Run the Jewels

Run the Jewels

RUN THE JEWELS IN CONCERT:Underground hip hop supergroup Run the Jewels finished out 2014 as one of the year's biggest breakout acts, reaching both a critical and commercial high when their acclaimed sophomore album Run the Jewels 2 reached the Top 10 on the US Rap Albums chart. The record featured the unstoppable combination of producer El-P's insanely bombastic beats and rapper Killer Mike's deadly flow, and it served as a rally cry for hip hop lovers around the world looking for something fresh, new, and exciting. The duo's aggressive rhymes and next-level beats are even more impressive at their live shows, where they deliver take-no-prisoners cuts like "Get It" and "Oh My Darling Don't Cry" with a raw energy and effortless swagger that make good on all the hype. As they exit the stage after one of their epic performances, one thing is left abundantly clear: Run the Jewels are gunning for the hip hop crown, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop them.

This is a concert I'll tell my kids about! It was that damn good. There was so much energy in the crowd, and not to mention that the fact DJ Qbert and Flatbush Zombies opened up for them was amazing as well.

I go to a lot of concerts. This was by far one of the best. Top 3. Best crowd I've ever been in though. No one was filming. No one was pushing their way to the front. Awesome show.

The opening acts sounded fine, but when RTJ came on stage, the sound engineer seems to have put the bass up to eleven and then mentally checked out.

to preface: i'm not typically a rap fan. i came across RTJ's music from an ex of mine and was completely hooked. so when it came time to see them live, i jumped at the opportunity. i've been to many a rock/metal show in my day, so i expected it to not be my scene... i was skeptical due to the fact that my idea of rap shows meant standing around and bobbing your head to the music while a rapper stands there and just spits bars. i was pleasantly surprised. killer mike and el-p have more energy than a bunny rabbit on red bull. and the crowd... my goodness. when the first song hit, everyone started bouncing up and down and rapping along to a song from an album (i believe they opened with "talk to me"?) that was only released 3 weeks prior. it was almost a spiritual experience seeing these two. they're funny, charismatic, and incredibly talented. their live energy is unmatched, and is entertaining to both the hardcore hip-hop head, and the casual listener (like myself). if you get a chance (and the show isn't sold out already)... go. GOGOGOGO.

The hour and a half wait of the DJ and his "friend" was terrible. Once Run The Jewels actually came on, it was awesome. 45 minute show for 1.5 hours of filler though! I would have finished the show at Boston Calling, finished my drink at the bar, THEN come to see RTD had I known they would go on so late!

The concert was insane, but honestly it was too loud for my taste. It was honestly pretty painful. My ears were ringing for 2 days. It really was amazing though. Run the Jewels had a ton of energy and were a lot of fun. I'd go back any day.

Venue is interesting because it is small but because it is Killer Mike and El-P, they made the place explode. People there were awesome, sound was great (borderline too loud), good times were had by all.

After pretty good opening performances by Despot and Ratking, not a soul could truly grasp the energy that was to come from the crowd when the beat for Run the Jewels dropped. From then on it was a tremendous performance from some serious entertainers who knew how to get a crowd going.

I don't attend that many concerts but Run the Jewels was an absolute blast. While the show started an hour later that initially announced (first act started at 10 rather than 9), that didn't matter too much. Despot opened the show and his 30 minute set was fantastic. He interacted with the audience, joked about his long-awaited debut album and did a really good job to warm up the crowd. However, the second act, Ratking, failed to maintain that momentum. If you google the group Ratking, you'll get conflicting info. Are they are four man group? Three guys? Well, only two members of Ratking actually showed up on the stage. While the producer Sporting Life had some great beats, the vocalist Wiki just felt out of it. He didn't really perform with much energy and his lack of it, quickly drained the room. Thankfully though, once RTJ hit the stage, the energy returned and it was incredible. RTJ2 is one of the best albums of 2014 and Killer Mike and El-P delivered a fantastic show. They too interacted with the crowd and gave us more than we'd expect.

From the moment Killer Mike and LP took the stage the bombardment of sound from the RTJ set was un fathomable ! They had the entire Bill Grahm civic auditorium on their feet the entire time. From opening the set with "talk to me" through the first few sounds that concluded with "call tickettron" everyone in the EXTREAMLY hot boxed house knew this was going to be a good show !

Shout out to Gangsta Boo, Gaslamp Killer, Cuz, and all other opening artist you guys rocked that sh#t hard like granite!!! Sure we all got kinda close shoulder to shoulder, but I think we all expected that being at this show. No other complaints.

All the artist's were on point. The Venue sucks though. As said before get there early and close because you won't be able to see the performers the way the Venue was built. I can't speak for the bar or anything else. It gets tight know what you're getting into.

Run the Jewels is very positively engaged with the crowd and very attentive and engage actively and have a lot of energy. I didn't like it as much as the first concert I've seen of them beut that's only because I like the second album better. There was a ton of a weed among hte crowd and it made me nauseous but other than that it was pretty cool, especially the giant fist and gun.

Overall, this show was phenomenal. The Southside Ballroom is great and the sound system was more than up to par to handle the level of bass that filled the venue. Logistics of getting into the venue and navigating the general admission area, bar and restrooms was only impeded by the sheer size of the crowd. Denzel Curry opened the show with high energy and great production. His vocal delivery was rapid and incompetent at times but he held his own as the show opener. Danny Brown initially brought a different dynamic as his opening song was quite relaxed but halfway through his set he showed the crowd why he was not only opening for Run The Jewels but also why he was featured on their most recent album. His energetic performance and popular songs had the entire crowd in sync with him until the last note played. RTJ hit the stage as the main event and displayed a camaraderie between EL-P and Killer Mike that is overly apparent on their albums. The two artist fed off each other during the songs and in between, joking and talking to the crowd the whole time like we were all old friends. There was not a bad moment to the night other than when RTJ played "Hey Kids" and didn't invite Danny Brown back to the stage for an encore performance on his verse of the track. If you are a fan of lyrical artists and unique production it would be wise to give any of these acts a listen. Once you do it would be hard to stay away from their show. Unless you just don't like music.

One of the best rap groups today. Killer Mike and El-P are essentially what hip hop should sound like, and live up to. They opened with a great DJ, and couple of other lesser known rappers but once they got on stage, it was noting but hands in the air and crowds screaming. Sometimes you couldn't make out everything they were saying, but if you're a fan, it doesn't matter. I'll see this croup any day of the week.

This was my first time seeing RTJ and they did not disappoint. The on-stage chemistry and love is real, and Mike and Jamie come across as BFFs who are surprised and humbled to have finally hit it big. I have a feeling this tour will be talked about for years to come, and if you are a RTJ fan, you need to see it. Their music is as vital and in-your-face as anything out there. Gaslamp Killer, one of the openers, is worth checking out, he reminds me of a muppet on speed, plus he provided a tour through US hip hop styles via an eight-bit Nintend unit.

Too many opening acts. RTJ was late getting to the show so some of these opening acts came back to throw water bottles at the people in the front row. They were fun when finally started, but also could barely hear them with the mix. I'll stick to their recorded music from now on, unfortunately.
