Elvis Costello

Elvis Costello

ELVIS COSTELLO IN CONCERT:He may be the "other Elvis," but when it comes to clever, madcap,  personality-drenched rock and roll, there is only one Elvis Costello. From his days in the British punk and new wave scene to his pioneering role in the rise of power pop, Costello has repeatedly broken the mold, appealing to both cult and mainstream audiences. On tour as a one-man-band in  2013, he displayed serious performance chops, making a backing band seem obsolete with beautifully stripped-down versions of classics like "Allison" and "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding." Hitting the road again in 2014, Costello will be treating fans to his acclaimed solo show as well as select dates with his band the Imposters.

Elvis is extremely entertaining. His banter is quite amusing, and he can be quite enlightening. This is one of his best, because, it is the most intimate concert. Not encumbered by additional musicians, he plays the more ballad-like songs that I enjoy most of his repertoire. He played a lot of the new songs he's writing for a new production/play/musical. I'm looking forward to see/hear it in the future.

I've seen EC in concert at least a dozen times, and this was the most oddball of them all, in terms of song selection, set design, and pacing. It was a ton of fun, and while it featured just a few of his signature hits (New Amsterdam, What's So Funny, and a few others) it was dynamic and compelling all the same. Elvis played piano a lot in this concert, and pretty well at that, and he rocked out with his opening act, Larkin Poe, who are a great talent unto themselves. The giant onstage TV set that featured select photos and videos from his life and career, and which showed a few videos as we waited for him to take the stage after Larkin Poe ("This Town" was perfect for its timely implicit reference to Trump, and my all-time fave EC song, "New Lace Sleeves") was fun, as were numerous props, like a rocking chair, bullhorn and megaphone. This was Elvis at his most playful, and experimental. A few new, unreleased tunes were compelling ("American Mirror" "The Uneasy Hour") as were some tributes to Dylan and Allen Toussaint. Overall, it was a fun, eclectic, thought-provoking show by a a veteran performer who I've never seemed more relaxed and joyful onstage.

Had never seen Elvis before and was excited to finally have the chance. I wasn't aware that this was a solo mostly acoustic show, but I enjoyed it regardless. I think with the Imposters or Attractions would have given it more energy but he still was very good. Quite the humorous storyteller as well. Great set list including Detectives, Less than Zero, Every day, can't stand up, mystery dance, Allison, pump it up, what's so funny,, green shirt, Played a few songs with the warmup girl duo Larkin Poe, which gave it some more punch, and his iconic voice just got better as the night went on. He played a full 2 hours. Venue- renovated Fox PA Center in Riverside CA was quite nice. 1929 building, classy comfortable and great sound and view from mid-mezzanine. Would definitely go back.

Elvis is always changing and this tour was no exception. Playing with the "Sugarcanes" this show had a country feel that was played to perfection with the new band members. Not only were they able to play the new record but also played old songs that fit there style. I would recommend that you go out of your way to see them If they come to you neck of the woods.

This was just a terrific alternative kind of Elvis show, not the typical Greatest Hits or New Album type of show. The band was tight and the selectiosn from King of America and the new album flowed beautiully.

The intense Mr Costello's performance at the Beacon Theatre (06/10/2009) was nothing short of brilliant. This blend of new & vintage songs performed in a way that gave the music new life and vitality. Elvis's vocal arrangements were spendid and with the accompanied musicians made the evening magical & mysterious.

I've seen Elvis about a dozen times over the years and he never fails to deliver. This was an "acoustic" set drawing from his latest release, Secret, Profane and Sugarcane and included one the show's highlights, a stirring renditions of How Deep Is the Red. Elvis also reached back through his large body of work and played just about everything you'd think would translate well to an all acoustic set including some you think might not such as, Everyday I Write the Book. All in all a fantastic show in one of NYC's most beautiful theaters.

If in 1977 you had told me that 30 years later I'd be loving Elvis with a large country/bluegrass ensemble, covering Merle Haggard tunes, I'd have been um, ah, skeptical. We're always up for whatever EC is doing in a given year -- but this was among the best concerts I've ever seen.

If you're an Elvis fan (which I am) then you'll enjoy this show. I've always appreciated his musical ventures down south exposing his & our country roots. As Elvis has worn many musical hats throughout his career, this show features Elvis at his country fried best. Obviously the new album Secret, Sugarcane & Profane is featured with well rounded performances from Elvis & the band. Since we were well behaved, Elvis even threw in a few of his classics for all to sing along to toward the end of the show. Like fine wine, Elvis continues to get better with age. His musicianship & stage presence prove how in command he really is & how comfortable he is with himself.

Costello's concert at the Beacon was a showcase to the genius that he is. Incredible performance by one of the most creative artists of today. The new arrangements for traditional Costello songs, such as Allison and Blame it on Cain, coupled with the songs from the new album worked exceptionally well. Costello is the King!

Not my preferred style of Elvis, the songs were like folk ballads, very chill and a little rockin'. Costellos voice was like honey in the air, very smooth on the ear. The Sugarcanes performance was very good, excellent musicians but again, not my preferred style. No drums, no electric keyboard, no punk or funk besides a few jerks and pointy, shaky fingers from Elvis, no funk - which is like the Bee's Knees for me! Maybe, in a few years at certain relaxing times I'll enjoy it more without the, "Bee's Knee's. Excellent show if you like Costello's honey smoothed voice. Good show for mellowed folky/rockin' music. Poor show for drums or punk/rocker, too cool Elvis.

The concert was amazing...Costello always puts on an incredible show. What I didn't like was the crowd. There were too many drunk hecklers at the show that were rude. Costello, however, did a great job, ignored them and kept playing. I will never go to AC to see a show again.

You never know what you might get with a "solo" show. Some artists feel compelled to tell stories as much as play music. At this solo show at Santa Barbara's historic Arlington Theatre Tuesday evening, Costello skipped the story-telling. He knew why the sold-out crowd was there, and he got right to it. And he started on time; too bad much of the crowd couldn't get there on time. The first two numbers were distracted a bit by a mumbling audience searching for seats with the help of flashlight wielding ushers. Costello wasn't affected by the crowd; he and his group of guitars on stage were on from the beginning. By the third number, the crowd got it and the show began to shine. With little rest between songs, Costello ran through a variety of numbers showcasing his ability to rock, to tell a musical folk tale, to sing a ballad and to entertain. The crowd grew eagerly restless for "Allison" and Costello delivered this signature number with a unique tone that surprised and pleased all. Through nearly 2 hours of solid music, Costello kept that theme running. He played several classics, and bringing to each an element of new-ness that showcased the artist's incredible musical creativity.

I truly had the best night of my life! Elvis Costello on stage with a mic and eight guitars. Just singing old and new songs in that incredible range. It was so beautiful that it brought tears to my eyes. On stage he was funny and charming and very generous with his many encores. Got to meet him afterwards. Took a picture and got a hug & kiss. He is such an amazing talent & so sweet. Check one off my bucket list!

Elvis Costello and the Sugar Canes played an amazing show Tuesday at the Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie. Elvis told stories and entertained between songs. Jerry Douglas on the dobro and Jim Lauderdale backing vocals were standouts, but all the Sugar Canes were great. He played old and new songs. It was a very intimate evening of acoustic music at it's finest.

Elvis Costello did it all Wednesday night at Nokia, and he did it without a single piece of percussion to be found. Great music throughout the night and you hardly missed the drumbeat. He's got some terrific musicians in his Sugarcanes band. The stuff was great, Elvis was funny and insightful and you could even forgive him for not playing a couple of his major "hits.'' Overall, it was the sort of experience you expect at a Costello show, which is to say it's not exactly what you expected. It never is.

I saw Costello at the Ryman June 16, 2009 and it was incredible. I had seen him there last year sometime and it was a completely different show. Last year he appeared with what seemed like his old the band the Attractions now called the Imposters and it was great. This year the line up is more Americana- no drums, stand up base, dobro, acoustic guitars, violin (fiddle), 7 or 8 musicians all playing multiple instruments it was just incredible how tight and yet fun the whole show was. I did not know a lot of the songs as well as I know his old catalog but it was freaking great. Jim Lauderdale sang backing vocal and he ,who is great on his own, really added a new dimension to the show. The audience went nuts as he kept playing one more and one more and more as we all stood and cheered one standing ovation after another.

The first time I ever heard EC was when I was about 12 years old. Some thirty years ago now. His music seemed strange then to a young boy's ears from southeast Georgia. It is hard to put into words how deeply impressed I have been by his music over the years. He just keeps producing musical masterpieces that sink deeply into my heart, and mind. His latest offereing, "Secret, Profane & Sugarcane" is a gift to us in the form of American Bluegrass music. Surrounded by an assemblage of very, talented Bluegrass musicians he weaves an eclectic tapestry that, in several instances touches on some 200 years of American history including subjects like the slave trade, civil war, and river boat journeys. "Secret, Profane & Sugarcane" contains beautifully crafted songs, but what is most impressive is the way in which he sings each word. Listen carefully, and I think you will know what I mean. Costellos' concerts at the Ryman are an almost annual event which I attend with eager anticipation. I always endeavor to meet him in the alley before the concert to put my arm around him, get my picture taken with him, and spend just a moment with a musical giant. I guess I don't really need to say that his concert at the Ryman this past June was another amazing experience, but I just did. Elvis! Don't stop coming back to the Ryman until we are both too old, and grey to make it! Thank you from the blond haired guy who's paintings you've signed in the alley, and who cheers the loudest, and enjoys your music, and concerts the most of anyone in the audience.

I love Elvis Costello, and was really looking forward to the concert at a good acoustic venue. Unfortunately, the mix was off-the instruments too loud and Elvis too quiet-it was difficult to hear what song was being played. I was sitting in Orchestra Row W center, so perhaps being under the overhand of the loge played a part in the noise hitting my seat exactly wrong, but the board was right behind me and I imagine the op could hear just fine. The changing video/still background was beautiful and creative. But it didn't make up for not really hearing the concert and the ringing ears after. One of the most disappointing concerts I've ever been to. Sorry Elvis!

First thing I loved is that the show started right on time. Greatly appreciated on a work night! Elvis Costello sounds as good live 25 years later as he did on the original Imperial Bedroom album. They played for a solid 2.5 hours straight and never missed a note. He still sings with the passion he had in his prime and you can feel the energy throughout the hall. The pianist was also amazing, sometimes having to run from the grand piano to the keyboard bank and back during one song. Elvis played at least 6 different guitars, as well as taking a turn on the piano. Back up singers were beautiful with giant voices. It all came together to form a perfect evening.

The sound mix for this show was terrible. I have been to hundreds of concerts and this was one of the worst mixes. I could hear the piano and the drums over everything else. Wow. Where do I start? 1) The sound system was awful. The engineer pushed it too far and it led to a distorted muffled sound that made it difficult to recognize the lyrics. 2) I understand that the concert was billed as a tribute to the Imperial Bedroom album. I get it. But why leave out such great songs such as Pump It Up, Veronica, Red Shoes, Peace Love & Understanding, Radio Radio, ... I wish I could get my time and money back. What a waste!

The sound crew was completely out to lunch! The bass drum was so high that it cancelled out the other instruments. The guitar tech for Elvis, was MIA when Elvis' guitar wasn't working. Took forever, and Elvis kept on signaling for another guitar, finally some sound came out of his guitar just at the same time the guitar tech finally came out and Elvis shooed him off. Basically, the sound sucked! Just one big mush!!!

He played maybe two songs that I knew throughout the concert and saved five good ones for the encore. By then I was bored to tears and ready to leave. Elvis Costello is an amazing performer well into his late career. His vintage band, full of Attractions and two amazing backup singers, looked as if they should be playing Live Aid. Elvis' vocals and rock'n roll guitar-playing continue to be tremendous. He definitely still has the fire. Plus, this was one of the most eclectic setlists I've seen him play and that includes the tour where he just spun a wheel of his songs and played whatever came up. Brilliant.

Bravo Elvis! I loved Elvis Costello as a "kid" exploring new wave music in the 80's and he still rocks it today. His gig at the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara was not a "comeback" but a generous display of talent and storytelling illustrating his incredible career. HIs voice is still strong, distinctive, passionate and charismatic! Elvis clearly enjoys performing as much as I enjoyed being entertained. I appreciated the acoustic genre and set, featuring a black and white TV, with his childhood and family black & white photographs projected from behind through the TV screen.

As promised, Elvis Costello shared a very Intimate and Informal evening with a Sold-Out crowd in a Beautifully Restored Theater. With just one keyboard, 5 guitars, one bull-horn, an assortment of effects pedals, and his surprisingly good whistling techniques, he entertained the crowd for well over 2 hours... only breaking to switch instruments or take a sip of bottled water. For being 58 years old, Elvis Costello plays one hell of a show. Was it totally flawless, no, not by any means, but did he cover a lot of his hits, yes. 97% of his show was him playing music, no stalling for time by making pointless conversation. I had a blast, but if you're expecting perfection, you're not going to be totally satisfied. The venue was awesome, any true Elvis Costello fan will have a great time.

Elvis Costello turned back the clock at Caesars Casino in Windsor, Ontario, Canada with his spinning songwheel, playing a set list that drew heavily from his first 4 albums. In fact, with the exception of a just a couple of later songs, a couple of covers and a nice tribute to Levon Helm ("Tears of Rage"), he pulled perhaps a dozen songs from My Aim is True, Trust and Get Happy. The songwheel was used sparingly to steer the direction of the show nicely and Elvis' voice, as always, remains as strong today as it has ever been. As a frequent Elvis concertgoer, this was well worth the money and was one of his better shows.

I knew from the start that the show would be fabulous when I looked at the stage with the huge spinning song wheel, the little lounge bar, the hammer game and of course the go-go dancers cage!!! He came on stage on time, played five fast paced songs one leading into the other while the go-go girl danced. He introduced the wheel and how contestants would be asked to spin and he would play what it landed on. Of course he was his usual smart, witty and sexy self!!! My husband and I go to see him at least once a year, we are always impressed with his talent and showmanship. We would actually see this tour again! The element of the audience participation and the wheel will keep it fresh.

The positive was this was just a fun time for everybody, ,Elvis, the band, the audience, the people he brought on stage, the go go dancers and probably the staff working the show. This was not the greatest Elvis concert musically, I thought the sound was sub par where I was sitting. As a drummer I LOVE Pete Thomas and thought it was the worst job micing his drums in my 10+ times of watching him perform. Only my second time at Humphries and last time I thought the sound was pretty good. Bottom line you never know what you are going to get going to see Elvis and that is what makes me love him and the band so much. Highlight for me was the "Brother can you spare a dime" song from the 30's. I heard it last month acoustically at a very small gig, it brought tears to my eyes then and did the same at this show. It was extra special because I knew what was coming as soon as he started to play it.

This show was so much fun! Everyone was on their feet from the first strums of "Pump It Up" and pretty much though the final encore of "What So Funny About Peace Love & Understanding." There was so much in between that it's hard to remember. The band is excellent and Elvis was so personable. After a several-song opener that included "Mystery Dance" and "Radio Radio", he started doing the schtick with people spinning the song wheel, with the first spin hitting "I Want You." It was lots of fun. And there was a dancer in a go-go cage, plus a dancing hostess who showed people on and off stage, etc. Lots of eye candy. People who spun the wheel were able to sit on a bar stool onstage and watch Elvis perform up-close. I can think of only one song I wanted to hear that they didn't play, and that was "Every Day I Write the Book," but it was on the wheel and it's just unfortunate that no one hit it. Elvis came out for several encores, including one where he did two old traditonal American songs solo with just his guitar. At one point in those, he walked away from the mic and sang to the audience au naturel. "Alison" was part of an encore, as were "Chelsea," "King of America," Please Please Me," and "Oliver's Army" plus several others. Elvis appeared to be having a great time, as were we!

I've attended shows in Michigan and Indiana during this current Revolver Tour. Mr. McManus has a body of work that is so large and consistently significant that it is difficult to represent in one evening. The spinning wheel changes from show to show, making each show unique, interactive, and a somewhat spontaneous experience.

Incredible performance, the most audience interaction I have ever seen at a performance, and I have been to plenty. The music was driving and poignant, the band was tight and Elvis was spontaneous, funny and as intense as ever. Thanks Elvis !

Elvis Costello & The Imposters- The Revolver Tour were amazing. It was like a concert and a game show put together since it involved a revolving songbook. Was hoping to play some songs that I expected. "I Loved The Show, I brought the shirt".

I have waited my whole life to see this man in concert - I love almost all of it - but the sound was just so awful - I was sitting in the orchestra not all the way back and to the right and so many of the songs I could not hear the vocals at all - and Elvis is someone you want to understand the words sung. I just felt that something was wrong and there was too much reverb on the guitar.

Elvis Costello is back in town for two sold-out nights at the Beacon Theatre and this time with the Imposters and the Wheel. If you go to his website you can spin the wheel yourself and listen to whatever song comes up. Stage left is the giant wheel and stage right is a go-go dancer cage. Next to the cage is a home bar with two barstools and a TV set to static. The curtain backdrop was an old TV (the ones that were real furniture) with a color test pattern. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had a great seat first row, center of the rear balcony. As always there was no opening act and Elvis and the Imposters came out sometime after 8:15pm. They went right into I Hope You re Happy Now Nick Lowe s Heart of the City Mystery Dance Radio Radio with one song after another with no breaks. Each song was re-worked and played incredibly fast. The go-go dancer was go-going it up in a cage with beaded strings as bars. She was wearing a short Pucci-like mini dress, white platform boots, and long hair with white headband. Elvis was looking very natty in a blue/gray suit, blue tie, blue shirt, and a gray fedora with blue band. The Imposters bassist Davey Faragher, keyboardist Steve Nieve (both with mandatory fedoras) and drummer Pete Thomas along with Elvis played like they were teenagers. All manic energy and heart. Elvis introduced us to the dancer (whose name I forgot) and she walked off leaving the cage empty for the spinners. Putting on a top hat and grabbing a cane, he explained the set design. The people asked to spin the wheel could then go into the go-go booth or sit at the lounge and enjoy a refreshment. The Wheel was made up of well-known songs, obscure songs, covers, and purple jackpots songs about love and death but not necessarily in that order. The jackpots had names like Girl and Heart and if one of those came up the band would play several songs with that word in the title. Choosing spinners from the audience was Xavier Valentina (an older gentleman in a tuxedo) and his great-niece Katerina Valentina (in an updated Western barmaid outfit). The first spinner got Black and White World. Next one got Flutter and Wow. Third person got Black and White World again and Elvis said it was a good song but we should spin again. This time he helped it along and stopped it on the purple Girl. We got This Year s Girl Girls Talk and the Beatles Girl. Again he re-worked the familiar I didn t realize I was hearing Girls Talk until about halfway through. But his version of Girl showed that he should be the only person to do Beatles covers. A couple was brought up who turned out to be brother and sister. Elvis gave them each a spin and we got Alison and Veronica. He decided to do Veronica first and then he did such a beautiful rendition of Alison, which ended with lyrics from Wind Cries Mary Over the Rainbow and Somewhere all done to the tune of Alison somewhere a king has no wife somewhere over the rainbow birds fly over the rainbow, why can t I? somewhere there s a place for us So beautiful. So beautiful. Elvis decided to go into the audience himself (by the way he said those of us in the balcony weren t safe but apparently we were very safe) and brought up Mike Myers wearing a Joe Jackson t-shirt. Myers was adorably shy and while talking with Elvis or sitting off to the side while the band performed God Give Me Strength he kept taking photos with his iPhone. In fact he was posting/texting as he was walking up on stage check his Twitter page. For this song (as for a few others) Elvis walked into the audience and sang. Next we got Everyday I Write the Book and The Long Honeymoon. There was another stop on a jackpot (thanks to Elvis help) and we got Time. Strict Time Man Out of Time Next Time Round and Rolling Stones Out of Time. This time Elvis danced with the woman. There was a very short intermission and Elvis reappeared wearing a plaid jacket and a small-brimmed plantation hat. The first set was acoustic Elvis and at some points he walked away from the mic and we just got his glorious voice. You could have heard a pin drop in that theater it was so quiet for those moments. We got A Slow Drag with Josephine and Jimmie Standing in the Rain. Elvis went to the keyboards and was joined by the Imposters for Pump It Up another song with changed timing. At the end I heard the tune for Ray Charles Busted and couldn t hope for but Yes! he played Busted. When I was a little girl and was sick and would lie on the sofa, my father would play his records and tell me about the artists. I learned about Nat King Cole and Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and so many others. But one of my favorites was Ray Charles and Busted. They finished with God s Comic. Another short break for the encore now Elvis was wearing a gold lamé jacket and leopard print fedora. They did bring up another spinner but Elvis ignored the spin and listened to the audience. We also got a little drama with the go-go dancer and Katerina when Katerina went into the booth to dance along and the go-go dancer was having none of it and stalked off. Elvis gave us (I Don t Want to Go to) Chelsea Waiting for the End of the World Watching the Detectives Clowntime is Over The Who s Substitute (proving again that he s not only a brilliant songwriter but a brilliant interpreter of other s work) (What s So Funny \u2018Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding. The show ended at 10:40pm. Not much I can add to that.

I had my heart set on this concert as I have never seen Elvis in concert before. Unfortunately, he used the songbook wheel to pick out the setlist. I would have been happy just to hear the big hits along with material from his latest release. However, this was not the case and although some of the great oldies were played, I found the concert to be rather boring. I hate it when that happens. If I had see him last year, I would have gotten what I wanted. I can't blame him for not playing the same stuff over and over again.

It was great to see Elvis in action again. His voice was great and the act was fun. HOWEVER -- either the Fox just cannot handle music or the sound engineer was horrible -- or both. Unless Elvis was doing a solo (which did sound fantastic), the bass and drums created a large muffled cloud over the vocals, guitar and organ. Making it louder doesn't make it better -- try replicating good sound first, guys. Sheez.

I was at both Elvis Costello shows at the Oakland Fox Theatre on May 8 & 9 and both were incredible! I am biased as he is my favorite but he was in top form and with each spin of the wheel there was a great assortment of his songs throughout his whole career, with the great wild card options where he would do a theme set such as all songs with "girl" in the title or songs with colors in the title, and if you are familiar with his work, you will know what gems those are! He played for a solid 2 and a half hours and ended the show with everyone feeling that he was so generous with his time and fan appreciation.

Fabulous show. Amazing for all the "long time" fans. Kick off for the Revolver tour with the "spinning wheel" and lots of musical surprises - including a "blues" version of Pump It Up! He opened with "I Hope You're Happy Now" and moved on to the favorites, covers, and a couple of obscure songs - Wow! Like; "Shot With His Own Gun" - all the while inviting people on stage to "spin the wheel" and be part of the show! It was like a dream! The Imposters are amazing and if you get to see Elvis in 2011 - it will be well worth it! Slow Dance With Josephine was fantastic! It was all good!

I was so impressed w/ the total professionalism these guy gave the audience .....too bad some members of the audience could not reciprocate......I know I'm not the only person who noticed the obvious and rude loud talking throughout the concert...... I kept telling myself that these artist are most likely used to this kind of behavior from time to time.....but I was hoping Richmond ,Va would have been different. So now that I got that off my chest, ....Elvis's hurkie jurkie moves are still HOT! He totally knows how to captivate you. I especially like the way his elbow would perpetually spin around as he strummed his guitar strings....ALL the Sugarcanes were total virtuosos too; the combination of instruments was sublime.. all in all my kind of music!

Elvis finally showed up- 30 minutes late-sang without much passion, but managed to leave the stage early. We clocked him at about 1 hour for his performance. We were tired of his antics and left. He did come back for an good encore which we heard as we drove away. It is starting to look like this concert series doesn't care much about quality.

Elvis Costello visited Nashville and played a wide repertoire from his long career. A giant 50s looking television played videos of Elvis' earlier hits. Then following the opening act, Elvis came out and played solo and acoustic versions of his work, mostly newer things. He was joined by the opening act, Larkin Poe, for a few songs and then brought out the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for the final six songs. I enjoyed the show, but would much prefer to see Elvis with the Attractions or the Impostors. He butchered "Everyday I write the Book."

Elvis continues to demonstrate what a true artist he is. His rapport with the audience while introducing his songs brought more to the show than the usual concert experience. His voice is still strong and clear, and always emotive. His guitar playing can be full of frenetic energy and, at times, beautifully subtle. The big surprise to me was a "new" act traveling with him on this tour: The fabulous Larkin Poe. Who would think a duo would be such a powerhouse of rock and roll. They bring spectacular lead vocals and harmonies with really impressive guitar licks between the sister's lead and lap steel guitars. They are my new band to follow. Their accompanying him at the end of the night brought new magic to a number of his songs during the 40 minutes or so of encore.

Elvis delivered a powerful, bohemian performance. In the two and a half hour show he covered a wide scope of material that included many of the songs that we all know, like; Allison, Watching the Detectives, Peace, Love and Understanding and Veronica. The highlight of the show for me was his intense rendition of Deep, Dark Truthful Mirror.

My first time for concert at the Ryman. LOVED it! Elvis has a wonderful set, and really enjoyed hearing the stories before each song. He had a video of his dad singing, that was awesome. The entire show was acoustic, which could've been really cool and intimate. And he's a great story-teller, which added to that vibe. But his harsh guitar sound, frantic parts and vocal style just don't work together without a band. (The piano/vocal portion was slightly better.) And we bought the tickets in part to see Preservation Hall Jazz Band. We left 3 songs into what we thought was the encore, and PHJ seemed to have been a no-show. I heard that they eventually came out to back him up. Why would you leave a band like that backstage for over an hour and a half? Could've been SO much better if he integrated them into more of the show.

First of all, it was a Monday night concert. I don't often go out on Monday nights, but I thought that the Elvis Costello concert would be energetic and fun. Arriving at The Ryman and seeing the stage sets-up, with a giant TV playing Elvis Costello videos, I was pretty sure that the concert ahead was just what I needed for a Monday night. Alas, although Elvis sounded good, it was just him on the stage, and he had reworked his songs so that they were mellower. Didn't sound bad, but just....different....and not what I needed or wanted. We left before the end of the show.

The opening band was horrific, Larkin and Poe. Then out came Elvis. Well he did not have a band. Told some really cool stories about his life and music but he is just not good enough anymore for a one man band.
