Squeeze

SQUEEZE IN CONCERT:British new wave icons Squeeze thrilled fans in 2015 with Cradle to the Grave, their first album of new material in nearly two decades and a triumphant rallying cry that drew them back out on the road. Core songwriters Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook were compared to Lennon and McCartney during their '80s heyday, and their catchy, inventive songwriting remains just as compelling three decades later. As performers Squeeze hasn't missed a beat – their 2016 Glastonbury performance saw them in peak form, playing hits like "Up the Junction" and "Take Me, I'm Yours" with the same mix of power pop emotion and new wave cool that made them stars. Tilbrook sounds like a million bucks, and Difford's razor-sharp knack for melody should be required listening for younger bands.

Tillbrook and Difford did not disappoint. The band was tight and sounded great. They played a large portion of the new C/D which just dropped in October. Although I was not familiar with the new songs they were solid and played well live. IF your a fan, and I am, there was nothing to fault and a lot to like with the performance. Great show, highly recommended.

As soon as the lights went down I felt a rush I haven't felt in a long time. Plenty of songs from there new album the knowledge which sounds better every time I listen to it. The place really got rockin when they played my all time favorite song "Cool for Cats". They are so inventive. The version of "Take me I'm yours" has to be seen. They all lined up in a row. Go to you tube to witness this it's there. I can't get enough of them. I hadn't seen them in 35 years. I hope they come back soon or maybe I'll add going to england to my bucket list.

I would definitely recommend this show to anyone! Cheap Trick and Squeeze both put on excellent shows. Both great artists, although quite different, bring back great memories for those that were fans in the 70's and 80's. They both still have it after all these years and in my eyes, most current bands just do not hold a candle to the talent and musicianship of some of these older bands. I'm very glad I got to attend!

Saw Cheap Trick at Blossom last summer but this smaller setting at HOB was much better, in fact, awesome for them! Showmanship, guitars, voices++++wow! Was a huge Squeeze fan from the old days...energy was a little off last night (not as bad as a Cars concert). Vocals were great but I think they need to adjust their base and drum volumes (specifically lower them...a lot)!

Cheap Trick was ok...needed to play more popular songs. They mostly played songs from their new album, only about 4 of their old, classic ones. Squeeze on the other hand was absolutely incredible! Not only did they play their popular songs, but their sound was amazing! They made the show!

Squeeze = a very professional, talented, fun band! They played non-stop, one song into the next. All 12 songs off the Squeeze "Singles" album were performed. Love the vocal blend of Difford/Tillbrook: the Squeeze signature sound! The back-up band was energetic, very tight. Top 3 moments: "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)" "Hourglass" & "Annie Get Your Gun." My only complaint was the up tempo quarter note pulse played throughout the entire song on "Black Coffee in Bed"...changed the vibe/feel completely. Love Tillbrook's voice & his guitar playing is top-notch!

I love Squeeze and their playing and voices were all I could ask. However, the concert was not good, and that's simply because the sound was awful. I don't know if it was the bands road crew, or the sound staff at the Beacon, but the sound was so bad in the lower balcony people were complaining. The bass was WAY too loud and not clean. The bass drum the same. Vocals, keys, and especially Tilbrook's guitar, were way too low. The mix was just awful. I saw the Band earlier this year in New Jersey, and they were brilliant. However, the sound just killed it for anybody in the balcony.

I love Squeeze and their music did not disappoint. Glenn's voice and guitar were stellar and all the band displayed musical chops. The set list included everything on the Singles album, new material (which was good), and a few other cuts. I would have preferred more deep cuts (the only one was Simple and Cruel), but understand that many fans want to hear the hits. Maybe ditch the opening act (he was fine, but I was there for Squeeze) to make more room. There is a huge "But" to the positivity: the insanely loud sound. Even the opening guy-and-guitar were too loud, though tolerable. However, when Squeeze took the stage the volume went up even more. Ouch! I came prepared with earplugs, and in they went. That did help. I can't fathom why anyone likes such blasting sound, unless they're already half-deaf from previous loud concerts.

Squeeze didn t disappoint \u2014 Difford and Tillbrook (along with some younger musicians) still can sing like its 1981. They played the classics mixed with some of their newer songs. The audience loved the older tunes and the encore of Black Coffee in Bed was outstanding.

What a fabulous show! Glenn Tillbrook's voice is as good as it was when Squeeze first came on the scene. He and Chris Difford (the two remaining original members of the group) played and sang beautifully and with joy. The other band members are incredibly talented musicians. They played a great mix of new songs (which were great) and their old hits (which are still so much fun to hear.) If you were a Squeeze fan in the 1980s, you won't be disappointed with this show!

They were great. Their playing was excellent, vocals were good and they don't waste time with chatter between songs. We enjoyed hearing all the hits as well as some of their new music and their background video screens were interesting. My only and biggest complaint was the sheer ear hemorrhaging volume of the show. We saw them in the Carolina Theater in Durham, a relatively small venue in terms of square footage. The volume went to eleven- loud to the point of distortion with a couple of episodes of feedback from the PA system. I spent a great deal of my time with my fingers in my ears and only then could I differentiate between instruments and vocals in the general roar coming from the speakers. If you are going to see Squeeze, definitely bring a good pair of ear plugs. We left after they played Tempted, which was probably near the end anyway. My ears continued to ring throughout the next day. I do understand that a rock band is going to be loud, but this was way over the top.

Squeeze is one of my favorite bands of all time and I was very much looking forward to this show. The opening act was solo acoustic and was very good. When Squeeze took the stage, the sound system was cranked so high it almost made my ears bleed. This is the kind of setup you would expect for a heavy metal band in a stadium, not a supposedly more intimate theater like the Carolina. Throw in a non stop smoke machine, three video screens and a light show which included blinding white light shot into the eyes of the audience, and this is a painful experience. We had to leave after about 5 songs, extremely disappointed. Did anyone do a sound check before the show???? Squeeze is known for excellent song writing on par with the best ever in rock and pop music- sometimes clever and subtle, sometimes gut wrenching and all out rockin . Glenn Tillbrook is an unbelievably great guitarist and could probably hold his own just on his instrument in any other pop/rock band there ever was or is. You will miss all of that at this show. If you want to save some money, put your favorite Squeeze songs on the most powerful sound system you own, turn it up to eleven and sit with your ears no more than an inch from the speakers, then occasionly shine a flashlight directly into your eyes. Continue for an hour and a half, and you will have the experience of this show without an empty wallet.

The at odds couple show with just Chris and Glenn was absolutely amazing. They played a bunch of old his, deep tracks, new tracks, chatted with the audience, and overall had a great time on stage and it came across to the audience wonderfully. Their voices are amazing, the guitar playing wonderful, and Glenn's diversions to keyboard and ukulele were fantastic as well. They sold recordings of the show at their merchandise table and it was the actual show from that night. The discs sound awesome. And for those going to the show, they do a free meet and greet after the show, so stick around.

I've loved Squeeze for 20 years, but haven't ever been able to see them live, so I was super psyched to finally make it to one of their shows. They didn't disappoint! They played two sets of about an hour a piece, plus an encore, with a mix of old faves and stuff from their new album. They both sounded great and handled the Q&A parts of the show with loads of humor and appreciation. They recorded the show, which you were able to buy at the end, which was cool. Glenn and Chris also hung around afterwards to give a quick autograph and say hi. I loved the acoustic vibe, which made me even more excited to see the full band sometime down the road. Definitely worth my 3 hour drive...if you're a Sqeeze fan and they head to your area, it's a definite must-see.

I completely enjoyed both performances but Cheap Trick was definitely a hard act to follow. The manic energy of Rick Nielson brought the crowd to a nice energetic buzz and that led to some of the crowd being so amped up that they couldn't quiet down so that I could enjoy the broader dynamic and the quieter passages of some of Squeeze's songs. Having seen Cheap Trick several times spanning 28 years (my first time was with UFO right here at Radio City) this may have been their best performance overall. The first time it seemed that they played for us, which ordinarily is a great thing, but last night they played for themselves because they still seem to enjoy it after all these years...and that leads to a different type of performance. Rick's bow tie and ball cap have reappeared and Robin's voice hasn't lost anything after all these years. While I enjoyed it that they pulled out a song from the first record ("Ballad of TV Violence") I have always thought that the song gets bogged down by '70s excess and indulgence by its middle third; a better song from the same album would have been "He's a Whore", or maybe "Hot Love". A special treat for me was to experience "Baby Loves to Rock" again in the same venue that I first heard it on that night in 1982. I was an avid Squeeze fan for the first three records and gradually lost interest after the arrival of Paul Carrack (which is strange, because I like him), so all I really know from 1981 forward are the hits. It was obvious that Glenn was enjoying himself, and Chris seemed very proud to bring his songs on the road again and took great satisfaction from watching the fans eat it all up. If not for some boorish people in the audience who must not have realized they were at a concert and not a football game (it was difficult to hear some of the softer stuff over the shouting to each other and sidebar conversations and fist-bumping and high-fiving) I would have to say that every nuance that could have been wrung from the songs was, which is a testament to their musicianship, showmanship, and the production quality of the show overall. I was especially impressed by how hard they rocked on "Slap and Tickle", bringing a fervor that I never heard on the vinyl. Lastly, I can think of no better venue to see a show, this was a top-notch night in almost every single way.

jI've seen them before, but was so glad to see them at this point in my life when I truly appreciate the musicianship of the band. They sounded great and super tight! The venue was packed, and the only thing I was disappointed in was in Black Coffee in Bed was performed way too uptempo and fast! I guess they are sick of playing it the way it was written, but it sort of sounded like they just wanted to get it over with! Also, I choose to pay for a seat for the option to sit .. but not through the entire show - the crowd could use a coffee bar instead of alcohol - wake up people, it's a concert - get up and dance, at least for the encore!

Having last seen this band at Mayfest at the University at Albany in the early eighties, it was as if no time had gone by. The group sounded great, the sound guy was on the ball and the venue was packed. The band seemed to be having as much fun as the audience, smiling and joking while playing. Glen Tilbrook's voice was amazing and I forgot just how good a guitar player he was. I am going back to see them the next time they come around and will try to get my friends to come along as well.

I sent the following message to Squeeze management: I saw Squeeze in concert about 25 years ago at Rider College in New Jersey. They put on an amazing show and sounded spectacular. I had been telling my wife for many years of how good that show was. A few nights ago my wife and I saw them at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank N.J. We had gotten some great seats, center stage 5th row. We were both looking forward to a great show and were so very disappointed. I have no doubt that their musical talents haven't faded but whoever was running the sound was doing a terrible job. The drums and base drowned out everything and the vocals were so buried that they were barely audible. We left after the 4th song. As we walked to the door I took note of the sound, thinking maybe it was just where we were sitting. It wasn't. It sounded the same from the 5th row to the back door of the theater. My wife and I have seen several bands at the Count Basie Theater and they have sounded excellent, so I know it's not due to poor acoustics. I'm not telling you this to get my money back. I just want you to know that someone is not doing their job which is not fair to the very talented band.

I Think Squeeze probably did a great job. The only reason I say I think is the Kick Base Drum and the Bass Guitar low notes were awful. Too much drive, bad speakers, component failure or the guys running the sound board are deaf. Over all volume was good just couldn't Hear Glen Tilbrooks vocals or guitar riffs. Bass Sound Quality was the down fall for my experience. Don't know if this was an Count Basie Theater Equipment or Squeeze gear.

Just one more piece of evidence that Squeeze should be in the R&R Hall of Fame. Tired of all the excuses - they're simply great. STILL putting out great music 45 years after their first EP (the new album is great), STILL have a body of work that cannot be denied for its timelessness and excellence, and STILL sound great live. Glenn's voice sounds like it did in the 80s, the band was awesome. Absolute great time. Thanks, Squeeze, for a great show!

Great show! They sounded as good as they did in the 80s. Funny smart engaging. Their voices and musicianship have not skipped a beat. From their new stuff to the classics they rocked the Wilbur and didn't miss a beat. If I didn't love them I'd love them! They can pull mussels from shells just like they did 30 years ago. So glad I didn't miss it.

These gentlemen know how to put on a fantastic show. Great musicianship, warmth and it doesn't hurt that they have an endless supply of top notch songs.

Everything was perfect about this show. Format, set list, etc. I think all thousand people in the audience knew all the words and sang along a lot of the time. This concert let you connect with the band and your fellow fans.

This show was fabulous. The only complaint I have is that it just went by so fast!!! It was a totally engaging and fun experience, not to mention that Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford are sooooo talented. Glenn's guitar and keyboards, as well as his voice, were simply sublime, as always. Wish I could see them at every performance in the tour! The other thing that is so great is that the audience can buy a cd of that night's performance right after the show...and the sound is just fantastic. What a great memento of a terrific evening.

One of the most enjoyable concerts and evenings I've had. A must for fans of these two prolific artists! Scottish Rite Theatre in Collingswood was a previously undiscovered gem. Find a show to see there.

The Scottish Rite Auditorium provided a perfect venue to allow the audience to experience the synergy between Difford and Tilbrook's personalities and musical talents. They actually had 2 sessions of questions and answers with the audience. A very memorable show!

Amazing!! All the hits by the two with such a historic body of work. Some solo, done unreleased material, some comedy, questions from the audience-everything you could ask for. Great room, great sound and you could walk out and grab a CD of the show on your way out

I've been to many, many concerts through the years - including Live Aid. The Squeeze Acoustic show was among the best! The venue was amazing - made the event feel very personal. Glenn and Chris were extremely entertaining - funny, candid, talented and appreciative of their fans. I will definitely be purchasing tickets next time they're in town!

Great show. First time at this venue and I wonder if their booking agent tried the Keswick in Glenside how that would have faired. The guys sound great and did all of the hits you'd expect. One disappointment is nothing from Frank or Play albums. Not sure if that's contractual or choice but didn't take away from the performance. Bested my expectations

I believe it is hard to find better singer/ songwriters and musicians than Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford. Along with an expansive musical catalog, they posess great chemistry and wit together on stage. Just an unblievable intimate show.

I was not sure what to expect from a band I had not seen play for almost thirty years. I was so happy to see that the years were of no matter. They played each song as if it was their first time on stage. It was energetic and so much fun! I love the new songs they played as much as the old!! I will be following Squeeze much more closely to make sure I do t miss another show!! In addition, the House of Blues was a great venue and I will also be looking to see more shows there.

My wife and I had an absolute fantastic time at this show! The sound was GREAT, and not a bad seat in the house. If you ever have a chance to catch a band you like at The Grove in Anaheim - YOU MUST GO !!!! The guys voices were still as strong as ever, and they SHREDDED their guitars. I would go back and see them again in a heartbeat.

Small venue in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. There were no chairs, no seats, so everyone was dancing, moving to the music. That may have helped both bands' great connections with the audience. Glenn and Chris and the others (of Squeeze) were fluid and strong, the band sounded tight. They all looked like they were having a great time onstage. Each band member had a chance to be highlighted. The show was really long -- got my money's worth. After the show, the venue didn't just kick people out; it goes back to being a bar. After a break, the bands came out and they mingled with folks who were left hanging out in the bar. Very cool thing to do!!

Let me say up front I LOVE Squeeze, I'm not a casual 45's and Under fan. They sound terrific, Glenn's voice is as good as ever. They played all the familiar songs that everyone loves, plus three new songs, which was very exciting! New music from Squeeze is something to look forward to. I personally would love to hear a couple of "B-sides", but this takes away nothing from the show. The performances were excellent, my only wish is it could have been a longer set. Of course if it were up to me they would never stop playing:) Bottom line, FABULOUS- can't wait to see them again!

Great fun was had by all as the B's made us dance in our seats. They played all the required hits, Rock Lobster, Love Shack, etc. But they also did some Whammy, some B52 girls, and some Planet Claire. Then Sqeeze came out and continued the party. Hits came fast and furious, Tempted, Black Coffee in Bed, and Hourglass. They also brought out some chestnuts, like Annie Get your Gun, and Cool for Cats. What a show!

B-52's phoned it in......can't blame them.......the MOST boring crowd I have EVER seen at a rock concert. A bunch of courpses glued to their seats. NO PLACE TO DANCE OR MOVE. SQUEEZE ROCKED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would see it for them alone.....in a better venue.

Forgot just how many amazing songs Squeeze has. LOL! Felt like I was reliving my childhood into adulthood. Each song they sang brought up a very distinct memory. Black Coffee In Bed and Tempted had that easy going 80's feel that felt so familiar. Pulling Mussels and Another Nail In My Heart made me flashback to my good old college days. I was back in the club during Cool For Cats. Overall it was a very enjoyable evening and worth the price of admission :D

I went to the Squeeze show not expecting to hear a band from the 80's still sound great but hoping that the tunes from back in the day would still be good enough to bring me back to the day. Well, to my surprise the boys have not lost a thing. They sounded exactly as they did back in the 80's. Every song brought me back to my youth. It was really incredible that they sounded as if they were right off the CD. They played all their biggest hits from Pulling muscles from a shell to breakfast in bed. The English Beat opened the show and were absolutely awesome. I would say that anyone who grew up listening to these bands in the 80's should see these bands in concert you will be glad you did.

Wow, fantastic show. The last time I saw Squeeze was over 25 years ago and they've still got it. I think I enjoyed this show more than the last time I saw them (and I loved the last time I saw them). The band sounded great. Excellent mix between their old and new stuff. I don't know who was having a better time...the audience or the band. Everybody was really in to it. If you are fortunate enough, don't miss the chance to see them. You won't be disappointed.
