Hunchback of Notre Dame

I saw the La Jolla production of tgis in 2014, and Cabrillo did a great job keeping the spirit and plot similar but also making it their own. There were some audio flaws as characters were drowned out by the orchestra. There also was some staging issues, especially during Frollo's death as the audience laughed and cheered (not the response it should have). Overall, I highly recommend. Will North did a great job bringing this to life and making it more kid friendly!

The Hunchback of Notre Dame was absolutely stunning! The story is of Quasimodo, the deformed bell ringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, and his relationship with Archdeacon Frollo, Gypsy Esmeralda, Captain of the Guard Phoebus, and the outside world. This show has only one set for the entire show and its beautiful. Since the sets aren't rotating, we get more time to spend with the characters and the story. The costumes were so colorful and character specific that you knew who was who and whom they were with. I was surprised by how much choreography there was in this production. It was energetic, fast paced, and used very effectively. In my opinion, the best part of this show is the music! The singing and orchestral instrumentation is so intense; it really stresses the feeling of the musical. Its quieter moments really stand out because they're so sweet, simple, and sentimental when compared to the chaos around them. There is only one word to describe the actors' acting and singing ability, and that is passionate. Every single actor understood their character perfectly and portrayed them in a way that got their messages across. All of them had subtle and forthright moments. Lastly, the themes expressed in this musical are so relevant now more than ever! I was shocked how relevant this show seemed to our time despite taking place in 1482. The 1996 Disney animated film is my favorite movie and I was so excited to see it live on stage. However, don t expect to see a direct film to stage adaptation as they did make some changes. They kept almost all the score from the film and added more songs to the musical and they fit perfectly. The biggest change in this adaptation is the plot as the musical is based on the book rather than the Disney film. While adults will definitely enjoy this production, I think that young children will not. The only visual change that they made that I wished they had kept from the film was Phoebus golden armor, as it would have made him stand out more. Other than that, I can t express how much of a must see this show is! I strongly recommend it.

The play incorporated songs from the Disney movie and songs I'd never heard before. The stage was gorgeous. The actors were phenomenal. I loved every bit of it. Frollo was the archbishop instead of a judge, but he had more of a backstory. It was very well put together. Super glad I went.

A very enjoyable show. It s a more literal telling of the Disney version of the Hunchback, unlike the productions in La Jolla and the Paper Mill. They more heavily rely on costuming for Quasi but keep the shows original ending. It might be a little too dark for young children, but if you re familiar with the Disney movie (or just the story in general) you d know that. Great show, great cast. Would see again.

Great venue to watch a concert or play. The cast for Hunchback was terrific. All had amazing voices. I highly recommend this play and this venue to everyone!

The Hunchback of Notre Dame production at the Kavli was really excellent! The sets and staging were designed to allow the audience to follow the action and provide a wonderful backdrop. Casting did a wonderful job! Each of the characters fit their role and performed with enthusiasm and high ability. Especially the four main characters stood out for the added nuances they provided even when not singing, speaking or being the main focus. Also the choreography was all original and worked wonderfully. This was truly a superior production, and if we were going to be in town we would go see it again. (We're not related to anyone involved.)

We ve waited a long time for this play! The singing was AMAZING, especially Esmeralda and the Hunchback. We really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who loves musicals.
