Stanley has been a premier bass player since the 70's. His performance on Friday did not let me down, it was an amazing show. He brought a few young cats with him that were just monsters on their instruments. Loved the show.

I grew up listening to Stanley Clark and this was finally my chance to see him live. For the most part is was good. He is really pushing new young artist but I think the drummer took over. He had about 3 small solos and the a 15 minute solo towards the latter part of the show. His intensity didn't change so the solos were consistant with his normal style. It was great if you're into drummers, but I was there for Mr. Clark. Piano guy from Georgia was great. Would have bought a CD by him that night! Would have like to seen Stanley plat the Bass guitar more than the Bass.

thank you Stanley for a wonderful concert. I was blown away. your music carried me to a place where no worries or problems existed. I was lucky enough to have front row center seats and it was a personal and up close experience. Mr. Clarke was totally and deeply involved in the music and gave a performance I will never forget. an added bonus was his good humor and positive attitude. also have to mention his drummer, who was Billy Cobhamesque.

I remember when Stanley Clark hit the music scene with a splash in the 70's. He was an excellent musician whose jazz group was also well received on rock radio stations as a creative and compelling alternative to normal rock. Expecting more of this great music at this concert, I was greatly disappointed to find that even the songs that started with some jazz influenced music, quickly degenerated into monotonous pounding on the drums and base...very little interesting changes or creativity....too many mimutes of torturous intense volumn. And it seemed like the exact same rat tat tat...rat tat tat...rat tat tat was used on too many songs. For the long "whip the audience into a frenzy" portion of every song, they might as well have just recorded 3 seconds of someone pounding on a drum, and then played it 500 times on a loop with a technician slowly turning up the volumn until it maxed out. PLEASE Mr Clark, your fans are discerning people looking for quality music....not just loud frantic noise. I expected much better from you.

This was a very enjoyable show at this location. I ve seen Stanley Clarke before and have never been disappointed. Stanley Clarke surrounded himself with fresh young energy that captured the audience from the beginning. The young pianist, Beka Gochiashvili, was amazing tickling the ivory at the age of 17. He was very emotional and expressive tantalizing the audience with his quick rhythms to maintain the beat with Stanley & Mike. Mike Mitchell exploded on the drums with his powerful eclectic style. His youthful age of 19 was noted as he continued commanding display of speed on the drums. Stanley continued to play at his imaginative and fast pace while providing an amazing youthful and exciting experience. He encapsulated us tapping the wood on the base and quickly plucking the strings to create a jive unforgettable. The trio shifted the mood from rhythmic jazz to more complex and stunning tunes smiling and enjoying themselves as they performed. The audience was encapsulated and jubilant by the tight pulsating tempo between the musicians. Stanley Clarke continues his legacy to pioneer fresh paths for us to enjoy. Thanks Stanley.

The concert was nice .... I gave only 3 stars because there could have been more Stanley and less drummer & pianist. The other musicians were great but the constant and long solos took away from the main act -- Stanley. Also, I would have preferred Stanley play the electric bass a bit more. Lopsy Lou was way too short and not distinctive enough.

Stanley Clarke performed about 90 minutes straight from start to finish of his show. His show included two very gifted young artists. The pianist, discovered by none other than Condeleeza Rice, was just 17 years old from the Republic of Georgia. The accomplished drummer was 19 years old. The evening of jamming and Stanley's bass guitar skills brought back great memories of the 70's and 80's. The one missing instrument that was needed was a lead guitar player. Perhaps this was a statement by Stanley to pay respect to his close friend George Duke, who passed away in 2013, and with whom he used to play and tour regularly? Please keep touring Stanley! Also, please consider touring with Sting! You would be a great combo! Thank you!

Stanley Clarke brought a trio into the Birchmere last night and jazzed up an enthusiastic crowd. He opened the show with a 12 to 14 minute "School Days" on electric bass. The keyboard took over the guitar parts from the original recording. Well done tight performance. Both melodic and frenetic. Clarke was engaging as he introduced his band. Two wunderkinds, the drummer only 19 years old and the fabulous piano master just 17 years old from the Republic of Georgia. A young man somehow discovered by Condoleezza Rice. I'd like to hear more of how that came about... After the introductions Clarke moved into a moving George Duke composition, "Brazilian Love Affair" followed by Joe Henderson's "Black Narcissus". Stanley Clarke did both of these tunes and most of the rest of the set on acoustic bass. The three members of the trio continued to trade solos throughout the more than hour and a half set. I believe the last tune was Return to Forever's "Romantic Warrior". All in all a solid and entertaining show. This is a great chance to see a master of jazz with two up and coming prodigy players. Give it a go.

Added as an afterthought, Alex Bugnon turned into the highlight of what originally was supposed to feature George Duke and Stanley Clark (of the former Clark-Duke project) as the centerpiece of the show. Following George Duke's untimely passing, the event morphed into a tribute to George. Having the family members on stage and reading the tributes to George from Oakland Mayor Jean Quan naming October 25 George Duke Day made for a poignant moment, as did the reading of a sympathy card to the family from President Barack Obama. But we came for the music and Norman Brown and Gerald Albright were good but predictable. I felt like it was a good Las Vegas cocktail lounge act. There was little passion and improv. with every note perfectly placed for your listening pleasure - right off the album. Seeing Al Jarreau was interesting but he is a shadow of his former greatness and it was a bit sad to see him in his present condition. The highlight of that set (Al Jarreau and Stanley Clark) was when they did a touching version of Autumn Leaves so softly at times you could hear a pin drop. All in all I was glad I was there, but not the strongest show I have been to lately.

Loved the performances of Bugnon, Brown & Albright, but the presentations and honors to George Duke took time away from the Clarke/Jarreau performance, and they were the headliners. They also seemed very disconnected in their performance. That, and not having Joe Sample and Randy Crawford there really made this a bit of a disappointment to me. If I'd known it was going to end that way I would have taken them up on the refund.

Joe Sample and Randy Crawford were cancelled. We should have left but stayed because the piano replacement was decent. No attempts to get a good female singer to replace Crawford tho. Norman Brown so so. Stanly Clarke great. Al Jarreau way past his prime, still can scat his butt off and its a good thing because he didn't seem to know any words to any songs and kept looking at his watch before and after every set to make sure he didn't go over his twenty minutes on stage. If the tickets had been half the price we paid it would have been worth the show.

The good thing was that Alex Bugnon was an ample substitute for the ill Joe Sample. he was truly the best part of the evening. As for the rest of the show there was way too much time between acts. Crew should have had that under control so we didn't have to hear the host stalling so much. i truly felt bad for him. Lastly, the time that each act did perform was too short. B1E, I know you can do better.

I very much enjoyed Stanley Clarke! I saw him at The Queen in Wilmington, DE. I like the size of the venue in that you can see the stage no matter where you were seated. I took binoculars because the seating chart when I bought the tickets seemed like I would be far away from the stage...I didn't need to use the binoculars and could see Stanley Clarke very clearly. If you are a fan, you will go to see SC so by all means go. If you are looking for an exceptional jazz fusion experience go with low expectations and you will be fine. The band is made up of SC and three very young guys with little experience. I caught them towards the end of the tour so they very tight and if I had heard his back up band in a bar I would be impressed but backing up a jazz icon they were not much more than adequate. I must admit that my exposure to SC was via RTF and gigs with other icons. I also traveled a good way to see him and got the best seat in the house so my expectations were high. Three solid stars is about right.

Stanley Clarke and his young band (Pianist 20 years old, Drummer 22 years old, and Keys/Synth player of 30 years old), rocked the house like I have never experienced before. Stanley is a true leader, allowing for all his band mates to shine with many encouraging solos. They were one, and timely in every aspect. The music was straight up improv jazz that swung from smooth, soft, solos, to hard driving rock. The drummer "Black Dynamite" was impressive. He was one of the hardest, fastest drummers I've ever seen, and could come down off a raging solo with eloquence into ethereal drifts with Stanley and the Piano boys. It really was one of the BEST SHOWS I've ever experienced, which is huge since I've seen so many of all genres. THANK YOU! It was awesome for sure.

Pro: Stanley Clark put on an amazing show! He introduced us to a 19 year old pianist from the country of Georgia who was phenomenal. He also had a 20 year old drummer whose energy and skill was unmatched by today's talent pool. Great show and all seats were well placed. Con: Food was mostly overpriced. Every item (sandwhiches $17;dinners $20; beer $8) was priced as much or more than at the local sports parks. The chefs prepared the meals well and the flavors were awesome - just the pricing was questionable.

First, my prayers and thoughts are with Joe Sample for a speedy recovery. Mr. Alex Bugnon was the perfect fill-in for Joe and really got the party started! Love me some Norm Brown/Gerald Albright smooth jazz/fonk and they didn't disappoint. Stanley Clarke and Al Jarreau delighted us with their rendition of "Autumn Leaves", and their "Party Party" made us all get the fonk up out our seats and party til it was time to go home. Thank these wonderful musicians for putting this fantastic show together, against all odds it seems, to honor George, and for keeping grown folks' music alive and well. I have so many fond memories of George and Al at Charley's Half Note on Divis in San Fran back in the day. Thank you!

Maybe I had set my expectations too high... The last-minute guest, Alex Bugnon, was excellent. The rest of the event just a mix of waiting for actual music to be performed and covering my ears due to the lousy sound check :( Stanley Clark is great.... But man can he play loud (not sure what was his point there)

It was a terrible experience. Stanley Clarke didn't even perform his own songs. It was more like a funeral for George Duke! Hated it!

Here are the reasons why I think the show was bad: 1. Randy Crawford didn't show up. I'm sure she could have flown here without Joe Sample who was sick. Alex Bugnon could have done the same job as Joe or even different. To be fair to the organizers, they announced at the start of the show that they would honor those who would like to get refunds and the audience were given about an hour to think and decide. 2. I wasn't expecting the organizers would waste about 45 minutes allowing local politicians and their representatives to be presenting and reading their posthumous awards for George Duke. Even the mayor and vice-mayor of Oakland gave their respective awards. 3. I was disappointed that Al Jarreau sang 3 songs and he was the main highlight of the show. 4. Gerald Albright, Norman Brown and Stanley Clarke were simply spectacular an did an awesome job on the show.

The show was spectacular except for Al Jarreau. I am a big fan of his, but Fridy evening (Oct 25) he could not sing. He was a headliner and his performance was terrible.

As headliners, Stanley Clark should have been on stage for 70 Minutes atleast. He might have been on for 30 minutes.

Great show at the Paramount. Wish more shows like this would come to the Bay Area. The only disappointment was not being able to see Randy Crawford who rarely performs in the States. But overall, 5 stars. Hope this can be an annual event.

Outstanding concert! I have been a fan of Stanley's music since the mid 70's! Prior to this concert I had never had the opportunity to see him live. Not only was the show excellent, we (my son and I) also got a chance to get his autograph! If that was not enough he also allowed me to take his picture with my 20 year old son!! Without a doubt a true gentleman that cares enough about his fans to take time out after a gruling concert to sign autographs and allow photos to be taken.

I wasn't very familiar with Stanley Clarke prior to attending this event, and I'm not the typical demographic sample (GenX, alt music lover), but I was blown away by Stanley's musical talent. You can't describe it solely as jazz, or funk, or fusion; to me, it defied all of those labels and took on a life of its own. The music emanated a wisdom that Stanley has accrued from a lifetime of playing, and every vibration of every string was packed with emotion. It was an amazing show, I'm glad I went, and I'd go again in a heartbeat.

Although Stanley's playing was excellent, the sound was terrible. His electric sets were almost unlistenable because it was so loud that most of the time you couldn't hear the individual instruments or notes. The Acoustic sets were much better. You could actually hear what was being played and Stanley played a great Solo. He should get a new sound crew and fire the Led Zeppelin leftovers working for him now.

From a teenager, I've always loved Stanley Clarke. My jazzy Dad first turned me on to him; and I've been hooked ever since. Have every album --remember albums? and of course, CD's and Ipod downloads. Saw him once about a 100 years ago with Weather Report at Meadowbrook in Rochester Hills, MI. One of the greatest concerts ever with Chick Corea, as well. But Stan and his music havent' aged a bit. His performance had the crowd leaping to their feet and dancing and singing along. Loved it! He and George Duke came to play and play they did. It's extra great when they're having as much fun as the audience. Awesome!

Stanley and George are tremendously talented and bring their style to a wide varity of music during the set. From Fusion to Funk to Jazz standards they were great. The bands interaction with the crowd was funny and welcoming.

Stanley Clarke & George Duke played just as long as the local unheard of group that opened up for them. Half of the songs were funk songs written for others. Def not a "Wednesday night jazz" series concert!!!

BBKings has a terrible sitting policy, so terrible I doubt I would go back, they won't let you reserve a table, and if you get there early to be able to get a table and watch the show comfortably they won't seat you until your whole party has arrive, so you risk watching the show standing against a column. That already happened to me last year and I left after a while, I came back because Stanley Clarke and George Duke are simply magnificent artists and deserve all strains and efforts to go and see them. Their performance was extraordinary. So BBKINGS has to change their sitting policy and their Chef also, as for Stanley and George all my respect and gratitude for a great show.

I have been listening to Stanley Clarke & George Duke for over 40 years and they are two of my favorites. I watched them progress from prodigies to the prolific careers they now enjoy. I took my wife, 27 year old daughter and my 24 year old son. It was the first time my children witness either of these musicians in person and they were both blown away with the performance. Stanley and I are months apart in age and it was amazing to hear and see him perform at such a high level. The mastery of acoustic and electric instruments is what has separated these two from the rest of the pack for years. I am hopeful that they will return to BB Kings in the near future.

We got to BB Kings rather early and my first impression was that folks weren't that interested in this duo anymore and because it wasn't very crowded. But by the time 8 o'clock rolled around it was standing room only. What a performance! They are both musical legends in their own right and they demonstrated why they deserved those titles. The only issue I had was that the sound system at BB Kings? It was really messed up and Stanley's bass sounded muffled and the sound people couldnt seem to do anything about it. Too bad for us and shame on BB Kings for allowing the to happen with such great performers. It's a music venue so the sound systems should be in great working order.

The show was amazing, both performers were excellent in their own right and the new talent of their 21-year old drummer was over the top. The seating at (BB Kings) is on a first come first serve bases, our seats were not that great, but the show was well worth it. I recommend the highest rating for this show.

The concert was very good. It was great to hear George Duke and Stanley Clark live! I wanted to hear more from them. The time given to the drummer was admirable, but it took time away from Duke and Stanley. Stanley played the heck out of the stand-up bass as well as the guitar. And, I was thoroughly entertained by George playing both key boards at the same time. I heard some ot the songs I wanted to hear, but I would have loved hearing so much more! Bring them back.

Have been a Duke fan since days with Cannon Ball Adderly. First exposed to him on a Jazz Station out of Rochester , NY (WHAM). Have been following him "musically" ever since...and seen close to 10 times in concert. Clarke "was"...and "still" is the baaaaadest bassest around! Following him since his days with "Return To Forever." AND...Saw them in concert...and have to admit...that sound was "EXACTLY" like the recording. One Word: AWESOME! Duke and Clarke "both" produce some of the most purest sweetest sounds on the planet. Love 'Em!!!
