Walnut Street Theatre's Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story

Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story was the best musical theatre I've seen in 50 years - and I've seen it all! You've heard of triple threats on stage? Well, this ensemble were quadruple threats because they could act, sing, dance AND play their own instruments - all brilliantly! Great drama, as the writing was so very good, too!

It was a loud, wild, fun show. The band had a lot of energy and the crowd had more. It was incredible. It was fun and I'm glad I went.

Seating was cabret style for this show - which meant you sat on stage with the band. Very intimate. Band was very good. Kira is a very beautiful singer. The songs had so much soul in them. The other members of the band were very good & sometimes they made comments throughout the show that were funny & personal. They had 4 local girls in a string quartet & they were just as amazing. Whole show was very very nice.

I was disappointed that there were only four characters in the play. Even my 5 year old grandson asked where all the little girls to which Miss Clavel referred were. It was a bit boring. Music was uninspired, and the sound should have been turned up louder. We were up front and could barely hear at times. I would guess this would be interesting to very young children. Not great production values. The cast was talented, however.

Brian Fallon & the Crowes

Brian Fallon & the Crowes put on an amazing show. The acoustics of The Ryman were a perfect match for all of Fallon's newer and more folk-like songs. It was a flawless performance and one that I will always remember. (My only complaint was the audience. I'm not sure if it was due to the music style or the fact that people were simply waiting for Ryan Bingham to perform, but no one stood up during the performance except me. To each his own, but I don't go to shows to sit down).

I was able to attend this event both nights. I had trouble finding my hotel and arrived late on friday. I really enjoyed Cage the Elephant that night. Saturday was there before they opened the doors, am so thankful that F'real was giving out milkshakes. Made for a good breakfast. I bought VIP tickets but entered through general admission both days and after talking to the right person I had no problem getting my bracelet to enter the VIP section. The shows on saturday were really awesome and definately compensated for the change of venue. Patty Crash was great, Budos Band<-- thumbs up. Zee Avi great music. Sun Airway suprisingly good. Kreayshawn worth the wait for sure. I stood in the front row for 6 hours waiting for her. Unfortunately my pictures didn't turn out that great because of my choice of camera. Should have went with the digital for inside. Girl Talk and Pretty Lights show were utterly mindblowing! The shows were great I had a blast!

"Three One-Act Comedies" a totally misleading title. First one totally unfocused (had one funny joke, about the waiter), second a one-note exercise, a poor thing being victimized and unable to stand up for herself, the victimizer was funny for the first ten minutes, then an irritant. The Woody Allen was an actual comedy, thank God. We went with friends, and were embarrassed to have caused them to pay $127 a ticket for these two downers plus the (30? 40?) minute relief. The Brooks Atkinson is the most uncomfortable theater I've ever been in. I have a (mended) broken hip, and sitting in those cramped conditions was an agony -- until the last play, which took my mind off them.

Paul Byrom

I never appreciated tenors before I heard Paul Byrom sing. His voice is truly a golden voice. He can make you feel such emotion. I get shivers. I cry. I sing along, despite not being able to sing very well. I never tire of playing Paul's music. The bonus is Paul's sense of humor - he's actually a very funny guy. He has wonderful stage presence, a gift that carries over from a genuinely sweet personality when he speaks with you one on one. Paul is simultaneously confident and humble; that's rare. His values are all in the right place. He is simply delightful and is a gift to all of us fortunate enough to see and hear him in person. BEST OF LUCK ON YOUR TOUR PAUL!!!
