Band of Horses

Band of Horses

With a delicate country twang that plays perfectly with the indie rock sound, Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses will murmur his emotionally complex songs to intimate rooms of thousands when the band begins its "Acoustic At The Ryman" Tour in early 2014. The group, originally called Horses, is known best for its melancholy lullaby-like “No One’s Gonna Love You” and the more anthemic “Is There a Ghost,” though they have several songs pulled from their four albums—"Everything All the Time," "Cease to Begin," "Infinite Arms" and "Mirage Rock"—that have enjoyed critical and popular acclaim. With the latest tour comes an accompanying release, "Acoustic At The Ryman," which pares down the sound even further. Co-founded by former Seattleites Bridwell and then bandmate Mat Brooke in 2004, the Band of Horses collective has seen several lineup changes, with the current group including Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds.

the openers came out and started the show off by announcing, "We're the Futurebirds. From Athens, Georgia. GO DAWGS!" Damn straight! The good guys were playing for a berth in the National Championship game on the following Monday and everyone in the audience knew it. The band tore through about 10songs. Mostly concentrating on their Paranoid Letters album, but sprinkling in a new jam, a couple of oldies (including Ski Chalet encore) and bringing out Ben from Band of Horses (decked out in head-to-toe Bulldogs gear) for a rollicking Powderfinger (Young) cover. It was gonna be hard to top. Then, the headliners came out for their set. Ben had changed into different Bulldogs gear. I hadn't seen them since the guitar & bass player left and I was concerned that they would not be "AS" great as they had been the 25 times before. I was happily wrong. Then ,A SPECIAL TREAT! on the 10th anniversary of their seminal record Cease to Begin, the band decided to play the record, beginning to end. DING DING DING!!! We WIN!!! After the 1st set, a greatest hits set was played, although songs from the later albums were omitted from the set, for the most part. The band also brought out the openers for a kickass cover of Bob Seger's- Still the Same. The new players are great replacements and the band hasn't sounded this goods since they were kids playing in little bars... Then, UGA won the best football game in history and everyone lived happily ever after. The End...

The mellow crowd at Pomona's Fox Theater made it easy to get to the front where I enjoyed an unobstructed view of a charming surfy set by indie cuties Willoughby and a killer set by BoH. BoH is probably my favorite band, so I was more or less transfixed through their entire set. They're so talented and so likeable, and their song writing is so solid, I would have driven twice as far to see them. There were no fancy light gags, and not much in the way of antics (although the bass player is fairly animated), but that stuff is all superfluous when you're dealing with music this beautiful and genuine. My friend pointed out that they also have great taste in instruments. Truly, if you're a guitar geek, their lead guitarist has some eye candy (not to mention being pretty easy on the eyes himself). The venue is really nice too, with a couple of bars and lounge areas to hang out in while you wait for the show to start.

these guys put on a great show...my wife was more into them than i was when we went, so i wasn't expecting too much, but they rocked my socks off. even though their recorded music seems soft and mellow, these guys know how to rock. they have a bit of country influence that comes out in some of their songs, which i love being played on pedal steel

BAND OF HORSES never disapoint no matter where they play. Everything was ok this night exept one of the most important things to me and I am sure to the band: the sound was horrible, it sounded like someone just turned down all the treble in my car stereo. All in all they might concider having the sound board guy get his ears checked, he might not even be aware that he or she might have a problem. P.S. BOH should concider recording an album of just cover.

Was really looking forward to this show, loving both of their current albums. They did everyone proud with a fantastic show - great energy, great live sound. Ben's voice was simply spot on tonight, every note reverbing through the theater - Bill(on the bass) had some crazy energy going on, all over the stage and rockin' it back to the amp. Sit-in keyboard/vocals Ryan was a nice fill, and even had lead on one of the new songs - of which they played 4 I think - all sounded GREAT. (cant wait for the new album to drop!) Creighton and Tyler adding in to the mix - everything jsut came together beautifully for an awesome performance. I'm giving them only 4 stars instead of 5, because they didnt play "Detlef Schrempf" dammit!!! LOL....

I discovered this band at Coachella 2009. It was one of my top 3 concerts. I was still impressed by their concert in Pomona. I like the simplicity of the show, amazing music, great lightning effects with beautiful colors. Also, this theater offered a great acoustic, and a good view from different places. I would love to see them again, and would definitely recommend this band to see in concert and festival.

The title pretty much says it. This is not one of those bands that has a hard time duplicating their studio sound at a live event. Vocals come through clearly, (including those awesome harmonies that we all love Band of Horses for). The band is equally on top of their game. Is There a Ghost was, well, as a guy next to me yelled out, "That was RIGHTEOUS!" An up-tempo, shades of Johnny Cash, version of Window Blues was also a stand-out for me. Add in all the other favorites, plus some new songs that sounded great, and we got a really good show.

You couldn't have asked for a better night. BOH was enroute to an all acoustic show in New York the following night, so the crowd was lucky enough to hear a sampling of what was to come. They did not dissapoint. Not only did they slow things down, but they really let loose with some upbeat, twanged out truely folk/country reditions of some of their slower songs. This mixture of slow and barn stomping music isn't the only reason to get out and witness BOH. After every hit they played, they entroduced a new track, things that will carry this band to the future. If you are like me and really can't wait to see what's next from them, make sure you see them live. You will get a taste of what is next and man is it good!

This was the first time I have seen these guys live and it was a great show overall! Ram's Head is a great venue and I plan to attend more concerts there in the future. As far as the show itself, I felt Band of Horses started out slow. They opened with a ballad and followed with "The First Song". They should have opened with that for sure. A couple more ballads were mixed in the next couple of songs. The second half of the show certainly did not disappoint.

I only got into them 3 months ago, but in a BIG way! I was lucky to get tickets to this sold out event. I was even luckier to meet lead singer Ben at a restaraunt before the show. He was very nice to take the time to talk with me as long as he did. The show was nothing short of EPIC. Great setlist too. My only complaint was the sound was just a tad ( I mean a tad too) too loud and the chitter chatter of people behind me in the back. Who pays good money to a sold out show and spends the entire time chatting to their friend? I couldn't do anything about the sold out-ness of the show, making it very hard to move about. But hey, thats what happens when your favorite bands play intimate shows instead of coliseums. All and all, an amazing evening!

Saw the Band of Horses in SF, it was undoubtedly the best concert ever. One of those bands that sound good on track, but sound AMAZING live. Originally I was a little sad because I was looking forward to seeing both BOH and the Kings of Leon... but Band of Horses DID NOT disappoint! Had a blast! We got there right as Midlake was wrapping up (which is a disappointment, as i wanted to check them out). But it meant less waiting for the main attraction. Opening band, Johnny & Jenny OVERPLAYED their welcome! We paid to go see BOH, not J&J, and they were too loud and too long. Uncle Mountain, on the other hand, was great. BOH didn't start playing until AFTER 10 pm. Once they started, they were fantastic, but we couldn't stay for the whole show, b/c they started so late. Big disappointment there. Also, the sound was simply too loud for both J&J and BOH. It's hard to hear the great music when it's overwhelmed by the distortion. No need to overdo it. BOH is great in its purity; that purity should be sustained in concert!

Band Of Horses were absolutely fantastic live. The entire band is so talented that if anything their live performance sounds cleaner than their albums without giving you the impression they're playing the same set list for the 100th day in a row in a robotic haze. They played like this was their last concert, glorious. If i had to give a downside it would be their choice in opening act. The second opener was a god awful 90s rock band called Brad. Brad's songs were extremely poorly written musically and especially lyrically. I hope I never have to suffer through one of their songs again. BOH on the other hand ROCKED MY FACE OFF!!!! It was my first time attending a benefit and wow let me tell you the vibe was awesome!!! Very chill and relaxed. Not crowded at all. Loved all the performers. Shirley Manson was amazing with her beautiful angelic voice. Tom Morello was great. I loved Butch Walker as well. And the headliners Band of Horses rocked the house! Love that band. I missed Jarrod Gorbel (which is my favorite) but I heard he was great also. There were some emotional moments when they were talking about Pablo. Overall the experience was great. EVERYONE that played that night was great! The show moved along very quickly with shorts sets by each artist with Nine Inch Nails bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen doing a great job as MC. In addition to playing great music, the artists shared personal stories of how cancer has touched loved ones in their lives. Pablove founder Jeff Castelaz told the moving story of his son Pablos and his battle with cancer which was ultimately lost and a teenager was brought out on stage who told the story of her ongoing battle with cancer, which she is still fighting and winning. There were several moments I started to tear up. Cancer is a horrible disease, even more horrible when you think of a child or young adult going through it who should living, learning, growing and looking forward to the years ahead of them, not fighting for their life enduring regimens of chemotherapy. God Bless everyone involved that gave of their time and talents that fueled this rallying cry for the Pablove foundation! - The only disappointment of the evening was the absence of the drummer for Band of Horses.

These 2 bands prove that a band doesn't need fancy light shows, make-up, or any kind of stage antics to make their fans fall forever in love with their sound. Since I got there rather early and was one of the first 50 or so people inside, I was able to receive a free upgrade into a VIP-type area. I was in a raised area (still on ground floor) with a high-top table and chair with a waiter attending to us. It was really awesome! You want to be entertained? Go see Band of Horses live. Energy, enthusiasm, and pure elation! You won't be disappointed. They put on a fantastic high energy show. Bridwell's quirkiness will reel you in and have you feeling like you're watching your best friend or brother rock it out. Ryan Monroe is a phenom. There's something special about what he brings to the stage. The opening act - The Artisanals - was the icing on the cake. They're new, but polished and bring a lot to the table. It was obvious they were there to entertain you and that they have a great time while doing it. They did not disappoint. I not only look forward to seeing them again myself, but when I saw they would be performing in Idaho, I immediately contacted some friends there and urged them to go. Yes, they are that good. The venue (House of Blues) is intimate, much like the Tabernacle in Atlanta. You get the good vibes, great sound, and up close experience. The show was worth more than the ticket price. What a great performance. They played with great conviction. I will see them again when they come back around!

The band sounded awesome! The lights were amazing and the background pictures were at times funny (the duck?!), but mostly awesome. I had a great time and can't wait until I get to see them again! The crowd at the Norva

I am a big Band of Horses fan. We were one of the fortunate to see them each year in ATL for their New Year's concerts. Talk about epic. They played for an hour, took a break to ring in the new year, then played another hour+. We have the show posters framed on our wall. This was a special concert for my wife and I since we have just moved into the Nashville area. We have never been to the Ryman auditorium, so when we saw that BOH was playing there we thought it would be the perfect first concert! If you have never been to the Ryman then I have to say - GO NOW. Be aware that they print their own posters (called Hatch Prints) and they sell out fast, so get there early. Even if you do not want a poster there is a lot of displays to see so get there with enough time to look around or take the tour earlier in the day. The venue is historic, intimate and just off the main downtown strip. We caught the second show they did at the Ryman. The crowed was definitely into it. The reason I say that the performance was great for a fan (besides the fact that it rhymed in the title) was that it was not the best performance from a musical standpoint, but incredible from an experience with the band standpoint. They apparently rocked hard the night before so Ben's voice was a little worse for wear. Maybe for this reason, instead of having an opening act, they opened with an hour long acoustic set. It was very refreshing. I kept looking at my wife thinking how fortunate we were to be a part of it. I will say, I have not been to any other shows on this tour, so they may be doing this every night. Still, it was very cool to hear the songs sung this way! They took a short break like is customary when the opener has concluded and the stage needs to be set for the main act. When they came back they ROCKED for almost 2 more hours! While it is true that Ben's voice cracked a few times and at one point he had to start over, the shear weight of the performance was incredible. The crowd encouraged him even through the missteps to create a feeling of one big community coming together to enjoy great music. At the close of the two hours, once they left the stage, the cheering was deafening. The crowd stomped and cheers and clapped and yelled louder and more enthusiastically than any I have heard. Obligingly the band took the stage for an encore that was very gratifying. Overall it was an incredible event at an incredible venue. The unpolished nature of the event almost enhanced the feeling of community. A concert I will not soon forget.

Band of Horses were excellent live. Their harmonies were great and they didn't disappoint. Very great and entertaining show if you love the band. Feel free to bring someone unfamiliar to the band, too, though, because Band of Horses is pretty accessible. Merchandise was fairly priced, as well. Overall awesome show, beautiful venue, fantastic experience! They're a very talented band and I would jump at the chance to see them again.

What a show! The acoustic set to kick it off was unreal, such a treat. As the electric set got going, the energy in the Ryman was palpable. I will never forget it!

Band of Horses was one of the best performances I've seen live. Every song was like listening to them in my car. Their acoustic performance before they rocked out, left me speechless! I would definitely go see Band of Horses again!

I've listend I Band of Horses for years but nothing could've prepared me for their live performance! It was one of those rare concerts where the band actually sounds better live than on their album. The bass kick that reverberated a couple times during the set made everyone go "woah." Bass was high enough to rattle one's insides. Amazing. Didn't think it possible to love them anymore but seeing Band of Horses live was awesome. See them before you die.

As usual, BoH didn't disappoint, but also as usual, Fox Theater acoustics did. It's a shame really, that such a beautiful venue has such dreadful acoustics. I've been at several events here in the past year and listened from all over the theater (was in the Mezzanine for this), and I have to say this place has the worst sound of any venue I've been to in recent memory. It sounds like the band is playing through a tunnel. Lots of base, a little bit of high end but absolutely nothing in the middle. It really spoils the experience, and sadly, I think I've finally made my mind up to never see another event here unless they fix the dreadful sound situation.

Band of Horses' late show at the Manhattan Center, Dec 11th, was indeed Electric! Three tours into them, this was by far their best performance I'd seen. Oakland's Fox Theater was an enthusiastic introduction. San Francisco's Fillmore was a weed party. But NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom Rocked! This was the rawest I had heard the band, but not in a painful ear splitting kind of way...their sound was just this great organic energy that vibrated through your bones and made the band's melodies & rhythms electrify your soul. In fact, Benjamin Bridwell took BOH songs to new heights as he improvised and stretched out his oh so familiar sing along melodies that made you feel like you were getting a truly one of a kind performance, and not just a rehash of their recorded versions. Watching him let loose and really rock out with head bobbing abandon really added to the energy too. Oh, and let's not forget the visually stunning, vibrantly colored, natural landscape photographic back drops that accompany each song. It just really adds to the timeless vibe of the show. Hands down, best time I've seen the band. I love their music. I will see them again, and again!

Personally, I extremely enjoyed this concert because I was up front and the audience was mature and friendly. Everyone was there for the music. The Electric Factory is a great venue. Band of Horses were AMAZING. They had an awesome sound, awesome performance, and awesome stage setup. I would go to this concert over and over again. Sooo enjoyable. This was my Christmas present to my boyfriend (who got me into Band of Horses). He was cheering and clapping and singing the entire time. I'd say that's a win.

This was as usual an epic show. Jason Lytle was awesome but Band of Horses killed it. I saw them this summer when they opened for My Morning Jacket at the Mann Center, I do prefer that venue for their type of music but the Electric Factory was still great. The night of the concert was my last night in my 20's so this night was to celebrate turning 30 with my best friend...I would have had it no other way! Perfect end to my 20's to which Band of Horses dominated my choice of artists.

First, I am not a fan of the venue (Hammerstein Ballroom), but I really wanted to see Band of Horses since I've missed them every other time they've been in NYC. I am so glad I did because this is one of the best shows I've seen this year (and I've seen well over 75). The band came out and stated, "We're going to play all of our hits tonight" which is what any fan wants to hear (check the set list below - they didn't lie). They looked like they were having a blast on stage and that translated to an unbelievable performance. The sound was spectacular and the crowd was as electric as the band. If you like Band of Horses, please go see them on this tour. You'll thank me later.

Awesome show...cool old theater venue. Sounds was great, seats were great. Lead singer's vocal did get drowned out at times due to the theater acoustics. His voice makes this band who they are, in my opinion :) Overall great experience. Love these guys.

I was so looking forward to this show. I get goosebumps every time i hear "The Funeral"... and to be honest that was the only song that they performed well. There were parts of "No one's gonna love you" that were good. The rest of the show seemed so monotone and just continued that way. When they started "is there a ghost" the lead singer admitted he was lost and the other band members started singing for him. It was good from then on, but come on. its your song! I knew where you were! Jeez! Overall disappointing...

Traffic was HORRIBLE and put a damper on my feelings for even coming to this concert--yes, at one point I was thinking of turning around and going home--but I didn't and was so glad that I stuck with the plan. I love Frightened Rabbit! The lead singer is completely irreverent and so what I needed to get into the evening. Great songs and they were given time for a full set, which I appreciated as it was them that I had originally come to see. They did not disappoint. Band of Horses were next and hot damn, they were so good. Great selection of songs chosen. What I really loved, was the fact that the band members were so appreciative of us being there listening to them--we were thanked over and over again for coming and being there. The crowd responded in kind--we were so loud!! (and I was wearing ear plugs!!) Great time and yes, I will make the effort again to see either band.

I love House of Blues and Band of Horses so I was really surprised to not be thrilled by the Dec 15th performance. Band didn't seem to be on their game. Nothing felt unique or special to live set. Set list didn't put forward their best work for this kind of concert. (If you want to play slow ballards, go acoustical and give everyone in the audience chairs. Predominantly slow stuff to a packed house led to a bored and restless audience.) Venue felt like they sold too many tickets. Big shows at House of Blues have never felt as painfully crowded. Sound was okay but not stellar.

One of the most under-appreciated bands of our time. The bass line could have been brought down a lot during the show as it drowned out a lot of the vocals, but they played a great set and sounded great.
