Lyle Lovett

Lyle Lovett in Concert A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers.

The acoustics at Carnegie Music Hall are very good....such a great place for an acoustic show. I love a small, personal approach to such a huge personality as Lyle. The rapport between he and Shawn was delightful to see.

Absolutly loved the show! Next time we will purchase seats up front instead of lawn. We want to be able to see all of the band in their glory. Can't wait for the next show!

Lyle Lovett was great! A witty speaker with a great repore with the audience as well as a first--class seasoned musician and singer. We loved his personality and character which added to his music. His band members also were fabulous musicians, each one deserving of the credit given to them by Lovett. He definitely shares his stage equally among his band members. We also enjoyed his black backup singers consisting of three men and one woman, "Francine", who added a lot of spunk, character, theatrics and bluesy movements to the songs. Plus, Meadowbrook is one of our favorite venues for concerts. And our 11th row seats made the evening even more special! LOVED_ETT!

This was the first time I'd sen Lyle Lovett in any capacity and it was excellent. Playing with his Large (not Big) Band, Lovett kept things lively and engaged the audience, even playing Pony on a Boat as a request for a 9 year old fan.

Really good stuff--even if you've seen the Large Band show before, he keeps adding new things to it. And how many other musicians play a three-hour show? Highly recommended!

I took a friend to see Lyle Lovett. I did not know much about him, but it is one of her favorites. I loved his off-beat eclectic style - a little blues, a little funk, a little R&B and country. I am NOT a country fan, but Lyle does it in a way that is enjoyable.

Lyle and the gang never disappoint! Lyle, 9 great musicians, 3 male back-up singers and the fabulous Francine Reed. A little country, a little folk, a little blues, a little Texas swing, a little jazz and some bluegrass and gospel thrown in to shake things up even more.

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band gave a seamless performance moving from the older songs such as If I Had A Boat to the later ones encompassing, as usual, multiple music styles from blues to blugrass with a tinge of classical in each one. With music and lyrics so emotionally charged lead by his off-beat syncopated voice that I found myself feeling exactly the feeling of the song. What a great concert!

This was my fifth Lyle Lovett concert and he just keeps getting better. The entire band was very professional. Great songs. And what a beautiful evening. Many, Closing Time was such an excellent choice for the last song and then they came back and did that folk song for an encore. It doesn't get any better.

The concert itself was excellent. Lyle played lengthy sets and was very engaging with his audience. The down side of the evening was the excessive talking by lawn guests. I would not reccommend lawn seats to concert goers who really came to listen to the music. Perhaps it is the picnic type atmosphere on the lawn that lends itself to people talking/visiting throughout the concert. This was very distracting. Is worth the cost to spend a little more to be placed in the seated section.

Lyle Lovett's music encompasses every genre of American music and it is reflected in the songs he writes, the make-up of the Large Band (Russ Kunkel on drums is an added bonus!), and the diversity of the audience. Electric guitar leads could use enough volume to hear, but technically that was the only problem. If Dylan is 1A in terms of lyrics and composition, Lovett is vastly overlooked at 1Aa. Most impressive, however, was the humility and quirky wit of Mr. Lovett -- he actually talked in between songs about the songs, his personal life, the band members, and a few random thoughts! The only term I can think of to describe the overall performance is "musical integrity" ... excellence in every aspect.

It's a shame that any performer has to endure shouts from the peanut gallery for their own personal song "requests", but Lyle Lovett handles this with amazing grace. A Walt Whitman-type story-teller, he embues quiet humor with his anecdotes between songs. This year's tour has minor changes to the band's lineup, and a few new songs, but they are musicians who blend the notes as seemlessly as they do the transitions between the songs. If you ever thought you would be attending a "country" concert when seeing Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, you would be sadly mistaken. The experience is worth witnessing. Go!

Lyle, his Large Band, and his singers all looked cool and classy in their tailored suits. Lyle connected with the audience by talking to the audience between songs. Lyle is very talented and he has a very talented band as well. Lyle sounds even better live than he does on his recordings. He plays a great variety of styles...jazz, country, easy rock, and blue grass - which all sounded fantastic!

As always, Lyle and his Large Band were amazing, regaling the audience with a mix of bluegrass, gospel and standards(though, not unfortunately San Antonio Girl or Private Conversation, would love to hear those sometime. Not just the music, Lyle is a consumate charmer, he interacts with the audience, tells funny stories, seems like such a nice person, you'd love to know him better.

Lyle Lovett was fabulous. He and his large band were musically enchanting and yet still high energy. I have been a Lovett fan for years, and this was my first opportunity to see him perform. It was worth the wait. The band consisted of fiddler, cello, mandolin/acoutic guitar, electric guitar, electric bas, string bass, piano and drums, along with 4 back up singers (including Francine). I truly enjoyed how tight the musicians played together. With a band that large, sometimes the tight rythms and harminies can get a little less clean, but these fellas (only one woman onstage -- Francine) were together and hot! There were a few numbers that were markedly bluegrass, peppered with fiddle and mandolin solos, which were my favorites. OVerall, I would highly recommend the show as entertaining and musically divine.

Third row center. I love the Midland! And to see Lyle so close up in such (as always) an intimate atmosphere as he makes it, really says something about that man with such a large band! They all look like they have a great time and there is such talent there! Willy - that deep voice...oh my gosh, and Sweet Pea, and Jason, and that fiddler player, incredible.. not to leave anyone out, oh Mitch too...but there are what 14 of you on stage? Again, all spectacular and with such talent! The sound is crisp, clean and strong. Lyle, your voice is unique and touches our souls sometimes bringing a tear to the eye. I missed hearing and seeing Francine, I hope all is well with her, but as always Lyle and your Large Band...outstanding! Thanks for the songs the stories and the show!

My wife and I attended an excellent concert at Red Rocks. Taj Mahal started the evening with a great set of blues. Lyle and his Large Band followed it up with 2 1/2 hours of great music (his genre is hard to pin down...he seems to have something for everyone!) The only thing that dampened the evening (literally) was the rain...thank goodness for rain ponchos! The rain was the only thing that kept me from giving this show five stars.

Lyle always delivers. It was a little more mellow than his usual shows, but that's what happens when Francine Reed, his female back up singer, decides not to tour with The Large Band. The band was great with Big Band Numbers such as 'Cute as a Bug' , 'Church', and 'It's 'Isn't That So.' The Blue Grass set was also exceptional with the song 'Pantry.' Taj Mahal really made 'My Baby Don't Tolerate' go to the next level when he was asked to join the band. Lyle had such a huge smile during the song that made the crowd know they were watching something special.

There are bands, and there are entertainers. Then there are both... I've watched a number of shows this year including Tori Amos, AC/DC, Metallica, Creed/Staind, and Lyle Lovett. Lyle is an awesome performer, AND he is a genius of an entertainer. I normally don't laugh so much unless I'm with good friends and we're all just having a great time. Lyle makes the audience feel just like we are good friends having a great time together. One of the more entertaining aspects of Lyle is how he watches his band members when the perform solos and how he smiles just like the audience member to my left or to my right. He thoroughly enjoys what he is doing, he is completely thankful for what he is doing, and those are attributes that cannot be replicated.

We are from Minnesota and have always hoped to see a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheater in CO. When we heard that Lyle Lovett was playing there this year, we decided this was the time. The amphitheater is absolutely breathtaking--in more ways than one! If you are from the lower elevations, like us, the stairs gave us quite a work out. Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, accompanied by Francine Reed and the backup singers performed for over 2 1/2 hours. The performance, coupled with the venue, made for an unforgettable night. My husband says he's not sure any future concerts will compare. If you have a chance to take in a concert there...DO IT! You won't be disappointed.

First of all, the Red Rocks Amphitheater is the most amazing place I have ever been to for a concert. It is out of this world! Do not miss it if you are ever in Denver. Lyle Lovett was fantastic! The best show I have ever seen. He and the band were HOT! Put on a fantastic show, and kept me rocking in my boots. Mixed the old in with the new and it all was great. I've seen Lyle so many times now, I can't keep count, but it's somewhere around 13 concerts. He always puts on a great show and it's never the same show twice. Even though he didn't have his horn section and his "gospel choir" joining him last night, it was great to hear some of his old country stuff and his "large band" was awesome as usual. Loved hearing his new songs and really glad he has a new album coming out in the fall - it's on my list of important things to get. Thanks to Lyle and his Large Band for making the trip to Red Rocks again - we always enjoy seeing you!

Lyle Lovett and his Large Band put on another great show. I missed last year, but had been the previous 4 years and will be back next year too. I am always leery about the euphemism "acoustic" for artists that normally travel with a band. These shows are often dull and full of cliched life stories. Show moved too slowly. Started late which was expected due to long Will Call line. But then the guitars were tuned. Why not earlier? Tuning during a show is expected but this just added to what seemed like 50% music, 50% tuning and chatter.

Superb performances by both Lyle Lovette and Shan Colvin. Great to be able to watch and listen to two masters in such an intimate setting. Great storytelling, fine playing, good song selection and beautfiful vocals. Only knock was Carnegie Music Hall was too hot. I am a Lyle Lovett fan now. Have enjoyed his music on radio and streaming sites, but in person is another experience. He's very gracious to his band members that highlight many of their successes, as well. What a humble, and genuine, skilled, crafted, musician and entertainer. Enjoyed ALL his music -- at one point in the concert, literally closed my eyes and became so engulfed in the rhythm, riff, melody - it was literally an incredibly, warm, and mesmerizing experience. No other concert has delivered such an experience in my more than 40 years of concerts. Do yourself a favor - see one of his concerts while he's on tour in 2015. You won't be disappointed. Congrats Mr. Lovett to you and your awesome band and incredible venue. It was an evening I will cherish

This was Lyle's 23rd year at Humphreys, yet he still manages to keep if fresh. This year he played more of his country flavored songs. The music was perfection as always, and once again Lyle gave plenty of face and playing time to his Large Band. My Husband said he was waiting for the songs to end just so he could hear what Lyle would say next. He was as funny and entertaining as ever. Of all the many shows at Humphreys every year, this one is the only one we repeat annually.

I first saw Lyle Lovett live nearly 20 years ago. Some friends had an extra ticket, so I decided to tag along, not really expecting much. Not a country fan, I barely knew a single song he played. I walked away from that show realizing that Lyle Lovett is SO much more than a country performer -- and am now a fan for life, own all his CDs, and haven't missed a live performance in my area since! Lyle brings a unique charm and personality to the stage like no other. His dry wit and humor while delivered softly, pack a powerful punch that really shines through during both his song performances, and his dialog in between. And his voice is flawless - sounding just as good live as on his recordings each and every time! Prior to this show, I last saw him last 3 years ago with his "Acoustic Group". While there is *never* a bad Lyle Lovett show, there's *nothing* like seeing him with his Large Band to really get a feel for all this man can do! Never pinned to one style, with his Large Band, Lyle crosses over into so many genres, it's hard to keep track: Country, Blues, Gospel, Big Band, Lounge Act -- and combinations there of -- each accentuated with his unique flair and storytelling style. Ironically, his Acoustic Group was dwarfed on the massive stage of the Grand Sierra Resort three years ago, and this time his Large band was packed like sardines on the small stage of the Silver Legacy -- but squished or not, Lyle and his Large Band still delivered with style! We were treated to nearly 2 1/2 hours of Lyle and his Large Band - sans opening act. There were a handful of solo performances throughout the night by band members doing their own original material, and while all were enjoyable, the real show was watching Lovett look on like a proud papa. The show began with the Large Band's solo performance of "The Blues Walk", followed by Lyle's long-time female accompaniment, Francine Reed, who made a show-stopping entrance via spotlight from the back of the room belting out "Wild Women" in true Chicago Blues style. Francine worked her way through the crowd on her way to the stage, where she was joined by Lyle for my favorite all-time duet "What Do You Do/The Glory of Love" Lyle introduced all the band members, and then himself as "... I'm the guy who reads the paper over your shoulder..." seque waying into crowd-favorite "Here I Am". The show was toe-tapping, entertaining, and all-around fun. Whether or not you're already a Lyle Lovett fan, if the opportunity ever presents itself to see him live, GET THOSE TICKETS! You won't be disappointed ... Note about Venue: Seats were good, but not as good as we hoped. The floor plan made it seem that we'd still be in front of the right end of the stage -- we were actually about 10-15 feet beyond the stage, and Lyle looked mostly forward and to the opposite direction of where we sat. Sound quality was good, but lighting made it hard to make out his face from the direction we were looking - relied more on the large screen in front of us to see his facial expressions than we thought we'd have to from 3rd row seats. (Note: there were 4 large screens in the room). Also deceptive from the floor plan, it looked like seats would be staggered in the rows in front of us with no seats in front of us -- this was not the case. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT VENUE: This really a large banquet room - most seats are flat, except for the risers in the back. Venue is relatively small - not more than a few thousand seats.

I've been stalking Lyle with his large band for a while now. This is the closest they've come to me and I snatched up the tickets the day I got the email from ticketmaster! Excellent seats - 5th row and center stage!! I've seen Lyle several times and always am happily entertained. I love his delivery and could listen to his music nonstop! Now seeing his large band, which was on my bucket list, was such a special night. I could not believe a building could hold that much talent!! Thanks for bringing them to the Tennessee Theatre. I had a fabulous evening.

LL played with his Large Band, a 12 piece group of virtuoso's that were all featured on their own at times. The musicianship of the individuals, and the group was outstanding. Everyone on stage truly appeared to be having fun - Lyle is a natural kibitzer - , and I really like that. It was a 2.5 hour show, and I loved every minute. The female singer, Ms. Reid (embarrassingly, I've forgotten her first name) was excellent whether she was accompanying Lyle, skatting, or being featured. She, along with most of the other band members have solo albums, and it wasn't surprising to find that out. The Muscle Shoals horn section was a real knock-out, and included a Professor of Saxophone.

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band Kicked Ass this past Saturday at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor Michigan!!! Jeff Daniels coming out as a surprise guest was Spectacular!!! Along with Francine Reed singing, one couldn't ask for a Better Night!!! I have seen Lyle with John Hiatt and with his small band.. All Spectacular, but with His Large Band, I can't put into words the Great time my kids and I had!!! My husband who passed away 6years ago, turned us onto Lyle and every year, we try to find a venue where he is playing to honor my husbands memory! Couldn't ask for a better tribute or a Better Concert Ever!!!!!!

This is the 3rd year in a row we have seen Lyle Lovett. Why? Because every show he delivers and is different! We saw him with the Acoustic band and the last 2 times with the Large band. This time he had Francine Reid with him on backups. He had a small opening act (Alaska Reid) and played 2 hours. Although he played a few of his mainstream standards, this show was more about the slower, deep cuts. He conversed more this time I think, and was smiling a lot more. He looked very dapper in his light gray suit, and the songs were, (as usual) well done and sounded perfect.

Simply said, Lyle plays damn good music!! We get to the venue early, so we can be up front in line. We park our stuff and then go to the wine tour and walk the grounds. Beautiful spot.

Lyle Lovett and his large band was amazing. This is jazz masquerading as modern country. But, the highlight of the night for me was Kris Kristofferson. The folk legend is still ripped at 77 years old. Listening to his gravelly voice sing those timeless lyrics in this unique setting in the mountains of Colorado under a full moon was an almost spiritual experience.

I had a great time at the show. Red Rocks was amazing as usual, but the show was incredible. I am a huge fan of Kris Kristofferson and he didn't let me down at all! I had never really listened to Lyle Lovett, but I am now a huge fan of his. I actually was fortune enough to meet him before the show and he was very humble and kind! Overall a great performance and an amazing experience!

The two and a half hour show with no break was wonderful. A nice mix of new songs from Release Me, old favorites and a few surprises. Lyle's wit and wide range of styles are very entertaining.

I saw Lyle for the first time back in the early 90's and it was the best concert I have ever been to. Seeing him again in Portland this year was another great concert experience. His talent along with the incredible musicianship of the band members made it a feast. He is also one of the few artist that gives you a non-stop show and so many songs to enjoy. He is also a funny guy and tells some neat stories related to the songs and/or band members. One other element that always comes through is Lyle's humbleness rather than the arrogance that accompanies so many performers these days. The concert was billed as, "An Evening with Lyle Lovett" and that's what it felt like. It was like watching a team of talented artists doing what they do best and letting us watch. I took my 19 year old daughter along, who has become quite a Lyle fan herself and she was singing along & thoroughly enjoyed herself. Thank you Lyle and all those that make your concerts happen!

It is always a pleasure to see Lyle and his large Band especially when he is accompanied by Francine Reed. Lyle s ensemble was energetic and precise and performed a wide variety of music. The highlight of the night was when the band sang Goodnight Irene as the first song of their encore. This of course was in reference to Hurricane Irene that was, at the time of this concert, creeping up the east coast and subsequently caused the cancellation of Lyle s next show in NJ. The venue was very nice (good weather, nice seats) however, the outdoor arena did allow for some extraneous, loud noises to be heard above the performance. This was a minor distraction at times.

Concert was slow, They were late. They talked to much about nothing in paticular between songs. We left after half of the show. Good thing they served alcohol.

Loved it. My only complaint was they didn't play every song they had! Lyle and John have a great rapport. I had no doubts that this would be a fun show and it was. Really perfect. Kirby center is a great venue. this was our first time there. Free public indoor parking near by. Easy to get to. Ate at Rodano's before hand which I highly recommend. Good time.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. The instrumentals were awesome and the backup singers were totally cool. Loved the entire evening. We're already planning to see him when he comes back to Michigan next summer and we'll travel to Grand Rapids to see him....that's how much we enjoyed ourselves.

Long time fan of Shawn Colvin, sorry to say not familiar with Lyle Lovett. IMHO, far superior show as compared to previous tours with other artists over the past 3 years. Lyle and Shawn alternated songs, and we really enjoyed Lyle as well as Shawn (we expected that), in addition, their harmonizing was terrific! Love seeing them at a small venue like BPAC, where even distant seats are not so far away.

Really liked the performance of Lyle Lovett & Shawn Colvin as I've followed both for longer than I care to admit. Although they were in fine voice & both talented guitar players, the song list left me wanting. With all the songs that would be perfect for this setting, they were not to be heard. I'm not sure if the set varied according to location, but this night could have been amazing & I think the audience sensed this as well. Maybe next tour...

The theater was excellent not a bad seat in the house, however the sound mixer was off that night. Guitars were very overpowering and singers were hard to hear clearly. The level of sound was excellent, meaning I could hear well from where I sat. Yes, if another event comes along I would go back with out a doubt. Seeing Lyle in person was quite a trip, really enjoyed it and the theater was small enough to make the experience very up close and friendly. Thank You very much Paramont

This was, by far, one of the most magical acoustic shows I've ever seen. We stayed at Harvey's, and the room was beautiful! Enjoyed a fabulous dinner at the Sage Room (I'd highly recommend the chili spice rubbed Rib Eye) and set out to see one of the best shows we've ever enjoyed. We've seen both of these artists individually on several occasions, but their acoustic pairing was genius! If you can catch one of these dates, do yourself a favor and grab a ticket early... they sell out fast! Thanks for such a great show!

I saw Lyle Lovett with John Hiatt in San Antonio. Not a fan of Hiatt, but I enjoyed the show. When I heard that the show in Houston was Lyle Lovett and his Large Band, I was sold and bought tickets as soon as possible. The show was INCREDIBLE! Though I had the misfortune of sitting next to someone who triggered my allergies, I loved every minute of it! The amount of sheer talent on the stage was staggering. I didn't realize how incredible a live concert could be until this show. The one in San Antonio was more intimate and great, but this had the sheer power that I had only experienced when watching opera.
