, are you getting this?" The show felt like it was a chance for her to push her new vision, not for fans to enjoy her--well, this fan. This woman rocks so hard, at least in the past, and it was tough to sit there watching this show. I have listened to the new album a lot, but still could not get into a full show of it that much. I like the album, but it is fine to hear it at home. I was not alone, the crowd looked totally unexcited, and the overall energy from the show was an emphatic "MEH". Shit, even the people on the floor in front of her were falling asleep. One more time: PJ Harvey is one of my favorite artists of all time. I have been to 2 concerts of hers which are in the top musical experiences I have ever had. But this show was not it. It does not hurt to play crowd favorites, even when you are a hard core artiste!

I have been a PJ Harvey fan for 15+ years. Her previous albums are amazing and really get to me in a (positive) emotional way. I have seen her play before and walked away from the shows feeling like I got more than expected. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for this show. Don't get me wrong, her voice was amazing but she pretty much played her entire new album and only 5 songs of her older material. The new album is less like the PJ Harvey I have loved for many years. She didn't interact with the audience at all and it was boring. Even the older songs felt like they were lacking her usual raw energy. I felt ripped off. Regardless, I am still glad I saw the show, but overall was disappointed.
