Spectacular show. Though no longer on Broadway or in the US tour, Billy Elliot has now gone into regional productions. Anyone who had doubts about these, don't. Spectacular show. The regionals are wonderfully done and they maintain all the intensity of the original story and the fantastic musical score of Elton John. Take your family and enjoy.

We had never seen this Illinois troupe perform before, but I had seen Billy Elliot performed in London's West End (at the Victoria Palace Theatre). My expectations were thus lower compared to a Broadway or West End production. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of singing, acting, dancing, music, and staging -- despite a stage that was much smaller (perhaps 1/3 or less of the square footage of the Victoria Palace Theatre), this local production was amzaingly close to the level of performance I had seen in London. Kudos to the local production team and actors! Having seen Billy Elliot months before Margaret Thatcher's passing, I was also curious about how the infamous Christmas party scene would be handled. In England, I had learned that there was still bad blood on the topic (but subsequently learning that this had thrown nearly a million people, workers plus their families, into poverty in the 1980s made this less surprising) -- so the London scene was unabashedly and extremely anti-Thatcher. If memory of that earlier staging is accurate, the hard edges of this Christmas scene were softened in the local Drury Lane production, and seemed almost respectful compared to the original. Well, done, in my opinion. So overall, this production was surprisingly good, and after having finally learned about this gem of a theater, production team, and actors, we will be back.

Main character, Bill Elliot was an amazing dancer, especially for his age. He was on stage almost all the time and to be able to perform at that level at such a young age is quite remarkable.

I purchased our Billy Elliot tickets for the 18th of March as a birthday gift for my husband. Little did we know that it was their opening night of previews. Having seen Billy Elliot the movie a few years back, I was hoping the live musical would stay true to the same story line. We were both blown away by the dancing, especially that of the evening's "Billy", played by Cesar Corrales. We were equally impressed with his poise during a staging malfunction that required him to re-start his "Angry" dance. All of the children in the show exhibited great stage presence beyond their years. The only fault of this performance is that it didn't last longer! There aren't enough stars to grade this winner.

Funny, touching, rousing, inspiring; Billy Elliot was all of these. The actors were strong as actors, singers and dancers. Tommy Batchelor and Keean Johnson were wonderful as Billy and Michael. Parents should note that like the movie, there is very strong language in the play and I would not recommend it for young children. I plan to go again!

Everything about this show is outstanding--but especially the dancing. To see the cast - especially Billy - perform live was a true gift. The play made me laugh, smile, and even brought a tear to my eye a time or two. Great entertainment - but if young children are in the audience, be warned about the dialogue. The play is true to the climate of the time, including profanity (spoken as part of the dialect). Don't miss it!

The dancing was as great as everyone expected it to be. But I love musicals for the music first and foremost, and this score was unoriginal and redundant. The songs went on for far too long with uninteresting melodies and one verse worth of lyrics. The music was clearly a vehicle for the dancing, rather than a stand-alone aspect of the show. I expected far better of Elton John. However, the cast did a wonderful job with the score they had; the acting, dancing, and overall spirit of the show were a joy to watch. I am especially impressed with all of the child actors, particularly the lead characters. In summary: If you're looking for a show with a killer soundtrack, look elsewhere. But stay for the dancing.

The music was beautiul and I can't say enough about the dancing- at one point the simple act of two people dancig on stage had my heart pounding and my tears flowing. A funny, heartwarming, beautiful show that at the same time amazes you with it's technical feats.

If this were the 1950-1975 this musical would have closed opening night. In today's age as long you fill the time slot with a show to see and sounds to hear, you don't need to have hit songs to be remembered. Such is case with this show. It's amusing and all, the kids are talented, some funny lines but you won't remember a song 10 minutes after walking out the door.

The San Diego Musical Theatre & California Ballet performance of Billy Elliot was fantastic!! I consider myself a big Billy Elliot fan, having seen it in London 4 times and Broadway San Diego's version once, (and Elliott Hanna's DVD multiple times), before this version. This version was every bit as good as the London version, and Charlie Garton's performance was as touching as his talent was impressive. I am looking forward to seeing more of his performances in his sure-to-be successful career if he chooses it. All of the actors were great in their roles. This is a story that even after seeing it multiple times, is still moving and inspirational.

That's what Drury Lane's Production Company deserve for their magnificent presentation of Billy Elliot which closed with two shows on the 7th of June. It was the end of two months and 69 performances of pure theatrical magic and I would suggest any one who missed seeing this sleeper of a Tony Award winning show, missed something very special. Having viewed this musical from London, NYC, Toronto, Chicago, and a dozen Midwestern cities, in all the major venues, I'm confident in saying Drury Lane's presentation was not only equal to, but in many ways, measurably better than Broadway or London, as well as the International Tour. Special recognition has to go to Kyle Halford and Nicholas Dente, the two superiorly trained youngsters who played the role of Billy...the talent and energy which required the boys to be involved on the stage for the entire 2hrs 45min length of the show. It's an unprecedented role for boys their age, and they very easily matched or exceeded similar performers in the main theaters. I saw ten shows while it was at the Lane and only wish I could have seen more...however, living a couple hous away in North Central Indiana just precluded my being able to do that. Again, congratulations to the entire cast of this musical. It was a home run every time you were on stage. Unforgettable!!!

Such a shame if you talked yourself out of going to see "Billy Elliot the Musical" at Drury Lane during the past couple of months. Not sure I can add much more to the reviews I've already submitted for this show. Amongst the superlatives which describe "Billy," it was nothing less than spectacular, glorious, sad, invigorating, filled with wonderful dancing and musical numbers, all telling a story of a young boy's courage to "be himself" (a ballet dancer) despite severe and biased objections from family and peers. Kyle Halford and Nicholas Dante were the heart and sole of the story, both supremely talented and trained, and both experiencing the most demanding role ever performed by a youngster on any Broadway type stage. These two boys were nothing less than magnificent. Such a shame the show couldn't last forever at the Lane as I'm not sure much of the general public is knowledgable of what this Tony Award winner is about, or that it was even out there. Absolutely one of the top Broadway musicals of our lifetimes, notwithstanding, of all time.

That is, it's almost impossible to believe that a youngster of 14years old could so thoroughly command a stage of a major Broadway type production to the extent Nicholas Dante demonstrated during the matinee on Thursday. I've lost count as to the number of reviews I've written on Billy Elliot the Musical over the years, or on the performances of dozens of youngster I've viewed in the role of Billy. Nicholas' interpretation on this day literally left me dumbfounded, notwithstanding, blowing the roof off Drury Lane's theater in the process. A performance of an extraordinary range of emotional acting ability, highly skilled dancing ability in both tap and classical ballet...this kid has it all and he delivers it all with an energy level which defys logic. The show is in town until the 7th of June and I anticipate not letting it leave town without seeing it three more times You would do yourself a favor by taking your entire family to see it as well. You will be thoroughly rewarded by his magnificent performance.

If you have not booked yourself and your family to view "Billy Elliot the Musical" at Drury Lane's elegant theater, your are missing a production which is equal to, if not, better than the original performance either in NYC, the Oriental in Chicago, or the International Tour. The adult cast is utterly superb, and you will fall in love with the youngsters who make up the heart and soul of this musical. Leading that group, of course, are Nicholas Dante and Kyle Halford alternating in the role of "Billy," and Michael Harp as best friend "Michael." And speaking of superb, Nic and Kyle command the show with their acting, gorgeous dancing, and faultless interpretation of "Billy's" role in the story. These two youngsters are magnificent throughout, and should not be missed. Having viewed numerous "Billy's" across the globe at major venues, Nic and Kyle would blow the roofs off any venue in which they might appear. They are that good. Michael Harp as Billy's star crossed friend fulfills the role with great humor and is a scene stealer in his own right. All in all, the staging, the lighting, Elton John's score, and most of all the dancing and story line will capture your heart and make you a Billy fan for life. This is a show which should not be missed. Even if you know nothing about the story and music, it is still a must see. Do yourself and your family a favor and don't pass it up.

I have seen Billy Elliot about 5 years ago and loved it! After Les Mis and Book of Mormons, this is my 3rd favorite musical of all time. Drury Lane's production is absolutely awesome, comparable with the Chicago production I saw a few years back. The Drury cast was great. Billy was exceptional, so was the Dad. The grandma was great too. I have listened to Grandma's song many times, but I never felt that much sadness when she sang it. I loved Michael too! That kid is a natural actor. Great comic timing. Of course, the reading of Mum's letter was heartbreaking. There was sobbing all around!

I drive three hours one way to Drury Lane, so my investment in a day at the theater is more than just the price of a ticket. However, I can honestly say that I got more than my money's worth with the production of BILLY ELLIOT. I want to give particular credit to the dialog coach. The dialects in BILLY ELLIOTT were totally believable AND totally understandable. Nicholas Dante (Billy) is an extremely talented and advanced dancer despite his young age, but Michael Harp (as Billy's cross-dressing friend) steals the show.

The finest production and interpretation of this fantastic musical presented, and you can find it all on the Drury Lane's stage from now until June 7th. On this day the role of Billy was played by Kyle Hanford who provided the audience with another sterling performance in perfect line with all his previous presentations. The supporting cast is above first rate, notwithstanding, the music, lighting, and most of all the dancing, will delight all parents and youngster who see this musical. And, in fact, all parents and children should see Billy Elliot, given it is a story of courage and determination to pursue one's artistic nature despite communal pressures to do otherwise. In Kyle Hanford you will find a performance of stamina unlike any role known to a young man of his age. He commands the stage and he demands your attention through his Iconic acting and dancing, literally, never letting go. He is the heart of the production and worth all time and money to see perform.

Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012 - Fischer Theater Detroit. This show never disappoints!!! But having seen BETM in other venues, the performance wasn't as crisp as I have seen before. Michael does a great job stealing the scene when he is on stage. Dad (Rich Herbert) and Tony (Cullen Titmas) were only OK, not very convincing in their role. I thought their singing needed more power. Grandma was awesome. Ben Cook did a great job in singing and acting as Billy, one of the best I've seen. However, his lack of dancing background is apparent in the ballet scenes. You could tell his technique was very basic. This is not what I expected when paying over $100 per ticket and knowing how much recruitment and training happens behind the scenes. That said, he surprised my wife and I during Electricity. From a stage and background perspective, the North America tour does have extra challenges. The stage in Detroit was a bit smaller. The orchestra was also a bit weak. I do not know if they also travel with the actors. Looking forward to see BETM in Lansing and Grand Rapids. NY (2x) , Chicago (8x) and London (1x).

I can't believe what a disappointment this show was. After seeing the excellent movie over a decade ago, I had such high expectations for this musical adaptation. First off, with a running time of 3 hours, the show was WAY TOO LONG. It could have easily been cut to a more reasonable running time. The show dragged and the pacing was off. The role of Billy switches between 4 boys depending on the night of the performance. For the performance I attended, the role of Billy was miscast. It was played by a very talented young actor named JP Viernes, who is of Asian descent. An Asian boy cast as the son of a British miner? It was risky to cast an actor of Asian decent and I'm afraid it misfired. It made every segment where Billy interacts with his white biological father and mother very awkward and contrived. But most important of all, the musical segments were so unmemorable. You leave the theater not humming a single tune from the performance. Most musical numbers were just plain boring. The show does have some strengths though. The dance segments were very good. The Swan Lake dream sequence in particular was very nicely done. As for the other cast members, Billy's cross dressing friend was just brilliant. He literally stoled the show and was a crowd favorite. One final note. Despite the predominately young actors, this is by no means a show geared towards younger audiences. There is a preponderance of vulgar language and gestures throughout the show that were just not necessary. I wished the positives surpassed the negatives, but the show overall was a big disappointment. If you've seen the film, DO NOT see this show! It's one of those rare situations where the film is actually far more superior than the musical adaptation.

I had been looking forward to seeing Billy Elliot for over a year and had high expectations going in. I was impressed. The boys that play Billy are absolutely amazing. I had the pleasure of seeing Giuseppe Bausilio and meeting him after the show. He was so sweet and you could tell that he loved being Billy.

Well worth the money! Don't miss this show! I can see why Billy Elliott won so many Tony Awards. This show has everything an audience would enjoy for entertainment! I loved the acting, music, stage set designs, dancing, well developed characters, the wide range of emotions and just about everything! GO SEE IT!

"Billy Elliot" is a beautiful story of a young boy with untapped potential. His out-of-shape dance teacher, (usually with a cigarette in her mouth), discovers the boy's talent and devotes her free time to helping him realize his gift. I loved the lower-class English accents, the guttural language, the songs, and the dance, always, the dance. Billy eventually tries out for a prestigious school, but the working-class strike that his father and brother endure divides not only the family, but also the community. The scene in which he and his future self dance in a spotlight, is a touching moment of what the boy has achieved, and what he is capable of achieving in adulthood. Billy's deceased 'mum' appears a couple of times and I ached for him because of the moments in his life they would never share. The mother reassures her son that she will always be with him, and that is what breaks the audience's heart. I first fell in love with the movie "Billy Elliot" and have the same criticism for the play. When the head of the London dance school asks Billy how he feels when he's dancing, he gives a hard-to-believe response...something about feeling electricity and feeling free. I think Billy should have said, "Dancing makes me feel like me mum's still alive," because after all, that is the truth. I realize this criticism has more to do with the playwright, than the play; in truth, this play had me laughing, crying, and rooting for the boy from the wrong side of the tracks. I go to the theater to see and hear a dramatic story that will stay with me. I don't need the kind of special effects that so many movies advertise. "Billy Elliot" is first rate, wonderful, and fun. It's the kind of play that makes you want to talk to the stranger next to you, because you've just shared something profound with him!

My husband and I decided to go to Chicago for the weekend and celebrate my 62nd birthday. I received the notice from Ticketmaster that Billy Elliot The Musical was in Chicago so decided to attend. It was an unexpected delight! What talented people and such a beautiful theater! Being in Chicago was fantastic!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed the show. The story brought tears to my eyes more than once, but it was an uplifting show that sent us out at the end with smiles on our faces. The music and choreography were integrated very effectively with the action. What an amount of talent on that stage!

This show is amazingly casted and demanding of its' players who deliver 110 % ! It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a show from start to finish...it's a great experience for theater goers of all ages...although i would love to see more young people Billy's age (11 years old) attending this event for pure inspiration, I would caution that the use of some raw language with and by some of the kids in the show, may be offensive to many parents. it's too bad that more young poeple will be kept away because of the language...the story is a great one and very real.

Although the dancing was amazing and the story line was good. We felt compelled to walk out in the middle due to the foul language (even in the music score). I know this does not bother most people but it was too much for my daughter and me.

The opening number for me was the best part. Much heart and soul. The accents were consistent even with the children and through the singing. It was definitely a good story with good actors and good surprises. The story is almost predictable, but not boring due to the good dance and song numbers. Two thumbs up!

I had see the movie years ago and really enjoyed it so was curious as to how they would tell the story with words and song. I felt they did a wonderful job following the story, for the most part. I was glad the violence was kept to a minimum since the movie was at times, brutal. Elton John's score was electifying as well as powerful and emotional. I loved the singing, stomping and dancing of the police and coal mine workers as they connnected/represented the struggles of both Billy and those suffering from the coal strike. The dance instructor was sassy and showed her soft side when Billy mentioned his "mum". I thought that the multiple use of scenery was a great way to show just how close//desperate the people of this town were, i.e: moving the bedroom/house in and out of the alley/meeting house/dance/boxing studio. Billy's dancing was phenomenal and so fun to watch. What talented kids all of them.

I had very high hopes for this show and I really hate to give a bad review, because I Love live theater, but this show was drab, sad and the actual numbers went on and on. The long dance number was good, but why sooooo long. The lack of laughter, pizazz and clever sets, costumes (aside from the dancing dresses), catchy tunes, added to the strong accents made it very trying experience. I guess if my own child was in it, it would have been worth the tik price, and I hope many watching came to see siblings, etc. At intermission, my husband left, as did the father and 2 young men next to us. The young man in front of us fell asleep, despite the persistent nudges from his Mom. My daughter and I struggled through the second half hoping that something would light a spark, but alas no go. We live up in Vista and have many wonderful theaters around us, so I will avoid this theater as their show expectations and not mine. So sorry.

I saw the movie many years ago and was interested to see how the musical would handle some of the scenes. The musical did not disappoint!! The production, music, singing, dancing and acting were great. One aspect I really enjoyed was the men harmonizing as they sang as a chorus. Beautiful!

Cast was very good. Sets were terrific. Show was too long and there were too many swear words used as much of the audience was made up of younger children. Many of the accents were difficult to understand. Boy who played Billy was good but his dancing certainly not up to Broadway standards yet. Still a very good presentation.

I love the movie! I am always breathless and on the edge of my seat to see Billy's beautiful swan leap in the air. In going to the play I was so excited to see that beautiful finale extended w/ some beautiful dancing. That didn't happen. it was thrown into the middle and though it was beautiful, I felt it left me wanting to see more.

Took my daughter for her honors dance class assignment. I've seen many shows come through Raleigh, but this was one of the worst. The dancing was excellent, especially Billy, but the singing was mediocre at best and the story was weak. The actors all tried to portray northern English accents, but they oscillated between English, Irish, Scottish, and North Carolinian. They even tried to sing in accent - NO ONE SINGS IN ACCENT! The acting was very amateur - it was obvious this was not a touring Broadway company.

I really enjoyed this show. Cast was very talented, and it was funnier than I expected. My only complaint was the cigarette smoke. I'm very sensitive to it, and with our seats being on row H, it was really stifling at times as several cast members would be smoking at once. All in all, I loved it!
