La Roux

Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, Jackson's style changed as she got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid had gone to school with Rollo from Faithless, and the two recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Rollo's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb.

La Roux at Terminal 5 was my second La Roux show (so I knew what I was getting into). La Roux's performance and stage presence were fantastic. She did her new songs (which are excellent) and her songs from her first album. The venue was great (although the walk from the subway was a tad long). After the show, I waited outside and got La Roux (Elly) to sign my Trouble in Paradise LP. This brought the show to a higher level, but even without meeting her, I had an excellent time again.

Excellent lighting, great seats, pretty good sound quality. I'd definitely crank the vocals a bit more - I always have trouble in the Fox hearing the vocals from the balcony. (Passion Pit was the worst! I had no idea what song they were singing until the audience joined in from downstairs!) La Roux herself chose a great combination of old and new numbers, and she ROCKED it. I love that she has only one dance move!

We saw La Roux on Saturday night, and it was fantastic! The sound was crisp, the light show was stimulating, and the band really put there ALL into the performance. The drummer was so fast, and La Roux herself was quite something...wearing all those coats! As with any electronica type band, you have to expect a certain element of pre-recorded tracks, synths, and beats. I'm pretty sure a lot of vocals were dubbed too. But, on second listen, I'd say that La Roux herself was actually live. I'm sure whatever is canned for a reason, of which I don't want to know the answer to. But I don't know anything...I have no idea what's real or not anymore. What's important is seeing the band live, feeling the energy, and hearing the amazing songs coming from the speakers. And who cares if they are actually making those sounds live right then at that very moment? I'm drinking a vodca soda and dancing to the beat and looking at her flappy red hair and flailing big winter coats and i'm super happy about it. You want another vodca soda? ;-)

As usual Terminal 5 was a mess, but also as usual, their engineering was good and the crowd wanted to dance. It was a great show! Went after a long bad day and wasn't really expecting to have nearly as much fun as I did. Those are definitely the good shows, when they take a bad day and make it awesome. Wish La Roux had shows more often. Surprisingly early show for a Saturday, but it was kind of just what I needed.

So good! Elly Jackson is an amazing performer and the crowd was just right. Everyone was dancing and having a good time, exactly what a great show should be. La Roux has been one of my favourites since their (now her) first album released, and the way Elly vibes off the crowd was enjoyable to see and experience. Definitely helped that the group at the Fox was more chill than other venues and artist's shows I've attended in the past.

Sound was great, Elly engaged with the crowd, not as much between-song banter as I would have liked, but all the songs were performed well. Since it's still early days in her North American tour, it was clear she and the band were trying some stuff out (the SoCal shows were a bit different, with Elly on guitar for some of "Uptight Downtown"). All in all, it was a very tight ship. Loved it, would see her again.

We saw La Roux back in 2010 when she played the sold out House of Blues. Great show but no comparison to this show. Elly Jackson's vocals were amazing. Her pitch was perfect and the band had a lot more energy. The songs off the new album were just as enjoyable as her old stuff, and the crowd were well familiar with all the songs and danced along. They played a nice long set doing some numbers we had hoped they'd do. Definitely check out La Roux if you have the chance and check out the new album. Let Me Down Gently is haunting.

La Roux was wonderful! Elly Jackson sounds live just as the recordings. It was high energy the whole time, there wasn't a boring moment. The band all appeared to be enjoying themselves-wonderful showmanship. This far exceeded my expectations and if I had the chance I would go again! Amazing performance. Nice venue (clean and well maintained). Cool Lighting. There was a bit of a wait before the performance started, but they well made up for it.

I had seen her in concert previously in February which was great. I brought 3 friends with me this time, and La Roux had mentioned that this was her last show after touring for 2 year. Well, she rocked it! she sounded better live than ever before and she poured herself on that stage. For the past few months before the concert I had told my friends how great she was in concert and once I took them to this show, they were thanking me so much because they knew it was going to be a great show going in but it turned out to be so much better. We all want to see her again next time she comes to New York.

Having picked up cheap tickets for this concert, I was initially not expecting much from a band who was famous for one catchy song in the US. However, my friends and I were excited about seeing a concert at the House of Blues, and were open to seeing what La Roux could do on stage. We were greatly surprised at the fun we had there! Not only was the band tight and limber, but Elly, the lead singer, brought style and substance to her performance, at once coy and interactive with the audience. I enjoyed the different versions of new and old material performed: ballads such as "Let Me Down Gently" were turned in dance-rock anthems; new material such as "Uptight Downtown" and "Kiss and Not Tell" were given rockier, edgier treatments; and older favorites such as "Tigerlily," "In for the Kill," and encore show stopper "Bulletproof" were played with energy and reverence for the crowd. As you can imagine, the audience was spent after the tight and festive 75 minute set. I left the concert wanting more . . . which is not always an experience concert goers get to enjoy. Hope the new album meets expectations!

We flew from Los Angeles to see La Roux perform in Philadelphia. I was unable to go to her shows on the West coast so this was my only chance to see her. The show was easily the best part of my trip. Actually the best part was when we were walking back to our hotel after the show and a car pulled up and Elly Jackson got out of the car. Was a really intimate show, very very good, kind of short for me, but with the right set of excellent songs, the crowd was kind of anxious because this event was suspended two month ago, and she thanks to the crowd for being patient enough to wait for her show, that was re schedule for Nov. 1th. She didn't smile too much, but at least was very kind with the crowd, and we could tell that she was very very amazed with the crowd reaction, I bet she was not specting that from such a small audience.

Elly Jackson was awesome even with a cold. The audience wasn't as into it as I would hope so I think the show would have been even better if the crowd was more energetic. Even in the pit I saw people awkwardly standing with their arms crossed as though they were in an art gallery, not realizing they were actually at a alien 80s style metropolis inspired concert. I was hoping that when Elly announced they were performing a cover it would be thier rendition of Farewell to the fairgrounds (originally by the White Lies), but instead they did a Stones classic, Under My Thumb- which they totally made all their own.

Elly was amazing! She came out and told us she's been "fighting a cold" which I assumed since she has been cancelling a lot of concerts lately. Ppl on facebook were being haters, but she put on a great show! The venue was wall to wall packed and I think the energy from the audience pushed her to get crazy. I saw La roux perform in San Diego last night and let me tell you it is an experience I will not soon forget. The night started with a very good dj that set the mood just right. Anticipation built to a fever pitch until La Roux in all her glory came out on stage. The lighting and effects were thrilling to say the least, especially the designer tv screen at the back of the stage. La Roux's energy was brilliant and her costume matched the scene to a T. The concert was absolutlyy amazing- the venue was really nice and her preformance was like nothing I have ever seen before. Elly Jackson herself is extremely talented and has an excellent voice live, as well as her other band mates. Although the venue only have one exit and it could seem a little crouded the staff was friendly and helpful. Unfortunitly I dont really have anything good to say about the opening act, they were just horrible. But La Roux's light show was very impressive. Elly showed excellent showmanship and energy even when she talked to the croud about how her parents were in the house and tid bits like that she seemed like sure a sweetheart.

I got a standing room ticket for La Roux, which was tough since we had to stand for a total of 4.5 hours but IT WAS WORTH IT. I have also been a pretty big fan of electronic/techno music, and because the instruments are digital, I don't have high expectations for live performers of the genre. However, after seeing La Roux, they have set the bar incredibly high. My friends and I arrived at the Ogden at 7:30pm, and waited in line until they opened the doors at 8pm. We were lucky enough to claim our spot in the front row stage-left. After a rather mediocre performance by Boyhollow from 8:30-9:45pm, La Roux came on at 10pm and played the songs in the setlist until 11pm. Elly Jackson was absolutely amazing live. Her voice is stunning and so unique. She brings a quirky energy to her performance, and she radiates passion. It's hard to keep your eyes off of her. She seems like such a genuine person, humbly saying thank you after ever number. Definitely recommend this concert to anyone.

I brought my 2 daughters (10 & 13) and their 2 best friends (11 &13) to the show. This was their first concert ever! We were almost next to the stage and saw everything so up close! I saw her at her first NYC show at Terminal 5 in July and it seemed appropriate to see her in her last show of her tour and boy, was I not disappointed. Opening acts Francis and the Lights brought me back to 80s and John Hughes' films and Far East Movement brought everyone to the dance floor. La Roux kicked arse...she never missed a beat as she was singing her high notes and dancing mad on stage. "Tigerlilly", "in for the Kill" and "Colourless Color" made me feel all numb and tingling! her cover of Rolling Stones' "under my Thumb" had everyone jumping on their toes! And of course, "Bulletproof" brought the house down. Just amazing!!!

This was the second time I saw La Roux at Terminal 5 and it was lots of fun both times. The music doesn't sound the greatest live, I admit, but it sounded good enough to please the crowd. It was clear that Elly appreciates the crowd and the crowd was so into it that it added to the fun. It was great to hear the crowd go wild for such favorites as "I'm Not Your Toy", "In For The Kill", and one of my favorites, "Colourless Colour". La Roux had lots of energy on stage and were clearly enjoying themselves, and the crowd had lots of energy too, which I think makes a really fun show. They also sang their great cover of the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb". Of course, the house came down over "Bulletproof"! The only drawback was that it was too short-- they could have sung all the songs from the entire "La Roux" album, but skipped a couple tunes.

The overall show was lively and simple enough that it was about the music. You could tell La Roux was not skimping, and was giving her all to entertain and keep the crowd amped. She did not disappoint, but you could tell she was tired. She admitted as much, and there were a few times that it was hard to hear her singing the lyrics, seemed like her voice was strained. I am glad that I went and would go to see another La Roux show, it just has to be at a better venue, I want to be able to really dance and enjoy her show. The venue made it difficult to fully enjoy the show, to me this was a waste of her energy.

Light show was pretty great specially when La Roux came onstage and it was an overall awesome show, wish it lasted longer though. My friends and I left saying we had never been to a concert so good - and between us we've been to many: Muse, Mariah Carey, etc. We had so much fun and will not forget the amazing time we had and how fabulous La Roux, Far East Movement, and Francis and the Lights were

If you ever have the chance to see La Roux, DO NOT PASS IT UP!!! The entire band was fabulous but Elly is mesmerizing!! I couldn't take my eyes off her, she has more energy than any artist I have seen perform (and I've seen 100's). She was better than I ever expected... I'm a convert and a La Roux worshiper! GO SEE HER!

Terminal 5 was an average venue but fun nonetheless. Far East Movement got the crowd pumped up and La Roux performed her entire album. Her voice was very true to her recorded sound. She has an unusual dance style but she definitely engaged the crowd.

Following one of the worst opening acts I've ever heard (Francis and the Lights), we were treated to a fun-but-cliched group (Far East Movement) before the main even. La Roux played a predictable but fun set despite Elly Jackson's apparent weariness. It took the crowd a long time to warm up, but the end of the show was energetic enough.

great performance. was mad that it got canceled in the summer. cannot wait to hear new music. she is a dynamic performer and it was great to see her in the small venue. i would definatly see her again if/when she returns (should also include that i know this is not a solo act and her companions on stage were awesome as well).

the artists performances were amazing, however, the wait times between each band was too too long. like 45 minutes between far east movement and la roux...

Despite months of waiting on the rescheduled concert, La Roux delighted the audience of the Trocadero. Well worth the wait, the sold out show featured multiple opening acts: DJ Sammy Slice, Francis and the Lights, and Billboard-chart giant Far East Movement. Overwhelming cheers filled the venue as the wonderfully dressed Elly Jackson and her band members began their set. Utilizing the small scale of the stage to its fullest potential, La Roux performed in front of shaped-screen which often used projections to compliment the songs. The beautifully androgynous front-woman pranced about the stage and proved her vocal capabilities live. The final song, Bulletproof, was more of a communal sing-along than an individual performance by the singer. Elly extended her microphone out to the audience, which barely needed the amplification. Considering many of the evening's guests purchased tickets as far back as the end of spring, La Roux proved one thing very well: good (electro-pop) things come to those who wait.

The concert was held in a small venue of 1100. Elly was sincere and gracious. Her voice is as angelic in person as on the air. She kept it simple which made the experience about her music and her voice, not about the "show." The extra added surprise of Far East Movement stopping by and singing three songs (including "Like a G6") made the event a huge success. Our son found La Roux 2 years ago before they were in the US, he happens to be autistic and he knows talent. We have been singing Bullet Proof in our house for years! Elly signed a poster for him and made his world...thanks La Roux, you are a class act and the Tracodera in Philly is a great venue.

Everything about this show was amazing from the music they played before the show even started, to Far East Movement's hype show before La Roux, and of course La Roux. Absolutely epic.

This concert was fantastic! Perfect Venue for her and her followers! Sound was great and so was the lighting! Beers at the Culture Room were around $6 bucks and Black Label on the rocks $9 bucks. Tickets were only $18 and I have to say it was well worth the drive from Kendall!
