Marcus Miller

MARCUS MILLER IN CONCERT:Bass guitar legend Marcus Miller has lent his fast-fingered session skills to everyone from Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, but lately it's his solo work that's been bringing the heat. Taking the stage with an unparalleled group of jazz musicians, Miller holds down the groove for the duration of his marathon sets, soloing in turn with his bandmates at shows that often top two hours. Just to give you an idea of how committed these guys are, their encores often extend for up to 45 minutes — a perk fans can expect as the band hits the road for their 2014 tour.BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:Brooklyn-born Marcus Miller was raised by a musical family that included his church organist father and jazz pianist cousin.

I took my husband, a bass player, to this concert to continue his birthday celebration. The performance couldn't be more stellar. Marcus Miller is always at his best when he is live, interacting with the audience. I loved how he told the stories behind each of his songs; it gives the music more dimension. I can't wait until he comes back to town, we'll definitely go to see him again!

Marcus Miller's show was top flight from top to bottom. Im a musician myself and had the night off so I decided to take my son to see this performance. My son is a drummer and he was very excited to see this. We were fortunate enough to be allowed backstage to meet Marcus and took pics. He gave my son all kinds of advice and was ultra down to earth. The show was spectacular and every musician he had on that stage was incredible. The Howard Theatre was very nice. Food was great, sound was superb, service was just fine. The only complaint I have is that there are no restrooms on the main floor. Also they made an announcement saying "no flash photography" very clearly. I assumed that meant that you can take pictures but you can't use a flash. Well I think everyone assumed the same thing and immediately began taking photos. A well dressed gentlemen quickly went around to everyone telling us "no pictures" and he was bombarded with responses explaining the "no flash photography" announcement. He didn't care and was quite rude about it in my opinion.

cannot describe the outstanding performance of mm and his incredible band. his showmanship is one of being able to draw the audience into his music and make u feel as if he was in your living room just visiting with old friends. all the band members were also top notch musicians as expected. i was sorry the bass ? clarinet? didnt work for him but he was smoth enough to just go on bass and allow his sax man to take over for awhile.it worked great.

This Marcus Miller band and tour are a little different from what we are used to. He put this specific band of younger players to mentor for a specific project revisiting the Miles Davis album "Tutu". He then wrote music specifically for this band to record and perform. This is Marcus' latest release "Renaissance". All of these musicians are outstanding talents and shine on their own, but when placed together in a band led by veteran talent Marcus Miller they gel into one very cohesive unit. The music is outstanding and performed flawlessly. As for the location- it is one of the greatest venues to see a show like this. The Tralf is a small venue that holds only several hundred people. The sound is amazing and there is not a bad spot for viewing.

Marcus is without a doubt one of the best musicians in the entertainment field. His mastery of the bass is comparable to the late Wayman Tisdale. Mr. Miller make the bass talk in a rythm that the most boring of listeners would have to sit up and take heed. If you miss this concert you missed one of the best yet presented at the Tralf.

Marcus (and his entire band) was on fire from the start. Every song was amazing, every musician was hot, every solo was smokin'. It's so fun to watch musicianship of this caliber. This Concert was so Awarding to Miles Davis of whom I think was proud upon looking in from Heaven and seeing so many paying such a tribute and honor to him as a musician considering the fact that Miles mentored and left so many to carry on in his absence. We are from Colorado, so it was a very special opportunity for us to visit the Hollywood Bowl while we were in LA and see this fabulous show. I'm used to Redrocks Amphitheatre, and I have to tell you that I felt this venue was far superior to what I am used to. We were glad however, that we took the shuttle. The accoustics and sound system at the Bowl are fantastic. Every note was crystal clear, and audible beyond belief. It was as if we were sitting in a small club enjoying the performance. As for the show, the set up was done in the three main periods of Mile's career with a different band for each. Every one of these artists was right on. I didn't detect a missed note in the entire performance. They were all tight and on cue in the rich and complex tapestry that characterized his genius. This should only could have been better by being longer. Well done !!!

I'm a very big Marcus Miller follower and he continues to amaze me. His talents are unmatched. What I've admired about him over the past few years, is that he has brought younger talents into his camp. The previous album Renaissance was recorded with your musicians and they toured with Marcus to promote their talents and the album, and this year he has released another album which features your guys. But what I love about the new album is that it reaches back to his Roots and fast forwards to todays events.

Marcus and team truly put on an amazing show. The first set was new stuff, the second set old stuff. The latter ending with Blast. Then for an encore they performed Frankenstein. Both featured ridiculous solos by Marcus. He was obviously having a great time. He told us a few times how much he loved seeing the crowd get into it and that it reminded him of playing back home in NYC. Also, the way he and Alex played off of each other was outstanding. Traveled to Atlanta specifically to attend the Marcus Miller concert on Labor Day Weekend. He joined a fabulous band of musicians that kept the pace jamming for hours. A great mix of new material and favorites, some improvised sessions and jazzy versions of other great artists. The venue was good, very intimate, roughly 650 people, general admission, great acoustics. Only down side was parking is a major challenge at this location, be sure to arrive EARLY or be prepared for a long walk after scouring for a parking spot among the neighborhood streets. But back to the concert, Marcus performed a nice selection of lively and soulful tunes and unselfishly showcased the young musicians that he had brought along. Alex on Sax was a master! I Look forward to our next chance to see Marcus perform!

Marcus blew my mind. As a bassplayer myself, it was a revelation to watch the man live with his ACE band. Everybody in the band was beyond gifted. I love how he gave each person in the band a solo in just about every song, and did his bass solo in most songs. What a talent, he combines, slap bass, tapping, fingerstyle, thumb style and some other things that have no name, and does it all. I like his slap forays, but in all honesty, I like the parts where he lays back under the solos as well. My only minor gripe- he had the drums mixed a bit loud, and from my own band experience too loud drums, mean you lose some of the low-end bass guitar clarity. Oh and MM- Bernadette is the best Motown bassline! ;)

MM is a must see. I missed Coltrane and Miles, but I saw Marcus. This show demonstrated why MM has played with icons of the music world. He was more than just a showman he was a virtuoso/maestro/conductor combined. He relates well with the audience on how his travels inspires his songs. His talent and that of the band is far superior than most I've seen and I've seen quite a few shows from jazz to pop to classical. My wife and I were thoroughly impressed.

MY WIFE AND I SAW MM IN MONTREAL LAST SUMMER AT THE JAZZ FEST. WE LIKED IT SO MUCH THAT I BROUGHT HER TO THE BIRCHMERE TO SEE HIM FOR HER BIRTHDAY. THE OTHER BASE LEADS I KNOW OF ARE AVERY BROOKS AND STANLEY CLARK.. ALL THREE ARE GREAT. BESIDES MMs LEAD, HE HAS TREMENDOSLY TALENTED SIDE MEN. THE BAND HERE WAS THE SAME AS IN MONTEAL. SIDE SOLOS: OUT"DAMN"STANDING. WE ENJOYED BOTH SHOWS. THE BIRCHMERE EXPERIENCE WAS MORE INTIMATE BECAUSE OF THE SMALLER HALL. It's hard to go wrong with Marcus Miller. His new band was KILLER, the music was all the things his music usually is: funky, lyrical, melodic, and complex. The sound was perfectly matched to the size of the venue, and I met a lot of other bassists there (I play also) that were really supportive and appreciative not just of Marcus, but of each other as well. This show was great. The show started at 7:30pm. They seated us at 6pm. Front row left courner of the stage. Not bad for $45 tickets. Our waiter took our orders and within 10 or 15 minutes we had our food. I had the Herb Roasted Chicken. It was well prepared and juicy. The veggies were crisp. We finished our meal and waited until 7:30pm. Immediately the musicians came out, then Marcus Miller came out and they got right to it with no introduction. The show was awesome. At several points of the show Marcus Miller played on our corner of the stagr which allowed me to take great close up pictures of him. What was also great is he didnt hog the spotlight. He constantly gave his other musicians their time to shine and introduced them by name and gave them high praises throughout the show. Being a musician I found this very special and refreshing. They were very young and very talented. All in all I very much enjoyed my experience at BB Kings and I especially enjoyed the show. If he is back in town I will definitely catch his show. Great time.

It's just great music - but with meaning and purpose. Marcus always continues to inspire through his music, and this latest album tour is no exception. I could try to explain it, but Marcus himself describes the how and why best. If you've never seen his shows, look him up on YouTube. There are many full-length shows in full production quality. Funky and tight, Marcus' band tore through 2 sets that had everyone in the audience smilin', clappin', and rockin' in their seats. As a musician, writer, arranger, and producer, Marcus has made us smile from Michael Jackson to Herbie Hancock to Wayne Shorter to McCoy Tyner to Aretha Franklin to Elton John to Luther Vandross to LL Cool J to Me'shell Ndegé Ocello and indelibly gracing Miles Davis last several recordings. This night was no different. Bravo, Marcus, I wish you a speedy recovery from the November 25, 2012 bus accident in Switzerland and hope to see you back in the states soon. The concert was awesome! They had a few sound issues at first, but it worked out. I like the variations they incorporated into many of the tunes, including the encore jam of "Blast". There are a lot of major players in the "bass game"--Victor Wooten, Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins, Verdine White, Larry Graham. Marcus is definitely to be counted among that elite crowd. The show was very well executed--the musicianship of all the players was extremely high. Marcus mainly showcased the music from his new CD "Renaissance", another phenomenal entry in his discography. Marcus Miller is not only the best bass player ever, he is a consummate musician. He may also be one of the best bass clarinet players as well. He can play all genres of music, including jazz, funk, rock, and even classical. His solo of "I'll Be There" where he played the bass as if it were a classical guitar was amazing and shockingly original. His concert was simply breathtaking and the musicians in his band were awesome as well. He also is not snobby in that he plays fun funk and pop in addition to more complex jazz to make the night a really fun night.

What a great show! These guys give you more than what you pay for! I went to the show with my Uncle and we were blown away! Marcus is a bad dude and he know s it, yet humble at the same time. We ll definitely catch him again when he s in the DMV. Excellent!

Just got off the smooth jazz cruise. A true humble , pleasant, sweet guy with loads of talent. He is good looking too and crazy about his music. Its hard not to enjoy what he has to say about music and equally hard not to watch and listen with pure pleasure. Play that funky bass man!!!!!!!! So proud of his excellence which is consistent. I will see him locally, its worth another treat and I'll be back on smooth jazz cruise 2020. Not to enjoy him means you just don't know your music. I am a piano player and music was my minor in college. It was fun ending the cruise with "Da butt."" (created by Marcus Miller among , only God knows how many songs he has written.) :0)

If you want an enjoyable, memorable experience, go to a Marcus Miller concert. I call it an "Experience" because with each selection, it's almost like a crescendo, not in loudness, but in the music you're experiencing and enjoying. You're not just listening, per se, but you find yourself engulfed, with each selection getting better and better, in it's own way. This was my first time seeing Marcus Miller, but I can honestly tell you, it will not be my last. As a plus, the musicians on stage backing him up, are top-rated as well. Do yourself a favor. If you ever see tickets for his show, buy them immediately. I can almost guarantee, you will be going back for more -- just like I will be doing as well.

I was surprised to hear that this was Marcus Miller's first time to the Berks Jazz Festival but i am sure it was not his last. It was a fantastic show with an appreciative crowd that bought in back out for an encore featuring Detroit, then melded in with Blast. Marcus highllighted the significance of 2 of his songs, with the story of his father and the dedication of Preacher's Kid almost bring him to tears as well as most of the audience. Funniest moment of the show was in the Mowtown set when he said the father of his drummer was not even born when Papa was a Rolling stone first came out. Marcus is doing what Miles did for him, he has a young band of fantastic musicians, who are aprrencticing in the world of Jazz, Saxophonist Alex Han has been with him at least 3 years, but I think all the other band members are relatively new. Everyone shuld check him out when he tours near you.

On a rare occasion you might think that you are in the dead of night.... But the sun is shinning bright and you can feel the warmth of it's rays.... That was exactly what happened at the Marcus Miller Concert at the Berks Jazz Fest. I drove over two hundred miles and every mile driven was worth it....

As usual he put on an excellent show and it was wonderful to see how he allowed the other musicians to shine during the performance. He spent time talking to and responding to the audience throughout. The band took a 20 minute well deserved break and came back on to finish off the night. It's been a few years since I had seen him perform and I'm glad that I took the time to see him here as he chose to include Atlanta once again as one of his tour dates. 5 star (Amazing) rating from me!

The man is the boss of the electric bass and any instrument he plays. We saw him recently on SJC 16.2. He is really a nice down to earth guy given his talent. I immediately became a fan and am in the process of collecting all of his music. Glad to be able to purchase his recent CD on site. I got his autograph and several photographs with me and him.

Marcus Miller is the best at what he does. He is entertaining, fun and the concert was fantastic. However, there were sound problems with crew members walking out to adjust and the length of time we waited between the Yellowjackets and Marcus was way way way too long.

i've seen mm five times over the years. not only is he a remarkable talent, but he never fails to surround himself with top of the field musicians. he is entertaining and even if playing an older song, he always has a unique approach to it. he also allows much room for his fellow artists to display their talents.
