This was a well worth it show to see. I can't believe how great all the musicians were, but the most exciting beside Edgar were the Vinilla Fudge. I get it now. I never knew how great this band was live. I turned to my friend during the show and told him I finally got it tonight, I finally understood why so many people in the past have told me how great this band is. Edgar was also amazing and I would highly recommend checking him out. It was a great tribute to my hero Johnny Wimter!

Saw them close by where I live, great seats, intimate setting close to stage. Edgar Winter was phenomenal; Frankenstein equipped with strapped keyboard, drums, and saxophone was worked by Edgar. Then Free Ride was played. Perfect. His voice still sounds great, and he exhuberates the same amount of vibrant energy. Great seeing a legend (Johnny Winter). One let down was that he didn't use a slide AT ALL, but he did kill it, even playing two Rolling Stone songs. Rick Derringer was okay, did Star Spangled Banner, but I was extremely impressed with Kim Simmonds. He rocked that flying V, playing Tell Mama. The only bummer was that Leslie West didn't show. Felt bad for the people who were wearing Mountain t-shirts. Overall, the guys, considering their ages, still delivered. Was worth it to see all-time legends and highly recommend.

I would have come here just to see Johnny Winter (2nd time) but having his brother Edgar, Rick Derringer & Savoy Brown made it all the better. These guy are all up there in years but are still killin' it. Johnny Winter is one of the most amazing guitar players alive today. He is a legend! His brother Edgar is a talent in his own right playing keyboards, sax & drums along with singing the lead vocals. All the acts gave it their all during the 3 hr show. It was well worth the price of admisssion!

I'll have to say that seeing Johnny Winter for the first time was a treat. He is getting on in years and I will probably not have the opportunity to see him again. Edgar Winter was great as usual. He sings and plays various instruments with unbridled energy. Rick Derringer was so so. Too much banter, more playing. As for Kim Simmonds, formerly of Savoy Brown, his time on stage was much too short. Also, I was expecting that they all play together more than just one song. On a final note, without notice, Leslie West did not perform.

Somewhat disappointed that Leslie West was a no show but otherwise a great show. Kim was great start. Rick is still a top guitar player. Edgar was great to see. What an all around musician! JW is not as spry as he used to be, but a treat to watch and hear none the less. I grew up listening and watching these guys so is was like going back in time.

Opening acts were mostly forgetable. Rick Derringer, Kim Simmonds and Edgar Winter all had same band, they just changed front man! Edgar is still the most uncomfortable front man in the business! But he plays everything he touches great!! Johnny rocked it as always, although the vocals were lacking. And Leslie West was a "No Show"!! Big part of why I bought a ticket!!

Short sets, bad choice of material, Rick Derringer talked to much! Edgar kept looking At his watch and hardly played the keyboards, Johnny Winter is looking bad and sits when performing, I get this and it's understandable, But he did not play with authority at this show, Pretty sloppy really! The sound was bad for the whole show But during Johnny's set it was terrible, just A wall of sound, no instrument distinction. It was kinda cool to c these cats, for past memories But I'm just saying...not a memorable show Unfortunately!

Leslie West was advertised as one of the shows preformers but was a no show! The sound mix quakity was poor eduring the Johnny Winter show. The drums and otherguitars were way to loud and Johnny Winters guitar was muffled fo the the poor mix

The entire Rock'n'Blues Fest show was fantastic. Kim Simmonds from Savoy Brown has a fluid blues rock style and a gorgeous tone. I very much enjoyed the three new songs he played. Peter Rivera is a rock solid drummer and has a great soul voice. The Rare Earth set was loads of fun. Their mix of Motown sound, with a hard rock edge is a nice blend and especially suited to rock out live. Vanilla Fudge's sound--booming and bombastic--is not exactly my cup of tea, but there's no denying the power of the heavy bottom end that double-bass master Carmine Appice lays down. The harmonies those guys sing, are an extreme and oddly welcome counterpoint to the otherwise heaviness of their music. Lastly, Edgar Winter is no less than a blues/rock g-d. I'm not sure if his vocal moves are considered scat signing but they were amazing and the guitarist he had playing with him--who also accompanied some of the other bands--played blues runs and licks that would have Clapton admiring him. Special mention should be made of the backing musicians--Edgar Winters' band--several of whom played with each artist. Particular note to the bassist, Koko Powell who did a phenomenal job supporting each band, quite a feat when considering the diverse musical styles represented.

Canned heat was fabulous, although the crowd was way too mellow and didn't give them the Kudos they deserved. I always enjoy Rick Derringer and have loved him since I was a teen, I also appreciated his reference to Jesus in Still Alive and Well, since as Christians we are to spread the Word and being a Christian does not mean we cannot Rock and Roll. Also, Pat Travers brought me back with Boom , Boom , Out go the Lights. I LOVED IT. My husband thought Edgar Winter was the best. It was great to see Ten Years After and the new lead was great, but no comparison to the late great Alvin Lee, especially on I'm goin' home. All in all, it was a great show and a wonderful way to spend a Wednesday evening. What a blast from the past and Rock and Roll and Jesus Christ are still alive and well !!!

Of the 5 bands, Canned Heat and TYA were great. Canned Heat played their "Best Of" songs, freshly and enthusiastically. I completely enjoyed their music Edgar Winter played Frankenstein - that was good. His Tobacco Road was great but toooo long. TYA were the prize. Leo Lions was spectacular on bass. I have never seen them live before, but I can only imagine how he played 40 years ago. The new guitar player played well, but no heart for the music he plays. Chic Churchill was not enthusiastic at all. Ric Lee was good. They played the songs that the audience expected, had a great sound and were definitely worth watching and listening.

I have not been to the Casino in quite sometime. I enjoyed the venue, despite the heat outside, it was not nearly as hot as I remember the Casino being in the past. The music was fantastic, legends of rock in my mind. Canned heat was musically sound. Pat Travers is as cocky as anyone...good stuff. Rick Derringer, truly excellent. The great Edgar Winter was outstanding and even though I was there to see Ten Years After, I believe Edgar stole the show...Tobacco Road was more than music...it was a vision. Ten Years After is an excellent band and I was lucky enough to see them in the hey day. I wanted to see Alvin Lee and I didn't want to see Alvin Lee. This kid was perfect... my advice to the band is let him lead, let him get cocky, he is as fast as Alvin... let that boy boogie woogie. I think TYA should have performed a bit longer

The music from all 5 groups was tremendous. It is a shame nobody was there. You missed a good show. The members of Ten Years After were by the concession area after the show signing and talking to everyone. Pat Travers was walking around through the crowd after his set being friendly with everyone.

This concert was fabulous. Canned Heat was great at the start and the concert kept rocking for three hours. While I never thought that I was that big of a fan of the song Frankenstein, it was arguably the best song I have ever seen performed in concert. Edgar Winter was great. The entire show was great! It was like Woodstock revisited 44 years later. We enjoyed all the performances, by Canned Heat, Rick Deringer, Pat Travers, Edgar Winter Group and Ten Years After. Perhaps I'm getting too old but the music was way too loud for the small venue. One of my guest had to place fingers in her ears and we were in the top section. Only recognized a few songs, too much time between groups. Canned heat and Edgar Winter were great.

I have been a fan of these blues legends (Winter brothers, Rick Derringer, Kim Simmons) for over 4 decades, and have attended many of their performances at a variety of venues. They are masters and never disappoint. However, there are a few things that struck me as out-of-sync at this particular performance at DTE Energy Theater on August 30. First, where was Leslie? He was included in the line-up, but did not appear. Nor, was any mention made about why he did not perform. We were 20 minutes late to arrive at our seats, so perhaps there was mention of this prior to the show. Second, what was up with the pre-recorded introductions for each act? Resembled Casey Kasem....cheesy! Third is how disappointing the quality of the sound was. Much of what should have been stellar guitar highlights by the legends was muddled and distorted. They deserve better, and so do their loyal fans.

what a major disappointment. I attend many concerts and was really looking forward to this one. Savoy brown guy and rick d. were ok. Edgar winter was amazing. That guy was all over the stage and can still play and hit the high notes. He was very impressive. Now the down side, West didn't show up. No announcement why, he just wasn't there. To me that's false advertising. Then the man I was waiting for came out, Johnny. I was in shock when I saw him. He was bent over , walking slow and had to have help getting into his seat. I knew he was getting older but I never expected this. It was very sad. Why would his management put him on stage like that let alone be the headliner? I only stayed for two songs and left. I didn't want to remember him looking and sounding like that. It was a damn shame. Edgar should had been the headliner and Johnny could have came out and did a couple of songs with his brother. Next time I see a concert come to town with the older guys, I'll make sure to research how they are now before I buy a ticket.

First off I'm a big fan of all the players that were part of the monsters of rock. Kim Simmonds played very good and I liked his songs. He also seemed to connect with the audience well and was not hung up on himself. RIck Derringer should get over himself. His playing is sub par and please return the face lift. Sorry Rick it is time to hang it up. No Leslie West. Bummer, Edgar was great. I could have listened to him all night. Johnny Winter, I saw a few months ago and he kicked ass. This show he was either sick, out of it or didn't care. I know we all have bad days, but he seemed lost. I'm a huge Johnny winter fan but his time on stage seemed shortened and SUB SUB par. I hope Johnny is OK and lastely god bless all the performers but it just wasn't worth the $76 per ticket.

Kim Simmonds was great-Rick Derringer had a (Thankfully) short set his voice was gone and he managed to avoid playing anything memorable-Edgar was awesome-as energized as ever and in great voice. His band who backed up everyone was tight. Johnny looked very frail and 20 years older than his brother but can unquestionably still play.Sat in a chair most of his set but held his own, Leslie West was a no show which really was a disappointment. Hope he is doing well. All in all a good albeit abreviated concert

Ken Simmonds and Rick Derringer opened in that order. Both played and sang great and were backed up by an outstanding Edgar Winter band. I actually liked these guys the best - always show up at concerts on time and don't blow off the opening acts. A little disappointed Leslie West couldn't show. Frankenstein was really cool seeing it live. Edgar winter played and sang great. The concert was a "10" until Johnnie came on only because the sound level was way too high - so much that I couldn't enjoy or decipher the music - actually left 1-2 songs early, which I never do. Otherwise I would have given the concert a 5 star. Everyone was on their game.

Kim simmonds opened the rock blues concert ,Ft Pierce ,Fl Kim set the stage for an unforgettable evening of music with his over the top performance. Hitting the stage with his trade mark vintage white Gibson flying V guitar he rocked the sold out house with an over the top performance. He showed his personal side by introducing himself as "that guy who opened" and took an audience vote for " hat or no hat" look. Kim plays with the same passion as he has since 1965. I would have paid to see any of these as a headline act. To see them in one venue was amazing. The evening started out with Kim Symmonds backed by the Edgar Winter Band. Those who arrived late missed some great blues! Next up - the All American Boy - Rick Derringer who still lends a patriotic bent and has shifted to a more religious bent with a variation of Still Alive & Well referencing Christ. Third up - The Edgar Winter Group complete with Frankenstein and Free Ride with Rick Derrnger joining in here and there. Finally, Johnny Winter and the Johnny Winter Band took the stage. Johnny was able to walk out under his own power and stood during a couple of songs. His voice was much stronger than last time I saw him and came through clear. His guitar playing was legendary. Edgar sat in on drums and Sax. Then Kim and Rick joined in. Unforgettable!

I came to see some of the finest and most creative Guitar players in history and of course Edgar Winters electrifying work. I was surprised, with the exception of Kim Simmons, to be only hearing a wall of distorted sound where most of the Guitar work of Derringer, West and Winter was undefineable from the mass of distortion which sounded as if every speaker was blown and all the vocals also were masked by the distortion making them unrecognizable. The evening closed abruptly with Johnny Winter seeming to not realize the show was over. Ending without explantion left eveyone looking around. Considering the thousands of shows these great players have done, I was surprised at how poorly assembelled the show was regarding Audio and the ending. In addition, how many time the guys have played together and Derringers producing talents for both Winters; to close without a legitimate ending or ensemble to make things memorable was a great dissapointment. Bit it woldn't have been heard anyway.

The show was awesome, great performances by Rare Earth, Vanilla Fudge and Edgar Winter. That being said, we didn't get our tickets as promised nor the prepaid parking pass before the show. Had to pay the parking fee again, because we weren't on the list as the box office person stated. There were people in our seats when we arrived and drink prices were outrageous, $10 for a 24oz glass. I had one beer and we upgraded ourselves to better seats. Got some good snapshots, enjoyed the music, but I would never go to another show at this venue. Ticket prices, fees and drinks are too high.

Took my son to show him some great music from some vintage performers. Edgar was great, but for me it was all about seeing the former drummer singer of Rare Earth being Peter Rivera. All the reviews I have read about him are true in that he has not lost a thing with his drumming and singing, still fantastic after all these years. We also got to meet him afterwards in the lobby, a class act all the way! Should have been in the Rock and Roll hall of fame years ago.

I bought the tickets excited to see Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter again. I was so sad when Johnny passed. and kind of regretted spending the cash for 5th row seats. As the concert came closer I was listening to some of my favorite jams as a kid like, "Get Ready Cause Here I Come", "Free Ride", "Tobbaco Road", "People Get Ready", and "You Keep Me Hanging On". This show did not disappoint. The Rare Earth set was amazing! My wife and I moved to the back cause our seat were to the side and lazy white folks sat on their ass. We moved to the back and danced our ass off. I forgot how good Vanilla Fudge was, I'd mention Carmine Appice but that would diminish the rest of the band, They were fantastic. The vocals on "People get Ready" were spot on and full of soul. Edgar came out and killed. I saw him in the 70's. His vocals are just as amazing as ever. I teach voice. I wish I knew how he does it,

I really was going to see Johnny Winter one last time. Was sad when he died unexpectantly. The show was OK otherwise for what it was. I was under the impression since it was supposed to be a "tribute" concert that the acts on the bill were going to play some Johnny material. Unfortunately, only Edgar did. Maybe this was supposed to be the case but since I really was only going to see Johnny I was just disappointed that none of this happened. And Edgar did to much skat for my taste. As far as the other acts they performed there material like champs never sounded better and had I been going to see them without Johnny that would have been fine. But this was not the case. I really wasn't sure about the show because I think of Johnny as a bluesman and rock and roller and these other bands I don't believe are in the same genre as he.

For a tribute to the late Johnny Winter, only 2 mentions of him were made. First was by brother Edgar, the other was by Carmine Appice about the great Johnny Winter. No pictures of the brothers as kids, teenagers, on tour together - nothing. The music was great - but it had virtually nothing to do with Johnny. Highway 61, Jumpin' Jack Flash and Johnny B Goode. What the hell does Frankenstein and Joy Ride have to do with the blues or Johnny? Rare Earth? Two tickets were $50 ($25x2). Fees are another $23+. Parking was $12 (CASH ONLY!). 70% over the ticket price for ancillary charges - are you kidding me?? BTW - the theatre was half empty. Seems this was put together after someone made a few phone calls to see who was in town. Very poor production.

I thought the show was good. It has been almost 40 years that I have seen some of these groups. The guitarist who accompianed the artists was amazing. Kim Simmonds had a short set. Could have stood more of him. Peter Rivera reminded me why Rare Earth was so cool in the day. Vanilla Fudge still kicking it. Carmine Appice, what a treat to see him again. But Edgar, Wow, who else can cut heads with a killer lead guitarist using only his vocal chords? Speaking of which the band was really tight. I've tried to look up members, to no avail. Guitarist was awesome and rhythm section was spot on. I may be getting old, but I'm so glad I got to know this music when music really mattered. And I'm glad I got to hear it live one more time. Sure missed Johnny though. RIP.

I have seen Johnny winter over 30 times the first being June 1, 1973 at Madison Square Garden. I missed him terribly being at this show. This show did him more than justice. Kim Simmons was disappointing . Never connected with the crowd and got a bit sarcastic about it. I was glad he was first and gone. Peter Rivera was next. Never realizing that the drummer was the singer for Rare Earth. He came out and looked like a business man and I thought uh-oh this is going to be a drag. The exact opposite happened. He sounded great, strong voice and great drumming chops. Got the crowd roaring, clapping and singing along with him, loved him. Vanilla Fudge was next and these guys delivered a set of music that was flawless, timeless and driving. Their harmonies were spot on and their musicianship was over the top. Mark's voice and keyboard playing was inspirational, Vince's voice and guitar playing were as moving as they were 47 years ago, and Carmine by far one of the greatest and influential drummers in Rock history played with the flair and style he always had and who knew he could sing so well. Flawless performance. Edgar Winter closed the show with a heartfelt and explosive set a music he dedicated to Johnny. He delivered and then delivered again and again and again. His band who had various member perform throughout the night with the other acts was phenomenal. The guitarist was inspirational, the bass player a virtuoso, drummer driving and the keyboard player was great! Go see this show!

The bass was so loud in the lower level that it fell let someone was pounding on your chest. The upper level bass level was much less but the level of the music made it sound like noise. We were able to get some ear plugs which really helped. It seemed like the stage hand and the sound guy didn't know what they were doing. The concert was okay. Not worth the money. Edgar Winter was great.

It was an amazing show. Too bad it was such a small audience. A lot of people really missed out.

There was a melancholy mood to the crowd at Waukegan's Genesee Theatre prior to the start of the 2014 version of the Rock N Blues Fest Sunday night. Of course the obvious answer to why, was the sudden passing of the headliner of the show Johnny Winter. You had a feeling it would take a supreme effort from everyone in the show to bring the quality up to the standard that Johnny would want. The opinion of this observer is the artists hit a ball that would have cleared Waveland Ave. at Wrigley Field. There were a few negatives to start with. I think the Management of the Theatre made some critical mistakes before the show even started. The first item that was missed was the lack of advertising. There was very little advertising in the papers(No notice in the "Weekend Section" of the Daily Herald) The second item was a BIG lack of respect for Johnny was putting on the Marquee Johnny Winters Tribute with a added s to his name( The error was changed just before the show started) The lack of advertising was a big reason of a house about half full. I am sure quite a few people returned their tickets after Johnny's passing. The third item that was troubling was that no one filled in for Johnny, such as a special guest ( Buddy Guy comes first to my mind) for at least one song. I can't believe that there wasn't an artist willing to come up to Waukegan from Chicago to honor the man that patented the Slide Guitar to what it is today. Now on to the show. The show started right on time, which is very rare for Rock And Blues shows anywhere. Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown came out and gave a rousing 1/2 hr. show with no encore(Which would be the rule for the night, even though the crowd called for one for every artist) I think the manager of the theatre had a hot date the way they pushed the artists through the show. Next was Peter Rivera of "Rare Earth" fame. The Lead singer and Drummer of one of the quinsential 70's rock bands. Again he played a Hard Driven 1/2 hr. set with all the biggest hits of the R.E. Catalog. He opened with "Big Brother" and galloped through the songs "Get Ready", Born to Wander, And finished with the huge hit "I Just Want To Celebrate" The interesting thing about the show was how they used the Bass player, and drummer and Rhythm Guitar player from the Kim Simmonds set.(More on this later) Next on the stage was one of the first Psychedelic bands of the 60's "Vanilla Fudge" Lead by Drumming Legend Carmine Appice, the band did a (surprise) - 1/2 hr. set that included their biggest hit "You Keep Me Hanging On" Closing the show was Johnnys younger Brother Edgar Winter. My first time seeing Edgar in years, was a Supreme Pleasure. The man was energized, anxious, and pumped to show that the people that bailed on the show that they made a HUGE mistake. Edgar's band was lead by an amazing guitar player who unfortunately, I didn't get his name. They did all the hits you would expect, "Free Ride", "Hangin Around", "Frankenstein", with great Vim & Vigor. The highlight for me was the "Outstanding Long Version of "Tobacco Road" As in all the other performances before them, there was no encore. I had never been to a concert with no encore. The crowd was stunned, and didn't want to leave. In closing, The show was excellent, but had a chance to be ALOT BETTER.

Love, love love Kim Symmonds - he was great - would have liked him to play longer; wasn't all that impressed with Peter Rivera or Vanilla Fudge but Edgar Winter is an amazing musician - awesome to see him and worthwhile enduring the 2 middle acts to see and hear him.

One or two original members of Savoy Brown, Rare Earth, Vanilla Fudge, and the full current Edgar Winter Band. Those old time rockers really put on a show and the back ups, which were the current members of the Edgar Winter Band, were terrific. They gave it their all. I want to give special Kudos to the Vanilla Fudge guys. They were very interesting, a little different from the rest, and very entertaining and musical. We also super liked the drummer for Rare Earth.

The tribute to Johnny Winter was a fantastic show! Loved every minute of it! Also love the intimacy of a smaller theatre and Genesee is so beautiful! Only thing that could've made it better would have been if Johnny Winter was there.....

The first act (which I did not know much about) Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown, played blues rock and performed a few cuts from his new solo album and then did one song from Savoy Brown. I was very impressed with his guitar playing. The second act was Peter Rivera (formerly of Rare Earth), who played the drums and sang a few of the hits from the Rare Earth days, Hey Big Brother, I Just Want to Celebrate among them and some guy in the crowd (probably drunk) yells something incoherent out in between songs. Third up was Vanilla Fudge, who performed a few songs from their 1967 debut album and performed "Shotgun" from a follow up. The last act of the night was Edgar Winter (younger brother of Johnny Winter, who recently passed away and was supposed to be the final performer). Edgar performed his signature hits "Frankenstein", "Free Ride" Tobacco Road" (a track he recorded with Johnny years ago), and he closed out his set with a few tracks from Johnny's career with and without Edgar. He is a fine performer in his own right. The show ran 2 hours and 40 minutes and I think I got my money's worth. Highly recommend everyone to check these guys out.

Opening acts went on much too long and were mediocre. Where was the Tribute to Johnny Winter? They barely mentioned him until Edgar Winter came on. A few days before the concert I spoke with box office staff who assured me that all performers were going to do/say/play something special in his memory. Poor volume control on the bass. Felt like the filling in my teeth were going to vibrate out of my mouth. The announcer's voice was totally garbled. Edgar was his usual brilliant, but the wait for him was endless between the boring opening acts and the insanity going on in the seats next to us during the entire concert. Drunk, pot smoking, screaming unruly people in seats next to us on our left and the row in front of us. We spent too much money on those seats to have the evening ruined. Where was the Bergen PAC staff assuring that ALL paying customers were not bothered by unruly, pot SMOKING, screaming drunks!?!?Stick to MPAC. Better managed.
